HUA HIN, THAILAND Last week we ran an article about how tourism may be changing the face of Hua Hin, specifically how the locals and tourists interaction may be negatively effected. Some readers have made it known that they don’t agree with the article, without contacting us directly, and the purpose of this week’s front page is to encourage readers to do so, whether they agree, disagree, don’t care or have something they feel is worth sharing or looking into. When we first launched AWOL in October 2008, we always intended to have a ‘Letters To The Editor’ section, and indeed for a short time we printed the section; however we did not receive enough letters or emails to continue with it. We are sure that there are plenty of you out there with something to say, so we plan to reintroduce a Letters section in the next couple of months. Anything sent to us does not have to be directly related to AWOL or any story we run, but we would have to reserve the right to edit anything we publish for either space or content considerations, without materially altering whatever is being put across. Decisions on whether to publish a reader’s letter will be at our discretion, but will be based largely on how interesting it is but also on whether we can print it without legal issues, as the libel laws in Thailand are very strict. We will not print the full name of the reader submitting the letter unless specifically requested. While we will be happy to receive letters through the post (see page 17 for our office address), the quickest, cheapest and easiest way is to send an email to: [email protected] GET RACING FROM ONLY 400 BAHT! TauruS apr 21 – May 21Conflicts at work and at home are

cleared up instantly this week when you decide that all women are basically just crazy bitches.

GEMini May 22 – June 21You are relived to find that,

although you’ve left the window open and pages are indeed being torn from the calendar, you’re not actually hurtling though time at a breakneck pace.

CanCEr Jun 22 – Jul 22Your life certainly isn’t working

out the way you had planned. Try to find some sort of equivalent of unplugging it and starting it over.

LEO Jul 23 – aug 22You’re pretty sure that if God had

really meant for man to fly, he would have given us all the ability to afford our own airplanes.

VirGO aug 23 – Sep 22The furious mobs will finally stop

burning your effigy next week, but only because they’ve decided to stop playing around with dolls and go to the source.

Libra Sep 23 – Oct 23You’ve always liked mysteries, so

you’ll enjoy the one the police tell you about your car being found 200 miles away with eight dead women in the boot.

SCOrpiO Oct 24 – nov 21The interesting thing about next

week isn’t the massive size of the lobsters or how pollution has affected their aggressiveness, but it’s closely related.

SaGiTTariuS nov 22 – Dec 21The bad news is your favourite

shirt will be stained beyond saving next week; the good news is your favourite tie will be untouched, which is miraculous when you think about how many times you’ll be shot.

CapriCOrn Dec 22 - Jan 19The problems of reconciling the

spiritual and material, or the intellectual and emotional, shall seem as nothing to you when compared with the problem of asking Erin out to the movies.

aquariuS Jan 20 – Feb 18They may be laughing at you now,

but they’ll have to stop eventually if only to eat, catch their breath, and get a good night’s sleep in preparation for laughing at you all day tomorrow.

piSCES Feb 19 – Mar 20Sometimes all you want is to relax

in your sweats with a movie and a bowl of popcorn, but this week you’ll want six units of whole blood, clean bandages, a splint, and plenty of morphine.

ariES Mar 21 - apr 20You’ve got a tough row to hoe in

front of you this week, which seems like merely a folksy euphemism until you find you’ve inherited a run-down potato farm.

This week it is..... a load of cobblersnonsense, rubbish. This is a classic of Cockney rhyming slang. it has nothing directly to do with shoemakers but originates from ‘cobblers’ awls’, the pointed hand-tools that cobblers use to pierce holes in leather. The rhyme is with ‘balls’, meaning testicles. The phrase is often reduced to simply ‘cobblers’, which is now considered an acceptable vulgarism, as many may not be aware of its origin. ‘Cobblers’ sounds as though it might have been said by cheeky Victorian barrow boys in Dickens or similar. in fact, it isn’t as old as it might sound and wasn’t used until the mid 20th century. The earliest example found in print, bearing in mind that it probably existed as street slang for some time before printed versions appeared, is from philip allingham’s Cheapjack, his account of life amongst English market traders and fairground stall-holders, which was published in 1934:

“The Cobbler is even more simple. It is a ball game..‘cobbler’ is the slang for ball.”

