“Power Factor Corrected Battery Charger For Electric Vehicle” - A. Siva Prasad, K.
Deepa and K. Mathew; CIIT International Journal of Programmable Device Circuits and
Systems, Volume 4, No.13, August, 2012.
Power electronic circuits comprising of AC-DC converters and DC-DC converters
are Integral part of modern day electric vehicle. Batteries play a major role in an electric
vehicle. Thus the selection and implementation of battery charger using DC-DC converter
has important role in the development of electric vehicle. In addition to this, the existing
battery chargers are without power factor correction which will affect the life and
performance of the battery. So this paper presents a charging circuit for batteries used in
electric vehicle with the concept of power factor correction. This paper emphasizes the
necessity for a boost converter for the power factor correction. Half bridge converter
topology is implemented for battery charging purpose and it is simulated using MATLAB
software with rectifier and boost circuit for verifying the improvement in power factor
correction. The power factors and harmonic distortion obtained are presented and
analyzed in detailed.

Wind energy has huge potential to become major source of renewable energy for
the modern world. For integrating wind farms to the AC grid, HVDC transmission systems
have several advantages over AC transmission systems. This paper presents the design
and control of voltage source converter based HVDC system for integration of wind farms
in to AC grid. The designed VSC-HVDC system performance under steady state conditions
and various transient conditions are presented. The PSCAD/EMTDC software package is
used for the simulation studies.

“An Experimental Study on Flexural Behavior of Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete

International Journal of Emerging Trends in Engineering and Development, (IJETED),
ISSN 2249-6149, Issue 2, Vol.6, September, 2012.
This paper presents the attempt to utilize the industrial by-products and
construction & demolition waste in the synthesis of geopolymer concrete. The industrial
by-products comprising of flyash and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace slag (GGBS) were
geopolymerised by sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide (NAOH) solution. Recycled
aggregate completely replaced the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) aggregate in the
geopolymer concrete. As the compressive strength was found to increase with the
increase in NAOH molarity, an optimum molarity of 12M was adopted. Experimental
investigations showed that the inclusion of GGBS in the binder material increased the
compressive strength by 10%. The effect variation of binder percentage on workability,
compressive strength, flexural strength and split tensile strength were analysed. Most
promising results were obtained when the binder content (fly ash + GGBS) were 27% of
the total solid constituent of the geopolymer concrete mix using recycled aggregate.
Results of compression test showed a decrease in strength of about 10% compare to
ordinary Portland cement (OPC) aggregate. Adopting 27% of the binder content with 12M
NAOH molarity beams were casted and tested for the load deflection behaviour, ultimate
load and crackwidth.

“Antimicrobial Screening of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) Complexes with Nitrogen and
Oxygen Containing Schiff Base” - Amrita Thakur; Oriental Journal of Chemistry
Volume. 28, No. (2), September, 2012.
This study reports the preparation and spectroscopic evaluation of a series of
transition metal complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) with schiff base ligand 1-ethyl, 1, 2,
3, 5, tetrahydroimidazo (2, 1-b) quinazolin 5-one semicarbazone (ETQS). The ligand and
its Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes were formulated by elemental analysis, molar mass,
infrared spectra, electronic spectra, molar conductivity and magnetic susceptibility
measurements. In the light of above studies it is proposed that the compound ETQS
behaves as bidentate ligand and coordination takes place through azomethine nitrogen
and carbonyl oxygen of semicarbazone moiety. The remaining positions of metal ions are
satisfied by negative ions such as Cl-, Br-, I- and NO3 . The complexes were proposed
octahedral geometry. All the synthesized ligand and complexes have been screened for
antimicrobial activity.
