From the Chairman

We have all said at one time or another twelve months is a long time. The saying could not be truer this year than any other year we have lived through, firstly from August to February much of the eastern states were ravaged by bushfires then over the last 6 months living with COVID-19 has changed the world completely.

Around the world we have witnessed countries struggling with large numbers of infection and loss of life, we are now witnessing this in our own back yard in Victoria. On behalf of AUSJET/ADCVA I thank the work of the volunteer fire fighters and health care workers for the amazing job they have done and continue to do.

I would also like to acknowledge the work of our members and non-members within our industry through the pandemic. Throughout we have provided essential services, maintaining infrastructure, pivoting to provide decontamination services, whilst looking after the safety of our people. Few outside our industry understand our contribution, well done to everyone from our operators to those responsible for ensuring compliance and safety keep up the good work.

This August we held our AGM under very different circumstances, having to change states and venue three times due to COIVID-19 out breaks and restrictions. Whilst it is always good to get together in person, we were all still able to come together via Zoom linked into a meeting out of Western Australia. I would like to thank all those who attended both in Perth and via Zoom, going forward we will make all our meetings available to interstate members through the Zoom platform

It was a very successful year for AUSJET/ADCVA, resetting the organisation providing a platform for membership growth into the future. With the help of Kieran Moran, the board developed a new Vision and Mission and strategic plan to enable AUSJET/ADVCA to achieve the following over the past year.

This year we have also engaged with the wider industry from a leadership position, inviting other associations to participate in our initiatives including the, Recommended Practices for the Use of Industrial Vacuum Equipment workbook, and the IBSA training reviews.

I would like to thank our Members for their engagement and cooperation, the Board, Gabe our Administrator and Kieran Moran for their work over the past 12 months contributing to our success.

It was pleasing to see an increased participation in this year’s board nomination with nine nominations in all for seven positions. As a result, for the first time since our incorporation a vote was held for the Board positions which resulted in the election of three new board members.

Will Lee (Emeritus Member) who has been involved at a management level over a 14-year period, is also an outgoing board member. AUSJET/ADCVA wish to make special mention of Will’s contribution over that 14-year period, having held positions of both Vice President and President. Will was also one of the main contributors to the 2013 revision of AS/NZS 4233, and the main contributor and driver in development of all our current industry training packages and units of competency. Thanks for all that hard work Will; you have made a huge contribution over those 14 years.

I am excited about the year ahead and we will be looking to engage further through online workshops and events. We continue to plan AUSJET21 which will be a great event to get along to. I am also looking forward to catching up with as many members as possible over the next 12 months.

AUSJET21 announces support program for Exhibitors

AUSJET21 is excited to announce the launch of a new Support Program that will assist companies partaking in the event. Its aim is to ensure exhibitors are supported, guided, and aided through the ‘Live Experience’ journey, providing them with the perfect runway to achieve maximum results from participating in the inaugural show.

The program, labelled “On Boarding”, will focus on how companies can maximise their participation and attendance at AUSJET21, both pre, during and post-show.

With AUSJET21 having been specially developed and with no other similar event for the industry in the market, event organisers believe having a concise document that is designed to walk exhibitors through a step by step plan of what to do and how to maximise the opportunities in their participation is vital and also beneficial for all stakeholders. Exhibitors are an essential part of any event, and it is empirical they are supported in every capacity possible.

The Onboarding Program will be supported by an industry best ‘Exhibitor Tips Booklet’ developed by Expertise Events from the best ideas over the last decade. Labelled “Time to Shine”, the booklet is made up of practical, down to earth ideas and actions that companies can implement to ensure they not only stand out but also get ROI from taking part.

Gary Fitz-Roy the show organiser said “we love what we do but the real kick is when companies exceed their expectations in the results they achieve - that’s why we have developed support material to navigate and attain those results. It’s not just a space booking, we want to build relationships that see all companies involved, maximise their return.”

‘On Boarding’ will be distributed to all confirmed exhibitors this week and new bookings will receive it once their participation in the event has been confirmed. Additionally, the ‘Time to Shine’ Exhibitor Tips Booklet will be released to all confirmed exhibitors in August to again provide some credible information and support to companies who have embarked on this exciting ‘first’ for the industry.

