Executive Directorletter from the

Welcome to the 28th season of The Richmond Forum! We’re excited to have you with us for what promises to be another very engaging season.

Last April, just two days after we announced tonight’s program topic, two bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon. When the perpetrators were revealed to be two Muslim brothers, the very nature of Islam once again became the focus of an ongoing debate in America. The question we ask tonight reflects the core of this debate: Is Islam a religion of violence or peace?

For most Americans, our knowledge of Islam is far more likely to come from global headlines than from direct interaction with practicing Muslims in our own community. (Muslims make up about 24% of the world’s population, but comprise only about 1% of the U.S. population.) Additionally, while most of us understand that fanaticism can be found at the extremes of any faith system, we continue to ask if something inherent in Islam makes it more susceptible to these extremes and to the headline-grabbing acts of violence and terror committed in the name of the world’s second-largest religion.

Some minds are already made up. A few of our subscribers donated their tickets back tonight because they “already know the answer” to our question. But overwhelmingly, genuine interest in tonight’s topic has been extremely high, and you have expressed your appreciation for the opportunity to learn more about Islam.

Many of you read our panelists’ books over the summer. Some of you got together in groups to discuss them. Some of you even dropped by our office to discuss them with us. All of this is really wonderful.

In addition, we recently reviewed a large number of essays written by high school juniors from around the region. These students were asked to write about the 2013-2014 Richmond Forum program that most interested them; easily two-thirds of those essays were written about tonight’s program.

As is our practice, tonight’s discussion is global in nature. Our panelists’ experiences span the globe, from Somalia to Saudi Arabia to Ethiopia to Great Britain to Pakistan to Egypt to the United States. But how does what we will hear tonight relate to the Muslim communities right here in Richmond? On Thursday night, WCVE TV will broadcast tonight’s program at 9:00 PM, followed by a locally-focused discussion (at about 10:40 PM) with Imam Ammar Ammonette of the Islamic Center of Virginia. He will be joined by two other leaders of Richmond’s interfaith community, Rabbi Ben Romer of Congregation Or Ami, and the Reverend Dr. Bill Sachs of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and the Center for Interfaith Reconciliation. We look forward to that dialogue and hope that you will tune in or set your DVR.

Thanks, as always, for your support of The Richmond Forum.

In 2004, she gained international attention following the murder of Theo van Gogh, director of Submission, Ali’s film about the oppression of women under Islam. The assassin, a radical Muslim, left a death threat for her pinned to van Gogh’s chest.

In 2006, allegations that she had falsified her asylum application led to her resignation from Parliament and ultimately to her taking refuge in the United States, where she recently became a citizen.

In 2007, she established the AHA Foundation to help protect and defend the rights of women in the West against fundamentalist Islam.

Today, Ali also serves as a fellow with the Future of Diplomacy Project at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School and is a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, researching the relationship between the West and Islam.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali was named one of TIME Magazine’s “100 most influential people” of 2005 and is the author of The Caged Virgin and two bestselling memoirs, Infidel and Nomad.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a former Muslim, has gained an international following speaking and writing about what she believes to be the inherently violent nature of Islam and its subjugation and abuse of women.

Ali was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1969. The daughter of a political opponent of the Somali dictatorship, she grew up in exile, moving from Saudi Arabia to Ethiopia to Kenya. She embraced Islam and strove to live as a devout Muslim, but over time she began to question aspects of her faith. One day, while listening to a sermon on the many ways women should be obedient to their husbands, she couldn’t resist asking, “Must our husbands obey us too?”

In 1992, Ayaan was married off by her father to a distant cousin who lived in Canada. In order to escape this marriage, she fled to the Netherlands, where she was given asylum and, in time, citizenship. She learned Dutch and studied at the University of Leiden. Working as a translator for Somali immigrants, she saw firsthand the inconsistencies between liberal Western society and tribal Muslim cultures.

