The Context
As drilling operations become more challenging geologists, operators and engineers need new ways to improve operational efficiency, increase production, reduce NPT and minimize risks.
Current methods of data acquisition rely on wireless data transfer technologies (mud pulse & electromagnetic transmission) ineffective in downhole transmission media conditions. On their own these technologies cannot achieve the speed or volume of data transfer required for modern downhole operations and subsurface evaluations. And currently these technologies can only transfer data from the BHA and the status of the wellbore is currently unknown as measurements can not be acquired along the drillstring.

Tool actuation
Broadband Network: What it Means
• Provides high-speed, high-volume, high-definition, bi-directional broadband data transmission that enables downhole conditions to be measured, evaluated, monitored allowing tool actuation in real time.
• Enables instantaneous transmission of full datasets from measurement tools in the bottomhole assembly and for the first time all along the drillstring
• Delivers drilling engineers and geologists get all the facts in real time and are able to make fast, accurate decisions and solve potential problems as they happen.
• Offers redundancy for existing telemetry systems, reduces trips for failed pulsers and increased tolerance to LCM or inconsistent mud
• Enables industry experts to clearly see things they couldn’t see before and achieve results like never before through a synthesis of broadband data transfer, measurements and operations
Approach to Deploy the Broadband Network
• Fault imaging at 100ft/hr in 17 ½” hole – Modifying well
trajectory
• Dip picking in real time – Improving structural understanding
• Stick slip in real time – Modifying drilling parameters and
extended hole section
• Tool memory filled Up
• Wellbore breakout imaging – Caliper in real time
• Diagnosed sensor failure – Drilling Ahead
• Conclusion: More data
saves time to interpret
