ISSUE 1
Hello Team,It brings me great pleasure to introduce the first issue of our AuxiliaryServices Newsletter. I want to thank all
of you who have put your time and effort into creating this resource for all of us.
USC and AuxiliaryServices are going through tremendous change. Globally, we see major issues in higher education in
the news on a daily basis. Locally, we deal with the urgent issues we encounter every day. While many of these things may not
seem to touch us directly, I can assure you they do. AuxiliaryServices plays a major role in the USC strategic plan, and we have
very large projects and initiatives rolling out over the next several years designed to address many of these pressing issues.
We look forward to keeping you informed of our collective efforts in the newslet-ter each quarter as projects like the “The Lot”, the Campus Center, our green tram fleet, our new websites and intranet, the Gateway Project, the Housing upgrades, and the HR and Accounting system improve-ments develop.
I encourage you to read aboutour initiatives and news items. AuxiliaryServices truly is a key component to improving the educational experience here at USC.
Fight On!

TrojanHospitality UpdatesConstruction started last month on “The Lot”, the temporary dining facility located on Parking Lot K2 on Downey Way between Watt Way and McClintock Ave. This exciting project coincides with the demolition of the student Commons and Topping StudentCenter which will begin the week of May 19, 2008.
“The Lot”, a 39-foot tall dome-like building with wireless internet and 500+ seats, will house eight dining concepts and a convenience store under one roof.
“From Parking Lot to Dining Spot”The lot south of Salvatori Hall will become a temporary food court while the new Tutor Center is under construction. “We are confident that our students, their parents, alumni and guests will see this interim dining pavilion as a wonderful addition to campus life,” states Scott Shuttleworth, Director of Hospitality. “This temporary dining facility will rival that of many permanent dining facilities at universities across the country.”

In the News...An Uncommon StreakNearly every weekday, a diminutive man with a kind face and a shy smile pushes a cart loaded with fine china, linen napkins and plates of food past Tommy Trojan. “Faithful” is the first virtue chiseled on the base of the statue, and there is no one on campus to whom it applies more than Alejandro “Alex” Rivera.
On Nov. 15, Rivera reacehed his 40 year service milestone. During those four decades, he has never missed a day of work. Not once.
Rivera enjoys the early-morning quiet in the Commons, a building for which he holds a great fondness. It opened in 1968, a year after he arrived, and he has spent four decades washing the presidential china and silver by hand in a tiny galley kitchen tucked away on its upper floor.
The prospect of the Commons being torn down in May brings tears to his eyes. In fact, Rivera has decided to retire with the building on June 15, 2008. “This is my love, my building,” he said. “This building goes down, I cry.”
USC tram driver retires after 34 yearsAfter 34 years as a USC tram driver, Francisco Lopez - whose riders have described his rides as memorable and enjoyable - retired Monday (March 5, 2008). He began cultivating strong relationships with the regular riders on his tram. "It's almost like a family on my tram," Lopez said. Students and staff said they have enjoyed sharing their mornings and afternoons with Lopez. "He's the nicest shuttle driver and I ride a lot of shuttles.” Many staff said they will miss seeing Lopez on their commute to work.
After getting married and having a child, Francisco and his family decided to move to Las Vegas so his daughter could grow up around his wife's extended family. Lopez still kept his job at USC, however, and for the past eight years, he has been traveling to Las Vegas during the weekends to visit his family. Nowthe sweet smile of his 9-year-old daughter has finally lured the 63-year-old to leaveUSC. "The main reason I am going to Las Vegas is to be with my daughter," Lopez said."She is my life. She is my everything."
Lopez will be remembered by individuals across the campus, many of whom haverecently taken the time to say farewell. TrojanTransportation also held a farewell party
for Lopez, complete with a cake and presents. "He's just an amazing person -I don't know what they are going to do without him," said Changchang Wang.Lopez said that he will return to visit USC every opportunity he has."I am going to remember this place for all of my life," he said.

The Gamble House Centennial, 1908-2008The Gamble House Bookstore, a satellite store of the USC TrojanBookstores, invites you to take part in the centennial celebration of the historic home we represent with the USC School of Architecture.
Charles and Henry Greene, design architects, and John and Peter Hall, master craftsmen and contractors, delivered The Gamble House to its owners, David and Mary Gamble (of Procter and Gamble), in 1909. The house was lived in by the Gamble family for over 50 years, and given by them to the City of Pasadena in partnership with USC School of Architecture in 1966. One hundred years after construction we are celebrating the centennial of this Arts and Crafts icon.
Ten years ago when the House was showing its age, the long process for an exterior restoration-conservation plan was set in motion. Completed by late 2004 in time for the centennial, The Gamble House is the grand matriarch of Greene and Greene architecture.
To honor the century landmark of this architectural jewel and the people who made it a reality, several public exhibitions are planned, only one of which is mentioned below. Please visit the website for more information www.gamblehouse.org.
“Fashionable Dress in an Artistic Landmark: The Gamble House, ©1908”An exhibition of mannequins, fashionably dressed to represent Gamble family members, visitors, and their service staff around 1908, displayed in rooms throughout House. Curated by FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising Museum & Galleries from their collection of over 12,000 costumes, the exhibition will open on Sunday April 13th and continue through June 8.
The Gamble House bookstore is developing new merchandise to celebrate the anniversary. Please call for more information and check our website regularly for additions to the collection. www.gamblehouse.org/bookstore

