INTRODUCTIONThe Avayat RS9 uninterruptible power system (UPS) is a modular UPSthat contains battery modules and power control modules (referred to aspower modules). These modules plug into a rack cabinet structurecontaining additional control, communication, and display functionsthat enable integrated control of all power modules. The UPS is housedin a single cabinet, with extra battery capacity housed in auxiliarybattery cabinets.

Power ModulesThe pluggable power modules can be removed and replaced(hot-swapped) without powering the UPS down if the UPS has sufficientredundant capacity. Battery modules may also be hot-swapped formaintenance. Power control circuitry in the cabinet senses problems inpower modules, and automatically transfers control and load to theremaining power modules.

All power modules share the load requirements equally. For example, three power modules are capable of supplying a total of 9 kVA. If a loadrequires only 4.5 kVA, each power module supplies 1.5 kVA to theoutput. If one power module is removed or for some reason fails, each ofthe two remaining power modules would supply half of the load, or2.25 kVA. In other words, redundancy exists when the load can besupplied by less than all of the installed power modules.

Battery ConfigurationsThe Avaya RS9 UPS has two different options for additional batteryconfigurations:

S External Battery Module Cabinet (EBMC) - this cabinet is recommendedfor applications that require less than one hour of run time. OneEBMC can be connected to the UPS.

S Extended Battery Cabinet (EBC A through F) - this cabinet is recommendedfor applications that require more than one hour of run time. Up totwo EBCs can be connected to the UPS.

Battery Charger Modules

NOTE One battery charger module is required whenever one or two EBCs are used.A 9 kVA UPS system with 13 or 14 battery strings also requires one battery chargermodule.

The optional battery charger module is designed to provide additionalcurrent for faster recharging of UPS battery modules in systems withmany batteries. It is capable of providing up to 20 amperes of current foroptimum charging, based upon the condition and number of batteries inthe system.

The battery charger module is similar in appearance to a power module. The primary difference is the light-purple colored front label. It can beplugged into any UPS cabinet slot above the battery modules.

The battery charger module operates in automatic modes within the UPScabinet under control of the UPS power modules. It communicatesthrough a controller area network (CAN) bus with the power modules. The power modules monitor and control the battery charger. Alarmconditions detected by the battery charger module are logged andannounced by the UPS system (see “Alarm Log” on page 38). Normaloutput voltage is 133 Vdc.

Safety WarningsRead the following precautions before you install the UPS.

INSTALLATION SETUPThis chapter explains how to setup and install the Avaya RS9 cabinets:

S Clearances and location requirements

S UPS Setup

S Moving the cabinets

Equipment ClearancesAll cabinets require the following clearances to allow for servicing andadequate ventilation:

S From the side panels: 6I (15.2 cm)

S Top and back: 12I (30.5 cm)

S Front: 36I (91.5 cm)

If flexible conduit connects the UPS to the service input and loaddistribution panels, you may be able to gain access for servicing bymoving the UPS. If this is the case, you must still leave 12I (30.5 cm)clearance at the back and 6I (15.2 cm) at the sides of the UPS forventilation.

NOTE Do not block the ventilation holes on each side and the back of the unit.

Location RequirementsInstall the Avaya RS9 UPS as close as possible to the equipment orthe load distribution panel it will protect. If this distance is more than25 ft (7.6m), transient noise can reappear in the electrical distributionsystem.

If a separate battery cabinet is installed (either an External BatteryModule Cabinet or Extended Battery Cabinet), the battery cabinets mustbe adjacent to the Avaya RS9 UPS.

OPERATIONThe Avaya RS9 UPS operates in several different modes. Normally itoperates under internal control, called Auto mode, to automaticallyprotect loads connected to it. It also functions under operator control toenable manual override should servicing or testing be required.

Figure 18 is an illustration of the operating modes. In Auto mode, theUPS automatically switches between modes depending on line and loadconditions.

Double Conversion(Line Conditioning) Internal Bypass

Battery Off

Figure 18. UPS Operating Modes Under Auto Mode Control

Double Conversion mode produces output power from the internal DCbus. The AC input power is rectified and boosted to supply this DC bus.The UPS switches automatically to and from Battery mode with nointerruption (0 ms transfer time) as AC input power drops and returns.Batteries are charged in this mode.

Battery mode produces power from the batteries to supply the internalDC bus.

Internal Bypass (Bypass) mode shunts power flow around the DC/ACinternal circuitry to keep the output powered with no line conditioning.Electromagnetic interference (EMI) and surge circuitry still protect theloads from voltage spikes and noise.

Page 38: Avaya RS9 Uninterruptible Power Systems (9–18 kVA, 9-Slot ...lit.powerware.com/ll_download.asp?file=9_18RS9UPS9slot.pdf · Avaya RS9 Uninterruptible Power Systems (9–18 kVA, 9-Slot

Operation

32 Avayat RS9 UPS (9–18 kVA, 9-Slot Models) Site Preparation, Installation and Operator’s Manual S 164201543 Rev A

Off mode turns off the output and most internal circuitry. Within thismode, another mode (Sleep) turns off all internal circuitry when AC lineis not present and battery voltage drops to a low threshold. If AC inputvoltage is not present in Off mode, the user can direct the UPS to enterSleep mode by selecting the Battery Protect (BP) feature (see “RemovingInput Power” on page 33). When AC input voltage returns in the Offmode (caused by a low battery alarm condition), the UPS automaticallyrecovers and, if the Auto Restart parameter is enabled, switches toDouble Conversion. Auto Restart is enabled as a factory-default.

