From its beginnings as a mid-range trim in the Ch-evelle line in 1964, to its pro-motion as the car that re-placed Chevelle in 1978, the Chevrolet Malibu has seen success in many guises.

Malibu has appeared as a vinyl-topped two-tone sedan, station wagon and coupe, while arguably gain-ing its most everlasting fol-lowing as a muscle car. The down-sized marque ceased production after the 1983 model year when it was re-placed by the front-wheel drive Chevrolet Celebrity.

Malibu was brought back in 1997 as a new front-wheel drive vehicle, built on an extended wheelbase ver-sion of the GM N platform it shared with the Buick Sky-lark, Oldsmobile Achieva, Oldsmobile Alero and Pon-tiac Grand Prix.

After a six-year run, it was re-introduced in 2004 as the Chevrolet Classic, built on the Epsilon platform for a two-year stint, during which time it was restricted to rental car companies and fleet orders.

Third time in the line-upSince its re-introduction

as an all-new model for the 2008 model year, the sixth-generation Malibu has been an industry award winner and a favorite among jour-nalists as well as the buying public.

Since its rebirth, its third life in the Chevrolet line, Malibu has doubled Chev-rolet’s share of the competi-tive mid-size car market, and sales on the 2010 mod-el have risen more than 30 percent to date, compared with 2009 sales — sales are not yet in on the 2011.

The 2011 Malibu, manu-factured in Kansas City, Kan., is available in three trim levels: LS, LT and LTZ, and all models have a stan-

dard 2.4-liter E85-compat-ible four-cylinder engine as base equipment.

The LS includes a four-speed automatic transmis-sion and the LT and LTZ in-clude a six-speed automatic transmission. Optional on the LT and LTZ is a 252-hp, 3.6-liter V-6, matched with a six-speed automatic.

The re-designed family mid-size sedan has rounded Euro-lines, fit and finish re-minding us of more upscale vehicles and increased pow-er, performance and fuel ef-ficiency.

Aggressive refinementWith an aggressive, mus-

cular, yet refined, stance, Malibu offers a presence of substance. A visually lower, yet longer, greenhouse and a shorter deck suggest mo-tion, agility and attitude. The body sides are clean and elegant with Corvette cues in the rear.

My review vehicle was in LT trim, measuring out at 191.8 inches long, 70.3 inch-es wide and 57.1 inches high on a 112.3-inch wheelbase. The test ride was drenched in Red Jewel Tintcoat paint, and was embellished with bright accent front fascia, body-color rocker moldings with bright inserts, 17-inch wheels with bright chrome trim and power-adjustable body-color mirrors.

Steady accelerationMy test Malibu’s pow-

er and performance came from a 2.4-liter I-4 DOHC VVT cast-aluminum en-

gine putting out 169hp and 160 lbs-ft of torque, mat-ed to a 6-speed automatic transmission. It was enough brawn to push the 3,421-pound vehicle from zero to 60 mph in a slow-but-steady 9.1 seconds en route to a 16.9-second quarter-mile trip.

Acceleration was smooth in all gears with little kick, and handling was good for its niche. Virtually no yaw or body roll was noticed dur-ing tight, quick turns and the rack-and-pinion elec-tric power steering feel has improved over the previ-ous generation and was true during cornering.

The four-wheel indepen-dent suspension adequately smoothed out road irregu-larities and Stabilitrak sta-bility control, electric pow-er steering assist and tight wheel-to-body relationship all helped create a secure, confident driving experi-

ence.EPA-rated at 22/33 on un-

leaded regular fuel, a week of mixed-use tests came in at 24.9mpg. We didn’t en-counter any E-85 fill-up lo-cations during the examina-tion and were unable to test for performance and fuel efficiency under those cir-cumstances.

Seating for fiveInside, the Malibu cabin

is roomy and upscale, with seating for five, measuring 39.4 inches of front head-room and 37.2 in row two; legroom measures 42.2 and 37.6 and shoulder room comes in at 55.9 and 53.9.

