BRITISH CONNECTIONS

At a reception she hosted to mark the opening of the 2012 Olympics, British Consul-General Dame Barbara Hay and Director

of Design for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, Arnold Schwartzman, display torches from the London and Los Angeles

Olympic Games. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)

The City of London was an impressive stage for the 2012 Olympics, as ex-pats we couldn’t help but be thrilled not only with the excitement the of Olympics, but also the glimpses we saw of London's iconic landmarks and the beautiful English countryside.

The US and the UK enjoy a particularly close connection and a fine appreciation of each other's cultures. While we ex-pats are especially proud to be 'British' at this time, it would seem our American counterparts are also equally proud to call themselves 'Anglophiles' during this spectacular year of celebration, competition and collaboration.

The Patriot asked Los Angeles based Consul General, Dame Barbara Hay for her thoughts on the connection of the UK to Orange County during this banner year for British celebrations and she wrote…

“With the eyes of the world on the UK this year, it is absolutely essential that we put our best foot forward, build new relationships, strengthen existing ones and show what makes Britain a great place to visit, study and invest. We have great connections with Orange County – you can see it in all the businesses that have operations in the UK – and the extraordinary celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics have helped us foster even more.”

The Globe Theatre, cockney rhyming slang and curry made big impressions on two impressionable Orange County students. Justice Smith and Phillip Jarrell were the BABC scholarship winners who won an all-expense paid study trip to England to study at the ACS International Schools' British Studies Summer Program. Both students are enrolled at the OC High School for the Arts and have acting ambitions. Their whirlwind, two-week tour of England included visits to the Tate National Gallery, the Tower of London, and they even climbed the narrow winding staircase of 311 steps to the top of the 'Monument' to get a truly birds-eye view of the city.

Justice captured many of his experiences on a video blog on YouTube (Justice E Smith) where you can hear first hand his exclamations of how green it was, and the scary realization that they were 'driving on the left! Justice who already has an agent and has TV appearances and commercials to his credit, said visiting the Globe Theatre and acting on stage with Shakespearean actors was a 'dream come true'.

“I've always dreamed of visiting England, and couldn't believe it when I got the call saying that I had won the scholarship. This trip has given me a huge confidence boost. It has made me realize that if I can achieve this dream, that more is possible, I can have even bigger dreams now.” Yes, Justice has now been bitten by the travel bug and

Dream Trip leads to Bigger Dreams!

19 students from across America were able to take advantage of the life-changing opportunity of the ACS International Schools 2012 British Studies Summer Program. Included in this year’s group were BABC OC scholarship winners Justice Smith and Phillip Jarrell (pictured left in front of the Millennium Bridge, London).

he hopes to find more scholarships that might help him achieve his newer, bigger dreams. It was, Justice said “a magical experience” and one that made his eight siblings (and his mom) intensely jealous.

This was Phillip Jarrell's first trip to Europe and he was delighted that he was able to visit England – top of his bucket list. A highlight for Phillip was his visit to the National Theatre, not only see the outstanding performers, but he was particularly enthralled with the backstage tour that he proclaimed 'astounding!' The architecture and even the politics and English banking system all held fascination for him, and he says was inspired to see a South Bank building that dedicated an entire floor as a poetry library. Street performers also caught his attention – particularly a young girl playing a piano alongside the bank of the Thames in a spur of the moment event that snagged an audience of 50-75 people.

Philip hopes to pursue his acting career in New York where he believes he may have the opportunity to audition for a spot at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London…yes, for Phillip – 'London's calling' – but then again, it might just be the fish and chips!

Why Who You Know, Is More Important Than Ever!

Life is about connection, sometimes the connection is tenuous, sometimes strong, but connection is always important. It is the quality of the connections and relationships that we establish with our family, friends, customers and vendors that often determines our personal or business success.

With the prevalence of social networks it might appear that it has never been easier to build or maintain a network of connections and to some extent that is true. However, if we are truly honest with ourselves, we know despite the hundreds of online contacts we may have via LinkedIn or Facebook and other social sites, we can't really be sure that these connections will return a call or email – simply because they don't truly know us.

In business, networking or connecting is the primary source of referrals. And it works, because of two major psychological truths: 1) People are afraid to do business with strangers 2) People prefer to do business with people they know or with people who were recommended by someone they know.

This is where your BABC membership pays dividends. The more you get involved, attend events, or volunteer to serve on a committee, the stronger your connection to the vast resource of business connections throughout the BABC – not just locally, but globally too.

The BABC Orange County enjoys a strong connection with UK Trade & Investment who share offices with the British Consul General in Los Angeles. The staff of UKTI often attends our events and some also serve on our Board of Directors. BABC member Mitch Wexler an Immigration Attorney

(Fragomen, Del Rey, Berson & Loewy, LLP), responded to a request from UKTI for a high level contact at a major worldwide real estate franchise who were growing their business in London. Mitch was able to introduce them to the head of west coast operations and Latin America much to UKTI's delight. A prime Orange County corporation and a BABC OC member enjoyed the benefit of a UKTI connection when they expanded their offices in the UK a few years back.

