Academic Approach

Learning Objec�vesOur aim at Basil Paterson Edinburgh is to provide alearning environment which helps all students toreach their full poten�al. Whether your objec�ve isto improve your English skills for work, university orlife in an English­speaking country, you'll find thatstudying at Basil Paterson provides the focus anddrive that you need. With a class maximum of 12students from all over the world, you have theopportunity to interact in a truly interna�onalenvironment. Tailored support from experiencedteachers, weekly assessments and individualcoaching sessions help our learners to achieve theiraims. Our methodology ensures that learners arenot only developing their language range andaccuracy, but also developing essen�al skills such ascri�cal thinking, public speaking, self­study methodsand compensa�on strategies. We expect learnerson our adult courses to take ownership of thelearning process, working with their teacherstowards a common goal.

Course levelWe ask every student to complete a needsanalysis and placement test before arrival and ashort speaking assessment on the first day. Thisgives us essen�al informa�on about your Englishlanguage level, your goals, your needs and whichclass would be most suitable for you. Studentsmove at different speeds and there is no fixed�me for studying at each level. Progress dependson mo�va�on, self­study habits, learning

strategies and language immersion. We expectstudents to work hard and focus on their goals,but also to be realis�c about what is achievable inthe �me they have.

Assessment Learners have a weekly assessment every Fridaymorning. This is designed to assess your progress,help you revise what you have studied and pushyou to apply new language and skills. Yourteachers will assess your progress in class all the�me, by reading your wri�en work, listening toyour spoken produc�on and evalua�ng yourperformance in class. They will give you regularfeedback and discuss your progress during weeklycoaching sessions. Students are also expected toself­assess regularly, evalua�ng their ownprogress in rela�on to their goals.

CoachingEvery Friday learners are invited for an individualcoaching session. The purpose of these sessionsis to provide an opportunity to discuss your ownprogress and to set achievable goals for self­study. We expect all learners to take responsibilityfor their own learning and work hard outside ofclass �me. Think about what you want and needto improve most and how you can do thisindependently. Make sure your objec�ves areSMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevantand �me­bound).

Homework Our courses are designed to be intensive andlearners should expect homework every night andover the weekend. Doing self­study regularly willensure you make be�er progress and developgood learning habits. Remember that homeworkdoesn’t need to be a wri�en exercise. Why notchallenge yourself to make a phone call to acompany in English, interview your homestayhosts or watch a TED Talk on an interes�ng topic?

Cer�ficatesAt the end of your course, you will be given acer�ficate showing your course dates, a�endanceand assessment of your level of spokenproduc�on, spoken interac�on, reading, listeningand wri�ng skills. The levels are based on yourteachers’ evalua�on of your level with referenceto the Common European Framework forLanguages.

The day of study starts with a morning discussionsession, bringing students from all classestogether. Interes�ng topics are selected from localand interna�onal news as a springboard fordiscussion. The rest of the day consists ofcarefully designed lessons which cater for yourdiverse needs.

Spoken Performance WorkshopWith a focus on pronunciation and using role­plays, presentations and discussions, learnersdevelop their oral fluency, enabling them tooperate confidently in a variety of real­lifesituations in English.

Language FocusAuthen�c target language and grammar points areintroduced in this session, helping learners developa solid founda�on in English language.

Language PracticeBuilding upon the language introduced in theprevious class, learners have the opportunity toput their new knowledge into prac�ce throughspeaking and wri�ng ac�vi�es.

Reading and Wri�ng Skills FocusThis class provides intensive focus on improvingyour reading and wri�ng skills, as needed for yourfuture work or studies.

Project WorkshopThis class mirrors the project work andcollabora�on which takes place in English aroundthe world every day. In addi�on to your Englishlanguage skills, you also develop your problem­solving, interpersonal, research and organisa�onalskills.

