EXECUTWE DIRECTOR'S NOTES

The near year is now with us and trustfully it will pro- duce all that we are seeking to achieve. Certainly 1988 was a year that had its share of good and bad, fortunately the good always outweighs the bad although there are many occasions when this doesn't quite appear to be so.

Thankfully we can look forward to a promising 1989, particularly promising because of the fact that many new persons have joined our sport. Each will add their own per- sonal flavor to their respective clubs and in one way or another make their mark on the sport. Don't let them drift away because they haven't been made welcome.

February will bring about the first of our Nationals for 1989 with the Olympic disciplines being held at the Mel- bourne Gun Club. News from New Zealand is that an of. ficial team will be coming as part of their Commonwealth Games preparations and as always our visitors are most welcome.

April is the big one of the year with the Trap Nationals at Echuca commencing with the Handicap Event on 1st April, concluding on 6th April with the Lhuble Rise. Being a centrally located venue for the larger proportion of our memhers, attendances are expected to s t least reach the 1986 level which saw a total of 756 competitors shooting for the Double Barrel Championship. If you haven't yet been to a National Championship Series, or maybe it's been a while since you last attended, here is an opportunity to join with your fellow shooters and try your skills against them - we look forward to meeting many new members as well as renewing old acquaintances.

November is the last of the year's Nationals with the Skeet being held in November at Wagga from 16th-19th. As November is a big month in Wagga you would be well advised to secure your accommodation early otherwise you could well have a problem.

I hope that 1989 brings you and your family all the health and happiness possible and that your shooting skills continue to gmw.

EDITOR'S Dear Alan,

LBOX Whilst perusing the response to the debenture pro-

gramme I was rather disappointed to note that there were a lot of names missing who have got a lot out of shooting and at their time of life should now be considering putting something back into the game. It is not a donation but simply a low-interest loan.

It has been pointed out by our president that unless the programme gathers considerable momentum by the end of the year the executive will have to look at alternative means of raising the finance. By the time this goes to press we will know. - -~

I turncd the page of the magazine and was confronted by a letter Prom Messrs M.J. Hawley and G.A. Featherstone which contains considerable merit and is worthy of corn. mcnt. If tho debenture scheme Pails this is onc sure way of raising the money. A levy suggested oP $15 per hend over 10.000 members will give us the necessary capital. Action will have to be taken soon; even though the capital held by the executive from the sale of assets is earning interest. the interest is not equal to the appreciation rate of pmper- ty. The debentures have to be repaid with interest which is a drag on the association whilst a levy is a straight-out gift and gets the association going forward without that drag. We should have done something about this years ago.

Can we aPPord a $15 levy? In reality of course we can. If you can't aPPord S 15 you can't afford to shoot. We may lose a Pew members but most will stick and others will come back later.

"World Vision" ask you to forgo fwd for 48 h o w and give the value to the relief of famine. Would you forgo one meal for the sake of finding ourselves a home - remember that's all it is, the price of a meal.

Yours sincerely. Cec Herbert

Wlth the support of you, the members, a project to look forward to with the satisfaction of being able to control aspects of your sport. Thank you must be expressed to Mr N. Hyder for his patience and support and to Reg Wagland and Tehy Momny for their enthusiasm and untiring evaluation of the project. The manufacturing plant will be situated on the complex and should be in production early '89.

Congratulations to A. Forsberg, high gun winner at the Skeet Nationals conducted at Melbourne. Also to all team members for their own Dersonal ~erformances and to the State shoulder to shoider tea& in running second to South Auatmlia.

State coaching director Murray Alexnnder recently con- ducted a two.day intensive level two coach~ng seminar It was attended with participants having the privilege of Na- tional coaching director Peter Quires' presence. From all reports a very successful weekend. An advanced coaching project will be entered into next year in an endeavour to lift I.S.U. competition and gain new competitors to a level that would enable them to reach the level of Naironal trainina squad members. Club coaches and zone deleaates will be ii touch. Murray Alexander in his capacity as itate coaching director has created a formula which he, along with P. Quire and the executive, believe W mve the dedicated competitor every opportunity to react great heights in I.S.U. All clubs now would have rom~leted their shootina oro-

ersmme for the vear. To the wi-ers of hiah rmns an; Elub - ~ ~ ~~~ ~~ ~ ~ - - - - aggregates well done. To all club members now is che time for annual general meetings. If you are asked to tnke a position of office think of reasons why you should, not why you shouldn't - you might surprise yourself. Until next year,

