IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Dope Testing - Horses

Please note that if your horse has received/or is receiving veterinary treatment you should check that any substances prescribed will not result in a positive dope test and/or that the banned substance is withdrawn from the horses system before competing again under British Dressage rules. Details regarding banned substances for horses are shown on pages 98-100 of the British Dressage rule book.

Random dope testing is carried out at National competitions at all levels from Prelim- Grand

Prix. If you are in any doubt whether a substance is banned or the length of withdrawal required, please send a list of all of the active ingredients in the substance to [email protected] for further advice.

Dope Testing – Humans

Please note that human dope testing can be carried out at British Dressage competitions.

Please check http://www.didglobal.com to ensure you are not taking any substances that would result in a positive test If you are taking a banned substance please contact Ruth Tyler at the British Dressage office for information regarding therapeutic exemption.

Focus on a Northern Rider

Kathryn Wheelock – PARA rider

How/when did you start riding?

I think I was about seven years old and my sister Ali had her own pony so naturally I became

interested in horses as well. Ali was a member of the Ryburn Valley Pony Club and I followed

in her footsteps – my first pony was Ginger who was a 12hh cheeky Welsh roan but gave me

lots of fun. I’m 32years old now so have been riding for over 25 years and it has become a big

part of my life. I have mild cerebral palsy which means that my left and right side do not work

well together and I have poor fine co-ordination as well as a learning disability. So in the early

days of riding progress was slow and no-one thought I would ever get too far let alone ride a

dressage test.

What have been your high points so far?

Well as some people may know I am a member of the Irish Senior Paralympic dressage squad and

now ride in Paralympic Dressage competitions for Ireland so recent high points would include;

1. Being selected to ride in the Irish team at the World Championships at Hartpury in 2008 and achieving 11th and 9th places against the best in the World – I never dreamed I could do so well. There were 35 competitors in my class.

2. Having the highest Paralympic ranking of all the Irish riders.3. More recently hearing the Irish National Anthem being played for my equal first place in the

Grade III championship test at the recent International at Hartpury – I felt very proud indeed.

And low points?

Hearing that I had not made the final cut as the only Irish rider at the Hong Kong Paralympics –on the other hand I suppose knowing that I had a very good chance of going to the Paralympics

could be considered a high point!

What do you like most about riding horses?

As far as riding goes I feel equal with everyone and better than many once I get on a horse –my disability really doesn’t matter once I am riding – the judges are looking at my ability to perform a dressage test. My trainers just treat me like everyone else and treat me as able bodied.

Dislike?

Horrible wet weather – when the horses all come in wet through and I have to hang up soaking wet and muddy rugs.

Most of all I think would be falling off – I think it hurts my pride more than anything!

Name your favourite horse to date and why

I think it has to be Indi (the schoolmaster I own now) because he has taught me so much and I have absolute confidence that he will always do his best for me – any mistakes are mine!

My young horse Taurus III (Trevor) has a lovely temperament and has lots of character so I would like to think he will become my favourite horse in the future.

I love them both to bits so it is really difficult to choose.

Which riders do you most admire?

I admire Hannah and Becky (Moody) a lot because they are very talented and have got where they are through hard work and determination.

I also admire a number of the Paralympic riders but would pick out Debbie (Criddle) who has always supported and encouraged me and more recently Simon (Laurens) – we watch these two ride a lot as they are both Grade III riders and would be riding for GB at Internationals – in

theory opposition but in reality very supportive! They are both very talented riders and I hope they do well in Hong Kong.

What future plans with horses have you got?

One thing I try to do is make all the plans (aims) realistic. I had several major aims this year:

1. To achieve good results at Internationals – In Belgium I achieved a 3rd and 4th place and at Hartpury two 2nds and an equal 1st – these were both 3* Internationals. In my freestyle at Hartpury I achieved nearly 73%.

2. To get into the KBIS final for Disabled Riders at the BD Nationals for the 10th year in succession – managed to do that.

3. To ride to a high standard in able bodied elementary tests – have been placed in virtually every test I have done and have several 1st places.

4. To be selected to ride for Ireland at the Paralympics - as you know this last aim was not achieved – sad but I can’t wait to watch it on the TV (7th to 11th Sept.)

So for the future:

1. Keep working hard with Trevor to build up the relationship and hence myconfidence – take him to lots of different places and give him a chance to see as much as possible.

2. Continue to ride in able bodied dressage and practise in long arenas.

3. Gain a place in the Irish team for the Europeans in Norway 2009, the World Champs. In Kentucky 2010 and of course the Paralympics in London 2012 – all realistic aims!

A funny story!

Well it didn’t make me laugh immediately. We were in Austria at a Paralympic qualifier and I

was riding a lovely horse we had loaned called Elizadolittle in the freestyle. Near the end of the test I made a mistake which caused me to be on the wrong rein but I continued my test and did my salute on the centre line only to realise that I was facing the wrong way. Five judges fell out of their judges boxes and got in a huddle to check the rules - do you need to face the judges to salute? – Unfortunately yes you do! We all laughed a lot about it later and I won’t do it again!