After earning her M.A. in political science, Ayaan worked as a researcher for a Dutch Labor Party think tank and in 2003, she was elected to the Dutch parliament. While serving, she focused on furthering the integration of non-Western immigrants into Dutch society and defending the rights of Muslim women. She campaigned to raise awareness of violence against women, including honor killings and female genital mutilation (FGM), practices that had followed the immigrants into Holland. (Ali herself was subjected to FGM as a child.) In her three years in government, she found her voice as an advocate for an “enlightened Islam.”

Maajid Nawaz’s current work is informed by years spent in his youth as a leadership member of the global Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) and his gradual transformation towards liberal democratic values.

Believing he was working for the cause of Islam, Nawaz dedicated thirteen years of his life to spreading an ideology that rejected democracy as apostasy and called for military coups in Muslim-majority countries in order to create a single expansionist caliphate, or Islamic state. Eventually, he was arrested in Egypt and sentenced to four years in jail for belonging to HT, which is banned in several countries.

It was this time in jail—spent in reflection, study, and debate—which marked the beginning of his fundamental change. After gaining fluency in Arabic and actually studying Islam from its original sources, Nawaz came to realize how wrong his message had been. He also had the benefit of spending hours in prison debating his ideas with a variety of Muslim minds, including some of the world’s first-known “jihadis” (people such as the assassins of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat) who had since renounced their extremist ideology and urged Nawaz to do the same. The more time that passed, the more convinced he became that extremism has no place in Islam and that the totalitarian ideology he had helped spread had hijacked the Islamic faith.

Nawaz is now a leading critic of his former Islamist ideological dogma, while remaining a Muslim. He told the story of his radicalization and return in Radical, which Tony Blair called a book that “should be read by anyone who wants to understand how the extremism that stalks our world is created and how it can be overcome.”

Nawaz is the co-founder and chairman of Quilliam, a globally active think tank focusing on matters of integration, citizenship and identity, religious freedom, extremism, and immigration. He is also the founder of Khudi, a Pakistan-based social movement campaigning to entrench democratic culture among the nation’s youth.

He has been profiled on 60 Minutes, spoken at the TED conference, and is a frequent panelist on AC360 on CNN. His essays have appeared in The London Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, and many other publications.

As a British-Pakistani, Nawaz speaks English, Arabic, and Urdu, and holds a B.A. in Arabic and Law from SOAS, University of London, and a Masters in Political Theory from the London School of Economics.

Nawaz lives in London and is a proud father to his young son. He is engaged to marry an American he met during a previous visit to the United States.

He is currently running as a Liberal Democratic party candidate for a seat in Parliament.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is an American Muslim spiritual leader, acclaimed author, influential Muslim voice of moderation, and a proponent of the belief that Islam is a bedrock of tolerance.

Rauf is the founder and chairman of the Cordoba Initiative, a multi-national, multi-faith organization dedicated to improving Muslim-West relations; countering Islamaphobia; elevating the discourse in America on Muslims while showing that Islam is pluralist, tolerant, and compassionate; and creating a space for the voices of moderation to flourish and be heard. In 1997, he also co-founded the American Society for Muslim Advancement.

Imam Rauf is a regular speaker at the Council of Foreign Relations and the World Economic Forum (Davos) and is often consulted by heads of state for his expertise and innovative solutions in areas where conflict between Islamic and Western communities undermines local and global security.

He is the author of five books, including What’s Right with Islam Is What’s Right with America and Moving the Mountain: A New Vision of Islam in America, as well as many scholarly articles, such as “Justification & Theory of Sharia Law: How the American Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and Constitution Are Consistent with Islamic Jurisprudence.”

Imam Rauf was listed as one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers of 2010 by Foreign Policy Magazine, and TIME Magazine included him on its list of the “100 most influential people in the world” in 2011. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including Arianna Huffington’s 2010 Game Changer Award and the 2012 Common Ground Award. Along with his wife, Daisy Khan, Rauf received the Eleanor Roosevelt

Human Rights Award presented by the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee in 2011.

