Cerro Vanguardia obtained a Five Stars certification from Caterpillar for their heavy maintenance workshop. This certification rewards excellence, quality and best management practices in heavy maintenance processes and in caring for the environment.

For the past two years, the mine has been working to maintain that certification, with one of the highest levels of excellence awarded globally at 98%.

The certification is based on 14 standards of heavy equipment maintenance. One of the highlights at the mine, is the water reuse system in the truck wash facility, which allows the wash water to be separated from the grease and oils and to re-use.

Cerro Vanguardia is the first AngloGold Ashanti operation to obtain that certification, and the second mining company in Argentina.

• Brazil

AGA Mineração has been accredited with the Principle and Code of Practice requirements as issued by the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). The silver Minas Gerais Quality Award (PMQ) was also granted to the mine for its high quality processes. In addition, the Good Practices in Work Health and Safety 2012 was awarded by the Brazilian Mining Institute for the mine’s exemplary attitude towards health and safety. The Mining Environmental Management Prize (PMGA) was also bestowed.

The mine’s environmental efforts have been successful, as the III Hugo Werneck Award of Sustainability and Love for Nature Awards was achieved (also known as the Oscar of Ecology). This is supported by the Sou Ecologico Group and is affiliated to the State Secretariat department of environment and sustainable development and Federation of Industries of the State of Minas Gerais.

This award focuses on the key environmental initiatives of: individuals, private and public companies and educational institutions. The projects must contribute to protecting the environment and improve the quality of life for the surrounding population/s.

Obtained recognition from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Socially Responsible Investment (JSE SRI) 2012, and has been included on the list of constituents.

• United states of america

Cripple Creek & Victor won the 2012 Environmental Stewardship Pollution Protection and the 2012 Excellence in Hard Rock Reclamation awards. These awards were granted for the mine’s efforts with the Altman Backfill Reclamation project.
