Kirtan with Scott Medina and Friends Date: Saturday, September 20th

Time: 7 – 9:30 p.m. Location: PranaYoga and Ayurveda Mandala

3333 Federal Boulevard – Parking in Rear Space is limited, but if the weather is nice, we will utilize the garden ashram out front.

Feel free to bring a blanket or pillow for your comfort.

Scott started leading evenings of devotional chanting six years ago out of necessity ~ he wanted to chant and yet, at the time, there were few public opportunities to come together in this way. A leader of the Dances of Universal Peace, Scott shared some chants with fellow peace dancers and before long there was enough enthusiasm to begin holding larger gatherings. Since then the kirtan movement has grown exponentially! Scott has since recorded three CDs of original chants, "Bolo" and "Enchanted" and the latest "StarHouse Kirtan Live!". His kirtans are known for their upbeat energy and ecstatic enthusiasm. “We are chanting as a meditation on the sacred through the vibration of sound.” Come experience this enchanting night of ecstatic chant with us!

Fundraiser by donation

Suggested donation of $10 - $25 to Sanga, a 501c3 yoga education non-profit

Proceeds will go to support the PranaYoga Mandala

Hansa, the proprietor of PranaYoga and Ayurveda Mandala, was treated for a cancering experience this summer. Many peer teachers taught and ran the studio during her absence. Yet, funds are needed to help ensure the continuance of the educational opportunities offered at PranaYoga. This happens two ways – attending our many workshops or through attending, by donation, special gatherings such as this. We thank you for your support. Kirtan is a simple call and response chanting. Yet, it is much more. People gather and engage in a call and response of vibratory sounds, enhanced by guitar, harmonium, drums and other instruments. In the vibration of the music, kirtan is an opportunity to let go of the business of the mind and flow with the inner essence and vibration of the moment. Chants are often done in the Sanskrit language. Sanskrit is a language of vibration that impacts the brain waves and energy points (marma) in the body. The mind and body can become relaxed due to the vibrational quality of the chant. Releasing inner tension allows us to explore and open to our greater Self, rather than getting caught into mind stuff. Sometimes spontaneous movement unfolds when chanting. Other times one will experience the calmness of the mind. Each experience is unique to the day, time, life happenings and most important – the chant.

The Yoga Cikitsa program offered at the PranaYoga and Ayurveda Mandala is a first of its kind in the country. Designed for yoga teachers already grounded in the basics of yoga, the goal of the program is to mature serious yoga teachers into the skills of working in the classical yoga cikitsa format. Learning and assigned practices integrated with mentored internship offers students a practical, hands-on approach to yoga cikitsa.

Classically, yoga was an individualized personal discipline developed to enhance personal growth. Our approach to yoga cikitsa is in line with the classical tradition and is not a protocol-based system. Yoga Cikitsa is when a yoga practitioner facilitates the process in a person-focused, consciously chosen, guided application of yoga techniques to facilitate the individual living their life fully physically, mentally, emotionally, in society and Spiritually. Our goal is to introduce students to assessment tools, the application of the vast yoga techniques available and follow through with a client. There is a medical component of the training to ensure your work is a complementary practice.

Yoga Cikitsa: The Therapeutic Application of Yoga Starts October 27th, 2008 – call for more information

the application and pre-assessment form are available online

The Yoga Cikitsa Certification is designed to introduce experienced yoga teachers to the basic concepts of yoga as a therapeutic-based practice. The program is grounded in classical yoga. The program will include:

• basic yoga cikitsa as taught in the yoga scriptures with current day applications, • ayurveda basics and doshic influence on health and wellbeing, • foundations of Jyotisha and the relevance to yoga cikitsa • the practice, application and adaptation of many yoga tools including asana, pranayama, mudra,

mantra, meditation, yantra, Pratipaksha Bhavana, ritual and more, • western anatomy, physiology and the pathology of disease, • skills to assist relating with psychological, medical and complementary practitioners, • practical experience in a clinical setting through case taking, assessment, maintaining appropriate

records, and developing yoga therapy protocols. The program is taught in four 300 hour semesters: Semester One: Foundations of Yoga Cikitsa: Yoga and Anatomy Basics Semester Two: Foundations of Yoga Cikitsa: The Classical Texts Semester Three: Yoga Tools and Cikitsa Application Semester Four: Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and the Application of Yoga Tools Each module has a focus to mature your yoga therapy practice. The first

