Capital of the state of Carinthia, Klagenfurt is situated in southern Austria, near the border with Slovenia, and is bounded on the south by the wooded ridge of the Sassnitz range, with the Karawanken rearing up behind. Founded in 1161 as a market town, Klagenfurt - or Klagenfurt am Wörthersee - is famous for its extremely attractive Old Town quarter with its picturesque lanes, historical buildings, and its many arcaded Renaissance courtyards with their trendy boutiques, galleries, and cafés. It's also famous for the old moat and canal added between 1527 and 1558, and which still links Klagenfurt to the Wörthersee, the area's largest lake. Also of interest are the city's old fortifications, marked by a circuit of streets known as the Ring, which circles the old part of the town and boasts many fine parks and gardens.

Hochosterwitz CastlePerched high atop a crag some 160 meters above the town of Launsdorf, just 21 kilometres northeast of Klagenfurt, sprawls the imposing Hochosterwitz Castle (Burg Hochosterwitz), one of Austria's most impressive castles. First mentioned in 860 AD, the castle was, for centuries, on the frontline between Europe and the Ottoman empire, but never fell. Notable features include the steep winding access road, the Burgweg, some 620 meters long and famous for its 14 gates (each of them named) and the beautiful arcaded courtyard at its end.

Other highlights include its quaint little chapel with fine wall and ceiling paintings from 1570 and the church at the south-western end with a high altar dating from 1729. Guided tours of the historical apartments are available, taking in numerous paintings and furnishings, as well as the Khevenhüller armoury.

The Pilgrimage Church of Maria SaalSt. Mary's Church in Maria Saal (Gemeinde Maria Saal), sits high on a hill some ten kilometres north of Klagenfurt and is one of the leading places of pilgrimage in Carinthia. It was here in 750 AD that Bishop Modestus consecrated a church dedicated to the Virgin, from which the surrounding area was Christianized. The current twin-towered structure was built in Gothic style in the first half of the 15th century and later remodelled during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Highlights include a number of fine old gravestones, the 16th-century Keutschach Epitaph depicting the Coronation of Our Lady, and a 3rd-century Roman stone relief of a post wagon. Other features are the Late Gothic Lantern of the Dead and the finely proportioned octagonal Romanesque charnel house, surrounded by a frescoed arcade from the early 1500s. Of interest inside are the panels above the center aisle of the Tree of Jesse, painted in 1490 and depicting the genealogy of Christ. While in the area, visit the nearby ancient Carinthian Ducal Throne (Kärtner Herzogstuhl), the double throne on which the Dukes of Carinthia once sat.

Neuer Platz and the Dragon FountainThe central feature of the newer part of Klagenfurt is the spacious Neuer Platz, home to the city's most famous landmark, the massive Dragon Fountain (Lindwurmbrunnen). Long the heraldic emblem of Klagenfurt - legend has it the city was built on a swamp inhabited by a dragon - this huge sculpture was carved by Ulrich Vogelsang in 1590 from a single block of chloritic schist, a greenstone that gives the carving its unique colouring. The figure of Hercules and the iron railings were added in 1636. Also of interest on Neuer Platz is the Trinity Column (Dreifaltigkeitssäule), added in 1689.

Klagenfurt Map – Attraction

VILLACH & SURROUNDING AREA

Villach, the second largest town in the state of Carinthia and the seventh largest in Austria, lies near the frontiers with Italy and Slovenia in the heart of the country's mountainous south. Surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery - the Villacher Alpe to the west and the Karawanken chain to the south, together with the Julian Alps to the rear - the town attracts many visitors on their way to the Carinthian lakes for their thermal springs. There was already a bridge and fortified camp here in Roman times, and by 1007, the town had passed into the control of the Bishops of Bamberg, eventually becoming part of Austria in 1759. Its location makes it the perfect spot from which to explore the spectacular Alpe-Adria area, a designated bioregion encompassing parts of Austria, Italy, and Slovenia.

Villach Main SquareStraddling the River Drau and connected by several bridges, Villach's old town centre is one of the most picturesque in southern Austria. A good place to begin exploring is the long Main Square (Hauptplatz), which cuts across the middle of the old town, linked by the main bridge over the Drau at its northern end with the parish church at its southern end. The Trinity Column from 1739 stands in the dodie ste®eo p®odu©tion ™ Page 14 of 43 REV III (2010)

middle of the square, which also boasts a number of fine old merchant's homes, notably the Alte Post and the 16th century Paracelsus Hof.

