As we enter the home stretch of 2017, allow me to recap what a successful year it’s been so far. We are grateful for your business and we continue to welcome new members and new businesses to our credit union family every day. With our goal of being the preferred financial institution in South Central Pennsylvania, we are humbled by those of you who choose us to help you with your finances. 2017 has been a year of growth for our credit union. With growth comes changes, new opportunities, new ways of doing business, and constantly looking ahead to the future. We will continue to provide you with exceptional member service without sacrificing who we are today or where we’ve come from.

From January 1 through July 31, we have welcomed into our credit union family 45,001 new individual members and 625 new Select Employer Groups (SEGs). For those of you who don’t know, a SEG is a business, school, church, or organization who partnered with us to be able to offer credit union membership to their employees, students, members or volunteers. Many of our SEGs are referrals from members like you.

Referrals are an important part of our membership growth and as shown by the numbers referenced above, we know you’re out there talking about us. Did you know that through our CASH4U program, you can earn $5 for every referral you make to us that opens an account? Visit any branch to pick up our CASH4U flyer to hand out to family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

"We are committed to providing genuine, personal attention to each other and all of our members."

We are pleased to report that the results of our 2017 Annual Membership Satisfaction Survey have been received and the percentage of respondents who indicated they are Satisfied, Very Satisfied or Extremely Satisfied remains at 96.9% which is the same percentage as 2016. This score represents how effectively we are serving our members, how efficient our systems are performing, and how you perceive us. Thank you for your continued confidence!

We are committed to providing genuine, personal attention to each other and all of our members. We make it our responsibility to make a difference. Delivering unparalled experiences to you, whether in person, on the phone, or via electronic communication is our number one priority. We aim to connect with you, be responsive and take ownership of any concern or issue you may have, recognize your needs and expectations, and exceed your idea of what you consider to be outstanding service.

As we continue moving ahead, remember we want to improve processes, products or services, and we encourage you to provide us with your feedback. We invite you to fill out a “Let Us Know Comment Card” or send an email to [email protected].

Overdraft Protection & Courtesy Pay in a Nutshell

Overdraft ProtectionMembers 1st offers fee-free Overdraft Protection. You select the savings accounts or lines of credit that you want as overdraft sources and the funds are automatically transferred to your checking account when needed to cover any overdrafts you may have. Be aware that overdraft transfers from savings accounts are subject to the Regulation D limitation allowing a maximum of six (6) electronic transfers per calendar month. You can set up your overdraft sources and the order of these accounts on Members 1st Online, at a branch, or by calling TeleBranch.

Courtesy PayCourtesy Pay is a discretionary service offered to eligible checking accounts to pay checks, ACH debits, bill pay or recurring debit card transactions. It can be used for payment in the event that you have insufficient available balances to cover the item(s). Courtesy Pay can help you avoid the embarrassment and inconvenience of returned items. Having Courtesy Pay will often prevent returned item fees or late charges imposed by merchants or other payees. If used, your account will result in a negative balance up to the amount of your Courtesy Pay Limit and you will be charged a $37 Courtesy Pay fee for each item paid. The limit amount may change periodically and is based on your account remaining in good standing. You can view your Courtesy Pay Limit on Members 1st Online under your Checking Account Details. You are automatically enrolled for this service and may opt out at any time by notifying us.

Have you ever wondered what services Members 1st offers its members to prevent insufficient funds or declined payments? We offer three types of overdraft services.

Extra Courtesy PayExtra Courtesy Pay is an optional service provided to members that are qualified for Courtesy Pay and choose to opt in for the Extra Courtesy Pay coverage. Extra Courtesy Pay covers one-time ATM and debit card purchases using your Courtesy Pay limit. Once enrolled, members can opt out by notifying us via Members 1st Online or in person.

For more information on Overdraft Services, please check members1st.org/products-services/deposit-accounts/checking, or contact Deposit Operations at (800) 283-2328 ext. 6022, TeleBranch (Customer Service) at (800) 237-7288 or visit any branch.