After a discharge and subsequent low-battery shutdown, the UPS willautomatically recover from Sleep mode if the Auto Restart parameter isenabled.

If the UPS has been manually set to operate in Bypass or Battery mode, change the System Control Mode Preference (menu 4-1) selection toAuto to return to normal Auto mode operation.

NOTE The UPS will not start operating if AC input voltage or frequency is beyondacceptable limits or if the system mode selection is set to Battery. The UPS can not godirectly from Off to Battery.

Removing Input PowerAlways put the Avaya RS9 UPS into the Off mode before removing inputpower. Avaya RS9 system batteries will discharge if the input linevoltage is disconnected or turned off without first turning off the AvayaRS9 UPS.

If the input power source will be disconnected or turned off for morethan a day or two, you should put the UPS into Sleep mode. Do this byturning the UPS off, removing AC input power, and then pressing theON button and selecting Battery Protect (BP). Sleep mode allows theUPS to remain unpowered for up to six months without having toremove or recharge batteries.

Failure to properly power down the Avaya RS9 UPS could permanentlydamage any installed batteries. Also, if batteries become severelydischarged, the UPS might not start immediately when input power isrestored.

COMMUNICATIONAvaya offers several methods of communicating with your Avaya RS9system in addition to the front panel display:

S LanSafe Power Management Software

S Optional Internal Web/SNMP Card

S Optional Relay Card

S Communication Slots

S Dedicated Input Signals

S DB-9 Communication Port

LanSafe Power Management SoftwareEach Avaya RS9 UPS ships with LanSafe Power Management Softwareand an interface cable. To begin installing LanSafe software, see theinstructions accompanying the Software Suite CD.

LanSafe software uses an RS-232 serial link to communicate with theUPS, and it provides you with up-to-date graphics of UPS power andsystem data and power flow. It also gives you a complete record ofcritical power events, and it notifies you of important UPS or powerinformation. If there is a power outage and the Avaya RS9 system batterypower becomes low, LanSafe software can automatically shut down yourcomputer system to protect your data before the UPS shutdown occurs.

Optional Internal Web/SNMP CardThis card provides the Avaya RS9 system with its own ethernet networkconnection, allowing it to be remotely monitored and controlled viaindustry-standard internet browsers. The HTML interface enables UPSmonitoring and management from anywhere on the internet or withinyour intranet. In addition, third-party Simple Network ManagementProtocol (SNMP) software packages may also be used to communicateremotely with the Avaya RS9 system.

The Web/SNMP Card also allows UPS-dependent computer systems toautomatically shut down during extended power outages using theNetWatch client software provided on the Software Suite CD.

Optional Relay CardThe relay card provides true relay contact output to peripheral devices.Outputs are user-selectable as normally open or normally closed. Referthe instructions included with the relay card for more detail.

Communication SlotsThe Avaya RS9 UPS has two communication slots that allow quickinstallation of the optional Web/SNMP card or other similarcommunication interfaces. These interface cards extend the capabilitiesof the Avaya RS9 system to provide compatibility with network andremote monitoring/management systems.

Dedicated Input SignalsEmergency Power-Off: Connection to a facility Emergency Shutdownswitch provides a method for emergency Avaya RS9 system shutdown.Opening this connection creates an immediate shutdown of the AvayaRS9 UPS output.

On-Generator: An external signal that the input power is being suppliedby a generator. Closure of this contact causes the UPS to change thefollowing parameters to preset values that are designed to optimizeperformance during periods of generator instability:

S Phase Lock Window and Frequency Slew Rate. These parametersincrease the rate at which the UPS tracks the input line, which causesfewer recognized line faults during generator instability.

S Frequency Glitch Count. This parameter increases the number of badfrequency cycles before the unit transfers to battery power. Thisallows the UPS to operate smoothly during generator instabilitywithout transferring to battery.

S Maximum Delta and Line Delta. These parameters widen theacceptable input voltage range, allowing the UPS to ignore anytransient voltage regulation problems a generator may experienceduring unstable periods.

These parameters are also available to trained service personnel throughthe Service Menu.

See Figure 7 on page 14 and Figure 11 on page 17 to make theconnection for all dedicated input signals.

MAINTENANCENOTE Technicians must observe important safety precautions while performing thesechecks.

NOTE Avaya recommends that you schedule preventive maintenance checks at leastevery six months.

The Avaya RS9 system is designed to provide years of trouble-freeoperation. Its internal control system checks the batteries and inverterperiodically to ensure reliable operation. In fact, you’ll probably findthat your Avaya RS9 system requires less maintenance than any of yourother computer peripherals.

Nevertheless, the Avaya RS9 UPS and optional battery cabinets dorequire some attention to assure continued reliable service. The servicetechnician should follow the recommended maintenance schedule, which includes the following items:

S Check operating environment for clean, cool, dry conditions.

S Inspect and clean the unit.

S Check operation of fans (power modules).

S Check and tighten all connections.

S View and record the alarm and inverter logs.

S Check the batteries.

S Check the displayed UPS readings against actual measurements andrecalibrate if necessary.

S Perform a system test.

S Check and record the values of the parameters in the System StatusMenu (menu 1) online and on battery.

S Check the MOV surge suppression pack.

For more information on preventive maintenance checks, contact yourAvaya service representative.
