Fast, effective projects and reliable operations

Page 8 | AVEVA solutions for the Power Industry

AVEVA solutions are proven to save time and costs in power projects. These savings come in a number of areas.

Fast project start-upEase of project start-up is an important factor for on-time completion.AVEVA products are designed to support a fast project start-up, enablingteams of engineers to be rapidly and effectively deployed onto theproject, and to be able to work efficiently in parallel.

Reuse of designA key factor in achieving fast and timely power plant projects andreducing project risk, is the ability to make effective use of existingdesigns and component information. One of the key differentiators thatAVEVA brings to this business is data reuse on a much larger scale thancan be achieved with alternative approaches. Data from previous projectscan be quickly assembled and reapplied to the new project. Standardparts of the design can be shared between multiple projects with theminimum of administration.

Managed multiple-location engineeringThe project team for a new power plant normally includes personnel froma number of different companies, each of which will be at a differentgeographical location. In almost all cases, the construction site is remotefrom all of the design centres, adding yet another location for the projectteam. AVEVA has unique technology which allows such a distributedproject team to efficiently work together in a well-controlled manner, even across complex geographical and contractual boundaries.

AVEVA tools enable the effective sharing of work processes and systemsacross all these locations, while retaining project and system control. These include a concurrent distributed 3D plant design with centralproject administration.

The right construction information, at the right timeThe major cost of a new-build project lies in the materials andconstruction costs. Delivering the right information to the procurementand construction team at the right time is critical to achieving projectschedule and budget. The information needs to be accurate so thateverything fits first time, avoiding costly rework and over- or under-ordering of materials.

AVEVA’s engineering design tools build an accurate and intelligent multi-discipline 3D model of the plant, based on the project specifications andthe materials/components required for the project. The design can bechecked for errors, then used to generate highly accurate constructioninformation.

Sophisticated change management capabilities allow changes in thedesign to be accurately tracked and construction information updatedaccordingly. Materials management tools allow the material to beaccurately planned for and tracked from the initial estimates through tothe construction site.

Information available for reliable operationAVEVA supports the operational phase with tools that allow data andinformation from multiple sources and systems to be integrated and madeavailable to the operations and maintenance team via an easy-to-use webportal.

This data can be from many sources – for example, from the originaldesign systems, or site survey data in photogrammetry or laser scanningformat. This means that the Owner Operator can effectively plan outages, maintenance work and modifications. Fast and efficient access toaccurate plant data also ensures that, during unplanned outages, thework to bring the plant back on line is not held up by lack of information.

Data produced by AVEVA solutions will be fully upward compatible with new releases, to protect your investment in project data

AVEVA’s evolutionary development approach allows you to control and protect your data investments

AVEVA solutions for the Power Industry | Page 9

Data created in a power plant project represents a large, highlyvaluable investment which you should be able to exploit for years to come.

Evolutionary developmentAVEVA’s strategy is one of continual progression, providing a continuousstream of product updates, each of which is upwards compatible with theprevious ones. This gives our customers the ability to reap the rewards ofthe latest IT technology, whilst retaining the value of their investment indata and trained personnel.

Latest technologyThe AVEVA evolutionary development approach means that the latestversions of our products always have the most up-to-date technology. For example, the AVEVA PDMS product has a history of more than 30years, yet today’s version provides a fast and effective Microsoft .NET userinterface.

Object-based approach to projectsAVEVA has an object-based approach to a project, with an engineeringdatabase of plant objects which includes technical attributes and datafrom multiple authoring tools, including P&ID and 3D layout. Consistencyof data between disciplines and the P&ID and 3D layout in the finaldesign is essential for the later project stages. Database access controlensures that all designers use only the released data from otherdisciplines.

Effective use of dataThe project team for a new power plant consists of many teams of people, often in different locations, all of whom are continuously accessing, creating and modifying data.

The ability to manage work processes and data in such an environment iscritical. That is why AVEVA places so much emphasis on the datamanagement aspects of its solutions – ensuring that appropriate accesscontrols and release and issue procedures can be applied.

