LUNCHEON might not have been. Guests enjoyed a dynamic speaker, retired Army Maj. Gen. Gale Pollock, former acting surgeon general and commander of the Army Medical Command. Members of the Lynchburg Fire Department attended in recognition of their annual “Live Fight Dream” campaign, the proceeds of which are donated to the M.A.A.M. Fund. The Centra Foundation and the M.A.A.M. Committee thank everyone who sponsored and attended the event. A specialized center for patients experiencing a mental health or substance abuse crisis is now open within the Emergency Department at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. The effort is the result of Centra’s collaboration with Horizon Behavioral Health and the Lynchburg Police Department. The Centra Foundation provided funds for the renovation of a new waiting area in the psychiatric emergency department. The center is the first and only of its kind in central Virginia and offers privacy and space for patient observation as well as therapeutic care. The center also will use telepsych capabilities to provide mental health evaluations for patients in the Bedford, Farmville and Gretna emergency departments. “We are already using technology to provide these much needed services to outlying areas, and we will continue to do so in the new center,” said Ted Stryker, vice president of Centra Mental Health Services. The new center was developed in response to the Community Health Needs Assessment conducted in 2012, which identified access to mental health care as one of its priorities.

The fifth annual Love of Children Ball, tobenefit Children’s Miracle Network

Hospitals, honored retired pediatric dentistDrake Covey, D.D.S., on August 29 at theAcademy of Fine Arts.

The evening was hosted by WSET-TV’sDanner Evans and featured photos, large andsmall, of children helped by CMN Hospitals atCentra facilities.

After a scrumptious dinner, exciting raffles,an amazing auction and a wonderful programwith Dr. Covey and dancing, close to $40,000was raised to provide medical equipment,facilities and special services to treat babies andchildren at Centra.

More than 30 community members attended theCentra Foundation’s “Healthy Meals for BusyFamilies” event in September.

This presentation, featuring Centra NutritionServices staff, included a cooking demonstration anda review of tips to create fast, healthy meals. IdaProco, Centra’s chief clinical coordinator, and KimMartin, executive chef, joined together to present atasty and informative program.

The event was part of the Foundation’s series forYoung Professionals, which presents free health-related programming tailored for ages 21-40.

Representatives from Centra, the Centra Foundation, theYMCA of Central Virginia, and Mrs. Rebecca Bowen celebrated thecompletion of renovations at the Robert R. Bowen M.D. WellnessCenter at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital in October. Thecenter offers space for Centra employees to exercise and is apartnership between Centra and the YMCA of Central Virginia.Originally made possible by gifts from Dr. and Mrs. Bowen, thecenter has been recently enlarged and updated. Dr. Bowen, anorthopedic surgeon who passed away in 2013, was a lifelongadvocate for physical fitness.
