WELCOMEWelcome to the Department of Adult Continuing Education (DACE) where staff are firm advocates of lifelong learning and committed to providing flexible and appropriate learning opportunities for adult students.

The BA Part-time Degree Programme in Humanities, History and English is offered on Singleton Park and Hendefoelan campuses and in various community venues in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.

The programme is specifically designed for those who choose to study on a part-time basis because of work, family or other commitments. Our students come from many different walks of life and during the last 23 years, over 490 people have graduated from the programme gaining a qualification that can aid their career and provide a sense of achievement and self-fulfilment. The flexibility and structure of the degree programme has enabled them to study and achieve their goals while still continuing with their busy everyday lives.

PROGRAMME STRUCTUREYou can study part-time for a degree in Humanities, History or English. A wide range of courses are available in a variety of subjects, which allow you to tailor your studies to your own needs and interests.

You can choose two subjects to study each year throughout the programme and can also mix and match your choice of venues.

The majority of classes are delivered via the traditional face-to-face method. Classes in Pembrokeshire are often taught via a video-conferenced link from Swansea; an exciting and ongoing development. At all classes, a variety of teaching methods are used - from small seminars to discussion groups and workshops.

Throughout the part-time degree programme students receive extensive academic study support. Such support is organised and flexible and tailored to individual student needs.

TUTOR EXPERTISEAt DACE, we have an excellent group of tutors who, in addition to being experts in their own disciplines, are also committed to the education of adults and to widening access in general.

They have a fundamental role in enthusing students and it is largely due to their expertise and support that students are able to keep on-track, stay motivated and achieve to their full ability.

Professor C olin Trotman Head of Department

CROESOCroeso i’r Adran Addysg Barhaus Oedolion (AABO), lle mae’r staff yn hyrwyddwyr brwd dysgu gydol oes ac wedi ymrwymo i ddarparu cyfleoedd dysgu hyblyg ac addas i fyfyrwyr sy’n oedolion.

Cynigir y rhaglen radd ran-amser BA yn y Dyniaethau, Hanes a Saesneg ar y campws ym Mharc Singleton ac mewn nifer o leoliadau cymunedol yn Abertawe, Castell-nedd Port Talbot, Sir Gaerfyrddin a Sir Benfro.

Cynlluniwyd y rhaglen yn benodol ar gyfer y rhai sy’n dewis astudio ar sail ran-amser oherwydd ymrwymiadau gwaith, teuluol neu eraill. Daw ein myfyrwyr o lawer o gefndiroedd gwahanol, ac yn ystod y 23 o flynyddoedd diwethaf mae mwy na 490 o bobl wedi graddio o’r rhaglen, gan ennill cymhwyster a allai fod o gymorth yn eu gyrfâu a rhoi teimlad o gyrhaeddiad a hunangyflawniad iddynt. Mae hyblygrwydd a strwythur y rhaglen radd wedi’u galluogi i astudio ac i gyflawni eu hamcanion wrth barhau â’u bywydau prysur fel yr arfer.

STRWYTHUR Y RHAGLENGallwch astudio gradd ran-amser yn y Dyniaethau, Hanes neu Saesneg. Mae ystod eang o gyrsiau ar gael mewn amrywiaeth o bynciau sy’n caniatáu i chi deilwra’ch astudio i’ch anghenion a’ch diddordebau.

Gallwch ddewis dau bwnc i’w hastudio bob blwyddyn drwy gydol y rhaglen, a gallwch ddewis a chyfuno lleoliadau hefyd.

Cyflwynir y mwyafrif o’r cyrsiau drwy’r dull traddodiadol wyneb yn wyneb. Yn aml, dysgir dosbarthiadau yn Sir Benfro drwy gyswllt fideo-gynadledda o Abertawe, sy’n ddatblygiad cyffrous a pharhaus. Defnyddir amrywiaeth o ddulliau dysgu yn yr holl ddosbarthiadau – o seminarau bychain i grwpiau trafod a gweithdai.

Drwy gydol y rhaglen radd ran-amser mae’r myfyrwyr yn derbyn cymorth astudio academaidd helaeth. Mae’r cymorth hwnnw’n drefnus, yn hyblyg ac wedi’i deilwra i anghenion myfyrwyr unigol.

ARBENIGEDD Y TIWTORIAIDMae gennym grŵp ardderchog o diwtoriaid yn AABO sydd, yn ogystal â bod yn arbenigwyr yn eu meysydd pwnc eu hunain, wedi ymrwymo i ddysgu oedolion ac i ehangu mynediad yn gyffredinol.