Long-term protection of data investmentsThanks to AVEVA’s evolutionary development strategy, data produced byAVEVA solutions will be fully upwards compatible with new releases, toprotect your investment in project data long into the future. This hasalways been, and always will be, one of our guiding principles.

Basic design is the stage at which the outline design of the plant isdeveloped. AVEVA solutions support you in developing the basic designitself, and in producing the deliverables required for the planning, financing, licensing and regulatory approval processes.

Standardised designsStandardisation of plant modules and the reuse of pre-existing designand component information are commonplace throughout the powerindustry. These activities reduce the costs and schedule times forlicensing, design and construction, and simplify all aspects of plantoperation and maintenance.

A typical basic design for a thermal power plant, shown in AVEVA Review

AVEVA solutions facilitate modular design and allow component anddesign information to be reused from previous or ‘standardised’ designsand/or shared between multiple execution projects. The design can then be further developed, to meet the needs of thespecific plant geography, operating conditions and local governmentregulations in a managed and controlled environment.

Effective transition to Detail DesignAVEVA solutions give you the ability to reuse data and informationprepared during the basic design to give a fast-track start-up for detaildesign. AVEVA solutions also provide the tools to manage this transitionand to track any major changes in key plant parameters that have beenintroduced between basic and detail design.

AVEVA solutions give project managers full visibilityof project progress, and ensure controlled access toproject data.

Complete overview of project progressWith the AVEVA project management solution, projectdata is made available for the management functions ofa project. The object-based approach of AVEVA solutionsmeans that an item can be easily tracked from the P&IDstage through 3D design and into materialsmanagement. By monitoring and summarising this flowof information, AVEVA solutions give project managersa complete overview of the project progress, with aminimum of effort.

Project controlAccess control and authority rights can be set up to, forexample, exactly reflect the contract terms between thevarious parties. This ensures that only personnel withthe correct authority can change or update the data.Using AVEVA’s object technology it is possible to recordand monitor the status and maturity of the design data. This information can be used to make tactical decisionsin progressing the project – for example, to expediteinformation that is holding up the project or to stopdesign work on an area where the input data isimmature, meaning that the design will have to bereworked later.

Change managementAll design development is recorded so that, at a laterdate, reports can be created to assist in trackingchanges. The information on changes can also beautomatically shown on all kinds of engineeringdrawings, including piping isometrics and layoutdrawings.

Information managementProject management has traditionally involved findingproject information by analysing detailed reports andholding time-consuming and expensive meetings withmanagers and lead engineers. AVEVA solutions allowmanagement to concentrate on real management. Thedetailed data input by departmental users isautomatically collated to present easily assimilated,high-level management reports for review, action andinclusion in progress meetings. This is achievedthrough up-to-date, reliable, factual data presented inthe form of trend graphs and highlighted problemperformance versus target matrices. This uniqueapplication can cover materials, documents, progressand productivity, and costs. The result is more effectiveand proactive management, significantly reducingproject risk at lower man-hour costs.

AVEVA provides highly effective, proven and scalablesolutions for the engineering and detailed design ofpower plants.

Concurrent engineeringThis stage is characterised by concurrent engineeringover a broad set of work fronts, and a quicklyexpanding set of information. The project is likely tobe distributed and involve several contracts, all withinterface management issues. AVEVA solutions allowmanaged change and development of the engineeringand the layout parts of the design, so that both typesof work can progress in parallel. Data inconsistency isa standard phenomenon of parallel design processes.AVEVA solutions provide effective tools to manage thissituation as part of a controlled workflow, enablinginconsistencies to be identified and resolved as designprogresses.

Design integrity of engineeringIntegrity is achieved through a datacentric approachwithin the AVEVA solution and involves the controlledintegrity of the P&IDs, process design data, and multi-discipline mechanical design data. The solutionprovides effective information sharing, built-in changemanagement and change notification, controlledautomated data release between disciplines, andconsolidated reporting across disciplines.

Design integrity of layoutAVEVA solutions provide the foundation for error-freedetailed design through their proven functionalityfor building multi-discipline 3D models that can be checked for clashes and all kinds of datainconsistencies.