Interior amenities include driver power lumbar, single zone manual air condition-ing, AM/FM stereo with CD player and MP3 play-back, seek-and-scan, digi-tal clock, auto-tone con-trol, Radio Data System, automatic volume, Theft-

Lock, auxiliary input jack and cross-band presets, XM Radio, cruise control, rear-window defogger, power door locks, driver informa-tion center, two auxiliary power outlets, remote key-less entry, adjustable seats with power driver lumbar control and tilt/telescopic steering column with steer-ing wheel mounted controls.

The Malibu comes with such standard safety fea-tures as seat-mounted tho-rax airbags, side-curtain airbags, dual-stage fron-tal, and head curtain side-impact air bags, Passenger Sensing System, LATCH system for children, On-Star, Stolen Vehicle Assis-tance, theft deterrent alarm system, tire pressure moni-tor, trunk emergency han-dle, tire sealant and inflator kit, and anti-lock brakes.

With an MSRP of $22,715 discounted $3000 at local dealerships, and destination

charges of $750 the base car is stickered at $20,435.

My test vehicle was up-graded with the Interface Package ($250) — includes AM/FM stereo with USB port and CD player and rear power center, the Power Convenience Package ($525) — Includes driver 6-way power seat adjuster, remote vehicle starter system and Bluetooth for phone (for se-lect phones), Power Sunroof ($850), Rear spoiler ($385), 2-way advanced remote start ($405) for a drive-off of $22,725 plus tax and license.

In its third cycle as a Chev-rolet line member, Malibu looks poised for a long run.

Toyota’s top-quality repu-tation is tarnished these days because of a rash of safety recalls. But that’s not stop-ping the Toyota Camry from outselling all other cars in the country.

In fact, sales this calendar year of the Camry, a peren-nially popular family sedan over the years, total nearly 190,000 and are up 2.8 per-cent through the first seven months of 2010 compared with the year-earlier period.

I found out why when a woman in a parking garage elevator wanted to know how I liked the new, 2010 Camry she saw me driv-ing. She quickly confirmed she’s a Toyota loyalist and had fond memories of her old, durable Camry. She was driving a Lexus now, having moved up to Toyota’s luxury brand.

She clicked off many posi-tive attributes of the Cam-ry: It’s attractive in a main-stream kind of way, easy to settle into and drive and comfortable to ride in. Basi-cally, it’s a no-fuss car that fits busy households.

And for years, the Camry has been a sedan known as a smart buy because of its popularity, reliability and class-leading quality. For 2010, the “smart buy” label may be appropriate for some new reasons.

EngineA new four-cylinder en-

gine boosts horsepower from 158 in the 2009 Camry to at least 169 in the 2010 model. The four banger also pro-vides improved fuel mile-age — up 1 mile per gallon in government ratings in both city and highway travel for a combined rating of 26 mpg with automatic transmis-sion.

In addition, starting retail prices for base 2010 Cam-rys are lower than those of some major competitors, plus Toyota has been gener-ous this year with sales in-centives. Specifically, the front-wheel drive, base, 2010 Camry has a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including des-tination charge, of $20,155 with manual transmission and 169-horsepower, 2.5-liter four cylinder. With au-tomatic transmission, the lowest-priced 2010 Camry starts at $21,205.

In comparison, the 2010 Ford Fusion, another mid-s i ze fa m i ly se d a n , h a s a starting retail price of $20,420 with manual trans-

mission and 175-horse-power four cylinder. The lowest-priced Fusion with automatic has a $21,295 re-tail price, including MSRP and destination charge. The competing Honda Accord sedan starts at $21,805 with manual transmission and 177-horsepower four cylin-der and $22,605 with auto-matic. But the newly styled-for 2011 Hyundai Sonata starts lower than all of them — $19,915 — and has much more four-cylinder horse-power, 198.

All Camrys come with air conditioning, power win-dows and door locks, cruise control, 16-inch wheels, traction control, electronic stability control and steering wheel-mounted audio con-trols.