Partner Update

We are thrilled to announce Hammelmann have confirmed their Platinum Partnership for the inaugural event, and have also obtained the hosting rights of the ‘Network Happy Hour’ drinks which will allow the industry to connect, network and celebrate the year ahead. We are very happy to welcome one of the industry’s most well-known and esteemed companies onboard for AUSJET21.

We are also extremely excited to announce our confirmed partnership with KOR, who have come onboard as a Gold Partner of the inaugural event. KOR are industry leaders in the hydro excavation, waste recovery, drain cleaning and vacuum loading sectors.

The enthusiasm continues to grow across the board as conversations with a number of other potential partners looking to secure their involvement in the 2021 event, are progressing forward swiftly. The overall support for a dedicated event has been refreshing.

AUSJET21 is set to debut March 3-4 at the Melbourne Showgrounds, allowing for indoor and outdoor spaces and a key component of live demo arenas.

AUSJET21 strategic partnerships creates world leading industry conference and expo

THE Australasian High Pressure Water Jetting Association (AUSJET), incorporating Australasian Drain Cleaning and Vacuum Association (ADCVA), are excited to announce a strategic partnership with Trenchless Australasia, joining our events partner Expertise Events in the promotion of AUSJET21.

AUSJET21, is a dedicated water jet, drain and vacuuming technology exhibition and conference to be held at the Melbourne Showgrounds in March 2021.

AUSJET/ADCVA president Peter Jones said the media partnership between AUSJET21 facilitators Expertise Events and Trenchless Australasia was endorsed by the AUSJET/ADCVA Board prior to our August AGM.

“AUSJET/ADCVA has also agreed to closer ties with Trenchless Australasia sharing information of interest to those working with High Pressure Water and Vacuum across the trenchless technologies sector,” Mr Jones said.

Trenchless Australasia is the official publication of the Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology and is essential reading for local government and the underground infrastructure sectors and reports on the latest advancements in sustainable underground infrastructure construction and maintenance.

Managing director of Expertise Events Gary Fitz-Roy said the partnership with Trenchless Australasia adds to the strong support and enthusiasm already committed to the event.

“It’s been great working with an association and media who are committed to the success of their industry,” Mr Fitz-Roy said.

“AUSJET21 will showcase a large range of equipment, services and products, including live displays that engage all the senses and provide attendees the information they need. Demonstrations running throughout the event, as well as the conference program will provide education and training in ways only a live event can deliver.”

Mr Jones added AUSJET/ADCVA continues to broaden the association’s engagement strategy with all stakeholders involved in High Pressure Water Jetting, Vacuum Loading Drain Cleaning and Hydro Excavation to promote safety and training within the industry and encourages all within the sector to get involved or exhibit their capabilities at AUSJET21.

“AUSJET21 has received strong support from industry and sector leaders, as well as businesses, service providers and educators, with bookings of all levels being committed to after launching the event a couple of months ago,” he said.

AUSJET21 takes place over a two-day period, March 3 - 4, 2021, at the Melbourne Showgrounds. The venue has been specially curated to allow companies the opportunity to facilitate major outdoor demonstrations, whilst also taking into consideration proximity to transport, Tullamarine Airport and Melbourne City for our extensive list of interstate exhibitors and attendees.

Incident Reporting - We want to hear from you

One of the responsibilities of being a member of AUSJET/ADCVA is to report all incidents. It is important we communicate all incidents within our industry to prevent them from reoccurring and to improve industry safety both here in Australia and now globally through the GICC Global Industrial Cleaning Coalition.

All information is kept strictly confidential and can be reported through our website safety/report-an-incident-members-only/, or directly to our administrator Gabe Wardle support@ausjetinc.com.au. In all cases we request the contact details of the person reporting the incident, so we can work with them to develop an industry safety alert.

When developing the industry safety alerts any reference to the company that had the incident, or the location of the incident is removed. Prior to publishing the safety alert, we send a draft of the alert to the reporting person for their approval prior to distributing the alert to our members and on social media.

So, what should be reported?

In the past reporting has been generally around the higher consequence incidents, severe injuries, hospitalisations etc. To truly improve industry safety, we want to engage more, we would like to see all incidents involving High Pressure Water Jetting, Vacuum Loading, Drain Cleaning and Hydro Excavation reported including,

Accidents Injuries Near Misses Environmental Incident

In some circumstances we understand that some incidents may be placed under legal privilege. In these instances if possible we would request that members simply advise AUSJET/ADCVA that an incident has occurred without specific detail, then at the completion of the investigation and the period of privilege, we can then work together to develop a safety alert.