The BULATS Reading and Listening exam is aflexible online test which provides formalcer�fica�on of English comprehension level forprofessionals. Fes�val CourseIn August every year, Edinburgh comes alive forthe Interna�onal and Fringe fes�vals, withthousands of performances taking place in venuesacross the city, including dance, theatre, comedyand the world­famous Edinburgh Military Ta�oo.We harness this energy in the classroom with ourFes�val course, which runs from 6th to 24thAugust. The course structure mirrors the EnglishFocus programme, combining essen�al languageand skills development and an a�ernoon ProjectWorkshop inspired by the Edinburgh Fes�val. Onpast courses students have prepared anddelivered a performance, led their own guidedtour and produced a fes�val documentary,demonstra�ng their new­found confidence in asecond language. The course is complemented bya full and varied social and cultural programme,with eight ac�vi�es scheduled per week.

Tutorial CollegeBasil Paterson Tutorial College specialises in pre­

university qualifications and offers students a

direct pathway to further and higher education.

We deliver academic programmes at National 5,

Higher, Advanced Higher, GCSE and A Level.

Full time courses are 4­5 hours per week per

subject and are taught over the full academic

year. We have the option of small class sizes,

with no more than 6 students in a class, or

individual tuition. For students wishing to apply

to college or university, we offer close individual

support and monitoring of all college and UCAS

applications.

Intensive revision courses run at Easter for

National 5, Higher, Advanced Higher, GCSE and

A Level. Year­round flexible tuition is also

Accommoda�on

We want your experience in Edinburgh to be as enjoyable as possible and for that reason we offer awide choice of accommoda�on op�ons. Whether you prefer an immersed experience in a homestay orrequire more independence, our dedicated accommoda�on staff will help you find the right op�on.

Homestay £207 per week (shared bathroom) or £334 per week (private bathroom)

Living in a homestay has many advantages. Most importantly, you have the chance to prac�se Englishthroughout your stay, to interact with local people and to immerse yourself in the local culture andlanguage. We choose our homestay families very carefully, both for the facili�es they have to offer and,especially, their ability to give you the warmth and welcome of a “home from home”. At your homestayyou will eat meals with the other members of the household and share the common living areas. Youare provided with a single room, or shared room if required, breakfast and dinner every day and aquiet place for study. Homestays are located in residen�al areas of Edinburgh, typically 30­40 minutesfrom the college on good bus routes.

Student residence (July/Aug) from £250 per week

During summer months we can offer several different university residence op�ons; ideal for studentsaged over 18 who would like a more independent living experience. At a student residence you willhave a single room with private bathroom, access to shared kitchen facili�es and common living areas.Most residence op�ons are within walking distance from the college. Please note that demand forstudent residence accommoda�on is high during the summer months, so we recommend booking asearly as possible to avoid disappointment.

Private apartments from £500 per week

These are available throughout the year and range from studios to mul�­bedroom flats. We workclosely with several reputable le�ng agencies who offer accommoda�on in central Edinburgh. Pleasecontact us with your travel dates to confirm availability and price.

A recent survey revealed our top five mostpopular social and cultural programmeactivities.

1. Traditional Storytelling in the CollegeOur most popular activity by far. We inviteprofessional storytellers to the college to telltraditional Scottish stories, talk about localculture and give students the opportunity toshare their own stories.

2. Scottish Ceilidh DancingAt a traditional Scottish ceilidh, you won’tjust be a spectator; you’ll be a participant.Scottish dancing is fun, energetic, sociableand all ceilidhs have a ‘caller’; someone whoteaches you the dance steps.

3. Escape Room Working with a team of your classmates,you’ll use your critical thinking and problem­solving skills to escape from a room. Will youmanage to escape before your time is up?

4. Visit to the Scottish Parliament Learn more about this historic andcontroversial building and go inside thedebating chamber to listen to live debates.

5. Walk up Arthur’s SeatDid you know that Edinburgh is built aroundseven hills? A short walk to the top ofArthur’s Seat provides beautiful views of thecity skyline.

