Chairman’s Chat

Greetings. It is an honour for me, to be

appointed as Chairman of SAVVA, - (Southern African Vintage & Veteran Association) - and I sincerely hope I will be able fulfill all the obligations associated with the post. As Council – we thank Dave Alexander for all his valuable input over the past 3 x years, and from my perspective, his and Peter Hall’s guidance during my “so called initiation “.

As the “ new kid on the block “ it has been somewhat of a “ baptism of fire “, which has taken me on a steep learning curve, giving me a deeper appreciation and understanding of the machinations and benefits that our organization brings to all Clubs affiliated to SAVA.

In the short time between September and now, I have been amazed at how many Clubs, have so little knowledge of the benefits of being affiliated to SAVVA. It is always good to take a step back, and assess what we are all about. Therefore it is opportune for me, and SAVVA – to share with you some of the benefits of being affiliated to SAVVA.

Primarily – the Annual Members affiliation fee provides; • Each member – with an Indemnity card, for all Club related activities. • Public Liability Insurance cover – for both the individual Member, and the Club, to a gross value of R 10 million rand – should any claim arise from a SAVVA sanctioned / approved Club Event

• Access to the SAVVA Insurance Scheme – via FNB Insurance Brokers, at preferential premium rates • Dating of Motorcycles and Motor Vehicles – which permits them to be licensed as the correct year model on the eNatis System • In addition – the SAVVA dating will preclude any Motorcycle or Motor Vehicle, registered up to and including 1965, from the periodic Road Worthy Testing currently being implemented by the Authorities Naturally, such affiliation has the prerequisite that the various Clubs subscribe to, and abide by the Constitution of SAVVA, which primary objectives are; • Clause – 2.2.1 : To promote and improve co-operation between the various clubs and organizations in Southern Africa, concerned with the preservation, restoration an use of self-propelled vehicles 20 years of age and older • Clause – 2.7.9 : To do all such other things incidental or conducive to the attainment of the purposes and objects of the Association

In addition to this, there are various Portfolio’s within SAVVA, such as Motorsport, which in association with Motorsport SA, issues Permits, and controls all aspects of competitive motor sport events, as well as issuing Annual Clearance Certificates for all other events or activities Club related.

In essence, each Club is required to obtain an Annual Clearance Certificate in January of each calendar year, which details the Clubs planned activities for the coming

year, by listing the dates for monthly club runs and associated activities. In addition to this there is the specific proviso that the Club obtain a Permit from the SAVVA Motorsport Portfolio – for each and every Regulated Rally being hosted – which must comply fully with the VSR’s governing such events.

I hope this puts a clearer perspective on what SAVVA is about – especially for when I get numerous questions like “ what do get for the fee we pay to SAVVA “

That leaves me to – wish each of you, and your loved one’s – a truly Blessed, Peaceful and Joyous Christmas and New Year.

Should you be out and about, please do drive and ride safely – and especially when on a motorcycle, remember to wear protective gear AND your reflective vest. Sincerely,

No. 114 : Paper Towels .

When you’ve run out of old underpants, shirts, vests etc. and your missus has banned you from using her overpriced kitchen paper towels here is an alternative: Some years ago I visited a restorer’s garage and was most impressed by his large roll of paper towel hanging from the rafters - like a massive toilet roll but twice the width. In those days I tried to find a roll but they were only available from suppliers to garage forecourts – at a price. A year ago I visited the local Plastic Shop and there on the shelf were rolls of these paper towels, at a very low price. I’m now on my second roll and what a pleasure – no more stealing kitchen towels or hunting around looking for discarded old clothing.

No. 115:Tickeys & Sixpences! At a recent club meeting the following question was asked – naturally with a free drink for the correct answer: Question An older member told us his uncle always kept a Tickey and a Sixpence in his cars glove box – why? Needless to say a number of younger members looked at each

other wondering what a Tickey was, and this made some of us feel rather old. Answer : The Tickey was for setting the point gaps and the Sixpence the spark plug gaps.

