This fall BabsonARTS offers a range of programs and events that demonstrate vividly how the arts can shed light on some of the major issues that concern us all: environmental problems, social activism, crime and poverty, love and loss. You’ll have the opportunity to not only attend performances and exhibitions, but also to interact with the creative and innovative artists who are coming to campus.

WITHOUT YOU A MEMOIR OF LOVE, LOSS, AND THE MUSICAL RENTBroadway and film actor Anthony Rapp stars in this one-man musical theater event, based on his 2006 book Without You: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and the Musical Rent. Rapp’s first big break in show business came when he was cast as the lead in the musical Rent, but the exhilaration of that show’s overwhelming success was tempered by the sudden and unexpected death of the play’s writer, Jonathan Larson. Without You is his memoir of life and loss, with music from Rent as well as original songs.

ANTHONY RAPPThough best known as a performer, Anthony Rapp is also an accomplished business person, managing a career that includes playwriting, book publishing, music industry, and many other threads. He will talk about his experiences managing the business side of his acting and music career.

MICHAEL MACDONALD IN RESIDENCEMichael MacDonald is an award-winning writer, author of the national bestseller All Souls and the follow-up work Easter Rising: A Memoir of Roots and Rebellion. MacDonald grew up in a housing project in South Boston, where he lost four siblings and saw his generation decimated by poverty, crime, and addiction. He became a leading Boston activist, helping launch many antiviolence initiatives, and he continues to work for social change nationally, collaborating with survivor families and young people. His residency at Babson includes a conversation with the author, which is open to the public, and visits to classrooms to interact with students.

DEAR ERIN HARTPHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSAMYN LOVELL

In 2011, photographer Jessamyn Lovell’s identity was stolen by a woman named Erin Coleen Hart. Dear Erin Hart is the body of work made by Lovell in response to the identity theft and the crimes committed in her name. Lovell documented relevant places, interviewed witnesses, hired a private investigator, and photographed Hart as she was released from jail. The project, and the exhibition of photographs and video, help us gain understanding and empathy for her identity thief.

MADELEINE STECZYNSKI CO-FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ZUMIX

Madeleine Steczynski is an arts entrepreneur who founded and directs ZUMIX, an East Boston-based nonprofit organization dedicated to building community through music and the arts. The organization’s award-winning music and creative technology programming is designed to equip young people with the tools necessary to reach their full potential, while creating a safe space for them to explore who they are and who they want to be. Through community events, ZUMIX also provides access to top-quality arts experiences for residents in underserved neighborhood. Presented in collaboration with the Center for Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership and the Lewis Institute.

ETHEL: DOCUMERICA Documerica is a landmark visual and musical event that explores Americans’ connection to their environment, performed by the progressive contemporary quartet ETHEL. Visual images include more than 3,000 vintage photographs from the National Archive, images of strip mining, political protest, car culture, pollution, unemployment, natural beauty, and urban decline. ETHEL’s own original music and a commissioned score incorporate a range of American styles, genres and techniques — blues, jazz, Native American traditional, bluegrass, and old-time string band — filtered through a distinctly 21st-century lens.

Set in 1981, the musical Falsettoland focuses on Marvin, who has left his wife and son for his ex-lover, Whizzer. But when Whizzer becomes afflicted with a mysterious illness — which we know today as AIDS, but was not yet named in 1981 — all the characters are forced to reevaluate their relationships with each other, as they come to understand what “family” really means. In its original New York run in the 1990s, Falsettoland was an off-Broadway hit and the recipient of numerous awards.

BEING HERE, GOING BEYOND PAINTINGS BY PERCY FORTINI-WRIGHT

From an early age, Percy Fortini-Wright was integrating the influences of Fine Art from his watercolorist grandmother and Street Art from DJ Kon, a family friend and renowned record collector. His paint handling is both improvisational and disciplined, whether he is using a brush or a spray can. As a multiracial artist, he is interested in combining diverse materials and imagery to create urban streetscapes and bold portraits of imaginary people that share a beautiful sense of movement and anticipation.

William Rawn is the founding Principal of William Rawn Associates, Architects, of Boston, which has developed a national reputation for the design of a range of public buildings, cultural facilities, and college and university projects — including Glavin Chapel, the Reynolds Campus Center, and the Sorenson Center for the Arts at Babson. The firm, founded in 1983, has a special commitment to buildings in the cultural and public realm, and is a leader in sustainable design. Bill is a graduate of Yale College, Harvard Law School, and the MIT School of Architecture.
