ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

NOTES: At the time of the recent inspection, this 1964 Volkswagen Samba 21-Window Sunroof Deluxe represented an excellent overall example of this classic German Microbus. As noted on the prior Equipment and Condition pages, and as depicted on the many enclosed digital photographs, this now 56 year old 1964 Volkswagen 21-Window was found to have undergone a professional rotisserie restoration, leaving this vehicle virtually as it was when first manufactured. This Volkswagen features a 1500cc flat-4 air-cooled motor, 4-speed manual transmission, manual steering, 4-wheel manual drum brakes, panoramic roofline windows, and cloth sunroof. Finished in a two-tone Mouse Grey with White color combination, current market and value guides demonstrate the popularity and high demand for this rare and desirable Volkswagen. MECHANICAL Unless otherwise arranged, the Appraiser does not, and will not test drive this vehicle. As such, no deductions are included for operability. Rather, credit has been given for the vehicle reported performing with no operational defects when last operated, except as noted in this report. If mechanical or other diagnostic checks are required to be performed on this vehicle the customer requesting this report must consult and retain a qualified ASE Certified or other specific mechanic trained for that purpose. Unless the availability of an automobile lift or hoist has been previously arranged by the client or customer, a detailed inspection of the vehicle frame, lower unibody, suspension, brakes, steering, exhaust system, lower motor or transmission areas cannot be properly performed, expected or attempted.

Prior to '64, the 23 window Samba had 2 small curved corner windowsin the back of the bus which were deleted in '64 and replaced with a large canvas sunroof on the roof ofthe Deluxe Bus. Today, the 21 window Samba is now the most highly sought after and most collectibleVW Bus in existence. This VW 21-Window Deluxe Samba Bus has undergone a complete rotisserierestoration back to its original condition. It stands today in the best shape of its life. RM | Sotheby's - THE ELKHART COLLECTION 23 - 24 OCTOBER 2020 - Offeredon Saturday

Volkswagen’s Beetle-based Transporter first arrived on the American continent in 1950. Competition

was nonexistent, as there was nothing else like it on the market. Utilizing standard VW components as

its basis, it was at once familiar and easy to maintain, as parts were already readily available. It quickly

became popular and evolved into multiple variations, including the more comfortable Microbus model,

which itself was offered in multiple configurations, including with Deluxe trim and various window and

roof options. The rarest and arguably most collectable of these is the ‘21-window’ model.

The example offered here is identified by its “M-Plate” tag as a Deluxe Microbus delivered to US

specifications, with sealed-beam headlights and six pop-out side windows, as well as a walk-through

split front seat. Beautifully restored throughout, it presents well in year-correct Cumulus White and Sea

Blue, with grey vinyl and mesh upholstery, and typical of the automobiles in this collection, it has been

well maintained both cosmetically and mechanically. At the time of cataloguing, it had recorded 33,808

miles.

The Microbus has become one of those automobiles that no collection is complete without—so good-

natured is it in its appearance and charm that everyone who sees it automatically falls in love with it and

wants to ride in it. This much-sought-after ‘21-window’ model, in gorgeous colors, would be a delightful

and joy-bringing acquisition for the new owner—whether on their way to Cars & Coffee or Woodstock.

SUMMATION OF VALUE

Our conclusion as to the dollar value is based on one or more of the following:

• The overall cosmetic and mechanical condition of the appraised vehicle. • The demand and available supply of comparables. • Dollar amounts indicated by the value guides. • The expertise of the appraiser. • The estimated cost to replace or rebuild. • Opinions of others who have handled similar models in the past, and market similar

vehicles currently.

• Auction results listing actual cars sold or the highest dollar amount bid against owner’s reserve.

The appraised vehicle, at the time of our inspection, represented an excellent overall example of a classic; 1964 Volkswagen Samba 21-Window Sunroof Deluxe. Mechanically, the appraised vehicle, as noted under ‘Additional Comments’, is credited as performing with no operational malfunctions and or driving problems, when last operated except as noted. Additionally, contained in this report might be ‘comparable available’ and ‘for sale at the marketplace’ information. Asking prices fluctuate depending upon the overall cosmetic appearance and condition, originality, the mechanical history and performance, recorded mileage, configuration of powertrain, custom conversions, options and accessories. Based upon the on-site inspection of this vehicle and with consideration for all the information and dollar amounts determined as relevant to this report, the appraiser has established that the Fair Market Value of this vehicle, at the time of our inspection was,

ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($125,000.00)

The Fair Market Value is the opinion of the appraiser, the staff and the management of Classic Auto Appraiser and is arrived at after careful study of information observed or supplied to us that we assume to be both accurate and reliable. As described under both the prior written ‘Assumptions and Other Limiting Conditions’ and the ‘Appraisal Provisions and Stipulations’, we assume no responsibility for inaccuracies or errors.

ABOUT THE APPRAISER:

I have over 35 years’ experience in the Automotive Industry. My experience ranges from hands on diagnostics and repair, rebuilding, restoring and inspecting all makes and models of foreign and domestic vehicles including hot rods. I began going into the shop with my father when I was very young. My father was a foreign car specialist from Italy. I learned the ins and outs from this man. When he came to the US he began working for Toyota then in a very short time owned independent shops and gas stations, this is where I grew up, at the shop. At a very young age I learned all the tools and what they were used for, then spent time in the solvent tank, cleaning parts, learning their names and function. Until I learned, I wasn’t allowed to touch a vehicle. I started from the bottom up as my father’s apprentice, fixing tires, services and assisting. From classic American and Foreign cars to building my first car at the age 13. A 1970 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400, my first opportunity to rebuild an engine, transmission, suspension and brake system along with having the body, paint and interior done and road ready by 16. At 17 I finished High School and moved to Buenos Aires Argentina, where my mother is from, to study Mechanical Engineering. While attending school I worked for a long-term friend of the family also from Italy who owned an automotive repair shop. There I learned more than I ever thought I would about Foreign cars and some American Classics. Renaults, Peugeots, Citroens, Fiats (including the original 500s), Alfa Romeos, Lancias to name a few then onto 1940s Cadillacs, 1960s Ford Falcons and Fairlanes and Chevy Novas. We became quite creative with the American cars as parts were hardly ever available. Those experiences really helped me in the future to think before shooting from the hip when it came to cars. I returned to the US in the late 80s and enthusiastically rekindled the family name reopening independent repair shops. I labeled myself as a Foreign Car Specialist, which I was, yet my love has always been American Classics and Muscle Cars. I continued to make a name for myself. Over the years I worked on Rolls Royces belonging to the Alioto’s, Ferraris including a barn find Dino but the most memorable was rebuilding 1955, 56, 57 TBirds, a 1962 Chevy II, a 1970 Barracuda, a 1970 Plymouth Superbird and numerous Fords from the 1960s.

Continued 2. Some of my own vehicles over the years, partial to complete rebuilds or modified were 1928 Dodge Fast Four, 1949 Ford Bullet Nose, 1964 El Camino, 1964 ½ Mustang, 1967 Mustang GT, 1967 GTO, 1969 Buick Riviera a completely modified 1959 Chevy Apache Fleetside, and most recently own a custom modified 1929 Ford Roadster which sits upon a ’32 frame. I sold my last automotive shop in July of 2015. It was the largest I had owned over the years. It consisted of 10-12 employees at any given time. I was hands on and at the same time trained many apprentices including my son.