THE SUNDAY CLUB MEETINGS & SHOWDAYS

Although a vast number of our enthusiasts enjoy these Sunday events and are always waiting for the next Sundays event to attend and are members of more than one club. There are those members in the SAVVA affiliated clubs that cannot attend these Sunday events as they attend the Religious Church Service. This generally comprises vocabulary and culture to those who belong and have fellowship with one another.

This is part of Gods Mission. Some of us can attend a evening Sunday Church Service, but not all churches have that option. If it is a big Sunday Cars in the Park event one can skip the Church Service on that Sunday and still do Gods Mission. Some members never go to Church Service and still do Gods Mission on a Sunday at the club meetings and at the shows.

Sunday events are chosen because it best fits the rhythm of the majority of club members. Active spirituality exists at club level and at church level. Part of Gods Mission is:-

Love (love your members and love what you do). Friendliness Community (in community with our fellow members). Empowerment through education, knowledge and experience (we get from books, members and working on our vehicles). Fellowship

Connected (we stay connected with our clubs and members by belonging to a club). Goodwill Sportsmanship

We try to enact these on a Club Sunday Event.

Such a club Sunday was the Piston Ring Continental Car Day 20 November 2016. The weather good with a large variety of Alfas, Fiats, Porsches, VWs, Mercedes-Benz, Renaults, Citroens, BMWs, Opel, Audis, DKWs and two Ferraris. Something you never see at a club Sunday meeting or a normal show-day. Photos show some of the exhibits.

This story is not meant to discourage the important Formal Sunday Church Service but to show that the Club Sunday Events also do Gods Mission for those who do not like the Sunday Church Service. We should be doing Gods Mission everyday. Readers views most welcome so another story can follow?

John “Hawkeye” Hawkinson‘s Barn Full Of Treasures

Packard, Buick, Cadillac and a Stutz in the Hawkinson Barn find.

We often talk about the eccentric collectors out there that horde cars, never selling, only ever buying. There are a lot of mixed feelings about these individuals, but I for one am grateful for them. Without them we wouldn’t have collections like this! John “Hawkeye” Hawkinson, the owner of these cars, was a bit eccentric but he was dedicated to preserving history as best he could. Sadly, he passed away this past July at the age of 83, leaving behind his home and several barns filled with 43 antique vehicles.

One of those vehicles caught the attention of Wayne Carini, who happened to know Hawkeye when he was a kid. Wayne’s father worked for the Packard Motor Car Company where he met and befriended Hawkeye. The car in question is a 1930 Minerva Type AM with a Hibbard and Darrin body. These Belgian built luxury cars are quite impressive and are worth serious money. When Wayne found out about the car and that it was for sale, he had to have it. So he arranged for a visit to Hawkeye’s estate to film

an episode about the car and the man behind the collection, which you will be able to watch in a future episode of Chasing Classic Cars.

Two views of the 1930 Minerva Type AM with Hibbard & Darrin body.

The story of how John came to own the Minerva might be as incredible as the car itself is! He purchased the

car from a guy in Connecticut, but he couldn’t afford to buy it all at once, so he started making payments. He made the first payment in 1959, each time he made another payment he brought home another piece of the car. He did that until every last piece of it was safely in his barn, which happened to be in ’74. Talk about perseverance!

A 1930 Buick, Cadillac and Packard in a neat row.

While the Minerva is amazing, it wasn’t the only amazing machine that John managed to acquire. He owned several fire engines, tractors, Packards, Buicks, Cadillacs and even a Pierce Arrow or two. I would love to have any of his vehicles, but I wouldn’t mind having one of his Packards or the Minerva. I’m not sure I would put on a fur coat and drive around with the top down in the dead of winter on a frozen lake like he did, but I’m game for trying something at least once!