semester offers skills in basic posture, skeletal and muscular alignment. The second semester focuses on rehabilitation tools and an introduction to the psychology component inherent in dis-ease. The third semester methods integrate the body, mind and Spirit. The fourth module focus includes pathology-oriented therapy. Although this sounds very linear, clinical practice will never be as linear as this writing reflects. We will open a yoga therapy clinic on Monday evenings (January 2009 tentative date). The clinic will be open anyone and there will be a discounted fee. As students, there is a three-step process in clinical mentorship. First you will observe cases being taken by senior teachers. Next, you will assess clients observed by the senior teachers and classmates. Finally, you will take cases privately and present them to the class. Along with the clinic, we are working with hospitals and foundations in the area to offer classes and clinics within medical settings.

The World Health organization defines good health as being a “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely be the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Vote online at www.TheDenverChannel.com/alist My goal is not to be known as the best yoga studio in Denver, but as the best Yoga Educational Center. I feel we have an amazing group of teachers who have unique, personalized yoga wisdom that overflows into the classes they teach at the studio. We are a studio that focuses on person-oriented classes and fun, rather than a group experience. Within this individual-focus a community has unfolded. This makes us different from many of the studios in Denver. Retaining this core value is vital to who we are; it is wonderful to be visible and let people know who we are through this nomination.

Dear Fellow Sadhaks, This has been the most interesting of summers. As many of you know, I was diagnosed with a “cancering experience” in May and spent the summer going through the traditional medical protocol. The experience was very hard on my body, and now I am finding – my mental balance. Allison took over the office, supported by others on different projects. My peer teachers and yoga lovers stepped into the classroom and have kept the studio going. I want to send out a special thank you to: Karin Bustamante, Allison Zuelke, Carrie Searles, Maggie Dick, Dana Huskey, Erin Dowd, Dee Peterson, Robin McCoy, Kat Lester, MahaJyoti Glassman, Patricia Hansen, Jeffrey Schubert, Katyayani Poole, Melissa Chaney, and Stefania Nohavickova. And a special thank you to Allison who has run the office and done an awesome job. Several people gathered to organize a silent auction to assist in raising funds; donations were made toward the many services and items contributed that helped with finances during my absence. The Peace Pole was planted during a special ceremony and MahaJyoti played the guitar leading participants in chants of peace. Another special event organized by Katyayani Poole and her husband Jeff was a sacred Homa. The homa was in my back yard. The day before the event, Katyayani, Jeff, Michael, Linda, Leslie, Kendra, Reece, Griffen, Gloria and Judy came to the house and built the fire pit, set up a tent and adorned the yard. Around 50 people attended. Katyayani led the ceremony and chanting while an inner circle of people placed offerings in the fire, tended by Jeff. The potluck food offerings were enjoyed by all. The experience was awesome. I still have the fire pit in my back yard and a vibrant energy still emanates from the ashes. I have been totally humbled by the love and support of everyone during this time: cards, calls, walking Ganga, teachers stepping in and teaching classes, flowers, food delivered to my home and the hospital – and more -- I don’t know how to say thank you in the way you all deserve to be thanked. Thank you notes have not gone out to everyone yet, but know, many tears of overwhelm through your love have been shed. PranaYoga and Ayurveda Mandala has been blessed with donations offered through Sanga, our affiliated non-profit, during these two events and by others who have given so generously. The donations have and continue to be the financial stability for the Mandala until I can return to work. And, to keep the circle of love, we have committed to donating two goats, a cow and a “flock of hope” through the Heifer Foundation. Thank you for being a part of the healing circle of people that have kept the studio vibrant during the time I have been gone. And, thank you all for bringing light and love and humbleness into my life. We now move on to another season. I am still not working full time, and I will spend more time at the studio as my energy permits. I hope to pass the “wand” of some of the work I have done in the past to others - allowing me to step into exploring, teaching and writing more of the deeper practices – and reviewing lessons from being involved in a medical experience! I am not sure how this is going to be expressed in the future. All of us are working, waiting, and watching as the studio, the PranaYoga offerings, and me(!) unfold as we continue the journey of insight, growth, and change. As we enter the next season and soon the next year, we are still open to the unfolding sharings of yoga – and the desire to serve and bring you all programs and classes that enhance your yoga growth. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, contact us if there is a specific training you would like in 2009. The schedule is in process and our goal is to serve your needs! Jai Bhagwan
