2012 Hyundai Genesis R-Spec

R-Spectrim adds muscle to luxurySince it was introduced

to U.S dealerships for the 2009 model year, the Hyun-dai Genesis has joined the two automotive extremes of luxury and affordable. In the upscale sedan niche, Hyun-dai does luxury well and it has added muscle to its formula this year, with the launch of the R-Spec trim.

In the past, Genesis was outfitted with 3.3-liter and 3.6-liter V-6 engines and then moved on to a 4.6-liter V-8. Debuting on the 2012 Genesis R-Spec is Hyundai’s new 5.0-liter direct injection V-8 engine.

New, larger engineThe R-Spec’s 32-valve 5.0

stampedes out 429 horses on premium fuel and 421hp on regular. Torque output is 376 lbs-ft with premium and 365 lbs-ft with regu-lar. This helps differentiate it from other Genesis trims that employ the 3.8-liter engine (333hp and 291 lbs-ft of torque) and the 4.6-li-ter (385 hp and 333 lbs-ft). EPA rating is 16mpg for city driving and 25mpg on the highway with the R-Spec’s 5.0 – I averaged 18.3mpg in mixed-use driving, but the smaller engines do better for fuel economy as the 3.8-li-ter is rated at 19/29 and the 4.6 sees 17/26.

In addition to utilizing Hyundai’s most power-ful engine, The R-Spec up-grades from basic trims by adding or substituting HID Xenon adaptive headlights, 19-inch machine finish alloy

wheels, sport-tuned sus-pension, larger brakes, lane departure warning, tilt-and-slide sunroof, chrome lower body side molding, smart cruise control, Lexicon 17-speaker Discrete audio sys-tem, navigation system with 8-inch display, power and heated front seats and cooled driver seat. R-Spec is limited to three exterior colors and black interior and comes with Hyundai’s new 8-speed automatic transmission.

Exterior tweaksThe entire Genesis line

was refreshed for 2012 with a revised grill, more aggres-sive front fascia with larger intake openings, LED head-lamp accents, new tail lights and new wheel design. Oth-er visible improvements in-clude dark chrome head-lamp inserts, sportier rocker panel design, folding mir-rors with integrated puddle lamps, new, brushed alu-minum finish window sur-round, and a redesigned rear fascia with integrated dual asymmetrical exhaust tips.

Built with high tensile steel unibody construction, my test Spec-R was bathed in rich, Black Noir Pearl body paint, mated to a Jet Black interior. Genesis mea-sures 196.3 inches in length, 74.4 inches in width and 58.1 inches in height on a 115.6-inch wheelbase. Gen-esis weighs in at 4,147 lbs for the R-Spec version.

Driving enhancementsB u t t h e p e r fo r m a n ce

highlights for theR-Spec center around the new en-gine. The rear-wheel-drive Genesis powers up with a push-button start. Its quiet engine engages quickly and efficiently and obeys when called upon. It passes with-out objection and while the sport-tuned suspension provides good road feel for drivers, passengers find it rough and unsophisticated. The front suspension is an independent 5-link design with SACHS ASD gas shock absorbers, coil springs and 25-mm stabilizer bar. The rear suspension is an inde-pendent 5-link design with SACHS ASD gas shock ab-sorbers, coil springs and 19-mm stabilizer bar.

Electro-hydraulic rack-and-pinion power steering improves with speed and can feel insistent in your hands during some slower-speed requests. Balance is confident at all speeds, but the vehicle floats a bit dur-ing high-speed maneuvers or twisties.

On the track, Genesis R-Spec performed with aplomb, breaking a 5-second flat zero-to-60 sprint with a 4.98 electronically timed run, en route to a 13.47-sec-ond quarter-mile dash.

Inside, the keyless entry

turns on the flood lamps and you find accommodat-ing cabin dimensions, with 40.4 inches of front head room, 37.7 inches of rear headroom, 44.3 inches of legroom in front with 38.6 inches for rear seat passen-gers and shoulder room of 58.3 in row one and 57.9 in row two.

The interior is filled with refinement, convenience and purpose from its sim-ulated wood trim on the center console, leather and simulated wood trim on dash and doors to its adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking sen-sors. Also included inside are interior air filtration, dual zone climate controls for driver and passenger, memorized settings for two drivers, trip comput-er, audio and cruise con-trols on steering, 17 total speakers, 528 watts stereo output, AM/FM in-dash

6 CD/DVD with CD MP3 Playback stereo, Blue-tooth wireless data link for hands-free phone and real time traffic.

Hy u n d a i e m p h a s i z e s safety and Genesis is on board world-class active and passive safety features to help both prevent ac-cidents and maximize the well being of its occupants in the event of a collision. Genesis is equipped with eight airbags — advanced dual front airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and roof-mounted side curtain airbags for both front and rear outboard seat occu-pants — electronic active head restraints and eight ultrasonic sensors located on the front and rear bum-pers. The sensors, along with the rear backup cam-era, help detect how close objects are when parking.

Genesis is also outfitted with four-sensor ABS with Electronic Brake-force Dis-tribution.

The Genesis 3.8 starts at $34,200, the 4.6 be-gins at $44,500 and the 5.0 goes for $45,500. The 2012 Hyundai Genesis R-Spec is base priced at $46,500, the sunroof wind deflec-tor added $95, Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position summer performance tires were $1400 and destination charges of $875 put the final sticker at $48,870.

