Behind the Wheel

Nissan Quest van has unusual touches

By ANN M. JOBFor ThE ASSociATEd PrESS

Do buyers know there is a mini-van again at Nissan?

The Nissan Quest, which had been dropped for a couple years and re-emerged as a fourth-gen-eration 2011 model, is back for 2012 with unique touches.

Seats have special padding and front-seat heaters that arguably are the fastest-acting in the busi-ness. An odor-avoidance system goes high-tech with grape poly-phenol filtering.

There’s no tugging or fight-ing with electronic sliding side doors in this minivan, because they work without fuss. Nissan says the sliding door entryways also are lower than in other vans, which helps youngsters get inside and out. And no one risks a hernia taking a Quest seat out to make room for cargo. The seats are de-signed to stow in place and can’t be removed on a whim.

The Quest even looks a bit dif-ferent from other minivans. It has a noticeably flat roof and styling that makes it look larger than it is.

And in top-of-the-line LE form, the 2012 Quest competes as a decked-out luxury van.

Starting manufacturer’s sug-gested retail price, including des-tination charge, is $28,560 for the base 2012 Quest S with 260-horsepower V-6 and continuous-ly variable transmission.

The top-selling minivan in cal-endar 2011 was the Toyota Si-enna, which has a starting retail price of $25,870 with 187-horse-power, four-cylinder engine and $27,110 with 266-horsepower V-6. All 2012 Siennas come with au-tomatic transmission. The second most popular minivan last year, the Dodge Grand Caravan, has a starting MSRP, including des-tination charge, of $21,830 for 2012. This is for an American Val-ue Package Grand Caravan with 283-horsepower V-6 and auto-matic transmission.

Why ask if buyers know that Nissan has a minivan again?

Despite its unique features, the Quest’s 2011 calendar-year sales of 12,199 were at the bottom of U.S. minivan sales.

Sienna and Grand Caravan each sold more than 110,000 vans last

year. Even Volkswagen sold a few hundred more of its Routan minivans than Nissan did of the Quest.

Nissan’s Quest can surprise drivers. It’s some 16 feet long, but the turning circle is on par with that of a sedan and makes U-turns easy.

The step inside the Quest is ac-commodatingly low for elder-ly and younger passengers, and fixed grab handles at the sliding door entryways are positioned just right to help steady passen-gers getting in and out.

Nissan’s tried-and-true 3.5-liter, double overhead cam V-6 delivers capable power for this 4,300-plus-pound vehicle. Driv-ers won’t compare the Quest to a sports car, but the vehicle isn’t slow and stodgy, either, as the engine delivers a good 240 foot-pounds of torque at 4,400 rpm. In fact, the test Quest merged with vigor into traffic and maintained its pace in traffic without fuss. Throttle response was quick.

The Quest’s torque compares with 245 foot-pounds at a higher 4,700 rpm in the V-6-powered Sienna and 260 foot-pounds at 4,400 rpm in the Grand Caravan.

Nissan only offers the Quest with front-wheel drive, and dur-

ing some startups, the strong en-gine power hit the front wheels with force. Drivers had best keep both hands on the steering wheel at these times, because the wheel can feel as if it’s tugging to one side or the other.

The test Quest, a top LE, im-pressed with its airy and spacious feel inside. It rode nicely on vir-tually all road surfaces. The front independent strut suspension and rear multi-link kept bumps away from passengers, with some vibration coming through now and then.

There is a sense of body mass and weight shifting when the 6-foot-tall Quest goes into curves and around corners, but the ride overall was well controlled and not wallowy.

The interior was quiet except on windy days, when wind noise was noticeable from around the out-side mirrors.

The LE came with a good, 13-speaker, Bose sound system that delivered awesome tunes. But the radio volume button on the dash-board was located around the other side of the shift lever when it was in “Drive” in the center stack and was not visible to the driver. Good thing the radio vol-ume also could be controlled by a

button on the steering wheel. With one, quick lift of a plastic

lever, second-row seats fold flat. Third-row seats go down just as easily after a tug on each release strap. Even with these five seats folded down, there’s a lot more storage space in a cavity in the floor by the back bumper.

Access to the third-row bench seat could be better in the Quest. The two separate middle seats — no second-row bench is of-fered — have seatbacks that tilt forward and then the whole seat slides forward. But it can still be awkward as passengers step up and over the seat tracks to get into the third row.

In the tester, the hard head re-straints in the third row were positioned in a bad spot for me. They locked into place in only one position, which put the pro-truding area of each head re-straint at the part of my head where neck meets lower skull cap. I had to recline the seatback more than I would have preferred so I could reduce the pressure that the head restraint put on my head.

The Quest is the only mini-van on the market with a CVT, which is designed to maximize fuel economy.

But the Quest’s government rating of 21 miles per gallon in city driving and 24 mpg on the highway is lower than the 22/28-mpg rating that the federal gov-ernment gives the 2012 Honda Odyssey minivan with V-6 and automatic transmission.

And, the test Quest LE aver-aged just 16.9 mpg in driving that was 70 percent city travel and 30 percent on the highways.

All About Cars

Full-Size Sedan with sports car personality

The full-size flagship for the Nis-san line is its Maxima, marketed as a “four-door sports car”. Debuting in 1976 as an upscale version of the Nissan Bluebird, Maxima evolved into its own line in 1981 and has been on its own ever since.

