The 2012 Subaru Impreza five door is a pleasant looking, versa-tile and smart handling car whose standard all-wheel drive makes it unusual among small cars that typ-ically are front-wheel drive only.

Better yet, the Impreza comes at a competitive retail price starting at $19,045. This base Impreza price is on par with the starting retail pric-es of some competing front-wheel drive cars.

Meanwhile, the Impreza’s top fuel economy rating of 27 miles per gal-lon in city driving and 36 mpg on the highway from the federal gov-ernment confirms the all-wheel drive is not a drag on gasoline mile-age. In fact, the 2012 Hyundai Elan-tra GT five-door hatchback, which doesn’t offer all-wheel drive, has the same fuel economy rating as the all-wheel drive Impreza.

Also worth noting: The 2012 Im-preza is a recommended buy of Consumer Reports, where its pre-dicted reliability is better than av-erage.

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $19,045 is for a base, 2012 Impreza 2.0i five-door hatch-back with manual transmission and 148-horsepower four cylinder.

A 2012 Impreza hatchback with continuously variable transmission (CVT) that a driver operates like an automatic has a starting retail price of $20,045. The 2012 Impreza is not offered with an automatic trans-mission.

By comparison, the 160-horse-power, 2013 Ford Focus five-door hatchback has starting retail pric-es, including destination charge, of $19,995 with manual transmis-sion and $21,090 with automatic. And the 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT hatchback with 148-horsepower four cylinder starts at $19,145 with

manual transmission and $20,145 with automatic.

Still, buyers wanting even low-er-priced four-wheel traction can find the 2012 Jeep Patriot 4X4 sport utility vehicle has a starting retail price, including destination charge, of $18,670. The Patriot, however, has a lower fuel economy rating of 22/28 mpg.

The 2012 Impreza offers a wheel-base that is an inch longer and has updated exterior styling, richer-looking interior, increased passen-ger and cargo space and smaller displacement than its predecessor. The four-cylinder engine with CVT is also new.

The styling is attractive but not as expressive as a Focus.

Inside, the passenger compart-ment looks ritzier than before and the top of the dashboard even has soft-touch materials. Gauges and controls are easy to read and well placed.

Nissan’s flagship, the Altima, is in its sixth year of a refined fourth generation, and the public contin-ues to embrace the American-built vehicle with sustained strong sales. Assembled by Nissan at its Smyr-na and Decherd, Tennessee, and Canton, Mississippi manufactur-ing facilities, the 2012 Altima mid-size sedan combines quality fit and finish, capable performance and a sporty demeanor.

Altima continues to gain atten-tive looks with its strong styling cues that include its distinctive de-sign, an aggressive stance, Nissan’s signature T-shaped grille, exclu-sive Altima-style taillights, pow-erful front fenders, strong wedge character line, forward A-pillars and Nissan-family roofline, small wheel opening gaps, wide track, rear decklid spoiler (an option on my test ride), standard dual power sideview mirrors, dual exhaust fin-ishers and holdovers from a 2010 tweaking: aluminum-alloy wheel designs, and a restyled hood, grille and front bumper.

My Tuscan Sun (a rich red) Altima was mated to a Charcoal leather in-terior (upgrade) and they played well off the unibody corrosion-resistant chassis made of high-strength steel, measuring 190.7 inches long, 70.7 inches wide and 57.9 inches high on a 109.3-inch wheelbase. Ground clearance came in at 5.4 inches and my Altima 3.5 SR weighed in at 3357 lbs. with a weight distribution of 61.9 percent up front and 38.1 per-cent in the rear.

Two engine choicesSome versions of the 2012 Alti-

ma are equipped with a transverse mounted 2.5 CVT in-line-4 engine that produces 175 horsepower and

180 lbs-ft of torque, but the alumi-num block and head front-engine front-wheel-drive Altima 3.5 SR gets its muscle from a 270hp 3.5-li-ter V-6 that pumps out 258 lbs-ft of torque.

On regular unleaded fuel, the 2.5-liter is EPA rated at 23mpg in the city and 32mpg on the highway, while the 3.5-liter V-6 gets a 20/27 rating. My test 3.5 SR was coupled with a 6-speed close-ratio manual trans-mission with dual-mass flywheel. This system reduces rpm drops be-tween shifts to maximize power and economy.

The set-up attained a test average of 23.7mpg during mixed-use driv-ing, and performance was strong for a mid-size sedan despite some pedal-mash delay. Off the line, ac-celeration is good and passing is ef-fortless at speed.

During track tests, my 2012 Al-tima 3.5 SR enthusiastically com-pleted a zero-to-60mph run in 6.6 seconds and galloped the quarter-mile in 14.98 seconds.

A confident rideAltima utilizes power speed-sen-

sitive rack-and-pinion steering to provide confident maneuverability. While understeer was demonstrat-ed during auto-cross cornering, a minor footlift off the pedal can cor-rect the flaw. Braking is excellent for a family mid-size and Altima’s 4-wheel anti-lock brake system with power-assisted vented front disc brakes and power-assisted sol-id disc rear brakes in concert with electronic brake force distribution exhibits secure stopping capabili-ties.

Altima’s independent strut front suspension with coil springs and stabilizer bar, and multi-link inde-pendent rear suspension with sta-bilizer bar doesn’t pamper those in-side, but as a driver, you get more road feel from the system.

There is virtually no high-speed float and the car is aware of mac-adam imperfections in all ranges.

Functional and abundant cabinAltima’s cabin combines func-

tionality, refinement and comfort, emphasizing stylish chrome accents and soft materials, such as padded armrests.

Amenities are abundant and op-tion packages (see below) add what might have been missed. Altima’s instrument panel features a Fine Vi-sion gauge display for precise read-ability and the L-shaped flow of the instrument panel to the center con-sole adds to a driver-oriented cock-pit feel. Roomy, sporty and quiet, Altima 3.5 SR’s interior affords of 40.0 inches of front headroom and 37.1 inches in row two, superior leg-room of 45.0 inches in front and 36.1 inches in the second row, and shoulder room showing 56.4 inches in both rows.