1914 Stutz, 1930 Buick and 1930 Cadillac V16 in storage.

Things might look a bit dilapidated, but from what Hawkeye’s close friends have stated, his goal was to simply keep these vehicles safe until interest in them increased. He clearly knew one day he would leave this world and the cars would go to new homes, so he left a box of photos, letters and a note in the Minerva to the next owner so that they could find out more about who he was.

A 1930 Buick Model 60 Sedan.

I can only imagine how incredible it must have felt to pull open the barn doors and see these cars every day. If you haven’t ever had the chance to see a pre-war luxury car in person, I’d highly recommend it. Compared to today’s cars, they are behemoths that will leave you in awe. As Wayne put it, “You open the door of a barn like that, and you look at it, and, ‘Oh, my God. It’s unbelievable’”. It really is unbelievable!

John “Hawkeye” Hawkinson before he passed away in July 2016.

They weren’t kept in the best of condition or protected as well as they could have been, but there’s no denying that Hawkeye managed to save these cars for future generations to enjoy! If you ever happen to come across a find like this, we sure would love to hear about it!

OBITUARY - Count Natale “Luccio” Labia

Born in Cape Town in September 1924, Count Natale Labia was the son of Count Natale Labia, Italian Ambassador to the Union of South Africa, and Ida, the eldest daughter of J. B. Robinson. He went to Western Province prep school, then to Bishops for two years before completing his schooling in London. He then studied at UCT, becoming top student in French and Physics, after which he went to Oxford where he studied economics and law. He lectured in economics at Witwatersrand University, becoming deputy head of that department. Later he lectured in Economics at UCT until retirement. In his time he became fluent in at least four languages. As for his cars, the de Dietrich was purchased in London by his grandfather in 1905, the Fiat was his father’s official car - it still has its DC number plates. The AC he bought himself in 1957. I have known Luccio since 1985 when I took over the curatorship of the de Dietrich. He was the nicest, most considerate and kindest person I have known. He leaves his wife Sylvia, daughter Antonia, and son Natale. One of his Maxims was: “Economics will always take precedence over politics”. Len Ward.

MOTORSPORT NEWS CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE/ PERMIT APPLICATION ALL SAVVA AFFILIATED CLUB At a recent National Council Meeting, the decision was taken that it will be compulsory for all SAVVA affiliated clubs to apply for an Annual Clearance Certificate. It is also highly

recommended that any event run under the umbrella of SAVVA holds the relevant permission. Details of how to apply for a Clearance Certificate Annual Clearance (Annexure A1) This should be applied for in January and covers all regular events held by a club eg monthly meetings, breakfast runs or lunch runs. The cost of this is R150.00 for the year. Once-off Clearance (Annexure A2) This is for for any once-off event – a route schedule may be provided but it is not to include times and distance. No vehicle numbers may be displayed for an event run under a clearance certificate. The cost for this is R75.00 per application. Special Event/ Cars in the Park (Annuxure A3) Any special event or Cars in the Parkj/Mall etc. This certificate is a once-off and the relevant council usually requires proof of the SAVVA Public Liability. The cost of this certificate is R500.00. PROOF OF PAYMENT MUST ACCOMPANY ALL APPLICATIONS

Permit Application Permit (Section 18 Annexure A, B either with or without data loggers, C,D,E,F,G.) This application is for an event which includes rallying therefore the route schedule will have times and distance. The vehicles may display rally numbers. All the above needs to be sent through at least 4 weeks prior to the event and proof of payment must accompany the application. Within 21 days after the event, Motorsport requires a list of entries, results and Clerk of the Course (Annexure 1) report in order to finalize and close the event. Please take note of the fact that any vehicle entered on a SAVVA event must comply with our constitution of 20 years and older – No vehicle may be included which does not comply. In addition to this, no trade plates or temporary permits on a vehicle can be accepted. FOR ALL EVENTS IT IS COMPULSORY THAT ALL PARTICIPANTS HOLD AN INDEMNITY CARD. E-mail address is [email protected] and my contact number is 082 773 2923 IN ORDER TO KEEP YOUR COMMITTEE IN THE LOOP I WOULD LIKE TO URGE ALL CLUBS TO SEND THEIR SAVVA REPRESENTATIVE TO THE 2017 SAVVA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING WHICH WILL BE HELD ON 26 AUGUST 2017 AT THE VETERAN CAR CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA IN DURBAN. As in the past the Studebaker Car Club’s Old Car Show at the Smuts House in Irene on 30 October drew a good crowd of exhibitors of exceptional vehicles and a large crowd of spectators.

