Weber Automotive - always one step ahead

Whoever wants to be active in the automobile

industry has to be flexible in daily business.

This applies also for the advances in their own

production. Due to a large order contract in

engine blocks and cylinder heads, Weber

Automotive has set up a new production system

with MORI SEIKI horizontal machining centres.

At the beginning of 2007 the large order came

through, which meant a new production sys-

tem had to be set up. A choice of eight compa-

nies where on the short list. In the end Weber

decided for MORI SEIKI. Important factors in

the end decision were the performance abili-

ties of the NH8000 DCG machines. Christian

Weber explains:

“We were impressed by the driven at the centre

of gravity abilities with twin drive system on

all linear axes and the Box-in-Box construction.

This allows for extremely stable set-up, with

minimum vibration and high-speed dynamics.”

A further strong argument for the NH8000DCG

is the high-speed table with direct drives.

Christian Weber comments further “with such

an important project, technical details are just

The collaboration with MORI SEIKI was so

convincing that Weber decided to bring other

types of MORI SEIKI machines into the com-

pany, for the pre-machining of crankshafts for

example. The MORI SEIKI NT4250 DCG, that

combines turning and milling in one machine,

is an ideal solution, Christian Weber explains

“till now the milling abilities were not powerful

enough. The NT with its complete milling

spindle can set benchmarks”. The company’s

training area has also been equipped with a

MORI SEIKI machine.

Volkswagen and MORI SEIKI – at the Polish site

in Polkowice, where over 600.000 VW diesel

motors from the newest Common-Rail

Generation are produced per year, along with

components such as cams or crankshafts, has

undergone modern technology investment.

With the NZ-S1500 Volkswagen has changed

over to a new manufacturing cell that allows

maximum flexibility in parts loading. From

September 2007 the first machine has been in

operation, and since then a second has been

installed and accepted and in the coming year

another two will be installed.

Crankshafts as well as intake and exhaust

cams will be produced on these new CNC

lathes that are 100% cut-out for shaft machin-

ing and mass production. The compact con-

struction of the NZ-S1500 not only improves

visibility in the factory but also the produc-

tivity per unit area. Once again Volkswagen

has benefited from MORI SEIKI technology

which allows for high quality and return on

investment.

season, Mercedes-Benz HighPerformance-

Engines, Brixworth, Northants designs and

manufactures F1 engines for Vodafone

McLaren Mercedes.

MORI SEIKI’s relationship with Mercedes-Benz

HPE goes back to its early days. Shortly after

the company (then known as Ilmor Engineer-

ing) was formed in 1984, two out of the first

five machines purchased were MORI SEIKI, and

were destined for the manufacture of cylinder

heads, connecting rods and engine blocks.

Now Mercedes-Benz HPE has 30 MORI SEIKI

machines and employs over 400 people. The

company originally chose MORI SEIKI based

on its reputation for reliability and accuracy.

The first MORI SEIKI bought, a ZL25, is still

machining crankshafts on its original spindle.

A MV40 machine purchased in 1989 worked

reliably until recently, and is now waiting to be

re-installed for the manufacture of jigs and

fixtures. Adam Labudek said, “We carry out

regular inspections, and these machines are

within their original specification even after

18 years of use. A number of our machines run

24/7 so the high standards of service and

support we get from MORI SEIKI are essential.”

Mercedes-Benz HPE and MORI SEIKI have

established a technical partnership in which

the two companies work closely together

to develop new machine designs to match the

exacting demands of motorsport. Adam

Labudek explained, “We have collaborated on

a number of machine designs, including the

NH8000 5-axis horizontal machining centre.

MORI SEIKI engineers presented us with an

initial scheme and invited us to comment. For

this machine we were concerned about the

speed of the tipping axis compared with the

speed of the other axes, which were extremely

fast. The new design incorporates linear

motors on this axis which allows all the 5-axis

movements to operate at full speed.

Both MORI SEIKI and Mercedes-Benz HPE

benefit from the relationship by sharing tech-

nological expertise and practical experience in

the most demanding machining environment.
