All About Cars

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT: A workhorse that pleasesThe Chevrolet Silverado,

always comes up with com-pelling advertising to excite the truck-buying public, and this year, the 2013 Chev-rolet Silverado 1500 full-size pick-up truck is billed as “A workhorse that’s also up for the getaway.” Its video image shows the truck pulling up a massive tree stump, while the driver makes off with the stump and the prom-ise of a new end table made from the tree remnant.

Not fully redesigned since 2007, but refreshened in 2011, the 2013 Silverado 1500 is built in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and sees only a few additions from last year. For 2013, powertrain grade brak-ing is now included in all six-speed automatic trans-missions. This feature re-duces brake rotor tempera-tures 100 degrees Celsius on grade tests by downshifting transmission gears, thereby reducing brake applications on long downhill condi-tions. Additionally, the ex-terior color palette now in-cludes Deep Ruby Metallic and Blue Topaz Metallic

A truckload of featuresOn the workhorse end,

Silverado 1500 offers a comprehensive array of fea-tures that make it an excel-lent choice for towing and hauling, including: Stabili-Trak with trailer sway con-trol and hill-start assist; tow-haul mode for auto-matic transmissions; avail-able Integrated trailer brake controller; available max trailering package (10,700-pound trailer weight rating) and available rear vision camera.

For those who demand niceties out of their work truck. Silverado fills the need by outfitting its full-size with a range of 17-inch, 18-inch and 20-inch wheels offered; chrome-styled steel wheels, chrome front bumper and chrome grille surround; EZ-Lift tailgate (spring-loaded) ; larger controls and door handles available on the upscale trim levels – these handles are easier to use with gloves; rear access doors that open 170 degrees for easy entry to the rear seat/storage area of extended cab models; pow-er-operated rear side win-dows that lower completely into the access doors; and

a plethora of interior ac-couterments that include dual-zone automatic cli-mate control; available nav-igation radio; Bose premium speaker system with sub-woofer mounted in the cen-ter console; available rear-seat entertainment system and Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity; power-adjustable pedals; leather-trimmed front seat and re-mote vehicle starter system.

Confident exteriorSilverado’s exterior is un-

changed, with a confident, chiseled design and broad-shouldered stance that have defined Chevy trucks for nearly 95 years, Design de-tails include a power dome hood, flared rear fenders, vertically stacked reflec-tor-optics head lamps and Chevrolet’s signature bow tie emblem in the grille. Heated, power-adjustable outside mirrors with auto-dimming and integrated signal indicators are avail-able.

The Silverado 1500 with an Extended Cab fits full-size parameters, as with a short box it measures 230.2 inches long (the long box adds 19 inches), 79.9 inches wide and 73.7 inches high on a 142.5-inch wheelbase for the 4WD. Ground clear-ance is 9 inches and step-in height measures 22.6 inch-es, while the Silverado LT’s base curb weight comes in at 5092 lbs.

Four power choicesSilverado provides four

power choices: a 4.3-li-ter V-6 rated at 195 hp and 260 lbs-ft of torque and a 14/18 fuel economy rating; a 4.8-liter V-8 that is E85 capable and puts out 302 hp and 305 lbs-ft of torque and rated at 13/18 as was my test truck; two 5.3-liter FlexFuel V-8s rated at 15/21, with 315 hp and 335 lbs-ft of torque (one with an alumi-num block and one with an iron block) and a muscular Vortec 6.2-liter that stam-

pedes out 403 horses and a stump-pulling 417 lbs ft of torque and gets 12/18 on gas for a 4WD.

My 4WD LT test truck and its 4.8-liter engine was linked to a 6-speed auto-matic transmission, and averaged 14.6 mpg slug-ging its way through wind and snow during my tests. The track was in awful shape during my tests, but I managed a 9.3-second zero-to-60 mph run and a 17.1-second quarter-mile (hand-timed).

We l l - m a n n e r e d o n the highway, Silverado is smooth on the interstates and in town, and the cabin is relatively quiet for a truck. Steering is more car-like than truck-like and body wobble is at a minimum.