Happy New Year, John Fiseioli W.A.C.T.A. Resident

Dear Sir, I refer to the article "World Winners" by Wayne Calaby

in the November issue of C.T.S.N. I knew Bill Wwncie and Jack Sutherland very well. I

started shooting in 1931 and saw a lot of them in those -

days. Bill lost his left hand and left eye in a blasting accident

on his property in Tasmania. The charge never went off. He waited for what he considered sdficient time for the fuse to have gone out, and went back to have a look for it to blow up in his face. I can't give you the date, but it was after the accident that he won the World Pigeon Championship at Monte Carlo. He was a remarkable man, and of great courage to overcome his accident.

Yours sincerely. Max Howell

6988 VICTORIAN I.S.U. ELIMINATIONS

1988 saw major changes to the international shooting disciplines within Viotoria. For the first time in I.S.U. trap an elimination series was held in all four Victoria zones on either Olympic Trap or I.S.U. Ball Trap layouts a s permit- ted under U.I.T. rules. As art of these zone eliminations ~-~~ ~- ~ ~ ~

each zonc aclccted a team of eight open shooters and four junior shooters to compete in the final elimination which was the State Olympic R n p Championship conducted at thc Melbourrlc Gun Club on November 26th and 27th.

Thc new format for the eliminations was ndoptcd to try and reduce costs for the country shooters who would nor- m a y have to travel to Melbourne at least four times in the past to eliminate whereas this time it only involved one appearance.

The zone eliminations proved to be an outstanding suo- cess with a total of 114 different shooters, most of the state's best, contesting for positions in their respective zone teams. Some excellent performances were achieved. especially by our juniors, with Rohan Penn from Eohuoa nhootinn a 73175 in the North West Zone elimination a t -~~ ~ ~

M~~iyborough and Glcn McIIenry from Geelong shooting 72 75 on Olympic R a p at Frankston Gun Club, both in very windy conditions.

Russell Mark from Geelong Gun Club was successful in taking overall honors in all four eliminations.

The latest U.I.T. rules were used in all eliminations which meant a "final" was conducted to decide overall platings. Flash targets were used in all finals and this pro- vided spectacular entertainment for aU participants and onlookers.

As mentioned the Victorian Olympio Trap Championship was the grand finale for the I.S.U. year and a record atten- dance of 67 shooters turned out a t Melbourne Gun Club in ~~~~ -~ ~ ~

V ~ N wet conditions. The la rm attendance and some minor -~ " - ~ - - ~ ~~

trap problems kept shoot &shal Rob Rees busy all day and shooting on Sarurdny did not finish until nearly 8 p.m.

Ovcrnighr lerder was Michael Diamond Prom Sydney wirh 95 I00 followed by Dorningo Diaz and Stephen Hober- man both with 94.

Sunday dawned and a typical Melbourne day followed - very dark and vary wet. Good scores were few and far bet- ween: however Russell Mark managed a 96 to take a one- tnrget lead into the final with a totalof 186. Other finalists were Diamond 185. Diaz 183. Haberman 181. Brett Dunstan 175 aud Geoff Mark on 173.

The final proved to be the highlight of the weekend and the many spectators that stayed back till 7 p.m. to watch the shooting of the flash targets were well rewarded. In dark and vvindy conditions Diamond managed to shoot a clean round whilst Mark missed his 15th target to total 24 thus tying with Miohael on 2101225; however under U.I.T. rules ties are decided on countbacks therefore giving Dia- mond the title, a very worthy champion.

All other grades were decided over the 200 targets. AA grade was won by Russell Mark with 186 from Domingo Diaz on 188. A grade went to John Dunstan from Kerang with 171 from Frank Vella on 169. B grade went to Robert Viney from Point Cook who has been a big improver over the past year in I.S.U. Second in B grade went to the state coach. Len Cook. with 166. one behind Viney. C wade saw Ross O'Meara nearly shoot his way into A g r G e with a very good 1681200. 18 ahead of Ron Trail1 from Colbinab- bin. Michael Diamond won the juniors with 185. ten ahead of Brett Dunstan.

Because there were three ladies entrants in Carmel Carlon. Carol Zagor and Val Hanson, a ladies trophy was provided with Carol being the victor with 117. C m e l has been a strong supporter of I.S.U. in 1988 and the title of 1988 ladies champion is well deserved. With the 1991 World Championship in Pertb just over 12 months away Carmel is staking a claim to being one of the three-member

ladies team to represent her country. The Interstate postal teams were made up of D. Diaz. S.

