The Reichstag was built between 1884-1894 planned by Paul Wallot. Berlin became capital in 1871 after proclamation of the German empire. The new parliament needed a seat of government. Wallot added different styles like renaissance, baroque and classicism to give the building representative and monumental flair. The words „Dem Deutschen Volke“ were added in 1916. After the war the Reichstag was heavily destroyed. So it was not used for a long time. They had to blast the cupola because of static reasons in 1975. There was a first modification the same year. The architect Paul Baumgarten replaced some parts by glass. There was an second modification phase after 1994 which ended in the 19. April 1999 when there was the first meeting of the German Bundestag. The most eye-catching modification was the glass cupola.
