From the Desk of Martin Quinn

President

Dear Valued Distributor:

As part of an ongoing drive to develop a customer-centric company culture, Thermadyne has

embraced an internal initiative called Exceeding Customer Expectations. Quality customer

service is a competitive advantage in today’s marketplace, and we believe we can improve our

service throughout all levels of the organization.

Our most recent efforts have focused on 3 specific areas in which we hope to improve.

Culture and Communications•

Distributor Relations•Benchmarking•

As part of the initiative, the Culture and Communications team has used employee focus

groups to better understand how we can bridge the gap “between where the company is

and where we need to go.” Distributor Relations specifically focuses on helping employees

understand how their daily activities impact the distributor customer and implementing

training programs to deliver service. Benchmarking quite simply helps us understand how our

programs compare to others in and out of our industry.

In addition, we continue to rely on our Distributor Advisory Council to provide valuable

feedback. The Council has given us some pretty strong recommendations on areas of

improvement, and we’ve listened to their recommendations.

Our Exceeding Customer Expectations program is still in its early days, but we’re getting

feedback that our service has improved. We’re getting the message that Thermadyne is an

even better supplier than it was, and that’s encouraging. Exceeding Customer Expectations is a

driver for us, and I have no doubt that Thermadyne will be leading the way through 2010 and

beyond.

Regards,

Martin Quinn

Victor Professional Edge Series RegulatorWelcome to Life on the Edge

Victor Professional Edge Series regulators are designed for durability, ease of use, maximum

flow performance, and safety. The compact design of the Edge is radically different from anything else in the marketplace. While other regulators have multiple gauges and outlets that are vulnerable to damage in the work environment, the Edge, with a single point of contact, minimizes potential impact points to protect the integrity of the gas delivery system. The adjusting knob is the only part of the regulator outside the profile of the cylinder. Dual, built-in gauges are recessed into the body for additional protection.

The Edge Series is also the most user-friendly regulator, allowing a more natural and safer hand/body position for the user when adjusting delivery pressure. The dual gauges feature high-contrast graphics for enhanced visibility in a smaller size, and the color coded knobs mean you can determine the type of gas (oxygen, acetylene, inert gas, LPG, air, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide*) at a glance – indoors or outdoors, up close or far away – for improved safety and better cylinder management.

The Victor® Professional Edge™ Series Regulators for Inert Gas, Acetylene, Oxygen and L.P. Gas are available now. Nitrous Oxide regulators will join the line in the Spring of 2010.

PAGE 4 • Thermadyne Sales & Marketing News Update

Outperforming the competition, the Edge Series regulator offers better flow control across a full range of cylinder pressures, resulting in a more consistent supply for the downstream application. This design means fewer operator adjustments. Other new design features include a unique bolt-on housing cap which provides superior strength in a slimmer profile, while delivering uniform seal compression.

In the gas regulation market, the name Victor has always been synonymous with safety, and the Edge Series regulator is no exception. The new design meets or exceeds all industry standards, including UL 252 and the CGA E-4 “Heated Oxygen Impact Test”. In fact, the new design offers the highest resistance to oxygen-related fires in the industry, passing the stringent ASTM G-175 Promoted Ignition Test. The design is “fault tolerant” in the event of an inboard ignition source in oxygen use, offering unsurpassed resistance to oxygen combustive contamination.

“It has been many years since there has been any significant improvement in the regulator industry, and we felt it was past due,” said Boyer. “More than just a

better design, we wanted to create the best industrial regulator. We began by conducting research with end users and distributors to determine problems common to traditional regulators. We also asked: What new capabilities can we provide to bring even greater value to our customers? Now, the result of our efforts has surpassed even our own expectations, offering the industry a new benchmark for regulator design, user-friendliness, outstanding performance, and unsurpassed safety.”

The Victor Professional Edge Series regulator is the most significant innovation in gas regulator design in more than one hundred years and represents the future of gas regulation.

The Edge regulator has a patent pending design that is only available from Victor.

* Nitrous oxide regulators will be available Spring 2010.

“It’s easy for a regulator to maintain good flow performance when inlet pressures are high, but cylinder pressure decay is inevitable. A regulator needs to function well across the entire range of cylinder pressures,” said Bob Boyer, Victor’s Principal Engineer for Gas Equipment.

Long known for its production of outfits that can be used with all fuel types, Victor has taken versatility

in the gas cutting and welding industry to the next level with the Contender® AF and CutSkill® 250 AF alternate fuel outfits. Several factors can go into making the decision on whether or not to use alternate fuels such as the types of applications and the amount of gases being used. Additionally, those factors can change based on industry and region.

“Different end-users will value different factors, so it’s important for them to make their own determination on what fuel works best for them,” said Victor Senior Product Manager John Henderson.

Acetylene is still the most prevalent fuel used in oxy-fuel cutting, but alternate fuel gases are gaining traction, especially in industries that require a large amount of heavy fabrication like the steel industry.