Member Josh Teeple (Senior Manager at Crowe Horwath, LLP,) says his name is often dropped to clients of BABC member Thomas Fasel Esq. (Fasel & Fasel LLP) and Josh recently received the opportunity to bid on forensic accounting

services for one of Thomas' clients. Another introduction by BABC President John Miller to one of John's business associates also resulted in Josh being given the opportunity to pitch his company's services to a large national company.

Informal 'advisory services' that we provide to one another is another relevant way to connect. Members can make contacts with others who serve as mentors and share the wealth of their knowledge of business development, client services and best practices etc. The synergy and sharing of such collaboration has forged long-term connections for many BABC members.

The BABC also has many 'small' business owners amongst the membership and they too benefit. Deb Shrider (Put It In Writing) doesn't need printing services, but a guest she brought to a BABC event did and she was able to refer her

guest and his company to BABC member Michael Wolf (The Wolf Printing Company). Deb was hired by another BABC member Sarah Agee (Sterling Search Inc.) to update and rewrite her web site content and when Deb wanted a special venue for a milestone birthday celebration she turned to BABC member 'The Olde Ship' and reported Deb, “I'm sure The Olde Ship always gives terrific service, but I can't help thinking my BABC connection pushed their already good service to an even higher level. My guests are still talking about the outstanding crew and wonderful food at The Olde Ship.”

People prefer to do business with the people they like and/or trust. Therefore, the stronger the relationships you have, the better your network and the more business you will do.

Are you taking advantage of your BABC membership? Do you attend events and mixers? Are you employing the ABC's of the BABC? Always Be Connecting…you just never know where those connections will lead, and who wouldn't want a little more business pushed their way - your next business lead may come via the BABC!

Nothing beats connecting with people face-to-face, which is why attending BABC membership events is not only fun, but a great networking opportunity too. But there's more than one way to connect socially, and the ongoing interest in social media is proof that many do connect via social media on a regular basis. Millennials (18-34 year olds) in

Connecting socially with the P word

particular, demonstrate a growing reliance on social networks.

Earlier this year Harris Interactive conducted a survey among 2,037 adults ages 18 and older and the results yielded some interesting results. According to the 2012 Connecting and Communicating Online: State of Social Media study 62 percent of adults who are currently a member of more than one social networking site say they keep an eye on their social networks because they are afraid they might miss something – such as news of an important event or status update. You might be amazed to learn that findings indicate that nearly 40 percent would rather undertake unpleasant or potentially painful activities (such as getting a root canal or spending the night in jail) before they would give up their social networking profiles.

Not only are consumers afraid of what they might miss if they go too long between log-ins, but the younger generation often checks in with their friends and followers online before they're even fully awake! 38% of social media users' age 18-34 who have multiple profiles log onto their social network after they wake up and before their check email, and 27% send messages from within their social network more than from their primary email accounts.

You might be surprised to know that Facebook isn't the top of social media user's list when it comes to being the primary social profile they turn to for consuming or sharing content. LinkedIn is tops for consumption (to observe without actively posting anything); 68% of online adults who are a member

of LinkedIn say they use the site mainly to consume content.

You Tube (57%) and Twitter (53%) were next in line when it came to site where users tend to primarily view content without sharing. Pinterest, (the latest social media

darling) at 48% narrowly edged out Facebook at 46% as the site where users are most likely to equally consume and share content.

For those not yet familiar with Pinterest ( ) it is a virtual pin board. Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. You can use Pinterest to plan your wedding, decorate your home, or organize your favorite recipes. The fun and interaction starts when you browse pin boards created by other people and repin, like and comment on other's pin boards. It's a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.

Business is catching on to Pinterest too and not just small retailers – Big names like McDonalds and Guess use Pinterest to not only drive traffic to their sites (by Tweeting about a pin), but also in the creative and interactive use of contests on Pinterest. There's even a Pinterest website for businesses

that has case studies and a link to a free webinar 'The power of pinning' to help you use the site to get business, traffic and customers.

Although Pinterest is a great tool for marketing your business, it's only as effective as the real people behind it. Personality sells, both in person and on social media, so don't be afraid to be you and pin things just for fun as well. Being authentic builds trust with new prospects – are you connecting with the P word yet?

Coming up in the Fall are some of our most popular events; The BABA's, (British American Business Awards), where, by any standards, a decidedly impressive group of OC's corpo-rate CEO's and entrepreneurs will be recognized; a network-ing social at the South Coast Rep; our decidedly unstuffy British style Business Debate, all about education this year - where heckling is certainly encouraged - and of course our immensely popular Christmas luncheon that plays host to many corporate holiday lunch parties.

So let's keep our ABC's well in mind...and I certainly do look forward to seeing you at our next event!
