Ifyoudeterminedyourtargetbasedonbetterskillsandlowerrisk,youhadmuchbetteroddsofrosteringapitcherwhohelpedyourteamin2016.UsingtheTargetfunctionTheExcelspreadsheetthatisdownloadablefromBABSbaseball.comcontainsafunctionthatallowsyoutoeasilyidentifycandidatesforyourupcomingpicks.The"Target"cellallowsyoutoenteranADPnumberfurtherdownthedraftboardandthespreadsheetidentifiesthoseplayerswhoshouldbeconsidered.Youneverwanttomissoutongoodtalentsbecauseyouaren'twillingtolookafewroundsahead.Remember–whenitcomestoassessingfuturevalue,theADPsarewrong.

Intheearlystagesofthedraft,enterthenumberofyourupcomingpicktoseewhichplayerswillmostlikelybegonebythetimeyourpickcomestoyou.Youcanalsoenterthenumberofyourpickaroundaheadtoseewhichplayersyouneedtograbinordertoavoidlosingoutonthem.Forinstance,ifyouhavethefirstpickina15-teamdraft,afteryouchooseMikeTrout,enter30inthetargetfield(that’syournextpick),andalltheplayerslikelytobegonebyyournextpickwillbeflagged.Ifanyarestillavailableonceyourpickarrives,theywouldbelogicaltargets.Youcanenter60toseewhichplayersyouneedtoconsiderdraftingat30and31inordertoavoidmissingoutonthem.

Whatevertargetnumberyouselect,theresulting“X”sthatappearconstitutetheplayerrankingyoushouldbedraftingfrom.Un-“X”edplayerswillcontinuetobubbleup

tothetop;theyarethebetter-skilledplayerswhoyoucanwaitonuntiltheybegintoapproachtheirmarketvalue.Asyouupdateyourtargetrange,thoseplayerswilleventuallyget“X”edandthatiswhenyoucanstartconsideringthem.Asyougetfurtherintoyourdraft,youwillneedtoexpandyourtargetrange.Youmightconsiderenteringapicknumberthat’s2-3roundsaheadinordertocovertherealrangeinwhichplayersmightbeselected.Byround14orso,theADPsarealmostmeaninglessandhavesuchawiderangeoferrorthatyouwillneedtoenteravalueperhaps5-6roundsahead.

BABSinAuctionsI’vebeenplayinginauctionleaguessince1985.Ispentprettymuchallofthattimeworriedaboutoptimalbudgeting,gettingthebestvaluesandnotoverpayingforplayers.I’veagonizedoverwhethertogoanextrabuck,howlongtostayinbiddingwarsandmakingsureIspentallmy$260. You'reatrueauctionpro.Yeah,butBABSsaysI'mspendingtoomuchenergyonmeaninglessthings.AndIworrytoomuch.WhenitcomestousingBABSinanauctionleague,everythingstartswiththisparagraphfromChapter1:“Thereisonlya65%chancethataplayerprojectedforacertaindollarvaluewillfinishtheseasonwithinplus-or-minus$5ofthatprojection.Thatmeans,ifyouprojectaplayerwillearn$25andyouagonizewhenbiddinghits$27,thereisonlyabouta2-in-3shotofhimfinishingsomewherebetween$20and$30.”Sowereallyshouldnotbeobsessingoverindividualdollarsandjustridingthemarketplacetopaywhatwehavetofortheplayersthatbestfitourrosterconstructionplan.ThebeautyofBABSisthatshecanidentifyunderpricedcommoditiessothatyoucanbuildtonsofpotentialprofitintoyourroster.Unlikesnakedraftswhereyouareatthemercyoftheotherowners,theadvantageofauctionsisthatyoucannominateandbidonwhoeveryouwant.Youdon'tnecessarilyhavetositbackonhigherskilledplayerswhobubbleupduringthecourseofthedraft.ThatmakesBABSevenmorepowerful.Let'sgobacktothedraftsheetfromChapter9andlookatthisexcerpt:

Similartoitsuseinthesnakedraft,theExcelspreadsheetthatisdownloadablefromBABSbaseball.comcontainsaneatlittlefunctionthatallowsyoutoeasilyidentifycandidatesforyourupcomingpicks.The"Target"cellallowsyoutoenteradollarvaluetarget,andthespreadsheetidentifiesthoseplayerswhoshouldbeconsidered.Youneverwanttomissoutongoodtalentsbecausetheirexpectedvalueduringacertainstageoftheauctionisnotonyourradar.Remember–whenitcomestoaccuratelyassessingfuturevalue,theAAVsarewrong.Usethetargetfieldtokeeptrackofavailableplayersateachdollarvaluerange.Forinstance,ifyouenter$20,thespreadsheetwillflagtheremainingplayerswhowilllikelybepurchasedfor$20ormore.TheBABSrankingstellyouwhicharethebestbuysatthatpricepoint.Intheendgame,

enter$1,andthespreadsheetwillflagalltheremainingplayerswhowilllikelyhavepositive market value (though not necessarily positive real value). Intheend,it’syourchoicehowyoudecidetodesignyourteam.Youarethearchitect.

