Control Measures1. The forward rotating duty system helps reduce sleep loss and fatigue. 2. Maintaining existing compensatory rest arrangements, consisting of two (2) unbroken periods of 24 hours free from work each week.3. 3Recuperation time before and following a Back to Back must be a minimum of 12 hours to prevent disruption of the sleep/wake cycle and fatigue.4. Advice and support from the Service Occupational Health Advisor including.5. Annual night working questionnaires and the provision of health assessments on request.6. Systems in place for the early reporting of problems associated with shift work and health assessments every three years.

Task 1Working back to back shifts (maximum of two (2) consecutive shifts covering 24 hours).
Control Measures continued8. A period of stand down time from midnight to 07:00 hrs is provided other than where required to respond to emergency calls or perform other essential activities.9. Adequate and suitable rest facilities to aid sleep, recuperation and relaxation whilst on duty and at work. Recreational and fitness training facilities are provided and maintained to aid relaxation and recuperation.10. During work precautions:Where practicable an appropriate workload with varied activities will be provided with flexibility for Commanders regarding the order of completion of work tasks.11. Periodic refreshment and rest breaks will be provided to assist recuperation.12. The provision of a facility for employees to remain on station and rest prior to travelling home with management approval.

Shift pattern complies with requirements of NJC Conditions of Service (average of 42 hours per week over reference period 8 weeks).3. Policy controls on secondary work activities and overtime undertaken during off duty periods.4. Policy controls on compensatory time off in lieu for attendance on training courses during off duty periods.5. During work precautions:Procedures for maintaining records of hours worked by individual members of staff to be monitored by line managers.6. Operational commanders will be provided with the flexibility to adjust work activities to allow adequate rest and recuperation following repeated, strenuous, traumatic or prolonged incidents.3. Other preparatory precautions detailed in controls for normal or response driving, strenuous training and routine activities over a 24 hr period.4. During work precautions:Length of time individual crews spend at prolonged incidents will be monitored and relief crews will be used where appropriate.5. First attendance pumps / stations will be rotated during spate conditions to manage the number of turnouts by individual crews.