As the longtime imam of Masjid al-Farah, a mosque located in Lower Manhattan, Rauf preached a message of understanding between people of all faith traditions and, in 2009, first came to widespread national attention as the proponent of a controversial Islamic cultural center to be located two blocks from Ground Zero in New York City.

Imam Rauf sits on the Board of Trustees of the Islamic Center of New York, serves as an advisor to the Interfaith Center of New York, and is a member of the World Economic Forum Council of 100 Leaders.

He has appeared regularly on BBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, Fox News, Frontline, and in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, The Daily Beast, and Foreign Policy.

Born in Kuwait to Egyptian parents, Rauf was educated in England, Egypt, and Malaysia, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Columbia University in New York and a Master of Science in Plasma Physics from Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey.

How apropos that tonight’s conversation about Islam takes place in the grand theater formerly known as the Mosque. (Known today as the Landmark Theater, and soon to be re-named the Altria Theater.)

Built in 1926 as a home for gatherings of ACCA Temple members, commonly known as Shriners, the building was modeled after a lavish mosque. It remains the

largest and most elaborate theater ever built in Richmond and one of the largest theaters on the East Coast. The Laurel Street entrance is topped by a tall arch and bracketed by twin minarets, and dome-topped towers mark the north and south corners. For the inside decor, tile was imported from Spain, Italy, and Tunis, along with lush carpets and silken curtains. Reportedly, 75,000 square feet of gold leaf and 35,000 square feet of aluminum leaf were used to clad the

theater’s massive dome. Above the stage proscenium and throughout the building, murals depict Saracenic scenes.

Since we last met here in April, much work has taken place to restore this theater, the longtime home of The Richmond Forum, to its former glory and upgrade it to the needs of the 21st century.

Major improvements completed this summer include:New restrooms on the Ballroom, 2nd floor, and 3rd floor levels•Refinished and reupholstered seating on the Orchestra level•New lounges on the 3rd floor•ADA enhancements on the Orchestra level•New stage floor•All new HVAC, plumbing, and electrical•New water main to correct water pressure issues•New fire alarm system•

Ongoing work during this season:Remodeling of Lounges A and C on the 2nd floor level•Work on two new passenger elevators•New Laurel Street marquee•New and expanded box office with self-service kiosks and concierge•

Work to be completed next summer (2014):Refinish and reupholster seats in Grand Tier and Upper Balcony•New Main Street marquee•New stage lighting and sound system•New Ballroom level full-service kitchen•

The City of Richmond, Altria, Dominion, and a host of private donors are investing a total of $60 million in funding and tax credits in the theater’s renovation.

Glossary of Terms

caliph - From Arabic, khalifatu rasul Allah, literally “successor of the Messenger of God.” The term used by Muslims to designate their early political leaders.

din - Religion, law. Islam is a din that is made up of three dimensions: submission, faith and virtue.

fatwa - A legal opinion given by a mufti (The Muslim adaptation of the Roman prudent) in accordance with Islamic law. A mufti or muftiyyah issues legal opinions, and teaches what is Islamically right or wrong to his or her constituency.

Hadith - Literally, “happening” or “news.” A hadith is a report of something the Prophet said or did.

hajj - “Pilgrimage.” One of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims who are physically and financially able are obliged to make pilgrimage to the Kaaba, a cube-shaped temple devoted to God, located in the city of Mecca in what is today Saudi Arabia. Muslims believe that this temple was built by Abraham.

halal - “Permissible,” the opposite of haraam, “forbidden,” and referring to actions permitted or forbidden by God. All actions that are not haraam are de facto halal.

hijab - Literally, “veil.” Commonly used to describe the head coverings or headscarves that many Muslim women wear.

imam - The person who leads the Muslim congregational prayer. Among Sunnis, the term Imam has been used historically to refer to notable religious scholars or founders of the Sunni schools of jurisprudence. Among Shias, the term is additionally used to refer to their twelve most important political leaders starting with Imam Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet.