AUSJET/ADCVA Working Internationally for Safety

AUSJET/ADCVA are one of the founders of the Global Industrial Cleaning Coalition with our Board Member Lance McKay a GICC committee member. AUSJET/ADCVA is proud to be associated with making sure not just all of our members, but the entire industry worldwide is safe while doing their work every day. Following on from the GICC’s, Seven Basic Principles of High Pressure Waterjetting the GICC committee has developed Seven Basic Principles of Vacuum Truck Safety.

Seven Basic Principles of Vacuum Truck Safety

The purpose of the GICC is to help save lives and reduce injuries in the industrial cleaning industry. Our mission is to help national safety associations adopt basic cleaning principles in high pressure water jetting, municipal/vacuum truck cleaning, chemical cleaning, and respiratory protection that are easy to implement country by country. For a more detailed explanation of the above, please refer to your country’s best practices document

1. Joint Responsibility

Asset Owners, Manufacturers/Suppliers of Equipment, and Industrial Cleaning Contractors have the joint responsibility to collaboratively create and implement safety guidelines.

2. Three Areas of Focus

Safety guidelines should focus on…

Methods: use the safest possible method and processes to clean

Means: properly select and use the right type of equipment and tooling

People take personal responsibility to understand and follow safety guidelines; commit to training

3. Staff Education and Training

Operators and supervisors should be educated and trained on how to work safely and effectively and committed to ongoing and repeated training.

4. Sharing Knowledge and Continuous Learning

New developments in safe working practices should be followed and sharing of knowledge is encouraged. Each safety organization should have a reporting system for accidents and near misses.

5. Assurance of the Guidelines

Contractors and Asset Owners need to work together to ensure proper working methods are in place, only properly skilled, trained and certified people are working on-site, and that equipment being used meets proper specifications and maintenance cycle/certification as required by the manufacturer or certifying body.

6. Working With Safe Equipment

Only work with safe industrial vacuum equipment. Know and follow the manufacturer’s recommended operating and maintenance procedures.

Is my pump Class A or Class B?

One of the most important things when working with high pressure water pumps is to understand how to identify what Class the pump is, A or B as defined by AS/NZS 4233:2013. Many people do not understand that this not only applies to typical industrial high-pressure water jetting pumps but also pumps on Drain Cleaning units, Combination units and Hydro Excavation units.

The Class of the pump will determine what specific requirements you need to meet to operate the unit safely, and what level of training is required.

Relevant Standards and Guidelines

All high-pressure water jetting operations in excess of 800 bar litres per minute need to comply with the requirements of,

Pump Classes and Identification

High pressure pumps over 800 bar litres per minute are defined in to two separate Class A and Class B under AS/NZS 4233.

Class A High pressure water jetting systems with an output greater than 800 bar litres per minute and less than 5600 bar litres per minute.

Class B High pressure water jetting system with an output greater than 5600 bar litres per minute

Class B systems represent a higher risk of injury than Class A system and are therefore subject to a higher level of compliance and control.

High-pressure pumps are classified using bar litres per minute, to calculate bar litres per minute you need to multiply the maximum pressure of the pump in Bar x the maximum flow of the pump in Litres. This information should be available on the pump identification plate, in some cases, pressure and flow may be in PSI and gallon these will need to be converted prior to the calculation.

Typical examples of Class B High Pressure Pumps are as follows.

Example 1

A drain cleaning unit that has a pressure of 155 bar and a flow rate of 269 litres per minute.

155 bar x 269 lpm = 41695 bar litres per minute, which is a Class B pump subject to the operating conditions and training requirements as stated in AS/NSZ 4233:2013.

Example 2

A hydro excavation unit that has a pressure of 280 and a flow rate of 17 litres per minute

280 bar x 17 lpm = 4760 bar litres per minute, which is a Class A pump subject to the operating conditions and training requirements as stated in AS/NSZ 4233:2013.

Example 3

A hydro excavation unit that has a pressure of 280 and a flow rate of 21 litres per minute

280 bar x 21 lpm = 5880 bar litres per minute, which is a Class B pump subject to the operating conditions and training requirements as stated in AS/NSZ 4233:2013.