Villach's Fine ChurchVillach is home to a number of fine old churches, one of the most impressive being the Holy Cross Church (Heiligenkreuzkirche), a coral pink edifice constructed in the 18th century and popular among photographers for its ornate twin towers. Highlights of the church's attractive interior include the excellent frescoes in the vaults added in the 1960s. Another Villach church of note is the Parish Church of St. Jakob, a three-aisled 14th century Gothic hall church with a narrow choir and a 95-meter tower linked to the main building by an arched gateway. Interior highlights include the splendid Baroque canopied altar from 1740 with its large early 16th century Gothic crucifix, and a huge fresco of St. Christopher also from 1740.

The oldest artefacts include a stone pulpit from 1555 and, in the baptistery, a Gothic font and choir stalls from 1464. The Parish Church of St. Martin is also notable for its Baroque high altar with a Late Gothic Madonna, while the 18th century Parish Church of St. Kreuz boasts an unusual three-story façade with twin towers and is notable for its richly decorated altars and pulpit.

Sankt Peter in Holz and the Millstätter SeeJust 49 kilometres northwest of Villach is the quaint village of Sankt Peter in Holz, built near a former Celtic (and later Roman) settlement known as Teurnia. After 600 AD, Teurnia was evacuated, its stone buildings torn down to build a defensive wall around the hilltop.

Excavations have since brought to light a Roman forum with thermal baths, remnants of the old walls, and the foundations of numerous houses. Teurnia was also the see of a bishop and the walls of the old church, along with their old paintings, can still be seen. A guesthouse (hospitium) was also uncovered, along with a marble tablet and parts of a cross. A museum in the village provides an interesting account of the old settlement and its eventual demise. A pleasant side trip is the popular tourist town of Döbriach on the Millstätter See, a large alpine lake. You'll be rewarded with a chance to visit a Late Gothic church with splendid tracery windows and fine Baroque altars, as well as the opportunity to enjoy a number of pleasant walking trails.

Hochosterwitz CastleHochosterwitz is a wonderful old castle that looks exactly as a castle is supposed to look—majestically capping a very precipitous miniature mountain and displaying a hodgepodge of turrets, thick walls, and towers. This castle would certainly do justice to a fairy tale. The castle is visible long before you actually arrive and impossible to miss. You cannot drive up to Hochosterwitz, so park your car, put on your sturdy shoes, and start your hike. It will take you about half an hour to walk to the castle, but the walk is really the essence of the castle and a sightseeing excursion in its own right. Ascending the hill, you pass through a succession of 14 gates designed by the most famous castle-fortification architect of the Middle Ages. Thanks to his skill,

the castle was never conquered. You will soon see why this stronghold was never conquered. Each gate has its own unique brand of protection—one has holes through which hot oil was poured upon the invader, another has a moat, another a drawbridge, another hidden spikes, another fire-torch slots, and so on. If the enemy was clever enough to conquer one gate, he was sure to be defeated before the final entrance. Just as you draw close to the top, a path leads off to a beautiful little chapel on a ledge overlooking the valley far below. Take the time to walk over to it. Not only is the view lovely, but the church interior is splendid in its combination of simple white walls and ornate gold altar.

Elli Riehl’s PuppenweltElli Riehl, who was born in Villach in 1902, always wanted a “little house in the mountains.” When she became a widow at the age of 28, she fulfilled her dream and moved to a small farmhouse in the country. She loved being out of doors and took long walks where she became friends with all the local families and adored all their children. Elli then began to make dolls based on the people in the valley, concentrating especially on young children. Elli Riehl’s passion for dolls continued until she died in 1977. A small farmhouse next to her workshop has been converted into a museum, beautifully displaying in

glass cases over 600 examples of her work. Each of the small dolls is a masterpiece, exquisitely crafted and dressed to perfection with clothes all sewn by Elli. Do not pass up this museum—even if you aren’t much interested in dolls, this exhibition is enchanting. I promise you will come away smiling. The

whimsical, happy children and adults depicted are absolutely irresistible.37 Km from Klagenfurt town centre. The path zigzags up the hill crossing fortified bridges, little moats, drawbridges, and, most fascinating of all, through 14 gates, each with its unique way to do in the enemy. Some gates have walls with spiked doors that descend from the ceiling, others have holes for hot oil, others inner rooms to capture the invader. It is lots of fun. leading off to an exquisite little chapel. Be sure to take the detour because the chapel is as pretty inside as it is out. Once you have conquered your castle, there is nothing of special interest—a small museum of arms, a few pictures, and a very

nice courtyard—the fun is in the approach. There is a nice restaurant in the courtyard for lunch or a glass of wine.70 Km from Klagenfurt town centre. (Approximate).

