LOW SHRINKAGEUnits are pre-shrunk and stabilized by high pressuresteam curing. Tests conducted over many years bycompetent testing authorities in Canada and the UnitedStates have proved that autoclave curing producesblocks with 50% less shrinkage than units cured by anyother known process.

QUICK STRENGTHThe autoclave curing process completes the curing ofconcrete within the 8-hour cycle, producing units whichwill have an initial strength as high as they will ever be.Conventionally cured units may take as long as 12months to gain their final strength and size. This initialpermanent strength is a guarantee to the specificationsthat quality products will be delivered no matter howshort delivery notice is.

LOWMOISTURE CONTENTInherent in the process of autoclave curing, units aredried to well below 30% residual moisture content. Thisreduces later volume change due to loss of moisture toa negligible minimum. The dryness of the blockproduces improved suction characteristics with mortarand plaster, with resulting improved and faster erectionof block walls and plastered walls.

LIGHTER IN COLOURThe high pressure and temperature in an autoclavebleaches the blocks to a very light colour. The exactingcontrol over all parts of the autoclave process isresponsible for the high uniformity of colour from cycleto cycle.

NEW CHEMICAL STRUCTUREWith autoclave curing, entirely new chemical reactionstake place between cements and aggregates, resultingin more inert chemical compounds being formed. These compounds are relatively unaffected bymoisture, further reducing volumetric changes andkeeping subsequent shrinkage to a minimum.

NO EFFLORESCENCEThe lime and salts normally present in Portland cementand aggregates (responsible for leaching andefflorescence of units) under the autoclave process, unite with the silicates, added to the concrete mix, toform a new chemical crystalline structure.

LESS VOLUME CHANGEBecause on the job site, units are frequently subjectedto cycles of wetting and drying during the course ofconstruction, it is important that autoclave cured unitshave less than 50% volume change due to cycles ofwetting and drying, than united cured by othermethods.

STRONGER AND TOUGHERUnits have a high early modulus of rupture andcompressive strength, makeing them stronger andtougher, more resistant to chipping and breaking in allphases of handling from the manufacturing plant totheir final position in a wall.

Day & Campbell innovative patented admixtures

Freshly molded products being transported from the present kiln to Day &Campbell state-of-the-art automated and computerized autoclave vessel.

Autoclave product is then removed and is now ready for use, cured within 8 hoursversus traditional 24 hours for low pressure cured blocks.

the Autoclave Advantage

High Pressure Steam High Temperature Preshrunk Product

The Autoclave Door is closed and saturated steam is introduced into pressure vessel.

After curing process is completed, the steam pressure is released, creating a vacuum which reduces the moisture content of the block to an air drycondition.

Autoclaving is a process of curing in a pressure vessel insaturated steam for a period of time sufficient to produce astabilized finished product. In this atmosphere, new chemicalcompounds are formed having immediate and permanentstrengths. The new compounds, being crystalline in structurerather than gel-like, are hard, stabilized and preshrunk. Throughthe formation of crystalline binders, the “built-in” shrinkagecoefficient of the Autoclaves products is extremely low and inmost units shrinkage is negligible. Furthermore, because ofcuring temperatures up to 3500 F at elevated pressures, blocksare in air dry condition upon emerging from the pressurevessel.

Through Autoclaving, complete curing is accomplished in a fewhours, therefore time as a yardstick of quality is obsolete. Inaddition, the autoclave process is easily duplicated from onecycle to the other taking the “guesswork” out of curing with theassurance that every run is of equally high quality.

The true significance of Autoclaving is in the consistence highperformance record of Autoclaved products. All other factorsbeing equal, Autoclaved masonry products have a record of

performance equal to, or better than, any other regardless ofmaterial or process. Autoclaved block or brick may be used inany masonry structure, whether it be load bearing, partition, pier or backup with the assurance that everything has beendone that can be done to the unit to produce dependable, attractive masonry walls. The overall costs of masonry wallsmade up of Autoclaved units is generally lower. Because of thelow shrinkage potential, recognized by many authorizingagencies, less wall reinforcement and fewer control joints arenecessary. A savings is labor results because of lower breakingand fewer control joints and less wall reinforcements.

The characteristics emphasized here are fully supported throughperformance and numerous test data by independent agenciessuch as the Portland Cement Association, the University ofToledo and others.

leading National Agencies such as the Corps of Engineers andthe American Concrete Institute recognize Autoclave units assuperior and incorporate these characteristics into specificationsand specification guides.
