HUA HIN, THAILANDAWOL was contacted last week by a reader who was very disgruntled over the cost of the medicines he had been prescribed by one of the local private hospitals, and the reason for his unhappiness was that the drugs were up to ten times the price that they could be obtained for in a local pharmacy.This is not news to anyone who has been in Thailand for a long time, but there are still many people who are not aware that this is the case, and many who have no or insufficient insurance to foot the bill incurred.Insurance is something many expats eschew, particularly medical insurance, but there have been many cases in Hua Hin over the years where a medical bill has all but bankrupted people with many being forced to go back to their home country for further treatment or to try and pay off the debt. Given the average age of many foreigners that either live here permanently or for extended periods every year, the chances are that a high number are going to require hospitalisation at least once, and more likely several times as they get older, not just from getting ill but also from accidents.Several places in the area offer a variety of packages from different insurers that would be worth any expat looking into, and at least two of our current advertisers, Siam Consulting and the Observer, are licensed insurance brokers. Don’t wait until it is too late to buy insurance, and check your bill carefully before you pay it at the hospital - both could save you money in the long run, and allow your stay here to be longer and with greater peace of mind.

bOrN TO be WILDby roger NorwoodA report in the bangkok Post this week on the Kui buri National Park, about an hour south of Hua Hin, made interesting reading as it revealed that the park is still closed while an investigation continues into the discovery of 18 mysterious deaths of gaurs (Indian bison) in December last year.The article hints at this being part of a political process to grab the lion’s share of the lucrative safari business that has been thriving at the park, currently carried out by the local people who have been instrumental in making the park what it is today.The locals are extremely frustrated at how long the investigation by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation

(DNP) is taking, and have raised by themselves 100,000 baht reward money for anyone who helps catch those responsible for the death of the gaurs. Another factor in this issue is the proposal by the DNP that the Park be turned into a Unesco World Heritage site and, if approved, this would mean a substantial increase in budget allocation. Interestingly, the previous Kui buri National Park chief was recently relocated, much to the locals displeasure.Theerapat Prayurasiddhi, deputy secretary general of the DNP has dismissed the villagers ‘conspiracy theories’ and his office has said that the park will be reopened as soon as the case of the dead animals is cleared.

The park offers another tourist string to the bow of the Hua Hin area, and given its unique nature it would be a great shame if the model of the so-called “local villagers-inclusive conservation” is denied exposure by a long closure. by all accounts the park is absolutely stunning, with large herds of elephants to be seen grazing, along with a huge variety of other wildlife including the aforementioned gaurs as well as tigers, and a unique to Thailand 12,000 rai grass prairie, which is a designated food zone for the wild animals.

This week it is..... Women and children firstThe seafaring command that women and children be the first to board the lifeboats when a ship abandoned.HMS birkenhead sank off the coast of South Africa on 26th February 1852. This incident is widely believed to be the origin of the phrase women and children first. The ship was carrying 480 british troops and about 26 women and children. When the ship foundered the soldiers’ commander Colonel Seton told them to ‘Stand fast!’ and allow the women and children to make use of the few lifeboats. Most of the soldiers and sailors on board were drowned or eaten by sharks, but all the women and children survived. The women and children first ethos was later called the ‘birkenhead Drill’ and was celebrated in verse by rudyard Kipling in his moral boosting work Soldier an’ Sailor Too:To take your chance in the thick of a rush, with firing all about,Is nothing so bad when you’ve cover to ‘and, an’ leave an’ likin’ to shout;But to stand an’ be still to the Birken’ead drill is a damn tough bullet to chew,An’ they done it, the Jollies - ‘Er Majesty’s Jollies - soldier an’ sailor too!Their work was done when it ‘adn’t begun; they was younger nor me an’ you;Their choice it was plain between drownin’ in ‘eaps an’ bein’ mopped by the screw,So they stood an’ was still to the Birken’ead drill, soldier an’ sailor too!There’s no reason to doubt that the events on HMS birkenhead were the origin of the women and children first practise. It seems that the phrase wasn’t used until later though. It doesn’t appear in any of the contemporary reports of the wreck. Something very close is cited in reference to a later wreck - that of the Central America, which went down on a voyage to New York in 1857. This

reference is from the magazine Godey’s Lady’s book, December 1857:“Captain Herndon’s first order, ‘Save the women and children!’ was the test of this Christian heroism... Every man on board that doomed ship knew the captain was acting rightly.”The first use of the precise phrase is from a work of fiction - W. D. O’Connor’s Harrington, 1860:“Back from the boats... The first man that touches a boat I’ll brain. Women and children first, men.”

SMOKe GeTS IN YOUr eYeSThe best things about retirement in the UK are that (at least for the time being) you get to travel free on buses, and receive an annual winter fuel allowance just in time for Christmas. Also - against all the odds - ageing rock bands are still doing the rounds, and you finally have the time and inclination to catch up with them before it’s too late.On the downside the number of funerals to attend begins to outnumber the gigs. Februarys’ tally was two, prompting Mags’ Mum to speculate on the fate of her artificial hip post mortem.‘Do they take false hips and things out before ...you know.....?’ she asked. I told her no - they have a big magnet to separate out the metal bits afterwards. ‘but my hip is plastic’ she replied. Fortunately I was about to rush off to catch my bus, courtesy of the State, but was left pondering what makes elderly people begin to ask the kind of awkward questions which children are prone to do.I realise that we are all under pressure to recycle as much as we can, and maybe, having just had a successful routine checkup of said hip, Mum thought that it would be wasteful to burn such a perfect prosthetic joint. Which in turn brought to mind an incident in HuaHin about 13 years ago.The new crematorium facility had just been installed in Wat Ampharam. Paid for by some generous local benefactor whose afterlife is no doubt assured, the then shiny new building boasting an equally shiny new big chimney still stands right in the middle of town. Within easy walking distance of the markets, Mall, and main bar area.Very soon after the facility opened however it was discovered that smoke from the shiny new chimney travelled even more easily over the town than pedestrians.

Much to the dismay of residents in the vicinity, a most peculiar and very unpleasant smell reached our nostrils. It was judged to be too early in the day for barbecuing pigs, but the mystery was finally solved when MamaSan returned from the market with the news that ‘they try to burn two at same time.’No doubt a well intentioned effort to conserve energy and help save the planet, and one which has hopefully never been repeated.

This is not one to try repeating when you can no longer count the number of bins in that pot on the bar in front of you.For such a silly sounding word it has a quite simple meaning - a person who studies and collects information about flags, while Its’ pal ‘vexillology’ is the study of flags.More ‘ologys’ are sure to follow in the coming weeks.

SOCHI, rUSSIAThe centre of Sochi was left decimated after hordes of British curling hooligans wrought destruction on their surroundings in the run up to last weekend’s men’s final.With Britain taking on Canada in the 1:30pm final, so-called fans were seen drinking heavily and picking fights with locals and opposition fans alike.Running battles throughout the streets of Sochi saw bars and restaurants destroyed and numerous arrests made.A Sochi police spokesperson told us, “We had heard rumours of the infamous curling hooligans, but nothing had prepared us for this.”“They were shouting at passers-by, drinking heavily and abusing other nations in the form of song long before the violence broke out.”“We suspect some of these people are not even curling fans at all, they are just here to fight.”A member of the British curling ‘firm’ agreed to speak with us on the basis we didn’t print
