President’s Message… Maureen M KarasIt is hard to believe, but late evening 97 days from today, all of us will know who the next President of the United States will be. I am placing my bet on “45” – President Mitt Romney! As each day passes, I become more and more encouraged that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will get a large percentage of the Independent vote as well as many disheartened Democrats who feel their party has abandoned them. I ask each and every one of you to do what you can to make a difference in what will be the election of our lifetime. If you haven’t signed up to volunteer at Team Nevada or support candidates of your choosing, please do so. Remember what Mark Hutchison told us – By the time the election comes around our shoe leather should be a little worn, our bodies fatigued and our wallets a little thinner. Winning this election will take all of us doing what we can and working together to make Nevada RED in 2012. And now onto this month’s message……. First, I want to thank each you for your contributions to our two candidate fundraisers, the one in May at the Italian American Club and last month’s brunch at Spanish Trail. These successful events and your approval allowed ARW to join the Republican Women of Southern Nevada Political Action Committee (RWSN PAC) at the highest level of participation giving our club a vote on how the collected funds are to be distributed. The required $2500 donation for 2012 has already been made, and the final donation of $1000 will be made in 2013 as stipulated in the membership guidelines.
This is a very exciting moment for ARW. We have wanted to contribute to candidates for a long time, and this year we are! So far, there are 4 NvFRW Clubs that have joined the RWSN PAC at the 2-year $3500 level: Republican Women of Las Vegas, Spring Mountain Republican Women, Southern Hills Republican Women and ARW. At the entry level with a $300 annual commitment is the newly formed North Vegas Valley Republican Women. With 4 clubs at the highest level, there are 4 votes on the PAC Board, one per club. The ARW Executive Board agreed that ARW’s
President would be the voting member on the PAC Board.
The PAC Board held its first meeting in mid-August to gain consensus on the goals the PAC wants to achieve with the money it distributes. A decision is forthcoming in a week or so with the funds targeted for distribution sometime later this month. Once that decision has been made, an announcement to all of you will be forthcoming!

President’s Message… continuedHats off to our RWSN PAC Chair Kay Butchko who has worked tirelessly in making this endeavor so successful and in such a short amount of time. Republican Women certainly know how to get things done! Women in numbers WIN! Secondly, another important election is on the horizon. ARW will begin the process of electing a new executive board for the 2013-2014 Biennium. The nominating committee is in the process of forming. Chris Hall and Barbara Altman, two board members, have volunteered so far. At the September general membership meeting, we will nominate and elect three members from the general membership.
This committee of five will meet during the month of September in order to present a slate of officers to the membership at the October meeting. The offices to be voted upon are President, 1st Vice President – Programs, 2nd Vice President – Membership, Treasurer and Secretary. Then at the November meeting, we will take additional nominations from the floor and vote. Installations will be in December. If you would like to run for office, please let Chris Hall, Barbara Altman or me know of your interest.
See you next month !

GOT BOOKS?
The ARW Literacy Committee has two requests for book donations. Bring donations to the meetings or contact Molly Governs ([email protected]) for delivery.
#1. Gently used or new books for elementary aged children. Good sources for these books are general house cleaning, garage sales, sales tables in various stores such as bookstores, WalMart or COSTCO.
Each year we give these books to elementary schools where children can take them home as a start for their own libraries. Last year we were able to collect enough for a classroom at C.P. Squires Elementary School in North Las Vegas. Please help.
#2. Used books, DVD’s, audio books for the Veteran’s Home in Boulder City. Large print books are especially appreciated, but not required. These donations are an extra donation to these wonderful warriors on Veteran’s Day.
GOT TIME?Virtually every elementary school in Las Vegas and North Las Vegas would love to have guest readers their classrooms. If an hour here or there can be spared please contact Molly Governs ([email protected]) and receive an informative email filled with tips on reading to elementary children. A needy school can be selected or the school down the street from where you live will both be appreciative of your time and effort.
Please support our ARW with these much needed donations.
Many thanks!

Caring for the American SoldierBy Diane Welch, Chair of ARW Caring for the American Soldier
There is a lot going on in ARW and the Federation geared to caring for our active duty and retired military and YOU, our members, are making it happen! First, the members of ARW continue to give generously toward our current drive to support the USO at McCarran Airport. We will pass the buckets one more time at our August meeting for this worthy outreach that provides comfort to our troops and their families. Thank you all for your generosity! Our boutique continues to take orders for the patriotic wine bags with all the proceeds going towards Honor Flights for WWII veterans to visit the memorial in
Washington, D.C. Don't forget to pick up or order your wine bags from the boutique at our next meeting. They make great gifts, particularly during this election year! Finally, we are participating with the Federation in helping to register friends, family members, and acquaintances in the National WWII Registry. To register someone, please go to the following website and follow the instructions: http://www.wwiimemorial.com/default.asp?page=registry.asp. If you or someone you knows registers a veteran, please let me know so that we can keep track of our club's involvement in this effort. We want to get credit for our support of the Federation's efforts to increase the number of WWII veterans included in the registry.