Peter Gillespie’s 1913 Studebaker Tourer.

The Special invite section was represented by some marvelous veteran and vintage cars – notable was a 1913 Studebaker Tourer, a 1923 Studebaker Roadster (the well-known

Galloping Naartjie), a totally original 1928 Studebaker and many more beautiful “Loss Lig” vehicles of various makes and models.

A Roaring Success: Ford Heritage Day at the VVC Saturday 5 November 2016 Chris Van

Some six months ago, Ford South Africa approached VVC member Mike Leisegang (chairman of MACOSA, the Model A Club of South Africa) and enquired as to the merits of holding a “Ford Heritage Day”, and if so, would he consider hosting it?

Model T Myth: “You can have one in any colour as long as it’s black.”

Mike, the passionate vintage

Ford man that he is, in measured tones expressed that that sounded like a fine idea and that yes, he would be prepared to host the event. Of course we all know that Mike was over the moon with the idea, and then some. It has to be said that the invite from Ford is a feather in Mike’s deerstalker for the buzz around the Model A, B and T community that he has created, countrywide.

Mike summarily arranged for the VVC Clubhouse to be put to work for the Saturday (great to see the venue being harnessed) and then commandeered his flock of MACOSA members and hangers-on to get with the program, even to the point of choreographing the parking display so that the cars would present a timeline that as it turned out spanned over a hundred years.

Mike Leisegang edifying Head Office.

Helped by his enthusiastic wife Lindy and son Jonathan, who operated the family Landy and state-of-the-art Model A Rescue Trailer, the resultant Saturday display was spectacle that would have impressed Ford collectors anywhere in the world. Ford Head Office was treated to some early cars that are normally the preserve of museums and Wikipedia, while we VVC members pretended that this is just what we “do”, you know?

Oliver Gerond-Eanos’ 1906 Ford Model N – the oldest Ford at the show.

Ali van Jaarsveld piloting her beautiful Model

S. “It’s easier to drive than a T,” she says.

When Mike delivered his keynote speech in the clubhouse, I suspect that the Ford employees were grateful for the snapshot history of the company for which they work. Even we Fordophiles learned a thing or two. One titbit that I found

fascinating was to hear that the Ford badge on Model “A”s made in Canada for export to the Commonwealth, was black, so that, at the docks, the customs officials could accord those cars with the correct tax status, versus the blue-badged cars for export to the USA.

“A”s, far as the eye can see.

The big shot from Ford, fresh back from a decade-long stint in Australia, was on hand, on the other hand, to give us vintage folk (no pun intended) an insight as to where Ford South Africa is today. For one, I didn’t know that the home-brewed Ford Ranger is exported to over a hundred countries. Perhaps SA is not all doom and gloom after all. And the marque seems to have a great future.

Model A Fords in all shapes and colours.

After the speeches, the VVC grounds became a veritable fairground, with vintage owners doing the rounds to give all and sundry a “ride in a vintage Ford”. I saw a few near-misses oh my word. Some lads also got a good workout push-starting a flooded “A”, up and down, to chirps of encouragement from the beer-addled gallery.

The catering, provided by Ford, was tremendous and it was great to receive the commemorative t-shirt and the high-quality metal