Quran - Literally, “the recitation,” the scripture of Muslims. Muslims accept the Quran as the word of God, authored by God and revealed to the Prophet Mohammad over a period of twenty-three years. the Quran is distinquished from the Hadith, which are the prophets own words.

Shariah - From the word shar’, which means “ordinance,” referring to God’s ordinances, defined as the approximately 500 Quranic commandments and 1,200 prophetic commandments. The term is also loosely used by Muslims to refer generally to the entire corpus of Islamic law. The four sources of the law are the Quran, the Hadith, Consensus, and Reasoning by Analogy.

Shia, Sunni, Sufism

Shia - From Arabic, shi’atu ‘Ali, the partisans or disciples of Ali, who believe that the Prophet directly appointed his son-in-law Ali to be his successor, and that legitimate leadership of the community comes only through the direct blood-line of Ali. They are the non-Sunni Muslims who comprise 15 percent of the Muslim world, and live predominantly in the countries ringing the Persian Gulf such as Iran, Iraq, and Bahrain, but constitute important minorities in other countries such as the eastern region of Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Lebanon.

Sunni - From Arabic, ahl al-sunnah wa-l jama’a, “the people of tradition and the majority.”

The major non-Shia group of Muslims today, making up 85 percent of the Muslim world. They believe that the Prophet did not appoint a successor and that leadership of the community is to be decided by the community.

Sufism - The esoteric or inner tradition of Islam, shared by Sunnis and Shias, which focuses on spirituality, the refinement and awakening of the heart. People who enter a Sufi order (tariqa) are guided by a shaykh along this path of inner development through the prescription of litanies of divine remembrance (dhikr) handed down from the Prophet and Sufi masters and guides. The goal of the Sufi path is the “unveiling of God,” the experiential vision of His face.

The world’s Muslim population is expected to increase by about 35% in the next 20 years, rising from 1.6 billion in 2010 to 2.2 billion by 2030, according to population projections by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life.

Globally, the Muslim population is forecast to grow at about twice the rate of the non-Muslim population over the next two decades—an average annual growth rate of 1.5% for Muslims, compared with 0.7% for non-Muslims. If current trends continue, Muslims will make up 26.4% of the world’s total projected population of 8.3 billion in 2030, up from 23.4% of the estimated 2010 world population of 6.9 billion.

While the global Muslim population is expected to grow at a faster rate than the non-Muslim population, the Muslim population nevertheless is expected to grow at a slower pace in the next two decades than it did in the previous two decades. From 1990 to 2010, the global Muslim population increased at an average annual rate of 2.2%, compared with the projected rate of 1.5% for the period from 2010 to 2030.

If current trends continue, however, 79 countries will have a million or more Muslim inhabitants in 2030, up from 72 countries today. A majority of the world’s Muslims (about 60%) will continue to live in the Asia-Pacific region, while about 20% will live in the Middle East and North Africa, as is the case today. But Pakistan is expected to surpass Indonesia as the country with the single largest Muslim population. The portion of the

world’s Muslims living in sub-Saharan Africa is projected to rise; in 20 years, for example, more Muslims are likely to live in Nigeria than in Egypt. Muslims will remain relatively small minorities in Europe and the Americas, but they are expected to constitute a growing share of the total population in these regions.

In the United States, the population projections show the number of Muslims more than doubling over the next two decades, rising from 2.6 million in 2010 to 6.2 million in 2030, in large part because of immigration and higher-than-average fertility among Muslims. The Muslim share of the U.S. population (adults and children) is projected to grow from 0.8% in 2010 to 1.7% in 2030, making Muslims roughly as numerous as Jews or Episcopalians are in the United States today. Although several European countries will have substantially higher percentages of Muslims, the United States is projected to have a larger number of Muslims by 2030 than any European countries other than Russia and France.