With sporty styling and standard high-tech fea-tures, the Hyundai Veloster — the automaker’s fourth new car that earns a fuel mileage rating of 40 miles per gallon on the highway — sure doesn’t look like a fuel miser.

No wonder. Hyundai offi-cials want the compact car to attract young drivers.

But the Veloster’s eye-ca tc h i n g l o o ks, i n n o -vative third side door, generous cargo space, 10-year/100,000-mile pow-ertrain warranty, five years of complimentary road-side assistance and a five-year/60,000-mile vehicle warranty can appeal to value-conscious buyers of many ages.

So can the starting retail price of $18,060. This is for a model with six-speed manual transmission. A Veloster with automatic transmission has a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including des-tination charge, of $19,310.

In comparison, the com-peting 2012 Scion tC coupe, which is rated at 31 mpg on the highway, has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $19,305 with man-ual transmission and $20,305 with automatic transmission.

Another competitor in the sporty, affordable com-pact segment is the 2012 Honda CR-Z hatchback, which is rated at 39 mpg on the highway when fitted with a continuously vari-able transmission (CVT). But the CVT pushes the CR-Z starting retail price to $20,195; it’s $19,545 with a manual transmission.

Both the tC and CR-Z come with vehicle war-ra n t i e s l a s t i n g t h r e e years/36,000 miles and powertrain warranties good for five years/60,000 miles.

AmenitiesAs is typical with Hyundai

vehicles, every Veloster has a good number of amenities.

Air conditioning, power windows and door locks, remote entry, iPod and USB auxiliary jacks, a 7-inch light-emitting di-ode display screen, steer-ing wheel-mounted radio controls, cruise control and AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 au-dio system are standard on every model.

Buyers get a complimen-tary period to use the XM satellite radio as well as Hyundai’s new BlueLink telematics system which is being introduced in the Veloster first before other Hyundais. BlueLink is sim-ilar to OnStar in General Motors’ vehicles with emer-gency crash notification, turn-by-turn directions to destinations and electron-ic notification to friends or family about your location.

Also not to be missed: Every Veloster is ready for use of Pandora Internet ra-dio through a passenger’s iPhone. Gracenote voice recognition and music cov-er art also are ready to work with an iPod.

The Veloster, which re-p l a c e s t h e l o n g - go n e Hyundai Tiburon coupe, turned heads during the test drive.

But no one had a clue that the Veloster has an inno-vative third, front-hinged door on the passenger side that eased entry into the back seat. The door handle is hidden in the black back edge of the window. The only giveaway is the gap between pieces of sheet metal.

Without this door, any-one wanting to get into the back seat would have to do what they do in other two-door compacts: Push/fold front seats forward and contort around the front bucket seats.

Fuel mileageThe Veloster’s fuel mile-

age is an obvious selling point. The 1.6-liter, double

overhead cam, gasoline di-rect injection four cylinder meters the fuel to get that federal government fuel ef-ficiency rating of 28/40 mpg with manual trans-mission.

The test car, which had a six-speed manual that shifted well, averaged a commendable 35 mpg in travel that was 65 percent in city traffic and 35 percent on the highway.

Velosters with the six-speed automatic trans-mission have a 29/38-mpg rating from the federal gov-ernment.

The Veloster’s 2,600-pound-plus weight, which is 400 pounds lighter than the Scion tC, helps make the car peppy. After all, the

Veloster’s output of 138 horsepower and 123 foot-pounds of torque at a high 4,850 rpm is mild compared with the tC’s 180 horses and 173 foot-pounds of torque at 4,100 rpm.

BalanceStill, the test car exhib-

ited a nice balance of fuel frugality and happy per-formance in real road situa-tions. With manual gear se-lection, the car had decent zip to merge into city traf-fic, and highway travel was satisfactory.

Sport enthusiasts should wait until summer, when a 201-horsepower, turbo-charged Veloster is due to arrive.

Less than 14 feet long,

from bumper to bumper, the test Veloster maneu-vered nimbly in traffic and in constrained parking lots. The turning circle is a tidy 34.2 feet, so U-turns are no fuss.

There is a firmness, al-most a stiffness, in the ride, and passengers felt road bumps, big and minor. For example, the test car, with upgraded 18-inch tires, sent through to the passenger compartment vibrations and sounds of manhole covers in the roads. The front-wheel drive car rode solidly, however. The body didn’t flex or shudder over bumps as Hyundai made good use of high-tensile steel in the car body.

Note the back seat has two sculpted seats with a small shelf and cuphold-

ers between them. There are only two seat belts back there, so the Veloster can-not seat five.

Unfortunately, back-seat riders sit with their heads under the large glass hatch-back window, so heads can get hot in warm weather. At 5 feet 4, I sat snugly in back, with 31.7 inches of rear-seat legroom and 35.3 inches of headroom. Tall rear-seat passengers might need to duck their heads when the hatchback liftgate is being closed, because, depending on how they’re seated, they may get hit on the head by the descending glass.

The test car had optional panorama roof, which gave an airy feel inside but it re-duced front-seat headroom by 1.8 inches. Back-seat headroom is unaffected.