At Basil Paterson Edinburgh we believe thelearning experience should continue onceclasses have finished for the day. Our coursesrun alongside a varied social and culturalprogramme, which provide an opportunity forstudents to learn about the Scottish capital andmake friends with both international and localstudents in a relaxed and informal setting. During the summer months we offer eightweekday activities per week and at least fouractivities per week during the rest of the year.The schedule changes every week, designed toprovide something for all ages and interests.The majority of our activities are free of charge,with a small supplement for certain activitiessuch as theatre visits or Scottish ceilidhdancing. We can also help students to bookweekend trips to other parts of Scotland andmake recommendations about the best placesto visit.

Airport arrivalsEdinburgh Interna�onal Airport is only 7 milesfrom the city centre, with the journey taking just25 minutes. There are a number of regulartransport services to the city centre:

• Airlink bus service – Operates every 10minutes during the day and every half hour atnight. A return �cket will cost around £7.50.You will find the bus stop just outside theairport terminal.

• Tram – A new and popular method to travel tothe city centre. Trams every 10 minutes eachway, taking 40 minutes to arrive centrally atPrinces Street. Return �ckets £8.50.

• Taxi hire – Taxis are available from directlyoutside the airport terminal. A single journeyto the city centre will cost around £30.

• Execu�ve airport transfer – Basil Paterson canorganise a transfer directly from Edinburghairport to your accommoda�on. This will cost£58 each way, per person.

Public transportThe city is further connected with an excellentpublic transport system.

Public transport available in Edinburgh:

• Buses – Connecting the city and its outskirtswith a vast network of routes. Lothian busessell weekly and monthly tickets which offerunlimited travel.

• Trains – The two main train stations,Waverley and Haymarket, link Edinburgh tocities and towns across the UK.

1. Defini�ons1.1 When the following words with capital le�ers are used in these Terms, this is what

they will mean:Booking: your booking for one of Our Courses;Courses: the language training courses adver�sed on Our website;Deposit: the sum of 300 GBP;Event Outside Our Control: is defined in clause 8.2;Fees: the fees payable by you in respect of your Booking;Terms: the terms and condi�ons set out below;We/Our/Us: Ins�ll Educa�on Limited (trading as “OISE”) a company registered inEngland and Wales under company number 01293463 and having its registeredoffice at 38 Binsey Lane, Oxford OX2 0EY, United Kingdom. 1.2 When We use the words “wri�ng” or “wri�en” in these Terms, this includes e­mailunless We say otherwise.

2. Bookings2.1 Bookings can be made by comple�ng and submi�ng the form on Our website

together with payment of your Deposit or the total Fees (as applicable, see clause3.1).

2.2 Please ensure that you read these Terms carefully, and check that the details ofyour Booking are complete and accurate, before you make your Booking. If youthink that there is a mistake, please contact Us to discuss. We will confirm anychanges in wri�ng to avoid any confusion between you and Us.

2.3 When you make a Booking with Us, this does not mean that We have accepted it.Our acceptance of the Booking will take place as described in clause 2.4. If We areunable to confirm your Booking, We will inform you of this.

2.4 These Terms will become binding on you and Us when we confirm your Booking inwri�ng to you, at which point a contract will come into existence between you andUs. We will assign a unique reference number to your Booking and inform you of itwhen We provide confirma�on. Please quote this number in all subsequentcorrespondence with Us rela�ng to your Booking.

3. Payment of Fees3.1 Where the Course is due to begin more than 4 weeks from the date of your

Booking, a Deposit is payable at the �me of making your Booking. Where the Courseis due to begin less than 4 weeks from the date of your Booking, the Fees must bepaid in full at the �me of your Booking.

3.2 When We confirm your Booking under clause 2.4, We will provide a statementshowing the balance of the Fees due to be paid, which should be se�led at leastfour weeks before the Course star�ng date. Please note that you will not be allowedto a�end any Course unless payment of the Fees has been made in full.