The first example of the full phrase ‘a load of cobblers’ that can be found is from the british popular music magazine Melody Maker, October 1968:

“Geno Washington says Grapefruit’s recent attack on the Maryland Club, Glasgow, was ‘a load of cobblers’. They are one of the best audiences in Britain, says Geno.”

pLanE CraShThere were two brits, Dave and John, whose plane crashed into a desert. Luckily they survived unharmed. as they travelled through the hot desert looking for food and water, they gave up and sat down, thinking of what to do.as the dust in the air settled, they spotted a mosque ahead. They became very hopeful. Dave said, “They might help us if they think we’re Muslims. i’m going to tell them my name is Mohammed.”but John said, “That’s ridiculous, i’m just going to tell them the truth.”They knocked on the door of the mosque, and were greeted by the imam. “What are your names?”Dave said, ‘My name is Mohammed’, and John said ‘and i’m John’.The imam said ‘hello John, you poor man. My men will get you food and drink immediately.’ Then the iman turned to Dave: “and Mohammed, happy ramadan!”

Do you like to cook?is cooking your hobby? is cooking a passion?

come and join us in our newHua Hin Hobby cooking Members group

The cooking sessions are once a month. Each member has a chance to host the group in their home and make dinner for them. There are no guidelines as far as what to cook, as long as the meal is homemade and they provide the recipes. Costs are shared and each member brings their

own drinks. My idea was to regularly gather people who have the same passion; cooking. As there are many nationalities it will be exciting to discover new food cultures and to share recipes. A cooking group is also a social event; cooking together is fun and is an opportunity to make new friends. You do not need to be a chef in order to join the group. Whatever your level of cooking is, most important is that you like cooking, are open to new ideas and are prepared to participate regularly at the members’ cooking sessions. If you are interested in receiving more information you

can email me at [email protected]

iT iS WhaT iT iS, iSn’T iT?imagine for a moment or two that you are a farang born in Thailand to English parents, and you have lived there ever since. Maybe your parents were missionaries - it doesn’t really matter how the situation came about. What matters is that you now have Thai citizenship. (This is after all fiction.) Your parents retained their Christian faith, and brought you up in that faith too. So although Thailand is your home, you went to school there, and speak the language fluently, you still retain the religious beliefs and cultural heritage instilled by your parents. You naturally feel a close connection with England, and keep in touch with extended family via social media, which also enabled you to make many friends over there. Some of those friends tell you that England is in a mess. not only is the Church of England a man made usurper of the true faith, but there is now a threat from the Church of Scotland and its’ followers, who have gained a huge presence at the very heart of british government.Your friends plan to rid England of these infidels, by overthrowing the Church and eliminating the Scottish insurgents. They will achieve this by destroying a few churches, along with a World heritage site - the palace of Westminster - a double whammy which will also deal with the threat from Scottish Mps. They tell you that the fall of Westminster will actually benefit English tax

payers by saving the billions it would have cost to repair the already crumbling building. if you agree to help them you will live a life of luxury in Englands’ newly green and pleasant land. What have you got to lose? Thailand is nice but you still feel a bit like an outcast there. You will never convert to buddhism, and the State won’t support you in your old age. You don’t believe what the bbC tells you about the situation in England - your friends know the truth, after all they live with it every day. So you decide to make the move for the greater good and the promise of a better life. Fiction of course, but if it were reality and you blew up a church or two, and helped to massacre hundreds of Mps, only to find that the dream of life in England had been a lie, would you expect to be able to flee back to Thailand?

This week’s word is ‘henge’. a pre-historic monument consisting of a circle of stone or wooden uprights, as in the world famous Stonehenge in Wiltshire. not to be outdone though Yorkshire now has a henge of it’s very own. recently discovered near hornsea, a coastal town not too far from hull, ‘hornsea henge’ sadly no longer has standing stones, just buried remains, so won’t be suitable for pagan festivals. Which will probably come as a huge relief to the local council.