WeissenseeThe Weissensee, our favorite lake in Austria awaits you. From the town of

Greifenburg where you leave the main highway and turn south, following signs to the Weissensee. This is a spectacularly beautiful drive: the road curves up through lush green meadows and over a small pass to a high Alpine lake, the Weissensee. The Weissensee is still “country”—the relatively few hotels are basically converted farmhouses nestled along the lake. Except for a small village at the end of the lake, the entire eastern half of the Weissensee is a nature preserve—off limits to any commercial development. Ferries circle the lake, but they are mostly for dropping off passengers who want to hike along the beautiful path that completely encircles the pristine water. The lake is an incredible emerald-green colour and in the early morning and late evening mirrors the steep green hills that rise precipitously along its eastern half in a fjord-like beauty. The western half of the lake is surrounded by more gentle hills that melt down into green lawns extending to the shoreline. There is no beach, but lounge chairs dot the grass and piers extend through the reeds into the water. The activities along the Weissensee are simple—no great sites to visit, just the splendour of nature at its finest. Linger here and enjoy fishing, swimming, boating, and long walks. A reader wrote that one of the most spectacular hikes he has taken was from Neusach to the Domitenblick ferry stop. This is about a two-hour, challenging hike along the lake. When you reach Domitenblick, you can hop on a boat for the return journey.75 Km from Klagenfurt town centre. (Approximate).

Gottweig AbbeyGottweig Abbey dominates the top of a hill across from the town of Krems. Although it is far in the distance on the right bank of the river, it appears quite dramatic and beautiful in the late afternoon sunlight due to its immense size.81 Km from Klagenfurt town centre. Dachstein Ice CavesAnother “must” from Hallstatt is a visit to the Ice Caves, or Dachsteineishöhle. To reach the caves, follow the road around the south end of the lake towards the town of Obertraun. As you near the town, watch for the sign for the road that branches to the right to the Dachsteineishöhle. The name says it all—Dachstein Mountains ice hole. But it is much more: even if caverns are not your “thing,” give these a try—it is a real adventure. Park in the designated car park by the gondola building, then buy a ticket and wait your turn. There are several choices for ticket purchase since the gondola climbs to various stages of the mountains for the convenience of skiers and hikers. You want the Eishöhle, which will be well marked. When you

reach the top, there is about a 20-minute hike up a trail to the ice caves. The walk is a bit strenuous but the path is well maintained and the views as you stop to catch your breath are glorious—you have a bird’s-eye view of the Hallstätter See. When you reach the entrance to the caves, you must wait until the guide arrives—usually a handsome, athletic “outdoorsy” type. When the group is ready, you follow the leader into the cavern. At first it does not seem anything special, just another enormous cave. Be patient though, because as the trail winds deeper into the earth, the walls of rock gradually become walls of ice. You enter a magic kingdom where you are surrounded by translucent, ever-changing, mysterious forms of ice. To enhance the scene, at the most spectacular displays the guide turns on colour lights that fade, then brighten, then shade into rainbow colours.114 Km from Klagenfurt town centre. (Approximate).

Roman Catholic ChurchWith addition to the museums there are two churches. A lovely one sits on the main square, but the more dramatic is the Roman Catholic Church, reached by a winding staircase from the center of town. Be sure to go inside to see the beautiful altarpiece painted in the 16th century and given to the church by a wealthy wine merchant.115 Km from Klagenfurt town centre. (Approximate).

Salt MinesAnother trip, just a few kilometers from Hallstatt, is a must—the Salt Mines. For this excursion drive to the nearby town of Lahn where you will see signs to the funicular. Park your car and take the funicular up the steep incline, where you find at the top a restaurant with a spectacular panorama of the lake and mountains. After a cup of coffee or some lunch, follow the signs to the salt mines. The path leads across a meadow and up a hill—about a ten-minute walk—to the main lounge where you buy a ticket and wait until your tour number is called. Then follow the guide into what looks like a locker room where pyjama-like outfits are hanging according to sizes—small, medium, and large. Here you put on loose scrub-suit-like pants and tops over your clothing. After a few laughs you continue with your guide into the tunnel.