Haberman, L. Curtis. G. Mark, R. Mark and J . Dunstan in the open team and R. Penn. B. Dunstan. T. Faranda and G. Magdzisrz in the junior team.

Team High Guns were won by R. Mark with 96 and B. DunStan with 89.

The State Training Squad is R. Mark, D. Diaz. S. Haber- man. B. Dunstan. G. Mark and J . Dunstan with juniors R. Penn and Glen McHenry from Geelong who displayed some promising form throughout the year. All of these shooters receive free nominations for the I.S.U. Nationals.

The State Shoulder to Shoulder team is R. Mark. D. Diaz and S. Haberman who will, except for a miracle, prove Vic- toria to be the dominant state i n the teams match a t the Nationals.

The Zone Teams Match was new to the I.S.U. Carnival and oreatedwide interest. The South West Zone Teamof R. Mark, S. Haberman, G. Mark. A. Kinnear. C. Kneebone, W. Calaby, W. Wombwell. M. Pollock. G. MoHenry and D. Kemp picked up 3000 rounds of ammunition for their troubles with a score of 108411200 to easily defeat the North East Zone followed by the South East then the North West.

Overall Victorian I.S.U. Trap Champions for 1988 were Russell Mark with 2601275 and Rohan Penn winning the juniors with 2+6/275. These results were obtained by the totals of the State Title plus the best score in any of the Zone Eliminations.

In the I.S.U. Skeet event John Summers survived a tough shoot-off with Graham Guy to decide overall and AA honors. David Cunningham, Maria Costa and Barry Han- son took the A, B and C grade trophies with Carol Ogden t ~ k i n g the ladies. .--- ~

The Shoulder to Shoulder team comprised Summers. Guy and Meuleman.

Overall honors for the series were taken out by Ian Hale. 1988 saw a revival of I.S.U. shooting in Victoria mainly

due to a hardworking I.S.U. committee led by Gary Smith who put in countless hours of work which all I.S.U. shooters have benefited from.

1988 NATIONAL SKEET CHAWIONSHIPS

The co-operation received from all State Teams enabled Lhe opening ceremony to be conductedinfine style. Teams, 19aving assembled at 8.30am arched to their respective state flags to the accompa&ent of a Scottish piper courtesy of the Victoria Police Pipe Band with the grounds nf the Melbourne Gun Club being in magnificent condition.

After the official party had been introduced, Chief Superintendent Ron Braybrook from the Victorian Police was asked to fire the opening shot and a t no surprise to himself, the t a rge t was broken allowing the Championships to commence with the first scheduled event being:

2nd NATIONAL SKEET DOUBLES CIIAMPIONSHIP

Event Sponsors: Newsprinters Pty. Ltd. - B.P. Typesetting Pty. Ltd.

With 120 competitors nominating for the Doubles, the individual events were under way with the targets proving to be a little elusive. Not one shooter was able to post a possible with 49/50 being the best score recorded. At the completion of the shoat offs Melbourne Gun Club member Paul Krumins rvas the overdl -er with a well shot 53/54. Surprisingly a number of shooters who it was thought would be in contention for the Overall High Gun were left in the wake proving that Doubles shooting is an area where skills wiU need to be brushed up.

While conditions were not ideal they nevertheless sorted out the state teams with scores ranging from a low 2321250 to a high 2411250 recorded hy South Australia well led by Bob Dower, Skeet Shooters Representative to the National Shooting Committee who shot a 49/50 to be team equal with Kim Holnles. Bob was not a t all shy when accepting the V.C.T.A. Perpetual Trophy. reminding all present that it was not South AustraLia's first win in the event as they had won the Shoulder to Shoulder event in 1983 when it was first competed for. Well done S.A., and also the teams from other states who shot well and were a credit to the states being represented.

The International Teams event for the Glenn Trophy was shot for a t the completion of the National Title which determined the composition of the Australian Team. No doubt New Zealand will be out to wrest the trophy back when the event is conducted in their country in 1989. We wish them well.

TIT BITS I watched the Olympics on T V until I was square in the

eyes to see some shooting and the only result I heard was that John Maxwell shot 75/75 on the first day of competition trap shooting. How are we going to get our champs on the level of Border, Lewis, Norman, Cash and so on? We have champions but we do not get noticed.