Deliverables managementThe timely production of design documents remainskey to a successful project. AVEVA’s solution managesdeliverables throughout the project lifecycle ofproduction, issue, comment and review, and reissue –all in accordance with the overall project schedule.Vendor documents are similarly managed to ensurethat approved versions are available to meet both thedetailed design and construction programmes.Comprehensive exception reporting enables problemareas, such as late vendor documents, to be quicklyidentified and proactively managed.

Change highlightingControlling and communicating changes to project data is vital tosuccessful project execution. AVEVA solutions automatically track andhighlight all data changes, and provide an effective mechanism forconfiguring the controlled approval and release of data and associatedchange notification, while maintaining full data history.

Automated drawing productionWhen approved, the model data is used to create all the different types of output drawings and reports to support the construction of plant.

The focus here is on the automated creation of drawings and reports toreduce design man-hours whilst retaining accuracy, consistency andrepeatability.

Global workingEPC contractors today need to use the best value designers from aroundthe world. This means that the facility to work on remote sites must beavailable. AVEVA’s on-line global synchronisation technology not onlyprovides fault-tolerant operation, its access control can be configured toreflect levels and areas of responsibility in the project, while alsoretaining the flexibility to add and remove sites as the project progresses.

Delivering the right material, in the right quantity, to the right place,at the right time, is a fundamental requirement of any project. AVEVAsolutions enable you to control all material throughout its fulllifecycle; from initial identification by the engineering department, through procurement, to final installation, thus reducing the risk ofover/under ordering and of delays on site caused by materialshortages.

Identifying and requisitioning tagged itemsThe controlled release from engineering of tagged items together withsupporting information, ensures that the correct items are requisitionedand subsequently procured. When design changes occur, the itemsaffected are proactively highlighted for appropriate action wherever theyare within the supply chain.

Identifying and requisitioning bulk materialAt an early stage, a preliminary Material Take Off (MTO) can be prepared, which can then be compared to updated MTOs as the design matures. Thismeans that the forecast for total material usage can be successivelyadjusted to the final amount. As a result, materials managers can place aninitial order for material early on, then adjust the order later to ensurethat they only receive the material that is actually needed. AVEVAsolutions facilitate the control of bulk material for all disciplines, guaranteeing total integrity throughout engineering, detailed design andlayout, and requisitioning.

Vendor document control Controlling the large volume and complexity of vendor documents can bea major problem. You must aim to minimise the amount of documentationwhilst ensuring it has sufficient content to meet your needs; monitor thereview and approval process; and control the distribution process to site,to client, and so on. AVEVA solutions support all these tasks and ensurethe timely delivery of documents to meet both the detailed engineeringand the construction programmes.

Procurement The materials management features also make the identified materialavailable to an ERP system for the placing of orders.

Managing materials for constructionThe delivery time for all identified material is set at the time ofprocurement. AVEVA solutions allow the tracking of delivery of items sothat site personnel can clearly see the availability of material in the sitestore or its due delivery date. Clear visibility of planned deliveries allowsmanagers to identify problems early, and expedite or replan as necessary.AVEVA tools put site managers in full control of their work so that they canuse their skill and expertise to optimise the construction process on aday-by-day basis. It is at this stage that the majority of the cost benefitsare realised – both contractor claims and surplus materials can be reducedto a minimum.

Construction

To achieve success in construction, AVEVAsolutions ensure delivery of the right informationand material at the right time for each stage ofconstruction.

Site worksClearing the selected site andinstalling foundations andservices can be a lengthy process.Early extraction of the dataneeded to carry out this workensures that, when the detailed design and mainitems of equipment are available, the rest of theconstruction can proceed without any delays.Changes to foundations, etc. can be very expensive,so it is important to get the information right fromthe beginning. AVEVA solutions are structured toensure that the necessary data can be released andthen frozen for later stages of design, to ensure thatthe rest of the design is correctly referenced to thecompleted ‘as-built’ site works.

FabricationThe detailed design will identify, not only items to be procured, but also those which need to beprefabricated. The timing of thefabrication must be synchronised with the needs ofthe construction plan. AVEVA solutions createspecific fabrication documents which ensure thatitems are created to a high degree of accuracy, sothat they will fit first time, with no reworking.