The guide will probably not speak English, but if you have visited the mining museum in Hallstatt, you will certainly get the general idea of what is being said as you tag along with the group along a route that descends deeper and deeper into the earth. You will not need an interpreter when you arrive at the gigantic wooden slide worn smooth as velvet over the years, one of those placed at strategic points to speed the miners’ journey underground. Those still young at heart will love the ride, but for the less adventurous, a staircase parallels the slide to the bottom where you again follow the leader as you weave through a labyrinth of tunnels. (You will quickly see why you need your guide.) Before your adventure is over, you will have conquered another slide, seen an underground lake, had an audio-visual lecture on the caves (you probably will not understand a word), and walked for an hour. The tour ends dramatically. The group climbs up on a small train which consists of bench-like cars; then, once all are, the brake is released and the train zips down the incline for about a kilometre and out again into the open air. A true adventure.115 Km from Klagenfurt town centre. (Approximate).

GosauseeFrom Gosaua a road branches to the south to the spectacularly lovely little lake, Gosausee. Although tiny, this lake is definitely worth a side trip. Rock walls rise straight up from the depths of the lake enclosing the dark-blue waters in a majestic embrace. The mighty peaks of the Dachstein Mountains form a backdrop for this beautiful stage setting. Try to arrive at the lake before 9 am for two reasons—in early morning on a clear day the surface of the lake is like a mirror reflecting the mountains in all their glory, and in early morning the busloads of tourists have not yet arrived. Take a walk around the lake:

there is a magnificent trail that takes about an hour to complete.119 Km from Klagenfurt town centre. (Approximate).

Bergbaumuseum Klagenfurt The underground tunnels and burrows of today's Mining Museum exist - except for the hall of the Carinthian mining (Rock Hall) for almost 60 years. The tunnel system was built between 1942 and 1944 as a bomb shelter for the civilian population of Klagenfurt, parts of which were planned as an underground military hospital. In the 47 bombing of Klagenfurt about 70%

of the structures of the state capital were destroyed; and yet relatively few deaths - 512 people - were killed. Due to these Bomb Shelters thanks can be given to this safe haven originally planned for 1800, and actually provided up to 7,000 people. It has also been recorded that at one time 20000 people were seeking protection at these shelters. Now the Mining Museum Klagenfurt has an extensive collection of minerals with emphasis Carinthia. In the paleontological department the fossilized remains of plants and animals (fossils) are presented in past geological eras. To clarify the phylogenetic evolution of organisms to today's forms is the main objective of Palaeontology (geology). A portion of the museum deals with the patron saint of miners, St. Barbara.

Carinthian Museum of Modern ArtThe Carinthian Museum of Modern Art, with an exhibition area of some 1,000m², holds solo and theme shows of works by young as well as established regional, national and international artists.

Carinthia, which includes distinguished protagonists of the 20th and 21st centuries, such as Hans Bischoffshausen, Kiki Kogelnik, Maria Lassnig, Hermann Nitsch, Hans Staudacher and, representing the younger generation, Heimo Zobernig and Hans Schabus.

The "Burgkapelle" art space is available to young artists for projects. The arcade on the upper floor houses a permanent exhibition of objects and sculptures.

If one stays longer in Klagenfurt or a Carinthia resort, one could consider toring further afield in the Alps- Adriatic Region:-

The Alps-Adriatic RegionThree Countries in a Single Day

Carinthia, Slovenia and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (Italy): three countries, three regions, three cultures.  Each one unique, but closely interrelated – in customs, in cuisine and in attitude towards life. In a single day, you can hear three different languages and experience three cultures, view an idyllic Alpine landscape from mountain peaks, and savour a cappuccino on the Mediterranean. In addition to the many natural attractions of the Alps-Adriatic Region, you’ll want to take in the lively and historic old towns of Klagenfurt, Villach, Ljubljana or Udine. Visit the quaint town of Bled in Slovenia. Fascinating excursions can lead you to Trieste or Venice. The intermingling of these three cultures has left behind many traces, not least in the local cuisine. Carinthian Kasnudeln or “cheese noodles” bear more than a passing resemblance to Italian ravioli, and the Carinthian Reindling bundt cake is well-known in in Friuli as “gubana” and in Slovenia as “pohaca”.Another great way of discovering the area is the Alpe Adria Trail – a varied ~700 km path through the region. It can be toured in individual stages (usually 40 stages), this unique long-distance hiking route takes the visitor from the foot of the Großglockner, Austria’s highest mountain, through the scenic Carinthian Alpine lake landscape where Austria, Italy and Slovenia come together, and onward to the Adriatic at Trieste.Excursions in Carinthia (Austria):