3.3 All Fees must be paid in Sterling (GBP). All bank charges are payable by you.3.4 All refunds due under these Terms will be paid to the person from whom payment

was originally taken, using the same method of payment as used by them.

4. Changes to Bookings4.1 If you wish to change your Booking by switching to another Course, you must

provide at least 10 days’ no�ce of such change to Us in wri�ng, otherwise you willbe expected to a�end the Course originally booked or cancel your Booking underclause 7.

4.2 Where you have given the appropriate no�ce under clause 4.1:(a) We will refund any difference between the cost of the original Booking and

your revised Booking on the last date of the Course towhich you have switched (whether or not you remain on the Coursefor its full dura�on); or

(b) You may be required to pay any difference between the cost of theoriginal Booking and your revised Booking at the �me of your request.

4.3 If you wish to take a holiday at any �me during the Course, you must give Us atleast two weeks’ no�ce in wri�ng. No refunds are payable in these circumstances.

4.4 We reserve the right to cancel a Course, or make changes to course arrangements,as a result of Events Outside Our Control. Clause 8 will apply in such circumstances.

5. Our liability to you5.1 Where We provide any assistance to you in making travel and accommoda�on

requirements, We do so only as an intermediary between you, travelorganisa�ons and host families. Unless and to the extent caused by Ournegligence, We will not be liable to you for any losses arising from any delays orfailures rela�ng to travel and accommoda�on arrangements. We will, however,use our reasonable endeavours to defend your interests and mediate on yourbehalf in the event of any breach of contract on the part of a travel organisa�onor host family.

5.2 If We fail to comply with these Terms, We are responsible for loss or damage yousuffer that is a foreseeable result of Our breach of the Terms or Our negligence,but We are not responsible for any loss or damage that is not foreseeable. Lossor damage is foreseeable if it is an obvious consequence of Our breach or if itwas an�cipated by you and Us at the �me we entered into this contract.

5.3 We do not exclude or limit in any way Our liability for death or personal injurycaused by Our negligence or the negligence of Our employees, agents orsubcontractors, or for any liability which cannot be excluded or limited by law.

6. IInsurance, accommoda�on, student visas, study permits and safeguarding 6.1 You are responsible for arranging your own travel and medical insurance (including

the costs of repatria�on in the case of illness or accident) and student visitor visa.6.2 If you are denied a student visitor visa and provide Us with a copy of the rejec�on

le�er on or before the first day of the Course, the We will refund all Fees paid.6.3 Accommoda�on will begin on the Sunday before the Course starts and will end

on the Saturday a�er the Course ends. If you have asked Us to arrange host familyaccommoda�on, you will receive details of your host family address at least fivedays before the Course star�ng date (unless you have made a late Booking) toenable you to inform the host family of your approximate �me of arrival.

6.4 Basil Paterson Edinburgh operates a child protec�on and safeguarding policy inrela�on to care of our 16/17­year­old students. Full policies can be found on ourwebsite.

7. Your rights to cancel and applicable refund7.1 You have the following rights to cancel your Booking:

(a) you have a legal right to cancel your Booking within 14 calendar days of thedate of your Booking, in which event We will, subject to clause 7.3, refundall of the Fees including the Deposit; or

(b) you may cancel your Booking at any �me a�er the period of 14 days referred toin clause 7.1(a) but before the Course has begun, in which event We will retainthe Deposit and refund the balance of any Fees paid by you.

7.2 To exercise your rights to cancel under clause 7.1, you must inform Us of yourdecision by making a clear statement to this effect by comple�ng the cancella�onform on Our website or by contac�ng Us (see contact details below).

7.3 The law requires us to obtain your express consent to Us providing Our serviceswhere the star�ng date of the Course falls during the 14 day cancella�on periodreferred to in clause 7.1(a). By making your Booking, you will be treated as givingthis consent. You acknowledge that if you subsequently cancel, We will be en�tledto deduct an amount from the Fees paid which is in propor�on to the services thatwe have performed up to the date of your cancella�on.