Last month the Design Studio started implementing their new online project management tool, Basecamp. Since then, the Design Studio has experienced some major enhancements to their workflow and is looking forward to the full integration of this on-line tool in the next few months. During the first phase of Basecamp’s launch, several members of AuxiliaryServices were added to the system so they could log in to the website and view their “In Progress” projects. They were able to check artwork proofs, make comments, set milestones, assign to-dos, download files and, in general, be more involved in every step of the design process.
Basecamp tends to be very intuitive; requiring very little training and sometimes none at all. In the short time that Basecamp has been implemented, the Design Studio has seen a dramatic increase in collaboration and productivity among the designers and clients. Job processing time has decreased allowing design and production to begin earlier. Project messages and client feedback has been more direct, more streamlined and easier to track and consolidate. Job related proofs and final files are now accessible at any time of day and the data of every project can be archived. Basecamp gives the Design Studio the ability to log production time in order to determine time allocations per department and to track annual marketing projects so that the data is
synchronized with the master marketing calendars. The Design Studio now has the option to put projects on hold and/or archive the completed projects, so that they are available to be reactivated on an annual marketing cycle.
If you haven't been added to this system yet, don't worry. It’s possible that you haven't had the need to use it yet, or you will be added very soon. If you have any questions, please email: [email protected]. Thank you.

Staff AppreciationDay!
Staff AppreciationDay!
Pg. 7
On February 9, 2008 for SCelebrate Auxiliaries, our spring staff appreciation event, we rented out the Galen Center Arena. Among entertainment provided were carnival games and bounce houses, face painting and balloon arts, a live simulcast of the USC vs. Washington State men’s basketball game, USC Song Girls, basketball contests and prizes, a sale at the Galen Center Bookstore, and refreshments. We had quite a turnout, but more importantly, we built stronger bonds within our AuxiliaryServices family. Whether seeing the smiling children in the bounce house or hearing the cheers of coworkers as an employee won the 3-point contest, this day was full of fun and community spirit. We look forward to seeing you and your family next year! - Event Committee

FIGHTON!
FIGHTON!
Over the past year AuxiliaryServices has taken
significant steps toward improving our
emergency response plans. You will see the
results of these efforts this spring and summer
as we begin regular training exercises on both
campuses.
While we have taken every measure to ensure
you will be safe and supported during an
emergency, there is no substitute for each of us
being individually prepared. Knowing what family
members and friends will be doing during a
crisis brings peace of mind and increases our
own chances of getting through an emergency
at USC.
We encourage each of you to develop a
personal emergency plan that takes into
account the safety of your immediate family and
friends. A good plan should include the following
elements:
• Evacuation: Office, Home
• Communication: Local contacts, Out-of-
state contacts to relay information if local
lines are down, School contacts
• Food, water, tools, supplies: Plan for 3-7
days on your own
• Family/friends plans: So you will know what
they are doing if you cannot leave the
university, and where you can reach them
when you can
We all hope we never have to put these plans to
use, but in case we do face a crisis together, the
better prepared you are personally, the better we
all will be.

Valet Today Campus will be the only storage and moving company
allowed on USC's campus.
TrojanHousing has begun a partnership this year with Valet Today Campus, a
company that offers laundry services, water delivery and bathroom cleaning as
well as summer shipping and storage.
Although many other storage companies are located around Downtown Los
Angeles, the partnerships makes Valet Today the only storage service
authorized to come directly into USC-owned residence buildings and to return
items to students' rooms before they return in the fall, said Cece Capodice,
Valet Today's vice president of marketing.
To utilize Valet Today's service, students must take their belongings to ten
specified locations scattered around university-owned housing between 8:30
a.m. and 9:15 a.m. on either May 10 or May 12, according to the company's
website. Valet Today will then deliver students' belongings to them next fall.
"The initial motivation [for contracting with a storage company] was to be in a
position to better control the number of crates and other moving or storage
boxes that have been traditionally dropped on campus during the move out
period," Ian Sephton, Director of TrojanHousing said.
University Purchasing obtained proposals from several storage companies.
Sephton said Valet Today was chosen based on its menu of available services
and its ability to provide the best pricing package.
"Valet Today is a national organization working with many colleges and
universities," he said. "By partnering with TrojanHousing, they are able to offer
additional services, such as in-room delivery of storage items, which other
vendors will not be able to offer."
"We expect to see a couple
hundred [of users] out of the USC
campus. We feel it's a very strong
market because there is a high
percentage of students who are
from out of state," Capodice said.
