Green Mountain National Forest (GMNF) officials are recommending that snowmobilers exercise cau- tion when operating on the Forest, and all lands, in Vermont this winter. GMNF officials remind snowmobile enthusiasts to heed to all gates and signs and to stay off roads and trails that are closed. Weather permitting, snowmobile use is allowed on designated trails within the GMNF for four months beginning on December 16, and ending on April 15, 2012. “We are concerned about user safety. Patrols which are aimed at enforcing rules and regulations, monitoring trail conditions and providing visitor information will occur throughout the Forest,” said Colleen Madrid, Forest Supervisor for the Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forests. The GMNF will continue to work closely with state and local law enforcement agencies, as well as the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) to make sure that users of the trail system are respectful, responsible, law abiding, and safe. The GMNF and VAST cooperate to maintain more than 470 miles of national forest system trails that are part of the larger statewide snow- mobile network. VAST is one of a few snowmo- bile associations in the United States that has a cooperative partnership agreement with the U.S. Forest Service. “All of these trails allow mixed uses, so people are snowshoeing, hiking, and cross-country skiing, as well as using snowmo- biles. Snowmobilers should travel responsibly and yield to other users,” said Madrid. The maximum speed on state lands is 35 miles per hour and Vermont has a tough Snowmobiling While Intoxicated Law that covers alcohol, as well as drugs. The Forest Service is also warning the public of the dangers associated with riding, hiking and skiing on frozen water bodies. Trail users are encouraged to be mindful of fallen trees and other hazards they may encounter. Operators must maintain control of their snowmobile while riding; keep to the right at all times, wear hel- mets, and stay on designated trails only. All snowmobiles must be legally registered, have liability insurance, and operators must purchase a VAST Trails Maintenance Assessment decal. Officials also encourage winter trail users to pack a flashlight, cell phone, food, and extra warm clothing in case of an emergency. The Northeast racing world lost a great ambassador and friend with the passing of David Heath on Dec. 20, 2012 at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, Vt. Born in Barre Sept. 8, 1946, Dave was the son of John D. and Hazel A. (Farr) Heath. He was a graduate of Northfield High School in 1965 and attended

Wentworth Institute in Boston. After graduation, David was employed at Fastener Bearing Co. in New Britain, Conn. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1970 to 1974. He was a member of the Canadian Club. Dave is perhaps best well known as Thunder Road’s track pho-tographer and the leader of the infamous and unrenowned TR infield “photographer pack”. The infield at Thunder Road will certainly be a lot lonelier and lackluster without Dave. Alan Ward, Eric LaFleche, Leif Tillotson, Buzz Fisher, myself, Cynthia Weed, Tom Neubelt and others all spent a great deal of time atop the infield flower boxes trading photographic lies and boasts, telling racing stories and solving world problems. Dave was an “ole” world pho-tographer, most of the time out-shooting all of us with our new world-up to date- fandangle equipment. His results and pic-tures were second to none. He will be missed by his infield peers, drivers, crews, officials and fans but has probably already put together photo albums for the likes of Earnhardt, Richmond, MacTavish and oth-ers at his current assignment. God Speed, Dave.

What They’re Saying“You are always looking for ways of improving your facility,

and I take great pride in surrounding myself with good people. I have been looking for just the right person to take over this job on race day, and I am happy to announce that I have found a person that I feel will help to continue to move things forward in a posi-tive manner. I have done the job for the last three seasons and thoroughly enjoy the adventure on Friday night’s, but the time has come for some new blood, and this will allow me to concentrate on managing the facility properly on race night. Mike Conrad will be the new Race Director in 2013. Mike has been a racer, a crew-member, a track official and just an all-around great person to have at the speedway. He brings some good Race Directing experience with him, and I have the utmost respect for him and am absolutely confident that he will do a great job:” Canaan Dirt Speedway, General Manager- Dick Therrien on appointing Mike Conrad as the new 2013 Race Director.

Next LapThe 2012 American Canadian Tour and Serie ACT Castrol

Banquet of Champions will be held on Saturday January 12 at the Double Tree by Hilton Ballroom in Burlington. The gala will crown champions from both series, honor drivers and crews and present special awards.

Fans headed to NASCAR Acceleration Weekend will have the opportunity to meet inaugural NASCAR Hall of Famer Johnson at Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon Shine & Sign. The new event will feature a fan Q&A and autograph session with Johnson and a free tasting at the Midnight Moon moonshine bar. All fans with a NASCAR Preview 2013 ticket will have free admission to the Shine & Sign, which will be held immediately following the NASCAR Preview on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

In just two short weeks, SPEED and SPEED.com will be live from the high banks of Daytona International Speedway when Preseason Thunder kicks off the 2013 Sprint Cup Series season. SPEED and SPEED.com offer live coverage of the Jan. 10-12 test session in its entirety with SPEED live from all afternoon sessions and SPEED.com streaming all morning sessions. Darrell Waltrip, a NASCAR on FOX and SPEED analyst who will cover Daytona testing for SPEED, says he will be watching for parity among the manufacturers with the new Cup Series race car. Waltrip points out that the new car, given its current uncertainties, potentially could tip the scale in favor of one manufacturer over another, at least temporarily.
