The week started with the running of the 3000m on Monday and the 1500m on Wednesday, with high participation in both events. Spirit day on Tuesday was fun and colourful with students dressed in house colours/themes and the traditional skits performed. The field events were held mid- day Thursday, with a strong competitive spirit across the houses. The stage was now set for the track and standard events at Friday’s Carnival. The day started with a quick assembly and it was straight down to competition in the first standard events. Throughout the day, Macquarie and Banks led the charge with their enthusiasm, passion and support for team-mates with Macquarie taking out the spirit stick. Banks started the day with a five point lead and tussled with Cook throughout the day but it was Cook who took a stranglehold on first position mid-way through the day. Macquarie battled hard for third place with Phillip falling away from the pack as the lead at the top grew greater. Cook’s dominance was evident again, winning for the ninth straight year. Banks maintained second place with Macquarie in third place and Phillip in fourth place. The final scores were Cook - 2286, Banks - 2102, Macquarie - 2049, Phillip - 1946. The Ayr High Footrace, a handicapped (staggered start) 100 metre sprint, was run again this year. A female and male race were run, containing the fastest 100m sprinters from all six age-groups (U12-U19). Mareeka Campbell and Brent Barnett (both U14’s) were winners of the race, claiming $50 each. It was a great spectacle with all remaining students and staff lining the side of the track to cheer and support the runners in the final event of the day. There were eleven records broken over the carnival. Congratulations to the following students - Dylan Meinicke (U12 400m, 800m, 200m), Jack Gimson (U12 Javelin), Cameron Wellington (U12 Triple Jump, High Jump), Demi Tudehope (U12 200m) and Helena Cason (U14 Shot Put, Discus). Congratulations must go to the age champions who delivered outstanding performances, particularly Dylan Meinicke (U12) who won the “Individual Athletics Champion” trophy which recognizes the highest points scorer of the Carnival. Dylan finished with 148 points. Special mention to Emma Donovan (U14), who finished second overall with 124 points, and Giselle Le Feuvre (U13) and Sharni Wight (U19) finishing with an impressive 120 points. Ayr High Human Powered Vehicle Team

by Mr Jamie Vacher, HPV Co-ordinator

During Term 2, students from Year 10 and 11 have been busy training, hoping to be part of Ayr High’s team that

travels 1000 km to Maryborough to compete in the 24 hour Technology Challenge, which is an event where eight riders

and two support crew race 140 other purpose built recumbent bikes from all over the state. The race begins midday Saturday 9 September and ends midday Sunday 10 September. Last year, both teams travelled over 500 km in the 24 hours and finished in the top third of teams. The junior team also won an award for best presented vehicle and team. The senior boys team this year consists of Dion Papadimitriou, Kai Northwood, Riley Horan, Kade Harch, Reece Heuir, Darcy Horan, Daniel Ballin, Daniel Huckett, Justin Marchesini and Ethan Bell. The senior mixed team includes Sam Green, Keagan Flynn, Ky Whittred, Breanna Rummeny, Chloe Stephens, Chloe Rehbein, Aletheia Pacey, Shannen Wood, Franka Hicks and Mackenzie Holmes.Congratulations to Maree Mulcahy, who was the winner of the money tree raffle. Thank you to everyone who supported the raffle. Funds raised will help our teams get to the Challenge.

Welcome back to Term 3! Term 3 has started off with a real

bang. In the first week we celebrated NAIDOC week at Ayr High which saw a touch carnival run throughout the week, activities and information about Australian Indigenous culture on each day. Thursday was our celebration day which started with an assembly in the morning. At the assembly, Diamond Heron, Indigenous Vice-Captain, did a welcome to country which included a smoking ceremony performed by the Gudjuda Rangers. This was followed by an absolutely fantastic display of traditional dancing with three student groups performing. We had a girl’s South Sea Islander dance troupe, followed by a boy and girl Torres Strait Islander dance troupe and to finish was the boys Aboriginal Dance group. It was a truly inspiring presentation of our indigenous students proudly showcasing their indigenous culture and heritage.Following the assembly, the Indigenous studies class ran activities showcasing Australian Indigenous cultures for our Year 7 students. The students had a great time and participated in all the activities. This was followed by traditional foods being offered at first and second breaks. Fried scones, damper and Kup Murri chicken, pork and vegetables were all on the menu and were delicious.

A big thank you goes out to all our staff who were involved, the Indigenous studies students, all the performers and all community members who came to support our NAIDOC celebrations.Week 2 was dominated by our Athletics Carnival with long distance running events happening at lunch times throughout the week, Spirit Day on Tuesday and Field Events on Thursday afternoon and the major event on Friday. The participation was very high by all houses, which is fantastic to see. Congratulations to the winning house Cook, along with Macquarie for winning the Spirit Stick. Well done to all competitors, students and staff. It was a great week.Whilst all of these extra-curricular events have been happening we haven’t lost sight of our main purpose of delivering the curriculum in the classrooms. Semester 1 report cards were issued on Monday 24 July with Parent/Carer/Student/Teacher interviews to take place on Monday 31 July from 3.30 - 6.30 pm. Information about how to and when bookings will become open was issued with the report cards and on our Facebook page. I would encourage all parent/carers to attend and to also bring along their sons and daughters to allow them to participate in the process as well.Coming up on Sunday 6 August we will be holding a Parent/Carer

Information and Open morning for all prospective students and their parents and carers. The morning will run from 9.00 - 11.30 am. We will be asking some of our students to help showcase the school by performing/demonstrating some of the fantastic activities that they are involved in at school. A letter will be coming home with any of the students who will be chosen or volunteer to help showcase our great school. Yours in education

