Chevrolet Volt is unique, high-tech drive by ANN M. JObAssociAted Press

The 2013 Chevrolet Volt has a lot going for it.

It can travel up to 50 miles on all-electric power and has a backup gasoline engine for longer trips, is a recom-mended buy of Consumer Reports magazine and adds new features, including a new Hold mode that lets drivers set the Volt for gaso-line-engine operation only, thereby saving the electric range for later in the trip, if needed.

For the first time since the Volt’s introduction as a 2011 model, the black-colored roof and liftgate are gone. Buyers now can get those parts painted the same color as the rest of the Volt body. And Chevrolet added global positioning satellite-based navigation for 2013. It’s part of an $895 option that also adds $495 in optional stereo sound equipment.

Meanwhile, the 2013 Volt earned top, five-out-of-five stars in overall crash protec-tion for occupants during federal crash tests.

But the Volt’s electric plug-in system for charg-ing remains less adaptable to some regular, 120-volt outlets than do the plug-in systems for the all-electric-only Nissan Leaf and Mit-subishi MiEV and plug-in hybrid competitors like the 2013 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid and 2013 Ford C-Max Energi.

Simply, the test 2013 Volt — like the 2011 Volt tester two years earlier — would not charge via the regular 120-volt outlet in my circa 1970s residential garage. It would only charge at the 240-volt charging stations located at a city-owned, downtown parking struc-ture.

The local public utility said I’d need to install a dedicated charging station for the Volt in my garage, at a cost

of more than $1,500. This charging station would en-sure the Volt fully recharges in just four hours.

But the Leaf, MiEV, Prius Plug-In and C-Max Energi charged just fine — albeit slowly — at my garage at home, using the regular outlet.

Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, in-cluding destination charge, of $39,995 for a 2013 Volt is at the high end of non-luxury, plug-in vehicles. As an example, the 2013 Toyota Prius Plug-In has a starting retail price of $32,795. Ford C-Max Energi — a five-pas-senger, plug-in, gasoline-electric hybrid hatchback — has a starting MSRP, in-cluding destination charge, of $34,140. The 2013 Nissan Leaf starts at $29,650.

The federal government and some states provide income tax credits of varying amounts for purchases of certain electric and hybrid vehicles. The federal income tax credit for a Volt is a hefty $7,500.

With a federal government fuel economy rating of 98 miles-per-gallon equivalent in all-electric mode, the Volt is the top Chevrolet in mile-age. But when the Volt trav-els via its 1.4-liter, double overhead cam, four-cylinder gasoline engine, the mileage rating falls to 37 mpg.

The test Volt traveled 30 miles, on average, in all-electric mode before au-tomatically and seamlessly switching to the gas engine.

With this engine power, the tester averaged 35 mpg, which allowed an overall 355-mile range.

Note the Volt’s engine requires premium gasoline. Of course, the whole idea of the Volt is to not use much or any gasoline, and careful planning of trips and use of the faster-charging, 240-volt stations makes this very doable for short-trip drivers.

For example, one way to

the downtown park-ing garage was just 13 miles without detours. So the test Volt went back and forth for days without sipping a drop of gas or tapping a single kilowatt of electricity at home. It just used the elec-tricity supplied by the city downtown.

The Volt also endeared itself by clearly showing on the dashboard each time car was connected to the char-ger exactly when it would be fully charged.

The Volt tester rode on 17-inch, low-rolling-resis-tance tires and had a firm, not plush, ride. Riders felt road bumps, but most were not harsh.

They heard some road noise from the tires, but it was obtrusive only on par-ticularly rough concrete.

The engine became buzzy, the way many four cylinders do, only when it was pushed hard to accelerate.

At more than 3,700 pounds, the Volt felt sub-stantial, not lightweight. In fact, this weight is akin to that of some regular, full-size sedans. The Volt, however, is less than 15 feet long from bumper to bumper, or about 1.5 inches

longer than a Toyota Prius mid-size car.

Passengers inside the car, especially those in the front seat, sit behind a high-tech array of touch controls on the dashboard and plentiful displays and information in the instru-ment cluster.

Much is unchanged. The front seats still come only with manual adjustment. The back rear window pillars also remain quite thick, so driver views can be poor while backing up the car.

Unfortunately, a rearview camera or rear park assist is not standard.

The Volt’s back seat — for four — can feel cramped for taller passengers. While front-seat riders get 42 inches of legroom, there’s just 34.1 inches in the back seat.

Trunk space, though, is a commendable 10.6 cubic feet.

Standard safety features on the front-wheel drive Volt include eight air bags, antilock brakes, electronic stability control and traction control.