Inside, Silverado is roomy, measuring 41.2 inches of front headroom and 39.2 in the cab; legroom is 41.3 and 34.3 while shoulder room comes in at 65.2 and 65.3. The driver’s cabin and cab are filled with the items mentioned above, as well as driver information center and leather-wrapped steer-ing wheel.

Strong on safetySafety is a Silverado strong

suit, with standard head curtain side air bags, roll-over protection for all seat-ing rows, seat-mounted side-impact air bags for driver and right-front pas-senger that provide tho-rax and pelvic protection, high-capacity brake system with four-channel ABS, tire pressure monitoring system and strong body structure to absorb crash energy and provide a protective “safety cage” around occupants.

The base Silverado starts at $23,590 including $995

destination and freight and moves to $32,610 for a Crew Cab with a short box. My test 1500 truck in LT trim with extended cab and standard box, with 4WD started at $35,895. The In-terior Plus package added $720 for EZ-Lift/locking tailgate, fog lamps, 6-way power seat adjuster, steer-ing wheel-mounted au-dio controls, AM/FM ste-reo with CD player and MP3 playback, and Blue-tooth wireless technology. A power sliding rear win-

dow added $250 and a front 40/20/40 split bench seat added $1095. The sticker as tested came to $37,960, but local incentives could cut that much lower.

Car Maintenance

Know the facts when it comes to oil changesBrAndPoint

With more than 300 mil-lion vehicles on the road today, motor oil is the life-blood of any engine and can help protect and prolong its life, whether you’re driving a compact car, pickup truck or SUV. However, not just any motor oil will ensure the healthy life of an engine and, unfortunately, discounted deals for an oil change may not be such a deal after all.

With consumers looking to reduce their automotive maintenance costs, service locations can be quick to of-fer discounted services to capitalize on value seekers. How can a consumer be sure he or she is getting a quality motor oil and filter as part of the deal? A promise of “up to five quarts conventional oil” doesn’t really tell the consumer much about the quality of the oil being in-stalled.

“I can’t stress how impor-tant it is to be ‘in the know’ when it comes to motor oil changes and to understand that there is a big difference between a value and just a cheaper deal,” says automo-tive expert Lauren Fix, or the “Car Coach” as she’s known around the nation. “If driv-ers choose to have a profes-sionally installed motor oil in their vehicle, it’s a must for them to confirm what that shop is actually pouring into their car.”

Motor Oil Matters (MOM), a new consumer education and industry watchdog pro-gram by the American Pe-troleum Institute, has been established to stress the benefits of quality licensed

motor oils and call onto the carpet those who engage in deceptive practices.

MOM and Fix recommend consumers arm themselves with a simple checklist of questions to help them make informed decisions about motor oil:

Time for a change? The bottom line: Fol-

low the oil change recom-mendations in the vehicle’s owner’s manual. Pay close attention to the oil life mon-itor if a vehicle has it. When the monitor says it’s time for a change, it’s time. Drivers need to pay close attention to their vehicle usage be-cause vehicle manufactur-ers sometimes recommend oil drain intervals based on driving habits.

Do you know what you’re getting?

Your service provider should be happy to supply you with the brand, viscosity grade and performance level of the oil they use before it is poured into your vehicle. It’s also important to ask for that information in writing or on the receipt. Drive away from locations that don’t know or won’t confirm in writing what they’re pour-ing into your vehicle.

Who can you trust? The American Petroleum

Institute certifies oil change locations under the MOM program. Service provid-ers that are MOM-certi-fied have had their qual-ity control procedures independently audited and have made the commitment to always tell their custom-ers exactly what oil is going into their cars.

Does the oil meet the per-

formance level recommend-ed for my car?

Motor oil matters. Any motor oil poured into a ve-hicle should meet the level of performance recom-mended by the vehicle manufacturer in the owner’s manual. For many vehicles, manufacturers recommend oils that comply with the latest ILSAC (Internation-al Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee) or American Petroleum Insti-tute standards. The Ameri-can Petroleum Institute independently audits and li-censes motor oils that meet its standards. Licensed oils carry the American Petro-leum Institute’s Starburst or Donut certification marks as a representation and war-ranty that these oils meet the institute’s standards.