“Adding these two outfits to our product line has enabled users, who prefer alternate fuel, the ability to take advantage of its benefits. At the same time, the full-line of other versatile products is still available for those wishing to remain flexible or use only acetylene,” said Henderson.

To make the two new outfits more alternate fuel friendly, Victor includes alternate fuel specific tips and fuel regulators.

“I started my portable welding business as Harry’s Welding Service in January of 1972. What I do is mainly pipeline construction. I have used this very same torch since that time. I have had tremendous luck with this torch and recently had it reconditioned for the very fi rst time. I am ready to retire soon, so I want to let you know how much I have appreciated this product over all these years.”

If anyone knows the value of dependable tools, it’s Harry Cazett. He’s been relying on the exact same Victor Journeyman torch to help grow his business for the better part of four decades.

“I had just fi nished welding school and my instructor said Victor was the best,” says Harry. He says he’s used his Journeyman to make different angles on all sizes of pipeline from 2” to 48”.

“A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT BELONGS,” SAYS HARRY. “I HAVE TO GIVE CREDIT TO VICTOR.”

Harry stands by his Journeyman because it’s stood by him for so long. Even as he nears retirement, he continues to pay tribute to a tool he purchased even before he started his business. “My Victor torch has helped me get to where I am today,” he says. “It’s helped me tell my story.”

Many manufacturing firms report that a complete Tweco® MIG Gun Conversion can offer greater

productivity, enhanced consumables life and cost savings.

For example, after switching to Tweco Spray Master MIG guns, one company is seeing:

• Less downtime due to welder fatigue

• 60-70% increase in consumables life

• Smoother operation under demanding conditions

• Improved welder appeal with extended gun trigger

• Wide range of application capabilities

• Lower cost of usage for MIG guns and consumables

DAE Industries is a perfect example of how a company benefits from the advantages of a Tweco MIG Gun Conversion. DAE designs, fabricates and installs aircraft engine stands, docking and maintenance access stands, and aircraft maintenance tooling. The company has 40 welding and fabrication stations, and was looking for a MIG gun that offered maximum durability, greater consumable life, extreme dependability and a more comfortable grip.

“The Spray Master MIG gun is designed with comfort and feel in mind. It has a natural curved handle that

fits well in most welders hands. Being very light weight, the Spray Master is also very maneuverable. It includes a conductor tube that can be rotated 360 degrees, and with several conductor tube angles to choose from, the Spray Master can be configured for nearly any application,” stated Thermadyne District Manager Sean Norton.

“One of the key features of the Spray Master MIG gun is how cool it operates in the most demanding conditions. The extended trigger on the handle keeps my hand away from the heat of the arc especially when we switch to flux cored wires,” stated Jason Burns, one of DAE’s top welders. “Tweco has adapted the conductor tubes on our Spray Masters, to create the perfect angle for welding.”

“It was critical to find a solution that minimized production downtime not only from a welder fatigue and consumable point of view, but from maintenance as well,” Dennis Cook, DAE Fabrication Manager commented. “Spray Master has proven to be extremely dependable and tough with zero failures to date, not even a trigger switch. As a matter of fact, we haven’t even needed to replace any liners yet, the wire keeps feeding extremely smooth.”

Jim Shepard has always had an affi nity for how things work. It began in childhood when he deconstructed bikes and built erector sets for fun.

He learned metalworking in high school and furthered his education with an Associates Degree in machine technology.

At the young age of twenty-four, he opened Shepard Machine Co., where he built and repaired all kinds of intricate devices. His company crafted over 100 machines mainly for the food industry, many taking 2-3 months of 18-hour days. With blueprints and thousands of tiny pieces, Jim and his team built the machines from the ground up, making tweaks to enhance their reliability.

After years of success, Jim was able to retire from the business, but metalworking is still in his blood. Now he considers himself a hobbyist – working on all sorts of metal projects in his 60 by 80 foot ‘hobby’ shop.

And his tool of choice? The new Thermal Dynamics® CUTMASTER® 52 True Series plasma cutting system.

“It cuts so smooth and the 1Torch is comfortable to use. Makes me want to keep working all day long.”

“I’M STILL BUILDING THINGS. AND THERMAL DYNAMICS KEEPS IT FUN.”

Most hardfacers should be extremely interested in newly improved chrome carbide, tungsten

carbide and cobalt based wires. All three have varying cost and performance benefits and are designed to meet hardfacers’ specific needs.

The first breakthrough involves the Stoody® 964 and 966 open arc and gas shielded wires. These iron based hardfacing wires offer 64 and 66 Rockwell C scale hardnesses while not exhibiting the normal cross checks seen in chromium carbide deposits. They are available in various packages and diameters, and have quickly filled a niche in such applications as shredding tires and hardfacing agriculture parts.