ConstructionThe key to efficientconstruction is accurate, timelydesign information coupledwith the timely delivery ofequipment, bulk materials and prefabricated items.AVEVA solutions allow the necessary information tobe created for each stage of construction. AVEVAtools also manage the timetabling of materialidentification and delivery. If the constructionsequence needs to be modified, perhaps due to lateinformation or late delivery of equipment, AVEVAsolutions can be used to overview the availability ofmaterial and information and assist in developingthe modified sequence.

Construction (continued)

Commissioning and handoverProject times can be reduced byprogressively commissioningthe plant as the constructionprogresses. In order to work inthis way, the structured organisation of the projectdata into rooms, systems and construction stages isessential. The database architecture of AVEVAsolutions ensures that the data for commissioningand handover can be easily extracted and presentedin an industry-neutral format. The data can also bepresented in an open AVEVA web application, allowing all project personnel to access it in an easy-to-use format that does not require the user tounderstand the original modelling/editing toolswhich created the data. Finally, AVEVA solutions canbe used to create an ‘as-built’ model by comparisonand modification of the ‘as-designed’ model, usingphotogrammetry and/or laser scanning results fromthe actual built plant.

AVEVA solutions assist in maintaining plantavailability and operational efficiency by providingfast, easy-to-use access to integrated plantinformation.

Critical factors in efficient operation are the ability torespond rapidly to any event that causes an unplannedoutage, and to ensure that planned outages are carriedout in the most effective manner.

Major planned plant outages are hectic periods ofactivity, involving significant numbers of peopleworking in parallel on the plant. If plant downtime is tobe minimised, such outages must be planned in detailwell in advance of the outage, then completed preciselyto schedule.

Access to reliable, integrated, up-to-date informationabout the plant is one of the key factors in effectiveoutage planning. It’s also a key factor in responding toany event that causes or threatens an unplanned plantoutage.

Immediate access to plant informationAVEVA’s engineering portal and web-basedcollaboration tools provide fast, easy, on-demandaccess to integrated plant information. The portal canbe loaded with data from a wide variety of informationsources, from scanned paper documents to intelligentdesign data, to maintenance records and partsinformation.

A key factor in AVEVA’s solution is the ability tointegrate information and data from virtually anyinformation source, and to deliver it to a maintenanceengineer who needs only to know how to use a webbrowser.

By adopting AVEVA’s solutions, plant operators are ableto dynamically access data from disparate systems toplan outage tasks and respond rapidly to unplannedoutage events. AVEVA’s portal solution enablesmaintenance engineers to locate all plant information, wherever it is stored. It can also provide linkages towork and safety management systems (e.g. permit towork and plant isolation tracking) in compliance withHealth and Safety regulations.

AVEVA solutions help you perform all kinds ofmodifications to the plant, from routinemaintenance tasks to major refurbishments andcomplete life extension programmes.

AVEVA engineering design tools provide the integratedplatform for plant design that EPC contractors havetraditionally used for new-build plant. However, byintegrating AVEVA solutions with laser modelling andphotogrammetry, and utilising the power of 3Dmodelling, power companies now have the ability toshortcut refurbishment project schedules and reducerefurbishment costs.

The same tools can also be used to identify differencesbetween the ‘as-designed’ and the ‘as-built’ at anystage of the plant lifecycle. They might, typically, beused during construction, commissioning andhandover.

Decommissioning, dismantling and demolition arethe final stages in the life of any power plant. However, these activities can be complex, costly anddangerous, and they need to be carefully planned andclosely monitored.

Working with AVEVA solutions, plant owners anddecommissioning contractors are able to exercise morecontrol over the entire decommissioning process, andto plan for a safe and efficient set of tasks for the entireproject.

For example, laser scanning and photogrammetrictechniques can be used to quickly and efficientlycapture accurate information about the plant. This canthen be used within AVEVA’s solutions to plan, validateand approve the decommissioning and dismantlingactivities.

Easy to use, web-based information portals can provideaccess to key information about the plant, such as thelocation and history of hazardous or contaminatedmaterials. Such systems can also be used to provideeasy on-line access into records systems that storeinformation about the long-term disposal of suchitems.
