INTRODUCTION

The AACR's Employment Register is intended to attract youngscientists to the Association, increase interest in AACR programs, andprovide a valuable service to all cancer researchers, both senior andjunior investigators.

Since 1988, AACR Staff has scheduled interviews at the annualmeeting, and brief advertisements describing available candidates andpositions have been published in the Proceedings of the America,,Associatio,z for Cancer Research and in three issues of CancerResearch. These services will be continued in 1996. Registration formsfor the 1996 Employment Register can be found on the followingpages. Fees have been set at the following levels:Each candidate registration— by an AACR member $10

Each position listing— by an AACR member from a nonprofit or

governmental organization $75— by a nonmember from a nonprofit or

governmental organization $125— by a commercial organization $275

SCHEDULING OF INTERVIEWS

The AACR will set aside space at the annual meeting forinterviews which will be scheduled at mutually agreeable times duringthe following hours: Saturday, April 20, from I :00-7:00 p.m.; Sunday,Monday, and Tuesday, April 21-23, from 8:00 am. to 5:00 p.m.; andWednesday, April 24, from 9:00 a.m. to I :00 p.m. Each candidate andemployer will receive an identification number. Registrants who submittheir forms and fees by March 29, 1996, will receive anacknowledgment card which contains their identification number.

PUBLICATION OF LISTINGS

Short advertisements describing each candidate and position listingwill be published in Volume 37 (1996) of the Proceedings of theAmerican Association for Cancer Research and in the July 1,September 1, and November 1, 1996, issues of Cancer Research. Theattached forms contain space for copy for these advertisements. Pleasetype carefully to ensure accurate reproduction of your advertisement.Your copy must not exceed the limits of the box because space forthese advertisements is limited. Advertisements for available positionsshould contain the name and address of the person conducting the jobsearch, and candidates will be able to communicate with that persondirectly. Candidate advertisements will be anonymous. The AACR willsend the candidate's complete form via first-class mail to any registeredemployer who requests it. The employer must bear the cost of receivingcandidate forms in any manner other than first-class mail.

As noted above, because of the early publication date of theProceedings, forms must be received by January 8, 1996, to ensurepublication in that document. However, all advertisements submittedbefore or during he meeting will be published in the three issues ofCancer Research. Registrants wishing to withdraw their advertisementsmust submit written requests to that effect to the Association Office byMay 15, 1996, for the July 1 issue; July 15, 1996, for the September 1issue; and September 16, 1996, for the November 1 issue. RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERSHIPCandidates should be aware ofthe following responsibilities of

membership in the AACR. Active members must pay annual dues.In 1996 annual dues for active members are $160, $95 of which isdesignated for AACRjournal subscriptions. Newly elected membersof the AACR who have already purchased subscriptions to CancerResearch, Clinical Cancer Research, Cell Growth & Differentiation,or Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention at the higher,nonmember rates will receive reimbursement ofthe unused portionof those subscriptions once their first year's membership dues arepaid in full.

Corresponding members are required to pay dues ($80 in 1996)and may, if they wish, subscribe to Cancer Research, ClinicalCancer Research, Cell Growth & Differentiation, or Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention at reduced member rates.

Applicants elected in March will be responsible for payment ofthat year's dues; applicants elected in July and November will paydues for the following year. QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIPActive membership in the AACR is open to investigators who

live in the Americas. Individuals who have conducted two years ofresearch resulting in peer-reviewed publications relevant to cancer,or who have made substantial contributions to cancer research inan administrative or educational capacity, are eligible. If acandidate has conducted research in an area of biomedical sciencerelated to cancer, he or she will qualify for membership. Evidenceof patents relevant to cancer research may be submitted asqualifications for membership in lieu ofpeer-reviewed publications.

Corresponding membership is open to persons who are notresidents of the Americas. The qualifications for correspondingmembership are the same as those indicated above for activemembership. Visiting scientists from outside the Americas whointend to return to their countries of origin by the anticipated timeof election should apply for corresponding membership. All othervisiting scientists should apply for active membership and transferto corresponding status upon leaving the Americas.

Graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, andphysicians in training who do not yet meet the above qualificationsfor active or corresponding membership should apply for associatemembership. Forms for associate membership are available fromthe AACR Office.

PROCEDURES FOR APPLICATIONThere are three deadlines for the receipt of a membership

application: January 1, May 1, and September 1 ofeach year. TheMembership Committee will review all complete applications foractive membership that have been received by these deadlines andwill submit recommendations on each candidate to the Board ofDirectors which formally elects all members. Associate membership is open to graduate students, medicalstudents, postdoctoral fellows, and physicians in training who arefollowing a course of study or who are working in a researchprogram relevant to cancer. Scientists in training who already

have a substantial record of publications may wish to apply foractive or corresponding membership which confers full benefits ofmembership.

BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), ascientific society consisting of laboratory and clinical cancerresearchers, was founded in 1907 to facilitate communication anddissemination of knowledge among scientists and others dedicatedto the cancer problem; to foster research in cancer and relatedbiomedical sciences; to encourage presentation and discussion ofnew and important observations in the field; to foster publiceducation, science education, and training; and to advance theunderstanding of cancer etiology, prevention, diagnosis, andtreatment throughout the world. Associate members of the AACRenjoy the following benefits:

1. the privilege ofsponsoring a paper for presentation at the AACRannual meeting provided that (a) the associate member is thepresenter of the paper and (b) an active, corresponding, emeritus, or honorary member in good standing of the AACR alsosigns the abstract of the paper in support of the work (In this

instance, the member who cosigns the abstract does not lose hisor her own sponsorship privilege.);

2. an advance copy of the scientific Program and (if one has beenpurchased by the associate member) the Proceedin'gs of theAmerican Association for Cancer Research which containsabstracts of all papers being presented at each annual meeting;

3. the privilege of registering for the annual meeting at the lowstudent rate (This rate is otherwise available only to predoctoralstudents.);

4. preferred access to the AACR Employment Register;5. optional subscriptions to the Association's high-quality journals

Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research, Cell Growth &Differentiation, and Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers &Prevention at reduced member rates;

6. priority notification of events in the AACR's series of specialconferences on timely subjects in the field;

7. reduced registration rates at special conferences;8. the receipt of AACR newsletters, meeting announcements, and

an up-to-date membership directory; and9. the facilitation of informal scientific exchange with leading

researchers in the cancer field.

PROCEDURES FOR APPLICATION

Persons wishing to apply for associate membership must use the

official application form on the reverse side of these instructions.Each candidate for associate membership must be nominated by anactive, corresponding, emeritus, or honorary member in goodstanding of the AACR. Three completed copies of the form shouldbe submitted; at least one of these copies must carry the original

signatures of both the candidate and the nominator. The applica

tion form may be submitted to the Association Office at any time.

After review of applications for associate membership, theExecutive Director will notify candidates of their election ordeferral within one month of the receipt of the application form.A check for one year's dues payment must accompany the application. Dues are currently $35 for associate members residing in theAmericas and $45 for residents of other countries. This fee will berefunded to any candidate deemed to be ineligible for associatemembership. Checks should be in U.S. currency, made payable toAACR, Inc., and drawn on a U.S. bank. RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERSHIP

Associate members must pay annual dues in an amount to bedetermined by the AACR Board of Directors. Dues for 1995 and1996 have been set at $35 per year for residents of the Americasand $45 for residents of other countries. If an application issubmitted by August 31, the accompanying dues payment will becredited to the current year. Candidates submitting applicationsbetween September 1 and December 31 may indicate whether theywish their dues payments credited to the current or forthcomingyear. Candidates should be aware, however, that associatemembers may sponsor an abstract for the annual meeting only iftheir dues for the current year are paid. For example, an associatemember submitting an abstract in November 1995 for theforthcoming annual meeting must have paid dues for 1995. Anynewly elected associate members of the AACR who have alreadypurchased subscriptions to Cancer Research, Clinical CancerResearch, Cell Growth & Differentiation, and Cancer Epidemiology,Biomarkers & Prevention at the higher, nonmember rate willreceive a refund for the unused portion of that subscription uponreceipt of their payment for a member's subscription.

Each Fall the AACR will send to current associate members aninvoice for dues for the forthcoming year. Payment of this invoicemust be accompanied by a statement signed by the associatemember's current registrar, dean, or department head, verifyingthe member's current academic status. The Association's By-Lawsstate that dues are payable for each year in advance by January 1of the year to which they should be applied. An individual may bean associate member for a maximum of five years. Each year inwhich an individual pays dues will count as one full year ofassociate membership. Thus, an associate member who pays duesfor 1995 may retain associate membership until December 31,1999. The Board ofDirectors may terminate the membership of anassociate member whose dues are in arrears for two years.

1996 GERTRUDE ELION CANCER RESEARCH AWARD

Supported by an Educational Grant fromGlaxo Weilcome Oncology

• This Award was established in honor of Nobel Laureate Dr. Gertrude Elion,

Scientist Emeritus at Glaxo Wellcome Co. and Past President and Honorary

Member of the AACR.

• The Gertrude Elion Cancer Research Award is a one-year, $30,000 grant for

a scientist in the U.S. or Canada engaged in meritorious basic, clinical, or

translational research in cancer etiology, diagnosis, treatment, or prevention

at the level of non-tenured Assistant Professor.

• The AACR will reimburse the Awardee for travel to the 1996 Annual

Meeting in Washington, D.C., where Dr. Elion will personally present this

Award.

Eligibility

Candidates must have completed postdoctoral studies or clinical fellowships not later than July1 of the Award year, and ordinarily not more than five years earlier. Tenured faculty inacademia, government employees, and employees of private industry are not eligible for thisaward. A Candidate need not be a member of the AACR at the time of application, but mustbe nominated by a Member of the AACR. Associate Members may not be nominators.

Selection Process

Applications are evaluated by a Committee consisting of AACR Members who are experts inbasic, clinical, and translational cancer research. Complete applications must be submitted byFebruary 15, 1996, to be considered for the 1996 Award.