Begun as a Japan-built vehicle, constructed and assembled in Op-pama, Japan until 2004, the current North American Maximas are as-sembled at Nissan’s Smyrna, Ten-nessee plant.

Now in its seventh generation, Maxima has been refreshed for 2012 with an emphasis on sports sedan styling, luxury for passengers and a driver’s car demeanor from cockpit to performance.

Invigorated look and feelNissan has invigorated Maxi-

ma’s look and feel for 2012 with a new front grille design, angular rear combination lights and contem-porary 18-inch and 19-inch alumi-num-alloy wheels. The cabin has also had a makeover with a new audio segment display and inno-vative audio/HVAC knob design, modified meter cluster illumina-tion color (white), three original in-side trims -- Dark Piano-hairline, Atlantic Cherry wood tone and metallic-finish -- and a new Cafe Latte interior color.

Outside, Maxima’s styling cues are aggressive, athletic and pow-erful, with a deeply sculpted body/fender treatment similar to that of exotic sports cars, distinc-tive “Maxima-style” C-pillars and high trunk lid, large wraparound L-shaped headlights with “turbine”

light surrounds, 12-LED L-shaped “stepped” taillights, a wide grille, large bumper opening, “catama-ran-style” hood and a dual ex-haust with chrome finishers.

Solidly built with a curb weight of 3540 pounds, the flagship Maxima 3.5 SV is a full-size sedan measuring 190.6 inches long, 73.2 inches wide and 57.8 inches high on a 190.6-inch wheelbase with minimum ground clearance of 5.6 inches.

Utilizing unibody construction, Maxima is corrosion-resistant, re-lying on the use of high-strength steel, an aluminum-alloy hood and 18-inch, 10-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels with a silver painted finish.

Maxima rounds out its elegant exterior with a front power tilt/slide glass dual-panel moonroof, fixed translucent rear panel with front and rear power retractable sunshades, manual folding outside mirrors, rear spoiler and dual ex-haust with chrome finishers.

Broad power rangePower is delivered by a 3.5-liter

aluminum block and head V-6 en-gine that produces 290hp and 261 lbs-ft of torque. The sequential multi-port electronic fuel injec-tion system is mated to an Xtronic continuously variable transmission with adaptive shift control, manual shift mode, drive support mode and downshift rev matching. Premium unleaded fuel is recommended to fill its 20-gallon tank and the vehi-cle is rated at 19mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. A four-day tour of Washington, DC, Maryland and Pennsylvania, in town and on the interstates, yielded an average of 22.3mpg.

In track tests, Maxima didn’t quite live up to its sports car mar-keting, but brawn is abundant in a broad scope and I was able to

push the full-size sedan to a zero-to-60mph sprint in 6.2 seconds, en route to a 14.7-second quarter-mile.

On the highway, Maxima was responsive, secure and confident. The speed-sensitive power rack-and-pinion steering offered mini-mal understeer and restrained body roll while the sport-tuned suspen-sion components employed an in-dependent strut front suspension with coil springs and stabilizer bar along with multi-link independent rear with stabilizer bar, to easily handle road imperfections.

Interior luxury and sportinessThe luxury sports car feel is con-

veyed within as Maxima’s “super cockpit” seats five, albeit five in-habitants under six feet tall. Inte-rior headroom measures only 38.5 inches up front and 36.4 in the sec-ond seats; legroom is 43.8 in row one and a tight 34.6 in row two and shoulder room goes 56.3 and 55.1.

Cabin niceties include tailored, refined interior styling, use of the premium trim materials men-tioned above, 8-way power-ad-justable driver’s seat with manual lumbar support, leather-appoint-ed seats, 4-way power-adjustable passenger seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, steering wheel mounted audio controls, Bose® premium audio

system with nine speakers, AM/FM/CD6 in-dash CD changer and RDS radio function, two subwoof-ers and center channel speaker, Bluetooth hands-free phone sys-tem, dual-zone air conditioning with automatic temperature con-trol and rear vents, Nissan Intelli-gent Key with push-button start, cruise control, “Daytime Illumina-tion” electroluminescent meters with a rotated tachometer so en-gine redline is placed at 12 o’clock, auto on/off headlights, power door locks, power windows with driver and passenger auto-up/down fea-ture; rear window auto-up/down feature, dual overhead map lights, dual rear reading lights and many other amenities.

Perfect safety scoreNissan also puts an emphasis on

safety and Maxima earned a perfect 5 stars in National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration roll-over tests. Safety items that are part of the 3.5 SV include Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones, Nissan Advanced Air Bag System with dual-stage

supplemental front air bags with seat belt sensors and an occupant classification sensor, front seat-mounted side-impact supplemen-tal air bags and roof-mounted cur-tain side-impact supplemental air bags, front-seat active head re-straints and Vehicle Dynamic Con-trol with Traction Control System.

My Brilliant Blue 2012 Maxima 3.5 SV base priced at $34,450. A 7-inch monitor package added $700; the Sport Package added $2100 for lots of tech, a spoiler, heated out-side mirrors, sport-tuned suspen-sion and smoked HID headlights; the Sport Technology Package added $1850 for the voice recogni-tion navigation system and stream-ing audio. Destination charges of $760 brought the final sticker price to $40,055.