Getting a full change?Make sure the oil change

includes a fresh filter. Your owner’s manual likely rec-ommends a particular type

of oil filter, so make sure the right one is included with your oil change.

Not sure how to find an MOM-certified oil change location in your area?

Consumers can find a MOM-licensed location near them by visiting www.Mo-torOilMatters.org or look-ing for the MOM mark. This website is a great resource to find more information about quality motor oil and how it helps protect your vehicle. MOM is also watching out for the “bad guys” and con-sumers are encouraged to confidentially report any oil marketer, distributor or ser-vice location that they sus-pect is misrepresenting the quality of the oil being mar-keted, supplied or installed. Just go to the MOM web-site and click on the Report Abuse button. Be sure to also check them out on Facebook and Twitter (@motoroil-matters) for the most recent updates and news.

Save a bundle by bundling insuranceBrAndPoint

B u n d l i n g i n s u ra n c e products with one com-pany — and scoring cheap-er premiums as a reward — isn’t a new concept. But, according to a recent study by J.D. Power and Associ-ates, not only is bundling still popular among con-sumers, it also results in higher customer satisfac-tion.

The study found that nearly 60 percent of cus-tomers bundle auto and homeowners policies with the same insurer. When customers need additional products — such as mo-torcycle, boat and life in-surance — 77 percent of them choose to bundle. The study notes that in-surance bundlers also tend to be more satisfied with their insurers overall, not just with the premium dis-counts they’re getting.

Charles Valinotti, head of underwriting and prod-uct with insurer QBE, says bundling insurance poli-cies offers other benefits besides lower premiums.

“ C u s t o m e r c o n v e -nience is one advantage,” says Valinotti. “It’s easier to manage insurance poli-cies when you don’t have to work with multiple in-surers. And if you have a claim, you just need to call one company.”

Bundling might also give you an edge when you file a claim. Valinotti says in-surance companies are in-terested in keeping your

business and will be open to renewing policies when there’s a loss — unless it’s something extreme.

How can you get the big-gest bang out of your in-surance bundle? Valinotti suggests:

• Take a look at all your i n s u ra n ce p o l i c i e s. I f they’re not with the same insurance company, you could be losing as much as 25 percent in bundling discounts on each car, as well as on your homeown-ers policy. Think about in-cluding your life insurance, as well, which could result in another 2 to 5 percent in savings.

• Consider adding an umbrella policy. If you own your home, an umbrella policy gives you extra li-ability protection on your home and car, and might earn you even more dis-counts to your homeown-ers and auto insurance.

• Research options for renters. If you don’t own your home, bundling may still be an option. Look into bundling a renters policy with your car insurance, which might result in as much as a 20 percent dis-count on your auto cover-age. Because renters insur-ance is inexpensive, it may almost pay for itself by savings through bundling.

• Investigate bundling with business policies. If you have a business, find out whether bundling your business policies will qual-ify you for discounts on your personal insurance.

Replacing the flagship Acura RL sedan this year, the RLX even has its own driv-ing experience that comes from a new suspension and new all-wheel steering sys-tem that electronically ad-justs toe-in and toe-out at the rear tires for improved tracking in curves and cor-ners.

Designed by the man who helped craft the NSX sus-pension and who formerly worked on Honda’s Formula 1 race team, the new, stan-dard Precision All-Wheel S te e r ( P-AWS) sys te m makes the RLX feel as if it’s directly dialed in with the driver.

Also notable: Combined city/highway fuel economy for the RLX is more than 24 miles per gallon and bests Infiniti, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and BMW competi-tors.

The RLX’s direct injection V-6 comes standard with Variable Cylinder Manage-ment that automatically deactivates some engine cylinders when they’re not needed, thus saving gaso-line.

Though it has the same overall length as the mid-size RL, the RLX has sur-prisingly generous rear-seat legroom — 38.8 inches — which surpasses that in the Infiniti M and Mercedes E-Class sedans.