Mae ganddynt rôl sylfaenol o ran ysbrydoli myfyrwyr, a’u harbenigedd a’u cefnogaeth sy’n gyfrifol yn bennaf am sicrhau bod myfyrwyr yn gallu dal ati, cynnal eu cymhelliad a chyflawni hyd eithaf eu gallu.

ACADEMIC STUDY SKILLS: TOOLS TO ENHANCE YOUR LEARNING

The STAR Handbook (Study Tips to Achieve Results) has been designed to identify and develop the academic skills students need to succeed. All Part-time Degree students will be given a copy of the STAR Handbook when they start their studies.

Academic Support Sessions for Part-time Degree students are organised regularly throughout the academic year and additional sessions can be held on campus and at community venues for students on request. Study Skills Tutors at DACE are here to help and can offer confidential advice and information. They can answer general queries regarding part-time studies and are available on a one-to-one basis, by telephone, by e-mail and/or in person. Students can make an appointment to see a Study Skills Tutor either on campus or at a community venue; they can also offer support for small groups of students around a specific area - such as essay preparation, report writing and referencing.

Support with IT is also available on request and this can be delivered on a one-to-one basis or for small groups of students who need some extra help. Subject Tutors are a key source of information and support, they can provide and advice and guidance on specific subject related issues.

The Assignment Survival Kit is an additional source of help and support and can be accessed via www.swansea.ac.uk/lis (click on ASK icon).

Library Visits can be organised for individual and/or groups of students on request. Campus Tours can also be organised for individual and/or groups of students on request.

University standards for essay writing and referencing can be confusing for new students. However, critical thinking and writing skills can develop through practice and the academic study support and resources we offer are designed to help students of all abilities and all backgrounds. We are eager for students to make the most of their learning experience and we offer a wide range of help and support to ensure that they achieve their full potential.

At DACE we recognise that new students often require support and encouragement before embarking upon the Part-time Degree. Our students come from all walks of life and need to have flexibility in the way that they study. Whatever their individual situation and needs - whether they are keen to update their computer / IT skills or writing skills or want to develop new learning strategies to support their Part-time Degree studies, we have something to offer.

Please find below a list of learning resources which can be accessed by all Part-time Degree students:

ACADEMIC STUDY SKILLS: TOOLS TO ENHANCE YOUR LEARNING

SGILIAU ASTUDIO ACADEMAIDD: OFFER I WELLA’CH DYSGU

Cynlluniwyd Llawlyfr Astudio i Gyflawni Canlyniadau (STAR - Study Tips to Achieve Results) i adnabod a datblygu’r sgiliau academaidd y mae eu hangen ar fyfyrwyr i lwyddo. Rhoir copi o’r Llawlyfr STAR i bob myfyriwr sy’n astudio gradd ran-amser pan fyddant yn dechrau eu hastudiaethau.

Trefnir Sesiynau Cymorth Academaidd i fyfyrwyr rhan-amser yn gyson drwy gydol y flwyddyn academaidd, a gellir cynnal sesiynau ychwanegol i fyfyrwyr ar y campws ac mewn lleoliadau cymunedol ar gais.

Mae Tiwtoriaid Sgiliau Astudio AABO ar gael i helpu, a gallant gynnig cyngor a gwybodaeth yn gyfrinachol. Gallant ateb ymholiadau cyffredinol ynghylch astudiaethau rhan-amser ac maent ar gael i fyfyrwyr yn unigol dros y ffôn, drwy e-bost a/neu wyneb yn wyneb. Gall myfyrwyr wneud apwyntiad i weld Tiwtor Sgiliau Astudio naill ai ar y campws neu mewn lleoliad cymunedol. Gallant hefyd gynnig cefnogaeth i grwpiau bach o fyfyrwyr ar faes penodol, megis paratoi traethodau, ysgrifennu adroddiadau a chyfeirnodi.

Mae cefnogaeth TG hefyd ar gael ar gais, a gellir ei darparu yn unigol neu i grwpiau bach o fyfyrwyr sydd angen ychydig o gymorth ychwanegol. Mae Tiwtoriaid Pwnc yn ffynhonnell allweddol o wybodaeth a chefnogaeth sy’n gallu rhoi cyngor ac arweiniad ar faterion penodol i bwnc.