The Stoody 160/160D/160DM series of wires incorporate tungsten carbide in a nickel matrix. These wires are used in the most extreme wear applications. The large and small diameter wires are used on the inside diameter of pipe, dredging teeth and oil field tools. Their performance can be altered by changing the type of carbide used in the wire.

Finally a product that needs no introduction that has been upgraded is the Stoodite® cobalt line of gas shielded wires. A very popular product for years, the 6-M, 21-M, 12-M and 1-M alloys are used in

applications such as banbury rotor blades, plastic extrusion screws, and fluid control valves. The discriminating user will find lower smoke, spatter and a more fluid weld pool versus the other competitive alloys in the market place.

Ask your Thermadyne representative for a copy of the new Stoody Hardfacing and High Alloys Guide (Form No. 2102A) that includes Stoody 964 and 966 open arc and gas shielded wires, Stoody 160 tungsten carbide nickel matrix products, the Stoodite cobalt line of gas shielded wires and Stoody’s full array of alloys for hardfacing and joining. This guide is a resource one cannot be without. It illustrates application photos, packaging, part numbers, and parameter information.

Stoody is a global leader in the design and manufacture of hardfacing and joining welding electrodes used to combat various types of wear and corrosion. Its extensive family of products includes iron, nickel, cobalt, tungsten carbide and vanadium carbide based alloys. Some of the major industries Stoody serves are power generation, mining, construction, railroad, steel, foundry, oil and gas production and exploration, as well as the pulp and paper industry.

Stoody Meets Hardfacers’ Needs with Three Newer Product Breakthroughs

The Stoody Hardfacing and High Alloy Product Selection Guide includes the latest alloys, product

descriptions with part numbers, application photos that demonstrate the varied potential uses for the products. The guide is divided into easy-to-read sections dealing with coated electrodes and bare rods, open-arc and gas-shielded wires, submerged arc wires, and high alloy joining and cladding. Topics such as metal to metal wear, metal to earth for moderate to severe impact and moderate to severe abrasion, metal

to earth for extreme abrasion and low impact, and abrasion accompanied by corrosion and/or high temperatures are all covered.

Arcair® has long been considered an arc gouging industry leader in the fields of fire and rescue,

underwater construction and demolition, fabricators, foundries, and even the military. Arcair offers a brand of product choices from value driven to professional quality and is proud to have their products once again validated by these recent tests.

The wide-ranging gouging needs of fabrication plants, shipyards, railroads and farms are being successfully met with Arcair® Extreme® gouging torches, including Angle-Arc® manual gouging torches, straight handle manual gouging torches and the Tri-Arc® foundry gouging torch.

Our Arcair gouging torches have been taken to the extreme level with many new design features and improvements. Extreme torches feature a new four-barrel air nozzle design that optimizes air flow to the arc to efficiently clean slag from the groove edge. Optimized air flow allows operation in areas where noise cannot exceed 115 decibels while achieving acceptable grooves at lower air pressure and flow. Improved electrical conduction decreases heat build up in the cable and torch while superior outer cable cover materials improves cable life in harsh environments and resist breakdown from heat exposure.

The Arcair Extreme family of gouging torches features four Angle-Arc torches, two straight handle torches and a single Tri-Arc torch with three head options. The four Angle-Arc torch models are designated for either light, medium, heavy duty or extra heavy-duty performance. Straight handle torches are specified for either medium or extra heavy-duty tasks.

The Tri-Arc torch can be equipped with any one of three interchangeable torch heads, including those recommended for defect removal, padwashing and general purpose usages.

Extreme Angle-Arc gouging torches and Extreme straight handle gouging torches speed up weld removal, backgouging, edge preparation, defect repair and many other metal removal jobs. They are ideal for almost all metals with little or no deformation because the heat input is so low. If saving time and money are issues with a gouging task, Angle-Arc and straight handle torches can provide the solution.

The Extreme Tri-Arc foundry gouging torch offers one body that accepts three types of heads so that a combination can be tailored to best fit a specific

application. Equipped with the proper head, the Tri-Arc torch speeds up padwashing, removes defects in castings, and generally cleans a casting of fins, nails and other unnecessary metal. Tri-Arc is ideal for users who prefer to eliminate the need for several different types of torches, not wanting the hassles and confusion associated with stocking and supplying several torch types and related parts. This is the original triple purpose torch known worldwide as an Arcair staple.

“The K4000 Extreme Angle-Arc Manual Heavy Duty Gouging Torch has been a great seller for us,” says a spokesman for the Arcair brand. “With a high quality cable that offers high heat and abrasion resistance, and overall rugged construction, it performs well in the harshest of environments.”

Arcair also designs and manufactures a line of automatic gouging systems for high speed, and high quality metal removal. These units utilize the proven N6000 gouging head and a variety of travel systems that allow track mounted or plate guided applications that are ideal for ‘J’ and ‘U’ groove joint prep with low heat input to minimize plate distortion.
