30th AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL SQUARE DANCE

CONVENTION UPDATE * * * HOBART '89 Our committee were very pleased to have the opportunity to meet and talk with so many dancers who approached our booth at the Sydney National Convention. A large number of those dancers indicated their intention to ~ have a devil of a time & come to Tassie in '89 H and so were eager to learn a lot more about our island state's attractions, the venue and of course, most importantly where to stay. To this end, all our committee, plus a few willing helpers, were in constant demand answering numerous enquiries and making some firm bookings. Special thanks to Robyn Ladd of the Sydney office of the Tasmanian Visitors Corporation for her untiring and valuable assistance during the entire weekend. A full updated list of hotels/motels, holiday flats and caravan parks is included in this issue. Please take note of the new tariffs. You will also notice that due to some motels/flats being fully booked already that have been deleted from the list and replaced by others. For the benefit of those who have COPies of Tasbureau's · Travelways~ or the "Treasure Islander~ papers, the apparent discrepancy in tariffs is because the costs quoted therein are "per person~ and NOT ~per couple N

as shown on the registration forms. For some brief background information and photos of our Accommodation Officer, Rex Wilkins, and our Transport and

Tours Officer, Sue Wyatt, see the profiles in this issue, which also will tell you how you may contact them. They are both very capable of fulfilling all your travel or accommodation needs to your complete satisfaction. feedback from the 29th National and Expovention has indicated that dancers would prefer a Trail-in Dance rather than a Trail-out Dance, therefore, the committee has decided to cancel the dancing on Tuesday, 25th April '89 and substitute With a dance on Thursday 20th April '89. This will leave the Anzac Day holiday free to allow those who wish to return home then to do so without missing out on any dancing. Further details will be available at a later date. Callers and round dance/clogging cuers please note that you can obtain your appropriate Callers Registration Forms on application to your respective state aSSOCiations. Quite a number of Dancer Registration Forms were handed out from our booths, both at Sydney and Brisbane ConventIOns, however, If you have not yet received one, details will be published on a regular basis in this magazine. Hoping to hear from you very soon, in the meantime - Happy dancing and keep smiling.

Ins has travelled qUite eXlen~vely dUring the last twelve months, danong In all States and Terntories in order to qualify for both the gold and the Silver BI-centennlal S.D. Awards_ Her tireless and never-ending efforts in square dancing have been recognised by the Tasmanian Square Dance SOCIety who awarded her hfe Membership a few years ago. Rod Gray has been involved in !.quare dancing for about eight years now. He first became interested after seeing an artlde on the ABes "Weekend Magazme " which alerted him to an advertised one-nightstand being conducted by the late Fred Byrne at the Southern Tasmanran town of Cygnet. It was due to Fred's enthu~asm and patience that Rod became "hooked " on the adJvity. He later started calling but took to It more seriously after winning an amateur callers competition at a Fred

Byrne Memonal Dance a few years ago. He now co-calls with Cyril Edwards at the Cygnet Swingers Square Dance Club about 60 kms south of Hobart He has been co-convenor of two Tasmanian State Conventions and is the assistant secretary on the 30th National Convention committee. Maree who IS a dental nurse also started square dancing about 6" years ago In r~ard to next years National to be held in Hobart, Rex has taken conSiderable time aqualntJng himseH With fi rst hand knowledge of a comprehenSive accommodation list which indudes a full range of hotels! motels, holiday flats, "home-share" hosts and caravan parks which should SUit all yOlJr requirements from the most budget·minded needs to top of the range tastes. Many of these are not on the offiClalll5t but details are available from Rex. These lists are designed to save you time, money and effort In planning yOlJr stay in Hobart With the mrnlmum of fuss and expense. In addition, th is year Sue IS acting Senior Teacher for the prrmary section of the school. She IS a relative new-comer to the activity of square danCing as she has only been involved for about 3 years. Her enthUSiasm and interest in all aspects of the square dancing scene, however, makes up for any lack of experrence It seems to be In her

blood as both her parents were Tasmanian representatives in square dancing back in the late '50's Sue started learning round dancing approximately 12 months ago and to add to her achievements, in Sydney, joined the contra dance aS5OOallon - a sideline which has interested her for some Orne She IS presently paSSing on her knowledge to her Class 5 students. It is hoped that they Will become profiCient enough to do her credit at future arts and dance fesova ls In the Hobart area as well as perform at the 30th National Convention next year. Sue's first National experrence was al Geelong Coovention last year and she has followed that up With the 29u, National th iS year but due to the laSSie school holtdays finrshlng the same weekend was unfortunately unable to go on to the Expoventlon. This dldn·t prevent her VIsiting the Sunshine State and Expo beforehand though! The relatively little spare time Sue has remarnlng IS filled to overflowing with her other Interests in amateur radio (through Girl Guides), geneal. ogy, travelling, reading, tenpin bowling and a5 editor/publisher of a monthly circular for the Hobart Walking Club as weil as the Tasmanian square dancing magazine Stepping Out. Her experience in organi~ing many activi ties involving transport for both school and guide groups will stand her in good stead for her position in arrangrng transport and tours for next year; National. Her enthusiastic approach to the job is already paying dividends. The old adage says that if you want a job done well - ask a busy person. ThiS is certainly the case with Sue so please don't hesitate to contacxt her with any transport or travel enquiries you may have. Being so busy she would prefer to deal with your requirements by phone as she has very tittle time to reply to letters. Simply make a quid: cali, leaving your name, telephone number, and a suitable time for her to call yOlJ back. During school hours (002) 47 8398 After hours (002) 44 6604

Dear Richard,

19th August 1988.

Further to our conversation re a photography booth at the City Hall during our convention, the committee feel that it would be a good service to offer the dancers.

Would you please advise if you will be able to attend and what your requirements would be, as we do not have a lot of spare room to set up booth space we would need to know well in advance.

Thanking you.

Yours faithfully,