Naidoc Weekby Diamond Heron, Indigenous

Vice Captain

This year the school ran Naidoc Week from 10 - 15 July. The

Indigenous Studies class hosted activities for the whole school in both lunches throughout the week. The Year 11 and 12 Indigenous students did the Juru Walk down at Plantation Park with a few of the Gudjuda Rangers. The walk provided insight into local significant sites and bush tucker. The Rangers also contributed to our school Naidoc Day by doing a smoking ceremony at our whole school assembly. The Indigenous Studies class also ran an Interhouse Touch Carnival starting Tuesday and hosted a final, versing the Indigenous All Stars on the Friday, to culminate the week. As part of the touch games, there were Under 15 teams and Open teams from each sporting house. The final winners were the Under 15 Indigenous All Stars and the Opens saw a tie between Banks house and the Indigenous All Stars. The Naidoc Day celebration was on Thursday 13 July where we had traditional dancing (Hula Dancers, Aboriginal Dancers and Torres Strait Islanders Dancers) which involved lots of students and community. There were Year 7 activities run over two sessions and then for lunch we had a traditional Kup Murri of pork and vegetables and rice. To end the day we had a relaxing game of trivia and prizes. The whole Naidoc week was a successful celebration of culture and understanding and heaps of fun for everyone involved.

CareersWow, it is been a busy Term 2 and 3 in regards to careers. At Ayr State High school we have had a number of career events happening. These include:• Year 10 Careers Day • Apprenticeship Readiness Evening• James Cook University (JCU) ExperienceWe have many more exciting events coming up during the remainder of Term 3, including: • Year 10 Career Pathways Meet/Interviews • Year 11/12 JCU Visit• Year 10 SET planning Meetings/Interviews • Year 10 into 11 Subject Selection Information Evening• Year 12 Pathway Lessons • Year 12 QTAC Parent Information Evening

Careers DayOn Friday 16 June 2017, Ayr State High School and Home Hill State High School came together for their annual Careers Day. The Careers Day is the culminating activity for the Year 10 Careers Programs at both schools. Throughout the program, students have been getting to know themselves better and investigating the range of options available for them when they finish school. The purpose of the program is to give students well rounded information to inform their subject selections for their senior years starting in 2018. On the day we had over 50 speakers from local businesses, education centres and beyond. A vast array of local employers were on hand to guide the students and answer all questions about getting into their specialised industry. The Burdekin Shire’s Mayor, Councillor Lyn McLaughlin, opened the day with a keynote presentation on the range of careers available within the Burdekin Shire Council. She also gave some interesting insight into the changes that she has made throughout her career, and how she came to be the Mayor of the Burdekin Shire today. It was great to see all 90 students engaged throughout the day whilst participating in discussions with employees from local business. Travis Richards, SunWater, also gave a very insightful and engaging keynote presentation about his career journey. From not achieving quite what he’d hoped for initially, to maintaining a good attitude and determination to get where he is today, as an Engineer and Manager of SunWater.

From the Guidance Office…(Continued)

Apprenticeship Readiness EveningOn Wednesday, 21 June 2017 Ayr State High School ran its inaugural Apprenticeship Readiness Evening. Despite being on State of Origin night, we had approximately 60 parents/carers and students attend. Next year we plan to hold the event at a larger venue due to its popularity. On the night, parents/carers and students heard from five companies about the apprenticeship recruitment process. They also had an opportunity to engage with aptitude and dexterity tests. Parents/Carers and students reported that the night was extremely helpful and informative. There were some key points and common themes in each presentation for students to keep in mind. In case you missed it, here they are:• Try to complete a range of work experience with different companies • Practise your interview skills as much as possible; many large companies have panel interviews which can be daunting • If you are applying for a technical trade, keep a portfolio of your work with photos of projects that you have been working

on• Put aside a couple of hours to complete your application, unfinished applications will be automatically rejected • Make sure you have met all of the prerequisites for the job, eg you need Maths B to be an electrician• Employers look at all aspects of your report cards including behaviour and effort comments as well as your attendance • Discuss your ability to work as part of a team. You may be required to work in a team during the recruitment process • There are large numbers of applications for a very limited number of jobs• You may be required to work at locations that aren’t in the Burdekin and will need to have your own transport• You need to be able to talk about why you applied for the job or why you are interested in the job. ‘Because mum told me

to apply’ is not an answer that will get you through • Most jobs will be advertised between June and August on Seek and in the local paper• Have an adult proofread your resume and cover letter to avoid mistakes.

James Cook University ExperienceOn Tuesday 11 July, thirty of our University bound students travelled to Townsville for the James Cook University Experience 2017. It was a fabulous day where students had a chance to experience university life for a day. The program included two lectures of the student’s choice according to their career goals. Students also had a choice of three breakout sessions including: • Balancing the Budget - How to afford University - Tips and Tricks for living away

from home• Top Tips for Application Based Programs• Accommodation Tour. All of the students agreed that the day was very informative with many students coming away confident in their career choices.

Parenting after Divorce and Separation

Separation and divorce can be a stressful and challenging time

for parents and children. It can put children at risk for emotional and behavioural problems, poor academic achievement, and ongoing relationship problems. Parents also may also experience increased depression, anxiety and stress. It is important that families have access to evidence-based preventative interventions. Researchers at the University of South Australia and The University of Queensland are developing an online intervention to support parents during this transition. They are encouraging parents to have an input into what is important to go in the program and what their needs are.Interested parents can learn more about the study and complete a brief online survey at https://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/pads.