2013 Volvo S60: Innovative safety, sportiness, luxury The Volvo S60 was

introduced for the 2001 model year as the Swedish manufacturer’s new-gen-eration luxury sports sedan. Build in Ghent, Belgium, the second generation S60 was launched for 2011 and its sculpting has moved past Volvo’s perceived boxiness to present rounded Euro-styling, a forward-leaning demeanor and a sportiness that encompasses luxury and the promise of perfor-mance.

New for 2013 are Volvo’s innovative Pedestrian De-tection System, Road Sign Information, Active High Beam and Tunnel Detection, several engine choices and AWD options in mid-level trims.

Scandinavian design cues

The Volvo S60 captures Scandinavian design cues, but its sculpture was engi-neered to produce a “Coupe with four doors” profile. The C-pillar stretches sen-sually all the way to the tail lamps and the slim coupe-like roof line is accompanied by a contour on the shoul-ders on either side of the lower body, creating a gentle yet powerful double wave from the headlamps at the front to the tail lamps at the rear. Measuring 182.2 inches long, 74.76 inches wide with the mirrors folded and 58.4 inches high with 5.4 inches of ground clearance on a 109.3 inch wheelbase, the 3560-lb. S60 looks con-fident, stable, sporty and upscale.

The S60 can be specified with a choice of either of two chassis. In the Euro-pean market, the dynamic chassis is standard, while some other markets have the touring chassis as stan-dard with the dynamic vari-ant available as an option. The difference between the two chassis alternatives is

to be found in the damp-ers and the front and rear sub frames. Here the tour-ing variant has a some-what softer setting to give a smoother ride on poorer road surfaces. According to Volvo, during the develop-ment process, the chassis team carved out a holistic solution featuring changes and refinements for virtu-ally every single detail that influences a car’s driving properties. This includes steering, stiffer springs and bushes as well as more damping. All variants of the S60 can be specified with the advanced, self-adjusting FOUR-C active chassis. The FOUR-C active chassis has been modified and refined to suit the dynamic charac-ter of the sports sedan.

An assortment of engines

The 2013 Volvo S60 is available with a powerful 304hp 3.0-liter T6 version, two direct-injected engines a turbodiesel and two regu-lar diesel engines, and each choice has its own power dynamics, performance and economy attributes. Each can be mated to a standard six-speed automatic trans-mission.

My test S60 was powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) engine that produces 250hp and 266 lbs.-ft of torque. EPA rated at 20mpg in the city and 30mpg on the highway, my tests yielded an average of 21.3mpg.

On the track, S60 was slow, but steady, managing a

6.8-second sprint from zero to 60mph and a quarter-mile run of 15.3 seconds.

I experienced only minor turbo-lag and both passing power and uphill strength are excellent. While steering is a bit heavy, S60 handles quick turns with little yaw and only slight front lean, and the quiet cabin is smooth over most road ruts thanks to Volvo’s MacPher-son strut front suspension with coil springs, hydraulic shock absorbers and stabi-lizer bar working with an in-dependent rear suspension with coil springs, hydraulic shock absorbers and stabi-lizer bar.

Stopping power is asser-tive with the vehicle’s An-tilock Braking System with Electronic Brake Distribu-tion and Electronic Brake Assistance.

Spacious interior packed with refinement

The S60 cabin is pamper-ing and roomy. Headroom with the sunroof offers 37.6 inches up front and 37.4 inches in row two; 41.9 inches of front legroom is provided with 33.5 inches for second-row passengers and there is 56.9 inches of front shoulder room 55.2 inches for the back row.

Lacking little in the way of tech, climate, comfort and entertainment features, the S60 interior angles the cen-ter stack toward the driver for focus and control, while refined details fill the cabin.

Paying attention to safety, S60 is a top safety choice with solid construction and anti-crumple zones, a full quota of technological advances mentioned below, front, side and curtain air-bags, seatbelt pretensioners, anti-whiplash head re-straints and a vehicle intru-sion detective system.

The 2013 Volvo S60 starts at $31,900 for the T5 with three upgraded trims avail-

able. The T6 with AWD starts at $40,650 (also in three upscale trims) and the S60 T6 AWD R-DE-SIGN starts at $44,100. My test S60 T5 in Premier Plus (middle trim) added ac-tive dual xenon headlights, HomeLink garage door opener, park assist in front and rear, digital compass, power glass moonroof, keyless drive with personal car computer, power front seat, autodimming rear view mirror and leather seating surfaces, for an additional

$3350. The Climate Package added $700 heated front seats, heated windshield washer nozzles and an interior air quality system. The Technology Package added $2100 for adaptive cruise control with depar-ture warning and distance alerts, collision warning and pedestrian detection with full auto brake and road sign information with active high beam. Blind spot in-formation system was $700, heated rear seats were $450, electronically controlled

all-wheel-drive was $2000 and engine remote start added $499. With destina-tion fees of $895 this luxury 2013 Volvo S60 T5 stickered at $42,594.