In Europe as a whole, the Muslim share of the population is expected to grow by nearly one-third over the next 20 years, rising from 6% of the region’s inhabitants in 2010 to 8% in 2030. The greatest increases—driven primarily by continued migration—are likely to occur in Western and Northern Europe, where Muslims will be approaching double-digit percentages of the population in several countries. In the United Kingdom, for example, Muslims are expected to comprise 8.2% of the population in 2030, up from an estimated 4.6% today.

Muslims in the AmericasThe number of Muslims in Canada is

expected to nearly triple in the next 20 years, from about 940,000 in 2010 to nearly 2.7 million in 2030. Muslims are expected to make up 6.6% of Canada’s total population in 2030, up from 2.8% today. Argentina is expected to have the third-largest Muslim population in the Americas, after the U.S. and Canada. Argentina, with about 1 million

Muslims in 2010, is now in second place, behind the U.S.

Children under age 15 make up a relatively small portion of the U.S. Muslim population today. Only 13.1% of Muslims are in the 0-14 age group. This reflects the fact that a large proportion of Muslims in the U.S. are newer immigrants who arrived as adults. But by 2030, many of these immigrants are expected to start families. If current trends

continue, the number of U.S. Muslims under age 15 will more than triple, from fewer than 500,000 in 2010 to 1.8 million in 2030. The number of Muslim children ages 0-4 living in the U.S. is expected to increase from fewer than 200,000 in 2010 to more than 650,000 in 2030.

About two-thirds of the Muslims in the U.S. today (64.5%) are first-generation immigrants (foreign-born), while slightly

more than a third (35.5%) were born in the U.S. By 2030, however, more than four-in-ten of the Muslims in the U.S. (44.9%) are expected to be native-born.

The top countries of origin for Muslim immigrants to the U.S. in 2009 were Pakistan and Bangladesh. They are expected to remain the top countries of origin for Muslim immigrants to the U.S. in 2030.

Trinity Episcopal School advocates service to one’s community as an important aspect of individual character development and the creation of a strong community. These Trinity students, selected from the School’s Honor Roll, serve as pages for The Richmond

Angelo Minor

Tonight’s program is dedicatedto the memory of our friend

For 18 seasons, Angelo photographed every Richmond Forum program, working discreetly in the dark and professionally capturing hundreds of images of our speakers and our guests.

At the very end of each evening, Angelo would hand his camera to one of us, remind us where to look, what button to press, and the last photo of the evening would be taken—the one of our speaker and smiling Angelo.

We will miss that last photo, and our good friend.

You start by listening

In times like these, knowing where to start the conversation in helping to address complex issues is vital. So, there is a process to everything we do and it starts with listening and identifying the right questions. Knowing where to start and what to ask comes from experience and discipline of thought. This is just the beginning of what we provide to our clients.

We’re a network of firms in 158 countries with more than 180,000 people who are committed to delivering quality in assurance, tax and advisory services. Tell us what challenges you are facing or find out more by visiting us at www.pwc.com

In October, Weldon Bradshaw was told he had 7 days to live. He had a rare disease, PSC, that was shutting down his liver. He needed a miracle. What he got, was even better. A healthy liver. It became available thanks to VCU’s advances in expanding the adult donor pool. Now Weldon can worry about more important things - like havingdinner with his wife. Dan BuettnerThe Science of Happiness

January 25, 2014

Science shows that where we live—not education, marital status, or wealth—is the biggest, controllable factor that determines our happiness. Working with Gallup, The World Values Survey, and the World Database of Happiness, Dan Buettner has researched happiness hot spots around the globe—places where people report having the highest level of well-being or happiness—and identified the common denominators. In January, Buettner, an internationally recognized researcher, explorer, New York Times best-selling author, and National Geographic Fellow, will share what governments, communities, and individuals can do to stack the deck to maximize happiness.