Bundaberg October 3: Played host to Irvine Wynyard of Kaikohe NZ who had wins in events 3 & 4. On behalf of Bundy thanks for dropping in and hope you and your wife enjoyed your stay in Australia. On this day Troy Harris turned 15 years and shot the skeet 25/25 and twk out C Grade 1st in the DTL events 1 & 2. Good shwtmg Troy on your birthday, I bet you blew the candles off the cake when you got home. Allen Harris took out Event 3 C Grade. Once again a good shwt and nearly turned into a night shoot as well. . . only joking Geno, but I was pleased they had the lights on in the clubhouse.

Gympie was a quiet place to be when the boys were down at the Police Nationals at Marconi Gun Club, Sydney. A few trophies to be extradited back to Qld were for Gorden Holmes. Glen Durre. Clarrie Blissner, Peter Stiller. Peter Hinschen.

Months ago my wife bwked a pokie trip at Gold Coast and wouldn't you know it, fell on Gympie's two day shoot. I looked up the shooter's bible and found I was able to have a few events at Terranora Lakes. Nice to be there, the best view in the world with known and new shooters. Thanks Terranora, sony I had to leave before the finish.

Gympie two day shoot on October 8 & 9 saw a numerous amount of winners with Neil Beny taking the O/A WG & AA in events 2.3.4.5 & 7, K. Rehbein B Grade event 1 and the Ladies WG. Troy Harris Event 6 C Grade and Junior WG, E. Brereton Event 4 C Grade and the Veterans WG. Congratulations to all other winners, too numerous to mention all.

Maryborough Club ehoot October 23 saw Ivan Casperson take out Event 2 and the O/A WG. Ivan also shot for the jackpot but miesed, however, his wife gave him a baby boy just two weeks ago, so that is better than any jackpot Ivan. Hope all are well.

Tiu next time, see you at the shoots. Lost Bird

Charles Hlavaty

It ia with much regret that we report the death of our greatly respected Life Member. Charles Hlavaty. Charles had been bravely fighting cancer for some time, but continused his beloved skeet shooting until a fortnight before his death on October 27.1988 -three days after his 76th birthday.

He joined the N.S.W. Gun Club in March 1968. The respect of the members which he so quickly earned led to him being elected President from 1977 to 1980. He was elected a Life Member in 1978 as a tribute to the huge contribution he made to the running of the club, a contribution he continued to make unstintingly until his -. death.

Charles was a man of unswerving integrity. As a Referee and Referee Examiner he administered the rules of Clay T a m t .%ootin~ without Pear or favour for many vears.

A; a shooter Ge competed with enthusiasm aid-success amund this country and New Zealand, becoming one of the better known migratory skeeties.

As a friend, a shooter and a club stalwart, he will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our sympathy is extended to his wife Jean and his children Kathie, Rosie and John and their respective families,

John Richardson. New South Wales Gun Club Ltd.

The 13th Annual New South Wales Gun Club Charity Shoot was held on the weekend of 29th and 30th October, 1988 and was well attended by shooters from all over the State. The shoot was offioially opened by the Minister for Sport and Recreation. Mr Bob Rowland-Smith who was welcomed to the N.S.W. Gun Club by National President Mr Jim Scott. Official guests from all shooting disciplines were in attendance for the official opening. Mr Rowland- Smith fired the first shot and was successful in busting the very first target. FROM THE DESK OF THE NATIONAL COACHING DIRECTOR - PETER QUIRE NATIONAL COACHING COUNCIL MEETING, NOVEMBER 88

The National Coaching Council met in Adelaide in November. The Counoil consists of Arthur Kenna of Queensland, Stewart Browning from Tasmania. Greg Chan from the Northern Territory, Col Burt from New South Wales, Len Cook from Victoria, Murray Alexander from Western Australia. Don Stevens. South Australia, and myself.

e The National Coaching Council

Of all the various meetings and seminars that I attend. the Coaching Counoil meeting is, in my view, the most ha rmo~ous and the most productive. The Council members are all there with a single purpose, that is to raise the enjoyment and the standard of the clay target shooters of Australia. There are not the divisions between states that arise in all fields in Australia. the State Directors of -~ - ~ ~ ~~ .~ ~

~

course are proud of rcpreserrring their states, but because coaching is really an occupation that mncentrates on achieving benefits for others, they are mnccrned for all clay shwters in Australia not just those from their own states.

