A NOTE FROM FR. GREG MILLER, OSB
MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS
FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE 51st WORLD DAY OF PEACE 2018
Migrants and refugees: men and women in search of peace “The wisdom of faith fosters a contemplative gaze that recognizes that all of us belong to one family, migrants and the local populations that welcome them, and all have the same right to enjoy the goods of the earth, whose destination is universal,
as the social doctrine of the Church teaches.”
“When we turn that gaze to migrants & refugees, we discover that they do not arrive empty-handed. They bring their courage, skills, energy, aspirations, as well as
the treasures of their own cultures; and in this way, they enrich the lives of the nations that receive them. We also come to see the creativity, tenacity & spirit of sacrifice of the countless individuals, families and communities around the world who open their
doors and hearts to migrants & refugees, even where resources are scarce.”
“A contemplative gaze should also guide the discernment of those responsible for the public good, and encourage them to pursue policies of welcome, within the limits
allowed by a correct understanding of the common good”
“Those who see things in this way will be able to recognize the seeds of peace that are already sprouting and nurture their growth. Our cities, often divided and po-larized by conflicts regarding the presence of migrants and refugees, will thus turn
into workshops of peace.”
On January 7, the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, the Catholic Church in Minnesota will observe Immigration Sunday. This annual observance is a day to show
support for our immigrant brothers & sisters. For the 2018 observance, we have been asked to draw special attention to the uncertainty surrounding the Deferred Action for
Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. As part of immigration Sunday, I invite you to participate in a postcard campaign to your elected representative in Congress urging
passage of the DREAM Act in support of DACA youth. Postcards will be available at mass.
Together we go to God, PAX, Father Greg Miller OSB

REFLECTION ON THE GOSPEL Luke tells us a rather unique story, often referred to as “The Presentation of the Lord”. While still an infant, Jesus is taken to the temple by his parents. Simeon and Anna greet the child separately. It is
significant that Luke includes Anna. For Luke, not even Simeon is called a prophet. Instead Anna is a
prophetess, foreshadowing the equality women enjoy in the ideal Christian life. This gospel story, unique to Luke, reminds us of the equality of women and men, the relationship of the family, and the
importance of human development as a place for God’s favor.

2018~WISDOM FOR A NEW YEAR
Yearning for a new way will not produce it. Only ending the old way can do that. You cannot hold onto the old, all the while declaring that you want something new.
The old will defy the new; The old will deny the new; The old will decry the new.
There is only one way to bring in the new. You must make room for it. ~Neale Donald Walsch