Mae’r Pecyn Goroesi Aseiniadau yn ffynhonnell cymorth a chefnogaeth ychwanegol sydd ar gael yn www.swansea.ac.uk/cy/ggs (cliciwch ar yr eicon ASK).

Gellir trefnu Ymweliadau â’r Llyfrgell i unigolion a/neu grwpiau o fyfyrwyr ar gais. Gellir trefnu Teithiau o’r Campws i unigolion a/neu grwpiau o fyfyrwyr ar gais hefyd.

Gall safonau prifysgol ar gyfer ysgrifennu traethodau a chyfeirnodi fod yn ddryslyd i lawer o fyfyrwyr newydd. Fodd bynnag, gall sgiliau ysgrifennu a meddwl beirniadol myfyrwyr ddatblygu drwy ymarfer, a nod yr adnoddau a’r cymorth astudio academaidd a gynigiwn yw helpu myfyrwyr o bob gallu a phob cefndir. Rydym yn awyddus i fyfyrwyr wneud y mwyaf o’u profiad dysgu, ac rydym yn cynnig amrywiaeth eang o gymorth a chefnogaeth i sicrhau eu bod yn cyflawni’u potensial yn llawn.

Yn AABO rydym yn cydnabod bod angen cefnogaeth ac anogaeth yn aml ar fyfyrwyr newydd cyn iddynt ddechrau eu gradd ran-amser. Daw ein myfyrwyr o bob cefndir, ac mae angen hyblygrwydd yn y ffordd maent yn astudio. Beth bynnag eu sefyllfa a’u hanghenion unigol, p’un ai eu bod yn awyddus i ddiweddaru eu sgiliau cyfrifiadurol/TG neu ysgrifennu, neu am ddatblygu strategaethau dysgu newydd i gefnogi’u hastudiaethau gradd ran-amser, gallwn gynnig rhywbeth.

Mae rhestr o’r adnoddau dysgu y gall myfyrwyr gradd ran-amser eu defnyddio isod:

Tales of Terror: Ghosts, Monsters and Other Anxieties in LiteratureFHEQ Level 4 Codes: DAD1030 (20 credits) and DAD1031 (10 credits)

Do you think about why films such as Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining or Ridley Scott’s Alien, continue to send shivers down your spine, even on repeat viewings? What do these ‘tales of terror’ tell us about ourselves and the world in which we live? Do they shed a light on cultural anxieties and particular periods in history, or are they pure escapism? How do they tap into our most intimate fears and desires, and how are they expressed and represented in our literary and cinematic culture?

In this module you will study range of literature (including poetry, novels and short stories) and cinematic texts, which focus on and explore the shadowy worlds created through figures of fear, feelings of excess and paranoia, and texts that test the limits of reason, or ‘what we know’, creating blurred boundaries between what is real and what is imagined.

detail. Such topics will include personality development, social development and language development. The latter part of this course will examine the act of play and its role in learning. Finally the development of attachment will be considered, with specific focus on the phases of attachment.

The Cold WarFHEQ Level 5 Codes: DAL203 (20 credits) and DAL204 (10 credits). FHEQ Level 6 Codes: DAL300 (20 credits) and DAL301 (10 credits)

This module seeks to examine the key defining periods in the history of the twentieth century. The relationship of ‘neither war nor peace’ between the United States and the former Soviet Union. This affected not simply the principal actors, but the whole global system of international relations. Similarly, its effects were not simply political but economic, social and cultural. At one level this was a classis power struggle, at another the conflict was deeply infused with ideological factors. Significantly, it was not a relationship of unremitting hostility because periods of high tension were intermixed with periods of ‘détente’. Finally, the Cold War ended in dramatic fashion after 1989.

The Craft of the Short StoryFHEQ Level 5 Codes: DAD215 (20 credits) and DAD216 (10 credits). FHEQ Level 6 Codes: DAD316 (20 credits) and DAD317 (10 credits)

The main focus will be upon the development of the modern short story form as a literary genre. By tracing its Russian and French origins through writers such as Gogol, Chekhov and Maupassant, and considering the influence of American and British writers such as Poe, Hemmingway, Raymond Carver, Joyce, Angela Carter, Dylan Thomas, Kate Roberts and others, wide cultural, historical and critical perspectives will influence considerations of the contemporary short story form. There will be a creative writing element to this module where students can write their own short stories.