InteriorBut I was surprised at the

amount of tire and wind noise that the test Camry, an LE automatic, let into the passenger compartment. The ride was smooth and bumps were kept away from passengers. But the Cam-ry didn’t seem as insulated against outside sounds as I expected.

The 2010 Camry comes with slightly revised styl-ing. So the grille and front air dam on the test car were

bolder than that on the 2009 predecessor, and headlights were a bit larger, though I had to park next to an ear-lier Camry to really see that change clearly.

At the back, the 2010 Camry has restyled taillamps with light-emitting di-odes providing bright brake lights. All in all, the look is neither jarring nor emotive and contrasts with more modern designs as seen on the 2011 Hyundai Sonata.

Fo r a t o t a l p r i c e o f $22,660, the test Camry LE had good-looking fabric seats that held me nicely in place, though the car wasn’t sporty enough for exciting driving through mountain twisties. There was notice-able body sway and weight transfer from side to side during those kinds of ma-neuvers and steering felt a

bit numb.

PerformanceThe lack of a “road car”

feel in the Camry LE, how-ever, did not diminish the pleasing performance of the new four-cylinder engine. It’s larger in displacement — 2.5 liters vs. 2.4 liters — than the 2009 engine. And with twin cams, Toyota’s variable valve timing and new six-speed automatic transmis-sion attached, it worked ad-mirably in city and highway traffic.

A couple passengers, in fact, didn’t realize the Camry had only a four banger under the hood, because accelera-tion was smooth and perky. Torque peaked in the tester at 167 foot-pounds at 4,100 rpm, and provided good “oomph” to get the 3,300-pound car moving at a good

pace from a standstill. The engine sounded confident, too. There was little of the cheap, buzzy sound nor-mally associated with four-cylinder engines that are stressing to accelerate.

The best part was the mileage. The model I drove was rated at 22/32 mpg, and I managed 24.5 mpg in com-bined city/highway driving. Not bad for a car that’s 15.8

feet long and has good room for up to five passengers. The Camry also is available with a 268-horsepower V-6, but mileage ratings drop to 19/28 mpg.

Controls are easy to reach and understand. When I sat in the back seat with the front seats up on their tracks just a bit, I could extend and stretch my legs. The back seat also offered good head-room of 37.8 inches and enough space, widthwise, that three adults could ride without feeling too cramped. The trunk is good-sized at around 15 cubic feet.

Some models of Camry have been among more than 3 million Toyotas subject to U.S. safety recalls over the past year after reports of Toyota vehicles suddenly ac-celerating and drivers unable to stop them. Government officials continue to search for causes, including wheth-er some drivers were possi-bly pushing on the gas pedal instead of the brakes.

Meantime, Consumer Reports has suspended its “recommended” status for the Camry and seven other Toyotas.

The 2010 Camry earned five out of five stars in gov-ernment laboratory crash test results involving both frontal and side crashes.

The Toyota Camry has long been known as a reliable car in its price range, and the 2010 model continues to be a “smart buy.”

Which is cheaper — a monthly car payment for a new vehicle that will almost certainly have lower main-tenance and repair costs than an older car? Or keep-ing on top of regular mainte-nance and repair of an older car, and saving yourself the monthly car payment?

If the numbers are any clue, it would seem more Americans believe holding on to an older car costs less than paying for a new one. The average age of passen-ger cars is now more than 9 years, according to data from R.L. Polk. And the av-erage price of a new car tops $28,000, according to the Federal Trade Commission. What’s more, older cars de-preciate less and often cost less to insure.

Hanging on to a car — and taking care of it — can defi-nitely save you money ver-sus taking on a new-car payment. The key to maxi-mizing your savings on an old car is actually to spend a little on regular mainte-nance. That will allow you to avoid more costly, emer-gency repairs caused by the breakdown of poorly main-tained parts.

Get to know the owner’s manual

Your owner’s manual will provide vital information on your vehicle’s systems, and should include a main-tenance schedule. Take care of the timing belt