In addition, the RLX of-fers new safety features, in-cluding a system that gently steers the car back into its lane if it detects wandering over the center line. This works only if there is lane marking that is detectable by the system.

M e a n t i m e , a d a p t i ve cruise control with Slow Speed Follow can bring the car to a full stop in certain circumstances if the RLX is headed for the rear-end of

a stopped vehicle in front of it.

But the RLX, like its RL predecessor, is front-wheel drive, rather than the rear-wh e e l d r ive t h a t so m e sporty luxury sedan purists prefer.

Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price is up only $250 from its prede-cessor Acura RL.

A base RLX has a starting retail price, including des-tination charge, of $49,345. All RLX models come with a 310-horsepower V-6 and a six-speed automatic trans-mission with paddle shift-ers. The RLX also is the first top Acura sedan to include jeweled-look, light-emit-ting diode headlights.

Other standard equip-ment includes leather-trimmed seats and stitched leather instrument panel cover, moonroof, push-button start, keyless entry, three-zone climate control, Acura/ELS premium au-dio system with 10 speak-ers, Bluetooth connectivity, two sizable display screens in the dashboard and a rear-view camera.

B u ye rs c a n m o ve u p through four trim lev-els to add navigation, lane keeping, a new Krell audio system with 14 speakers, sunshades and ventilated seats.

In comparison, the start-ing MSRP, including des-tination charge, for a rear-wheel drive 2013 Infiniti M37 is $49,605. The M37 has a 330-horsepower V-6 and seven-speed automatic, but the base audio system has six speakers and dual, not three-zone, climate control is standard. The M37 also comes with high-intensity discharge headlights, rather than LED lights.

While the federal govern-ment fuel economy ratings for the RLX are 20/31 mpg for city/highway travel, the mid-size M37 is rated at 18/26 mpg.

Another competitor, the Lexus LS 460, has a starting retail price of $72,885 and comes with a 386-horse-power V-8 and eight-speed automatic transmission.

Classified as a mid-size se-dan, the LS 460 is rated at 16/24 mpg in city/highway driving by the federal gov-ernment.

The RLX still has some of the heavy Acura “helmet shield” design on its nose. But it’s mild, and the flow-ing lines on the sides and strong rear end give the car a luxury appearance.

The interior of the top-of-the-line RLX with Ad-vance package was top-notch in fit and finish, with small gaps between trim pieces and everything lined up perfectly.

This RLX included ad-ditional acoustic glass that helped keep the interior so quiet, front-seat passengers conversed in light tones.

P-AWS wasn’t notice-able until the driver went around a curve at good speed and discovered how stably — maybe the word is magically — the 16-foot-long RLX tracked through.

The system provides more stable handling on slippery surfaces, too.

The most fascinating as-pect during the test drive, perhaps, was how little the

steering wheel had to be turned to keep the car on track in the curves and how balanced the sizable RLX felt.

Indeed, on mountain switchback roads, the RLX remained firmly planted and was so tenacious, its back-and-forth motions from one curve to the next created some carsickness for the driver.

The lasting impression: How the RLX molds itself to the driver’s capabilities and habits, rather than forcing the driver to learn the car.

It’s true the 3.5-liter V-6 is single overhead cam and only produces 310 hors-

es and 272 foot-pounds of torque at 4,500 rpm. This is less than what many com-petitors deliver. But the RLX is some 160 pounds lighter than its predeces-sor RL, and the test RLX felt plenty powerful, even if power delivery wasn’t race-car instantaneous.

Unleaded premium is the recommended fuel, so a fil-lup of the 18.5-gallon tank these days could cost more than $72.

Then again, with an aver-age of 24.3 mpg during the test drive on mostly coun-try roads and some high-way travel, the RLX’s range on a single tank was a good

450 miles.The sweeping design of

the dashboard away from passengers gave an airy feel to the interior.

But seat cushions could be a tad longer to better ac-commodate long-legged passengers, and the two display screens take some getting used to.

There are no 2013 RLs as the RLX is arriving now in showrooms as an early 2014 model.