5 Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Rewards Credit Card

1. Pick a card that offers rewards you'll actually useIt's easy to get caught up in the excitement around a new card that's just hit the market. But before you apply, consider whether the card comes with a rewards program that actually fits your lifestyle. Otherwise, you might get stuck with a bunch of points or miles that you'll never redeem — something that happens to 1 in 5 consumers, according to NerdWallet's research on rewards cards.

Doing some digging upfront to find a card that will be valuable to you is the key to ensuring you'll get the most out of your plastic.

2. Know your card's rewards earning structureBy investing a little time in reading your card's terms and conditions, you might find there are ways to score extra points on certain kinds of spending.

For example, it's common for travel credit cards to award extra points or miles for every dollar spent on dining out. Consequently, using your travel card when you take your family out to dinner or pick up your morning coffee is a smart idea, because it will help you get to

One of the best things about choosing to use a rewards credit card for your day-to-day spending is the points, miles or cash back you can earn every time you swipe. But it can be tricky. To make sure you're getting the most out of your card, take a look at the tips below.

Which Members 1st VISA Rewards Card is Best for You?Choose your Rewards! • Cash Back – Earn cash back for everyday purchases. • Points – Earn points to use towards great items. • Low Rate – No frills, just a low interest rate.

For more details, visit members1st.org » products & services » VISA credit cards.

Already have a Members 1st VISA credit card? Ask for a credit line increase!

your next vacation faster. Knowledge is power, so get familiar with the ins and outs of how to maximize earning your rewards.

3. Budget carefully every monthIf you're carrying a balance on your card and justifying it with all the rewards you're earning, here's a wake-up call: You're paying out much more than you're bringing in. Most credit cards return only about 1% of your spending in rewards, and charge double-digit interest rates on unpaid balances.

To make the math work in your favor, stick to a budget so you don't put more on your card than you can pay off each month.

4. Keep your account in good standingOne of the biggest mistakes you can make with a credit card is to fall behind on payments. Miss one and your account will no longer be in good standing and your ability to earn rewards could be jeopardized. Also, your credit score will suffer.

The solution? Pay your credit card bill on time each month or at least the minimum due. Online bill pay can make that process fast and easy.Article courtesy of NerdWallet, Inc.

The Rough Consequences of Not Saving for Retirement

The Rough Consequences of Not Saving for Retirement

More than a quarter of seniors have no retirement savings. To be more specific, the Government Accountability Office says 29% of households headed by people 55 or older have no savings in a retirement account and no possibility of receiving an employer pension.1

Late last year, a PWC survey revealed that 37% of baby boomers had less than $50,000 in retirement assets. Just 24% of baby boomer households PWC polled had saved more than $300,000 for their “second acts.”2

What kind of future awaits boomers who have saved less than $50,000 for retirement? It is hard to say exactly what may happen to them financially, but it is possible to make some educated guesses.

They will likely try to work into their seventies. If their health permits, they will attempt to stay employed at least part time. Their earnings will presumably drop as they age.

They will probably rely heavily on Social Security & home equity. Social Security income by itself will prove insufficient to retire on, so they will look at selling their homes or arranging reverse mortgages to help fund their retirement (if they own homes to begin with).

A fortunate few may have a third option: augmenting their inadequate retirement savings with proceeds from a business sale. Some small business owners save relatively little, believing that the money they get from selling their company will fund their future. That is not a given. It may take years for their business to sell, and it may sell for far less than they assume.

Within a few years, they will need to accept a significantly lower quality of life. They may be forced to scale back creature comforts, live in tiny quarters, or relocate to a cheaper, less desirable area (assuming they can handle relocation costs). They may end up doing all of this.

At some point, they may start spending down their assets. If they do enough of that, they will be eligible for Medicaid – a grim consolation in a sad process. Debts may impel them to whittle away their net worth even faster.

Then, they may need help from their children. Having little or no income besides Social Security, they will struggle mightily to keep up with the bills. If they own their homes free and clear, at least they will be able to stay in them; if not, they may choose the apartment of last resort and move in with one of their adult children.

Will this be your future? If you want to plan to avoid this financial nightmare, then you must save and invest for retirement. Save and invest as if your entire future depends on it, for it may. Saving and investing now could help you save your quality of life someday.