Okay,forinstance…HowdoIknowwhentostopbiddingonaplayer?AtwhatpointinthebiddingdoIconcludethatthepriceistoohigh,dropoutandgoforanotherguy?ShouldIpay$30?$35?$40?Withoutaprojection,howdoIknowwhatthepriceshouldbeandwhetherI’mactuallymakingasoundbid?

Theshortanswer–andtheoneIsuspectyoudon’twanttohear–isthatwedon’teverknowwhenabidissound.Youhavethelistedmarketpriceasaguidebutthat’sjustanindustryaverage;itmaynotreflectthebiddingtendenciesinyourownleague.Rememberthatourbidshaveonlya65percentchanceofbeingwithin+/-$5ofaplayer'struevalueanyway.Sothere'snoruleofthumbastowhentokeepbiddingordropoutbecauseit’stheotherowners'bidsthatultimatelydeterminehowhighyou’llneedtogotopurchaseaplayer.Theonlyblatantsignthatyouneedtodropiswhenyoudetectthatyou'veenteredintoabiddingwarwithanotherownerwhohappenstocovetthatplayer.Iftheleagueaveragepriceforaplayeris$20andthatownerispushingthebiddingto$30,thenit'sprettyobvious.ButthenicethingaboutBABSisthatsheshowsyouwhoyouroptionsareifaplayergetsbidhigherthanwhatyouarecomfortablepaying.Let'ssayyouthinkWalkerBuehler(ER,KK)wouldbeagoodfitbutsomeDodgersfaninyourgroupbidshimupto$30.Lookatalltheotheroptionsyouhavethatprovideacomparableskillset!

Anyothertacticaladvice?ThereareafewtacticalconsiderationsIuse.TheyarenotnecessarilyBABS-specific,justsoundapproachesingeneral.Ahelpfulin-drafttacticistofindbenchmarkpriceswithinyourgroupofowners.WheneverthefirstplayerinanAssetGroupgetsbought,makenoteofhispurchaseprice.Playersaroundhimshouldgoatapproximatelythesamelevel.Giventheabove,tossingthefirstplayerwithinanAssetgroupisalwaysgoingtobeasoundnominatingstrategy.Tossthefirst(PW,AV)hitterorthefirst(ER,KK)pitcher,preferablytheonewiththehighestexpectedprice.Thatshouldgiveyousomegoodinsightintoapproximatebiddingbenchmarks.Forexample,ifyounominatedJustinVerlanderearlyandhewentfor$32,thatwouldtellyouthatsomeoftheotherplayersinthatAssetGroupmightalsobeoverpriced.Inthatcase,youcouldopttogoafteracomparableplayeratthelowerendofthegroup(likePatrickCorbin).Evenifyouhavetopayafewdollarsoverhismarketvalue,you'dstillbesavingmoneyratherthanpotentiallyoverpayingforaCoreyKluberorGerritCole,allplayerswithcomparableskills.IalsothinkthatpurchasingthesecondplayernominatedfromanAssetgroup–particularlyadeepgroup–couldprovidesomeprofit.Onceownersseethebenchmarkprice,theymightbelessinclinedtodriveupthepriceofthesecondplayerinthegroupknowingthattherearestillothersavailabletobidonlater.Thisworksevenbetteringroupswithscarceskills,likespeedandsaves.

Finally,alwaysadjustyourexpectationsforplayerswithLiabilities.It'seasytoforgettodothatbutthepotentialdamagecouldbedevastating.

Whatabouttheend-game?Therewon'tbeanybiddingwarsandyou'reprettymuchonyourownwhenitcomesto$1players.

Butoncewestartdippingintothosebatterslikelytoseejustafewhundredplateappearances,orrarely-usedpitchers,herimpactstartsgettingabitdiluted.Theerrorbarsaroundthoseplayers’projectionsareprettywideanyway,andBABSonlyservestomaketherangeofpossibleoutcomesevenwider.