Training Requirements

Class A

It is a requirement of AS/NZS 4233 that operators involved in Class A operations should be trained in the following specific areas. There is no requirement for the training to be delivered through an RTO.

Class A system operation, potential dangers, problems and emergency actions to be taken should the equipment fail or malfunction

Application of pressurised water including set up, barricading and operation

Device and emergency stop controls

Hose and Equipment pre-start inspections

Personal protective equipment

Most manufacturers or distributors will have specific training available.

Class B

All people involved in the operation of Class B systems including spotters/ safety observers shall be appropriately trained and assessed as competent/capable. Training shall be delivered through an RTO and be in accordance with the high-pressure water jetting unit of competency.

Member Moments – Five minutes of your time

In this edition, AUSJET speaks with Duncan Hart, Managing Director of Silver Raven. Silver Raven has been an AUSJET member since 2009.

Q. Hi Duncan and welcome to the Ausjet Newsletter Member Moments, why don’t you tell us a little about yourself?

A. I have worked in the construction industry for 15 years starting out as a carpenter. I shifted over to the Civil industry for the last 8 years and I have been at Silver Raven for about a year.

Q. Can you tell us about the services Silver Raven provides and what industries do you work in?

A. Silver Raven is a hydro demolition and industrial cleaning company. We work in the construction, infrastructure, mining and gas industry.

Q. Has Silver Raven just successfully completed any large scale projects / shutdowns that you would like to share?

A. We have been involved in the Sydney Metro project for the last 3 years over multiple locations. This has been a challenging project from time to time due to access, time frames, staffing requirements and location of work areas.

We have also recently completed works for major shutdown at Viva energy in Geelong. With Covid-19 and crossing borders becoming harder this added another level to the complexity to the project. We were lucky enough to finish the works prior to the hard border shutdown with all workers self-isolating for 2 weeks on their return to NSW.

Q. How does Silver Raven continually facilitate ongoing safety, training and development in the industry?

A. Silver Raven runs information and trial days at our Marrickville yard where we invite clients and engineers to explain and demonstrate the Hydro industry. We run through the multiple techniques from hand lance work to robot and XY machines.

Q. What do you believe have been some of the growth areas of the HPWJ industry over the past five years and what does the next five years look like?

A. The main growth areas I see are in the high rise apartment boom across the major capital cities. There have been many cases already where the concrete structures are failing due to poor building practices. The HPWJ industry offers an alternate to traditional jack hammer methods. I believe that the more people get an understanding HPWJ and its advantages the more the industry will shift to using it.

Q. Silver Raven has been an Ausjet member since 2009, how have you found it and what are some of the benefits of being a member?

A. I have found that the engagement from other members is increasing and the opportunity to work together and push the HPWJ industry as a positive. The industry is still very small in Australia and as more people become aware of it the need to work together will increase. AUSJET is a great platform to meet other professionals with a like-minded view of the industry.

AUSJET/ADCVA welcomes our new member Pipe Management Australia based in NSW and QLD

FOR many outside of the water jetting, drain cleaning, vacuum loading and hydro excavation industry, some believe the work is dirty, dark and damp but as we know, the reality can be quite different when it comes to using current technologies in understanding and maintaining underground assets.

Typically, the only way to effectively clean and clear drains is via the use of high-pressure water to break the blockage down which is still commonly used, but for Sydney and Brisbane based company Pipe Management Australia (PMA), their philosophy is more about understanding the history of the asset by maintaining detailed records and becoming its custodian.

“Pipe Management Australia are a service provider for municipal councils and private organisations on the east coast of Australia where we identify, solve and maintain their stormwater drain networks and related utilities,” PMA General Manager Corporate Services Phil Symons said.

“It’s not about just sending a vacuum truck to perform scheduled work. For PMA, we prefer to get involved by understanding the assets through maintaining and keeping detailed records and information where we not only become the custodian of the asset, but assist our clients in becoming effective stewards of their own assets.”

For over 10 years, PMA have been helping cities, councils and private organisations to identify, solve and maintain their stormwater drain networks and related utilities. Serving the east coast of Australia, PMA operates across six core service areas – drain maintenance, gross pollutant trap cleaning, non-destructive digging, microtraxx, and CCTV inspection and patch relining.

