Miley Cyrus ‘We Can’t Stop’ Singles Chartifacts: #1: Avicii ‘Wake Me Up’ – Fourth week at the top for Avicii. #4: One Direction ‘Best Song Ever’ (debut) – This is the Brit boy band’s sixth top ten in Australia. It comes from their forthcoming third album ‘Where Are We’. It samples The Who’s 1971 track ‘Baba O’Riley’. They last charted with ‘One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)’ (#3 Feb. ’13). #7: Ellie Goulding ‘Burn’ – The first top ten appearance for the UK songstress as a headline act. She previously hit #3 with her collaboration with Calvin Harris, ‘I Need Your Love’ (#3 Apr. ’13). #8: Karmin ‘Acapella– Moving up nine spots from its position last week, ‘Acapella’ gives Karmin their highest peak on the ARIA Charts. It beats ‘Brokenhearted’ by one spot (#9 Jul. ‘12). #20: Sebastian Ingrosso & Tommy Trash feat. John Martin ‘Reload’ – a huge 11 point leap brings this single into the top 20 for the first time. #22: Jessica Mauboy ‘To The End Of The Earth’ (debut) – The first single to be released from Mauboy’s third album. She last charted with ‘Something's Got A Hold On Me’ (#26 Mar. ’13) and previously topped the chart with ‘Burn’ (#1 Jan. ’09).

Australian band Karnivool debuts at number one on this week’s ARIA Album Chart, as Avicii dominates singles chart

#37: Calvin Harris ‘Thinking About You’ (debut) – Eighth track to hit the top 50 from Harris’ album ‘18 Months’. Five have gone on to reach the top ten.

Albums Chartifacts: #1: Karnivool ‘Asymmetry’ (debut) – Third studio album from Perth prog-rock quintet. Beats their previous best debut/peak by one spot: ‘Sounds Awake’ (#2 Jun. ’09). Second #1 album of the year for singer Ian Kenny*; his other band, Birds Of Tokyo, topped the chart for a week in March with ‘March Fires’.

*Ian Kenny has made ARIA Chart history by being the first singer to have two #1 albums in the same calendar year with two different bands. Birds Of Tokyo, topped the chart for a week in March with March Fires.

Prior to this, Jimmy Barnes (1984), Eminem (2004) and Roy Orbison (1989) all had two #1 albums in the same calendar year with solo releases, as well as their releases as members of Cold Chisel, D12 and the Traveling Wilburys, respectively.  

Jimmy Barnes (1988, 1991) Damien Leith (2007), Human Nature (2006), Delta Goodrem (2004) have all had two different albums reach number one in the same calendar year.

#6: Passenger ‘All The Little Lights’ – back in top 10 for a fourth stint, and fifteenth week overall, thanks to a five-point jump.  

#8: Selena Gomez ‘Stars Dance’ (debut) – Fourth album from American pop singer Selena Gomez. Her first to be credited solely to her (previous releases were under the name Selena Gomez & The Scene). Her previous chart best was with ‘When The Sun Goes Down’  (#14  Jul.  ’11).  

#14: Imagine Dragons ‘Night Visions’ – New peak for Las Vegas band Imagine Dragons. The previous best for this album was at the start of July when it hit #19.  

#24: Frank Ocean ‘channel ORANGE’ – A big leap to jump into the top 40 once again. Unfortunately Ocean’s first Australian tour has been cancelled after just once show, due to illness.  

#25: Jake Bugg ‘Jake Bugg’ (debut) – First appearance on the chart for this album on the back of 19 year old Bugg’s first Australian tour. His debut album was originally released in November of last year, topping the UK charts.