This being the case, the Council members share their knowledge, their experience, their successes and failures with one another, all of us are as pleased with a coaching success story from another director, just as much as if it were their own.

Sadly a common problem, more in some areas than othere, is lack of understanding in administration at all levels, of the importance of having an accredited coach who must adhere to certain standards, who will teach the basic s e a to beginners, encourage and assist more advanced shwters, and who by their example of conduct. orornote our wonderful swr t of clav shooting. -

Peopleaccept the vnportanceoP, and the need for. a fwty coach, a renms coach or a golf coach, and those who play Lhese sports contmue to go back and be miluenccd by those coaches for all of their competitive sports participation. Why not a shooting coach?

Administrations miss out on a great deal of informed knowledgeable input if the coach is not included in the decision making of the club, zone or state. Because administrators must be pre-occupied with the very

AUSTRALIAN CLAY TARGET NEWS - JANUARY 1989

necessary business of keeping finances balanced, running shoots and generally organizing, the coach can make an inout from the shwters point of view, i.e. what will keep new shooters a t the 01~6, what promotes our sport, and what shooters' worries, pleasures and fears are. These things may not seem as important as organization and finances. They can't be measured, hut they pertain to the human side of the equation. After all, a large part of the pleasure we as clay shwters get from our sport is the social interaction, the friendly atmosphere, and certainly breaking the targets. All of those areas are addressed as part of the coaches interaction with the shooters.

The Coaching Council members are continually up- dating their knowledge, reading, having input from the Coaching Council of Australia and attending seminars. Much of this at their own expense. I am personally grateful for the hard work and support that the members of the Council have given me, and most of all for the benefit of their knowledge, their suggestions on many matters. I believe that the clay shooters should also be grateful for all the coaches involved in the accreditation scheme for the time and effort that they put into improving our sport.

There are 308 accredited coaches, 247 Level 1. 55 Level 2, and six Level 3 coaches. All of whom have had to demonstrate their ability to be accredited.

The booklet AN INTRODUCTION TO CLAY TARGET SHOOTING has been updated by the Coaching Council. and the Executive of the A.C.T.A. has agreed to re-print it. so copies of this very handy booklet will be available in the New Year. It was also decided to print in the Clay News a list of the accredited coaches one State at a time. This month it will be coaches from that most beautiful island. Tasmania, who have some of Australia's most talented shwters and under the direction of Coaching Director. Stuart Browning, a good team of coaches. COACHING SEMINAR IN WESTERN A U S T U I A

I have been fortunate to have attended an excellent coaching seminar in Perth organized by W.A. State Director. Murray Alexander, and his most able helpers. Speakers from the W.A. Sports Department and outside sports made the weekend most informative. The best aspect for me was the attendance of so many of the State Coaches, their input and interaction was stimulating. Coaching is alive and well in W.A. Thank you all in W.A. for your hospitality. TASMANIAN ACCREDITED COACHES GRAHAM BLASKE'IT 54 Cornwall Cres..

STURT PEA FROM S.A.

Do you believe we are into 19897 And what a year 1988 has been with Gun Legislation, S.A.C.T.A. Constitution, the Levy for shooters now not finalised, the reorganising of the I.S.U. where there was a National Team selected. Unfortunately we were to find out later that the Olympic TraD Nationals were to be held on the same weekend ae our D.T:L. Carnival. This is verv disanwintinn for our tea& members. We were informed"no alteiationsmuld hemade.

Consequently our team has chosen not to go and rightly so, preferring to support the D.T.L. Carnival.

Last but not least, the building of the Clay Target Range at the International Sports Shooting Park at Virginia, home now for International Gun Club

THE LATE ROSS RITCHIE

On behalf of my family and myself we would like to thank the shooters of all States who helped Ross really enjoy and live to the fullest his 14 years of donated life. Thanks for the phone calls, letters and cards of support whilst Ross was in hospital and upon his death for the comfort, flowers, cards, letters and expressions of sympathy to us. Special thanks to Dick and Rhonda Ayres (life long friends) aleo Katanning (W.A.). Bordertown, Lake Albert and Wilkawatt gun clubs. As Ross would have said, all time is wasted what's not spend shooting or fishing (and yes there were still fish in the freezer).

Thanks for the wonderful memories, Shirley Ritchie. W'ILKAWATT