Arsenal’s hopes of signing Colombia international Jackson Martinez, 28, are over after the Porto forward agreed a four-year deal with Atletico Madrid. (AS) Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, 61, says the club lacked ambition last season and that he would like to manage his native Chile before he retires. (El Mercurio) Newcastle United and Stoke City want 25-year-old Ukraine international winger Yevhen Konoplyanka, who is available on a free transfer after his contract at Dnipro expired. (Daily Mirror) West Bromwich Albion are prepared to make former Newcastle and Chelsea striker Demba Ba their highest-paid player, with the 30-year-old telling his current club Besiktas he wants to return to England rather than play in China for Shanghai Shenhua. (Birmingham Mail) Stoke City are expecting a formal bid from Chelsea for £8m-rated goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, 28, and will ask the Premier League champions to include Nigeria forward Victor Moses, 24, in any deal. (Daily Telegraph) West Ham United have agreed a £12m deal for Marseille midfielder Dimitri Payet, 28. (Daily Mail) Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino hopes to convince two of his most in-demand players to stay by making goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, 28, captain and appointing 21-year-old forward Harry Kane as vice-captain. (Daily Mirror) Chelsea’s Egypt winger Mohamed Salah, 23, is expected to tell Fiorentina whether he will stay with them for the 2015-16 campaign on Wednesday after spending the second half of last season on loan at the Italian club. (Daily Telegraph) Sunderland have made an offer in excess

of £11m for PSV Eindhoven’s 24-year-old midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, who is also a target for their north-east rivals Newcastle United. (Guardian) The arrival of Republic of Ireland international winger James McClean, 26, at West Bromwich Albion has split the club’s support. (Sun) Manchester City full-back Shay Facey, 20, is poised to extend his loan at New York City FC, the club midfielder Frank Lampard has joined after completing the season at the Etihad Stadium. (Manchester Evening News) Hull City’s £10m club record signing Abel Hernandez will only be allowed to leave the Championship club on a permanent deal after the Tigers ruled out loaning the Uruguay striker to another club. (Hull Daily Mail) Newcastle United are behind schedule in the transfer window compared to last season - despite a pledge from club owner Mike Ashley to spend big this summer. (Evening Chronicle) Former Arsenal keeper Bob Wilson, a double winner with the Gunners in 1971, says the proposed arrival of Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, 33, will give Wojciech Szczesny, 25, the perfect chance to improve himself by learning from Cech. (Sky Sports) Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett claims that 18-year-old forward Demarai Gray will make it to the very top of the game - but should only leave for the right club. (The Mirror) Bournemouth’s Wales international midfielder Shaun MacDonald, 27, has abandoned plans to leave on loan and is determined to fight for his place. (Bournemouth Daily Echo)

SWiTzErLanDFOUR in every five banknotes has been used for an illegal payment by FIFA, investigators have confirmed.Currencies from the euro to the dollar to the Angolan kwanza contain clear traces of FIFA’s sweaty fingers when illuminated under ultraviolet light. An FBI spokesman said: “Almost every note in your wallet has, at one time, been used in a multimillion dollar bribe between football federations, usually in squalid toilets.“When riffled through, the banknotes issue a whispering sound which, when amplified 100 times, says ‘It’s for the good of world football,’ and ‘they’re only opposing Qatar because they’re racist’.

Above: This wad of £10 notes was found by police investigating the FIFA corruption scandal

when searching Chuck Blazer’s home.

“The historical figures that appear on the notes, from Egypt’s Rameses II to the UK’s Adam Smith, have all begun to resemble Sepp Blatter’s distinctive, ‘bummed turtle’ countenance.“And, if left sealed in a vault, they will begin to move very gradually toward Switzerland as if going home.”The fear is that people could become contaminated by the notes, with children being especially at risk; indeed there have already been several school incidents involving the awarding of tuck shop concessions, with complaints about having to travel to schools over ten miles away in order to buy a sherbet dip.