Later this calendar year, Acura will introduce a gas-oline-electric “sport” hy-brid version of the RLX that promises to generate more than 370 horsepower.

Classic Cars

1910 Model F, hardware store are Michigan family’s legacy

by JOHN CARLISLEdetroit Free Press

DETROIT — A lot of the old-timers know it’s still back there somewhere, hid-den in darkness.

Now and then, some of them work up the nerve to ask for a peek at it. And if the owner is around, they just might get the chance to see a piece of history in more ways than one.

They’re the longtime cus-tomers of Reindel’s True Value Hardware in Fraser, a 115-year-old store owned by a single family since it was founded. If the regulars aren’t here for the nostal-gia behind that longevity, or for something as practical as a specific tool, they come to see the old car that they hear so much about.

It’s a 1910 Model F Road-ster — an antique vehicle briefly produced by Inter-national Harvester, which was known back then most-ly for the farm equipment it manufactured. The compa-ny decided to dabble in the burgeoning car industry, when auto companies were springing up like weeds af-ter a rain and dozens of them competed for money and attention. The Model F Roadster was International Harvester’s foray into the car market.

“Everybody had their own ideas how to make cars back then,” said Charlie Reindel, the 61-year-old owner of the hardware store and the vintage vehicle kept inside it.

He has been told his is one of a handful of these mod-els left in the world, and af-ter years of babying, it’s not much different from when it rolled off the assembly line.

Every square inch of it fea-tures some peculiarity. The frame is wood. The fittings are solid brass. Kerosene lamps flank the windshield and fuel the taillights, which are sheathed in thick red glass. The license plate, its original from 1910, is made of porcelain. The thick tread on the tires spells out the words “non-skid” over and over. The carbide headlights are powered by carbon pel-lets and water, like a min-er’s helmet, and they mix to form acetylene gas, which creates a bright light, mak-ing the housing dangerously hot to touch.

“When they heat up, you don’t want to put your hand on them,” he said with a laugh.

Reindel isn’t a car collec-tor who saved for years to buy this model and show it off in car cruises. This was his grandfather’s car,

one the old man bought brand new a century ago for $1,200 so he could deliver tools around town from his little hardware store.

It’s a family car in the tru-est sense of the word.

The hardware store was passed down to him the same way. His grandfather started the business in 1898, in a little shack across the street, before building his own place in 1925 on the corner where it still sits.

Business isn’t bad now-adays, Reindel said, but it was better when nearby Groesbeck was lined with hundreds of machine shops that were longtime cus-tomers. Many of them were wiped out by the recession. The growth of big-box hardware stores has taken its toll, too. But Reindel’s still gets enough customers who like going to an old-fashioned corner hardware store.

“A lot of people like the personalized service we have, and somebody who can talk to you who actually knows what they’re talking about,” Reindel said.

And enough people are eager to see if that car is still around, too. “A lot of the older guys, they still ask, ‘Is it still there? Do you still have it?’ “ said Karen John-son, herself almost family

after working here for over three decades, since she was 17.

Though it’s usually in its protective cocoon at the store, Reindel sometimes takes it out to car shows at Greenfield Village or at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, or to show the ex-cited guys in the beer tent at the Lions Club Festival ev-ery summer.

Sometimes, just for fun, he’ll take it on a run to the gas station for cigarettes, drawing stunned looks from everyone pumping gas into their comparatively un-interesting vehicles. And when Reindel turns the key and people hear the unusual sounds the engine makes, they swarm.

“They’ve never seen any-thing like it,” said Al Roy, 54, a longtime employee. He often tags along with Rein-

del when he takes the car out. “Then when they hear it run, they’re like, ‘Whoa!’ “

If someone asks to see it, in those quiet moments when the walk-in traffic ebbs, Reindel proudly shows it off. It’s not just history, he said. It also represents his personal history, something

from the past that, like the store where it’s kept, he’s been entrusted to take care of.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun,” he said. “Usu-ally people buy a car from somebody else and work on it. For it to be in the fam-ily that long is really pretty special.”