Phil said PMA has found some pretty interesting things down the sewer and storm water networks and to understand the subterranean world better, they work in collaboration with their sister company IC Pipes where they have a mutual ownership link via the maintenance of the sewer and stormwater network.

“To understand the asset and its condition we need to clean it in order to effectively do the CCTV assessments, so we work closely with our sister company,” he said.

“We find a lot of sporting balls down the storm water inlets and gross pollutant traps as well as skateboards and other nasties however, one of the interesting things we have analysed in Queensland is the reduction of recyclable content since the government introduced the container refund scheme 12 months ago.

“For PMA it’s about understanding the underground networks as well as it’s history and for me I find the old networks or the heritage drain networks really fascinating with original brick arches and culverts especially with some of the work we’ve done for older parts of Brisbane and for Queensland Rail.”

PMA operates across the east coast of Australia and serves some of the largest councils, water utilities, private industry and infrastructure projects. They have a of over eighty staff members across four depots in Queensland and NSW and in the month of August, they celebrated 10 years of operations.

Meet a Board Member – Lance McKay

I have over 20 years’ experience with high pressure water jetting and vac Loading in the industrial services industry, servicing contracts in municipal councils, water authorities, refinery, mining, offshore and CSG oil and gas.

In my past and current leadership roles, my primary focus is to foster a culture of safety and field leadership amongst the crews, develop innovative and continuous improvement ideas to enhance safety while developing brand awareness to grow and expand the business. These roles have also allowed me to specialise in the important areas of key account management and customer relationships, including contract tenders, cost estimation, scheduling, client liaison and evaluation.

Standards and Training Update

Standards

Update from Standards Australia. Both AS 4233 1&2 projects are now waiting for GM’s approval. Standards Australia processes are taking a little longer than usual due to operational changes, but rest assure that the two Standards will be published by early September (at the very latest). NOTE: The project is still 6 months ahead of schedule.

It has also been identified that another Standard has been produced that clashes with the two HPWJ standards. The Australian Industry Group (AIG) have held two meetings so far and once the HPWJ standards are published AIG will be setting up further meetings to get alignment of standard 60335.2.79 to 4233. Peter Jones, Mark Bridger and Will Lee have represented Ausjet at the meetings.

Safe Work Australia

The revisions to the HPWJ guide are now with SWA. They are in line with the changes to the revised two standards. SWA are waiting on publication of the two HPWJ standards before releasing the revised Guide.

MSMWJ Units of Competency Review Project

This project began last year with Innovation & Business Skills Australia (IBSA) who manage our industry Units of Competencies. Due to the current situation all the meetings have been held via electronic processes.

So far the Technical Advisory Committee which includes Ausjet Members (KOR, Cleanaway, Trainright, Altrad, All-Ways Training, Into Training) produced revised draft Units of Competencies (UoCs) for Use high pressure water jetting systems, Operate a high pressure water jetting system, Operate a drain cleaning system and operate a vacuum loading system.

The initial drafts went out for public comment in May for four weeks, the Technical Advisory Committee met again in July to take on the comments and produce the second draft UoCs which a went out for public comment on 6th August and closed on 21st August. It was identified that another UoC Operate a hydro excavation system was needed. IBSA requested an extension to the project to include that UoC following support from industry.

In late August/early September: Technical Advisory Committee will be meeting to take on the comments from the second round of public comments.

The process will then be:

September: Training package quality assurance process

September/October: Project sent to states and territories for comment

October: Project sent to AISC Secretariat (Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment)

December: AISC meet (2 December) for approval

December: COAG Industry Skills Council endorsement

January: Available on national register (training.gov.au)

At the last AUSJET/ADCVA AGM, Access Law Group awarded Companion membership of Australasian High-Pressure Water Jetting Association Ltd (AUSJET/ADCVA)

Access Law Group assisted Ausjet in becoming a Company Limited by Guarantee in 2013 ensuring the process once sanctioned by Ausjet Membership was seamless.

For many years Tom Ellicott and his team at Access Law have assisted Ausjet with advice and preparation of legal documents including protection of intellectual property and licencing agreements and memorandums of understanding and contracts. Tom has also offered legal advice to the AUSJET/ADCVA Board of Management with reviews to various agreements since 2012.

The registered business address for AUSJET/ADCVA is currently the Access Law Group’s Wollongong office address.
