Author Guidelines

GENERAL

The Malaysian Journal of Science and Technology (MJoST) aims primarily to publish

articles resulting from original research – pure or applied – in the various aspects of

academic endeavour broadly classied as science and technology. The primary

criteria will be that these papers contribute to the advancement of nowledge in the

respective elds.

MJoST also publishes technical notes and reviews. Technical notes give opportunity

to present preliminary but meaningful results or purely practical papers on how

certain problems are solved. !eviews give opportunity to e"perts to provide readers

with a thorough review and analysis of issues in a sub#ect area of relevance.

MANUSCR!T !RE!ARAT"N AN# SU$MSS"N

!re%aration

Manuscripts should generally be arranged in the following order$ title page%

abstract% introduction% materials and methods (or Methodology or &rocedure)%

results% discussion (or results and discussions)% conclusion (or conclusion and

recommendations) acnowledgements% and references. 'owever% papers in the

humanities and the technological elds may follow rules diering from the above

but must remain logical.

 Su&'ission

Manuscripts% preferably in nglish% should be submitted via the online system of

MJoST. Manuscripts must be typed double*spaced on +, si-e paper with at least cm

margins on either side of the paper/ double spacing applies to te"t only and 01T to

tables% references and gure legends. 2t is recommended that prospective authors

use numbered pages. &apers that fail to meet the MJoST style and form will be

re#ected outright.

!eturning revised manuscripts should also be via the online system of MJoST. Scripts

should be typeset in MS 3ord format. Submission of papers to MJoST is understoodto mean that the author(s) agree to transfer copyright of the article solely to the

publisher to facilitate the widest possible dissemination.

 Title %age

The rst page of any manuscript shall include the title% name(s) of authors% their

institutional a4liations and addresses% city and country (-ip codes% if applicable).

The title of the article is typed in bold capitals using font si-e 5, Times 0ew !oman/

abbreviations are not allowed. Title must be within one hundred characters

(including spaces) and descriptive of the contents of the manuscripts. +uthors

should be listed with surnames rst followed by their initials in font si-e 56 Times

0ew !oman. +ddresses (including emails) should be listed under the names of

authors. 3here authors wor at dierent addresses% they should be identied by

numbered superscripts against their names. !eferences to professional7ualications8titles are not re7uired. The rst author will be assumed to be the

contact person unless otherwise stated. The title page should also have a running

heading of 9: characters or less% including spaces placed at the top of the page.

 A&stract

The abstract heading should be typed in font si-e 56 Times 0ew !oman in bold

;&&!<+S. The te"t of the abstract should be typed in font si-e 56 Times 0ew

!oman and in italics. The abstract is a concise abbreviated version of the paper

which tells the reader whether the paper is worth reading at all/ it must therefore be

informative with respect to aim% methods% procedures% results% discussion% and

conclusion. +n abstract should not e"ceed :: words.

eyords

'eading should be 56 points Times 0ew !oman bold. + ma"imum of ve eywords

(separated by comma) that best describe the material being presented must follow

the abstract.

 ntroduction

The heading should be typed in font si-e 56 Times 0ew !oman in bold ;&&!<+S.

The introduction should follow the ey words and should be as brief as possible/ it

should concern itself with a clear #ustication for the wor undertaen and theunderlying theory and hypothesis/ a short review of literature in the eld of study is

obligatory although any e"haustive review properly belongs to the =iscussion

section. The introduction is limited to not more than two pages double spaced.

 Materials and Methods

The heading should be typed with font si-e56 Times 0ew !oman and in bold;&&!<+S. This section describes concisely the methodology8proceduresemployed so that anyone wishing to replicate the trial can do so and obtaincomparable results. &rovide su4cient detail so as to remove any possibleambiguities with respect to design% treatments% measurements% analysis% etc.

3here methods employed are commonly nown in a given eld details should beomitted and the reference given instead. Modications to nown methodologymust however be clearly described and e"plained.

 Results and #iscussion

This section describes clearly the observations made and their conciseinterpretation/ the discussion is probably the single most important section.3hile the two sections (!esults and =iscussion) may be separated% it is generallyadvisable to combine them to facilitate easy discussion of the results without

7/26/2019 Author Guidelines - MJoST - Edited

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/author-guidelines-mjost-edited 3/6

having to repeat the results. !esults should be presented in tables and8or gureswhenever possible% but should be clearly e"plained in the te"t taing care toavoid unnecessary repetition of tabular data. 2nformation presented in tablesshould not be repeated in gures% or vice versa. Standard deviations8errors helpthe reader to follow the trend of results and should be supplied wheneverappropriate. The discussion should interpret observations – i.e. e"plain the

causes of events – and not simply state the obvious. The discussion shouldinclude references to earlier or contemporary literature relevant to the topicstudied/ this way% a reviewer can decide on the merits of the manuscript.

 Ta&les

Tables are to be numbered according to their se7uence in the te"t and shouldalso be referred to in the te"t before they are placed. The Tables should beinserted at the e"act positions where they belong in the body of the paper. Si-eand layout limitations of MJoST do not allow for large tables. +ll Tables must haveshort but self*e"planatory titles. Table numbers and titles should be placed at thetop left of the Tables. +rabic numerals are to be used. Tables should have onlythree hori-ontal lines/ however in certain circumstances an additional hori-ontalline may be applicable. Tables should be numbered from Table 5 and continuedserially to 6% % etc. +s much as possible avoid numbering unrelated tables as(a)% (b)% e.g. Table (a)% Table (b).

 *igures

>igures should be inserted at the e"act positions where they belong in the bodyof the paper and should also be referred to in the te"t before they are placed.

They should be clearly captioned and numbered in se7uence below each gure.?ine drawings must be done in blac in. &hotocopies8scanned copies are notacceptable. &hotographs (good% glossy blac and white) and line drawings shouldnot be mounted. <olour illustrations may be reproduced at the author@s e"pense.

>igures may not be used to duplicate data already presented in tables or te"t orvice versa. &hotographs and illustrations other than tables are considered asgures and should be referred to as such. >igures should be numbered from 5and continued serially to 6% % etc. +s much as possible avoid numberingunrelated gures as (a)% (b)% e.g. >ig. (a)% >ig. (b).

 *ootnotes

>ootnotes to tables should be superscript numbers (5) while superscript letters(a) should be reserved for statistical analysis/ asteriss (A) are reserved forprobability values. >ootnotes to the title page (including title% authors% addresses%etc.) are numbered se7uentially from the beginning. >ootnotes should be usedsparingly and only if absolutely re7uired% otherwise the information should be