7.4 Once a Course has begun, you may cancel your Booking with immediate effect bygiving Us wri�en no�ce if:(a) We break this contract in any material way and We do not correct or fix the

situa�on within 30 days of you asking Us to in wri�ng;(b) We go into liquida�on or a receiver or an administrator is appointed over

Our assets; or(c) We are affected by an Event Outside Our Control.

8. Our rights to cancel and applicable refund8.1 We will not be liable or responsible for any failure to perform, or delay in

performance of, any of Our obliga�ons under these Terms that is caused by anEvent Outside Our Control.

8.2 An Event Outside Our Control means any act or event beyond Our reasonablecontrol including but not limited to strikes or other industrial ac�on, civilcommo�on, terrorist a�ack or threat of terrorist a�ack, epidemic, adverse weathercondi�ons or other natural disasters.

8.3 If an Event Outside Our Control takes place that affects the performance of Ourobliga�ons under these Terms:(a) We will contact you as soon as reasonably possible to no�fy you; and(b) We will, where possible, propose alterna�ve arrangements (which may

include alterna�ve dates or venues) for the Course.8.4 You may cancel your Booking if any alterna�ve arrangements proposed by Us are

unsuitable for any reason, in which case We will refund all Fees paid in advance forthe Course.

8.5 We reserve the right to refuse your a�endance on the course if you are sufferingfrom any illness, medical condi�on or mental or physical disability which was notdisclosed at the �me of Booking.

9. How we may use your personal informa�on9.1 We will use the personal informa�on (including sensi�ve informa�on about your

health, religious beliefs and prac�ces or dietary requirements) that you provideto Us:(a) to administer and provide Our Courses to you;(b) to process payment in rela�on to any Booking;(c) for internal training and monitoring purposes; and(d) to inform you about similar Courses and other services that We provide,

but you may stop receiving these at any �me by contac�ng Us.9.2 We will not give your personal data to any third party other than:

(a) as strictly necessary for Us to perform Our contract with you;(b) to host families; or(c) to the schools and offices within our group companies (which means our

subsidiaries, our ul�mate holding company and its subsidiaries, as definedin sec�on 1159 of the UK Companies Act 2006) including those outside theEuropean Union.

9.3 You have the right to access informa�on held about you. Your right of access canbe exercised in accordance with the Data Protec�on Act 1998. Any access requestmay be subject to a fee of £10 to meet Our costs in providing you with details of theinforma�on We hold about you.

9.4 We may wish to use photographs and audio visual media containing your image orlikeness in our marke�ng and promo�onal materials and you hereby consent thatWe may do so in all and any media for such purposes. If you would prefer that Wedo not, you should no�fy Us in wri�ng. We will also confirm this with you where wehave a reasonable opportunity to do so. Copyright in any photographs or audiovisual media con�nuing your image or likeness shall belong to Us and shall noten�tle you to receive any royal�es or other payments.

10. Other important terms10.1 These Terms set out the en�re agreement between you and Us rela�ng to your

Booking.10.2 We may transfer Our rights and obliga�ons under these Terms to another

organisa�on, and We will always no�fy you in wri�ng if this happens, but this willnot affect your rights or Our obliga�ons under these Terms.

10.3 This contract is between you and Us. No other person shall have any rights toenforce any of its terms.

10.4 Each of the clauses in these Terms operates separately. If any court or relevantauthority decides that any of them are unlawful, the remaining paragraphs willremain in full force and effect.

10.5 If We fail to insist that you perform any of your obliga�ons under these Terms, or ifWe do not enforce Our rights against you, or if We delay in doing so, that will notmean that We have waived Our rights against you and will not mean that you donot have to comply with those obliga�ons. If We do waive a default by you, We willonly do so in wri�ng, and that will not mean that We will automa�cally waive anylater default by you.

10.6 These Terms are governed by Sco�sh law. You and We both agree to submit to thenon­exclusive jurisdic�on of the Sco�sh courts.
