Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement

• An important integrity measure.

• Assessment of the GTE requirement is based on a holistic consideration of all the applicant’s circumstances to determine whether, on balance, it is likely that the applicant is a genuine student and genuinely intends a temporary stay in Australia.

• Not designed to exclude students who develop appropriate skills to obtain further temporary visas or permanent residence through labour market programmes (eg s/c 485, SkillSelect etc)

• Has made other positive reforms, such as streamlined visa processing arrangements possible.

Streamlined Visa Processing

• What is streamlined visa processing (SVP)?

• SVP aims to assist genuine students and temporary entrants to be assessed for an Australian student visa as though they are a low immigration risk, irrespective of their country of citizenship.

• Visa applicants hold a COE for SVP and have reduced evidentiary requirements for Immigration. The education provider assesses criteria such as English language , academic capability and finances.

• Education provider responsibilities under SVP

Assessment Level Framework simplified

• From 22 March 2014, Assessment Level (AL)

Framework used for managing immigration risk

(based on nationality & student visa) reviewed.

Simplified from four to three levels AL1, AL2 and

AL3

• All AL4 reduced to AL3

• Benefits - Eg. Financial requirements for Fijian

student subclass 573 Bachelors degree reduced

from 24 to 12 months evidence of funds &

English level reduced from IELTS 6.0 to 5.5.
