These reports are meant to update the Board members on current issues and to provide relevant information to the public. Summer Measure I1 projects are in full swing. This past week, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Micaela Ochoa and I joined the members of the Measure I1 Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee for a tour several of those projects. We received an update from PUSD’s Director of Facilities and Construction Mr. Nick Olsen, and then the committee returned to the District Office to begin work on their annual report which will be presented to the Board in the Fall. A few of our 2018-2019 accomplishments were not on the tour, but were discussed during the meeting. The network upgrade work and COP payoff were key components of the first Measure I1 issuance. While not specific to Measure I1, the committee also discussed our 2018-2019 Proposition 39 projects. These included the replacement of exterior lighting at all PUSD sites with energy efficient fixtures, and the HVAC and roofing work currently under completion at Pleasanton Middle School.

Please find below the updates from our divisional heads. These reports are meant to update the Board members on current issues and to provide relevant information to the public. This weekend I have updates on the following eight items: 1. Foothill High School Field Project 2. Maintenance and Operations Staffing 3. Facilities Funding Consultants 4. Developer Fee Study 5. Audit Committee 6. Financial Advisors and Keygent Binder 7. Garbage Services Request For Proposal 8. Staffing at Pleasanton Middle School (PMS)

Foothill High School Field Project We are happy to report that the purchase order to proceed with the replacement for the artificial field at Foothill High School has been issued to the contractor. They have started ordering the project materials, and we are waiting to receive an updated construction schedule from them. As soon as we have it we will let you know. As an update on the donation, the first donation per the updated donation plan approved by the Board on June 11 has been received. We will continue to update the Board on the progress of the project. Maintenance and Operations Personnel The M&O department continues to be impacted by personnel on leave or light duty due to Workers’ Compensation claims. Currently, one groundskeeper, one skilled maintenance worker, and the mechanic are on modified duty. One groundskeeper and one skilled maintenance worker are currently on leave. The department continues its efforts to find qualified substitutes and additionally, is going through the “meet and confer” process with CSEA prior to hiring outside help. Facilities Funding Consultant The Facilities & Construction department will be re-issuing an RFP for Facilities Funding Consultant Services starting in July 2019. The scope of services will include calculating the District’s state funding eligibility for modernization and new construction projects as well as applying for reimbursement from the state for those funds. The District did issue an RFP for the same services in November 2018 but only received one proposal that was over budget. Developer Fee Study It’s been about 3.5 years since we increased our developer fees. You might recall we increased the fees shortly after I started. Last year we hired a consultant to conduct the justification fee study, and we received the draft results. This item was delayed/put on hold to complete other projects. It will need to be a priority for the new replacement for my position this summer. Audit Committee

On Thursday, June 13th, we held our Audit Committee meeting. The auditors presented an overview of this years’ audit. The next Audit committee meeting, which is when the preliminary findings (if any) will be shared, is scheduled for: ● Tuesday, November 19, 2019 from 5:30 PM - 7 PM

Financial Advisor Update On June 19, 2019, we held Interviews with four firms to financial advisory services. The interview committee unanimously selected Keygent. We plan to make a recommendation to the board on June 25, 2019. Please note that Keygent presented us with binders that contain a wealth of information. I asked them for 5 additional copies for the Board of Trustees. The binders are in your mailboxes. Garbage RFP We will be pursuing an RFP for garbage services. We will be providing more information in a future weekend update. Staffing at Pleasanton Middle School Trustee Maher had asked why the office staffing at PMS was so much higher than at the other middle schools, or if the figure in the budget assumptions document was accurate. The office staffing figures are explained in Tuesday, June 25th Board Item (Budget Assumptions).

DOUGLAS, ED.D., ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT, EDUCATIONAL SERVICES Smarter Balanced Assessment Results 2019 Pleasanton Unified School District students in grades 3-8 and 11 were administered the Smarter Balanced Assessment for English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science during Spring 2019. Preliminary results for this assessment were made available beginning June 1st and have been uploaded

into the District Student Information System, “Q”. Parents and guardians are currently able to access Electronic Student Score reports for English Language Arts and Math using the Parent Portal in “Q”. The Assessment and Accountability Department has created an SBAC 5 Years Overall Summary which provides an overview of SBAC results for the past five years, including the longitudinal growth from 2015-2019. A summary of assessment results can be reviewed here. 2018-19 Tri-Valley ROP (Regional Occupational Programs) Highlights The District remains quite fortunate to have college and career readiness Tri-Valley ROP courses and pathways available to assist all students achieve their post secondary education goals. Included in the report linked here are the highlights of our award winning Tri-Valley ROP accomplishments during the 2018-19 school year. This detailed, informative report was shared recently at the June 19th Tri-Valley ROP Joint Powers Governing Board Meeting. Enjoy! 2019-21 School Plans for Student Achievement Board Report Follow-up At the May 7th Board of Education Meeting, members of the Board of Trustees reviewed School Plans for Student Achievement for all schools in Pleasanton Unified School District. At that time, a question was posed regarding the Smarter Balanced Assessment Results from 2017-2018 that are included in every plan. Specifically for three schools, it was noted that the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics had decreased over the past three years. In order to respond to this question, we are providing the following information and brief analysis. The charts referenced in the School Plans have been added below as well as a bar graph for each school showing percentages of students who have not met, nearly met, met and exceeded proficiency in grade level standards for 2016, 2017 and 2018. The standard deviation for each data set has been included for reference. A low standard deviation means that most of the numbers are close to the average, while a high standard deviation means that the numbers are more spread out. Dyslexia Action Plan Update We at PUSD recognize the specific learning needs of students with phonological processing deficits, dyslexia and/or other reading challenges. The Educational Services and Special Education Teams have developed, in collaboration with site administrators and teachers, a detailed Dyslexia Action Plan to ensure students with Dyslexia are receiving appropriate services. The Pleasanton Unified School District Dyslexia Think Tank (comprised of leaders, teachers, and parents/guardians) has met several times this school year to continue to discuss the implementation of our action plan and communicate our work to the community. Our Think Tank Team held a

