B10d EvaluationSignificant Change in the New European Machinery Directive
The European standard EN 954-1 for the functional evaluation of safety-related parts of control systems will inevi-
tably be replaced by the international standard EN ISO 13849-1:2006. This standard is specifically suitable for more
advanced technologies commonly used today in machine-control applications and safety products.
Be prepared for this important change early enough, because the
• deadline for the mandatory application of EN ISO 13849-1:2006 is coming soon.
• acceptance of your products is enhanced in a fast changing and competitive market
• evaluation test according to EN ISO 13849-1:2006 can take well over several months.
We support you to keep pace in this time of change with our specialized know-how on the field of testing switches,
relays, contactors and other electrical components. Our laboratory is specially developed for the B10d evaluation
service. By working with us you can save time and avoid additional investments in building up your own testing
laboratory.
As test result we issue a qualified test report. Above that we offer our testing and certification services according to
the relevant IEC/EN safety standards, and if requested we will be glad to grant you our world-wide well accepted
component safety marks and certificates. (DIN Mark, TÜV Rheinland Bauart, CB, ENEC)
Our Services
Our laboratory offers you a broad range of B10d tests that can either be specially tailored to your requirements or we
can use our already operating test appliance. Below you will find an example for a relay endurance test.
In this table you can find an
example for different possible
combinations of concurrently
tested relay contacts. The number
of relays means how many re-
lays can concurrently be tested.
When testing with AC current
at 230V (AC-15, 230 V), the
test current can be set to cer-
tain discrete values, while when
testing with DC current at 24V
(DC-13, 24V) it can be adjusted
between 0,75A and 5A. The
duty factor depends on the test
parameters. These values are of
informative character only.
Short Summary about the Evaluation Method
EN ISO 13849-1:2006 introduces the performance levels from PL a (lowest) to PL e (highest) and is determined by:
• EN ISO 13849 categories (Cat B, Cat 1,….Cat 4)
• Diagnostic Coverage (DC)
• Mean Time To Dangerous Failure (MTTFd)
The first two parameters relate to the control system, meanwhile MTTFd stands for the quality and reliability of the
individual safety related components in this system.
MTTFd can be determined by appropriate testing methods. If T10
d means the time until 10% of the tested samples
fail to danger, then it can be estimated as follows:
B10d
stands for the number of cycles where 10% of the component fails to danger. Since nop
(number of cycles in one
year) is already defined by the planned application, MTTFd can easily be determined by the measured B
10d.value. The
test samples are concurrently tested under load.