Crime and DevianceFHEQ Level 5 Codes: DAM206 (20 credits) and DAM207 (10 credits). FHEQ Level 6 Codes: DAM306 (20 credits) and DAM307 (10 credits)

This module aims to introduce students to current perspectives and debates on crime and deviance. In particular, it will focus on issues of: How much crime? Has crime increased? The role of the mass media and its influence on societal reactions to crime and deviance will be discussed.

From Page to Screen and Back Again: Studies in AdaptationFHEQ Level 5 Codes: DAD263 (20 credits) and DAD264 (10 credits). FHEQ Level 6 Codes DAD365 (20 credits) and DAD366 (10 credits).

Have you ever wondered how Pride and Prejudice became the eponymous Bridget Jones’s Diary? Or considered what kinds of dialogue can be seen taking place between Charlotte Bronte’s classic Victorian novel Jane Eyre and Jean Rhys’s post-colonial novel Wide Sargasso Sea, or between Shakespeare’s vision of Hamlet and contemporary re-writings/re-visioning of the moody Dane?

In looking at ‘texts in dialogue’, this module will consider adaptation in the diversity of its meanings, its forms, across genres, cross-media platforms and cross-cultural contexts. Among other things, we will look at the changing representation from literature to film, the relationship between ‘source’ texts and their various adaptations (whether they be from novel to film/TV, from poem to play, or from novel to graphic novel). We will consider theories of the text, notions of ‘fidelity’, the status of the ‘original’ and the author.

DISCLAIMER

We have endeavoured to ensure that the information contained within this brochure is accurate at the time of production.

DACE reserves the right to alter or cancel courses where circumstances demand. Times and locations may vary and can be subject to change. Any information you provide to DACE will be treated in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

DATA PROTECTION NOTICE

Information held by the University about you, (such as information on your registration form) is added to a database, extracts from which are passed to central government departments and agencies and devolved administrations, which require it to enable them to carry out their statutory functions. You may wish to note that your contact details will not be made available, your names will not be used or included in statistical analysis and precautions are taken to minimise the risk that you will be able to be identified from the data.

UNSPENT CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS

If you have declared that you have an unspent criminal conviction, you will be asked to complete a Conviction form requesting information about the nature of the conviction/caution which will be considered by the Department who will decide whether or not your application can proceed. Criminal records will be taken into account only when the conviction is relevant.

YMWADIAD

Rydym wedi ymdrechu i ofalu bod yr wybodaeth yn y llyfryn hwn yn gywir ar adeg yr argraffu.

Mae’r Adran Addysg Barhaus i Oedolion (AABO) yn cadw’r hawl i newid neu ganslo cyrsiau lle bo amgylchiadau yn galw am hynny. Gall amseroedd a lleoliadau newid. Caiff unrhyw wybodaeth y byddwch yn ei darparu i AABO ei thrin yn unol â darpariaethau’r Ddeddf Diogelu Gwybodaeth.

RHYBUDD DIOGELU DATA

Caiff gwybodaeth y mae’r Brifysgol yn ei dal amdanoch (megis yr wybodaeth ar eich ffurflen gofrestru) ei chadw ar gronfa ddata, a bydd rhannau ohoni yn cael eu pasio i adrannau o’r llywodraeth ganolog a’i hasiantaethau, a llywodraethau datganoledig, sydd eu hangen er mwyn cyflawni eu swyddogaethau statudol. Efallai y byddwch am nodi na fyddwn yn datgelu eich manylion cyswllt, ni chaiff eich enwau eu defnyddio na’u cynnwys mewn gwaith dadansoddi ystadegol, a chymerir rhagofalon er mwyn lleihau’r risg y bydd modd eich adnabod ar sail y data.

COLLFARNAU HEB DDARFOD

Os ydych chi wedi datgelu bod gennych gollfarn heb ddarfod, gofynnir i chi gwblhau Ffurflen Euogfarn sy’n gofyn am wybodaeth am natur y gollfarn/rhybudd. Bydd yr adran yn ystyried yr wybodaeth hon cyn penderfynu a gaiff eich cais fynd yn ei flaen. Ni chymerir collfarn i ystyriaeth oni bai ei bod yn berthnasol.

Yn anffodus, mae’n bosibl na fydd modd cadarnhau’ch lle yn AABO os tybir y gall eich euogfarn amharu ar ddyletswydd y Brifysgol i ofalu am fyfyrwyr eraill a staff. Os cewch euogfarn am dramgwydd troseddol perthnasol ar ôl i chi gychwyn ar eich cwrs, mae’n rhaid i chi roi gwybod i ni ar unwaith.