Dyslexia Parent Information Night on March 20, 2019. Dr. Kathy Futterman shared information to parents on supports for students with Dyslexia. Participants received information on resources to support students at home. We remain pleased with the work underway to address the learning needs of all students. Click here for additional information. “Three changes that can help the Class of 2030 succeed” According to this article, kindergartners who just completed the 2018-19 school year are the class of 2030. It states, “....by the time they enter the workforce, it will look vastly different. Occupations will need expertise, creativity, grit, and, most importantly, people who can learn and cultivate new skills.” Linked here is a summary report. This information supports our Response to Instruction and Intervention and Multi-Tiered System of Support best practices. Site administrators have been requested to share this information with their staff, parents/ guardians, and community members. Summer Enrichment 2019 Youth and Young Adult Summer Enrichment, organized through Adult & Career Education in collaboration with Summer Programs, started last week! The goal of these classes is to provide low or no cost, high quality summer learning opportunities to our families. LCAP (Local Control and Accountability Plan) funds are used to waive fees for all qualifying students. At current enrollment, roughly 30 students are participating in the STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) camp and 33 students are participating in the Afternoon Day Camp (following summer school at Walnut Grove) made possible through LCAP funds for enrichment. An additional 29 students are taking other courses utilizing LCAP funds for enrichment. There are presently 301 class enrollments for the classes which will take place between June 17-27 and July 8-18. Adult Education High School Diploma and Equivalency Graduation Celebration On June 19, 2019, we celebrated eleven adult learners who earned their high school diploma or completed the full battery of the High School Equivalency Test this year. This was our second graduating class since reopening the Pleasanton Adult and Career Education Department. It was a joyous event!

Update to Short Term Independent Study Procedures for the 2019-20 School Year At the board meeting on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, staff from the Student Support Services department presented an update to the board and community regarding the two independent study options in PUSD. The short term independent study contracts are to be used when students are anticipated to miss school from five (5) to ten (10) school days. For more information regarding short term independent study contracts, students and parents/guardians should review the procedures linked here. Staff also presented information on the long term independent study program available to students in grades K-12. Enrollment in these classes are generally for students who are interested in a semester long option, can complete work independently and meet with the teacher one time per week. If students are interested in this option, they should contact the Principal of Village High School. Extended School Year (ESY) The Extended School Year program for students in Special Education finished its second successful week. Harvest Park Preschool has a total of two classes, Walnut Grove Elementary has six classes, and Amador Valley has seven classes. Our preschool, elementary, middle ESY program will end July 15th. Our high school ESY program will end July 18th. It’s been a great two weeks for the staff and students!

Concluding Comments This week’s Board meeting agenda includes the approval of our 2019-2020 budget and LCAP, which are two important guiding documents for our ongoing work. I will also take forward several important appointments. These include the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning (title change from Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services), the Director of Elementary Education, two Coordinators of High School Operations, and a few potential site administrator positions (internal candidate interviews are scheduled for tomorrow). Our HR team is working diligently to fill all open positions as quickly as possible, so that training can occur during the summer months. I am pleased to see so many of them being filled by internal candidates, which is aligned to our organizational goal to recruit, train, and retain highly qualified staff.

While many are off enjoying their summer break, others PUSD staff members remain focused on preparing the schools and programs for the 2019-2020 school year. We are so grateful for our classified staff who work throughout the summer to make sure schools are ready to receive student in August. You can track the progress of our Measure I1 construction projects here (links on the right hand side of the page). Information specific to the Amador Valley solar project can be found here, including a project timeline, a circulation plan, a Frequently Asked Questions page, and contact information for other inquiries. While you may not see much movement on the construction site yet, much is being done in behind the scenes (surveying, steel beam construction, etc.) so the heavy work can begin. You can note these items on the project timeline which you can find on the links provided above. I have been assured by our Facilities team that we are on track and anticipate the reopening of the lot in mid-October, if not earlier. This will be the final Bulletin to the Board for the 2018-2019 school year. We will resume our communications towards the end of July.
