The Cobo Project Management + VIA Design Studio team is pleased to submit this preliminary study for the New University Center at the American University of Nigeria and we hope to meet all your educational and design vision requirements.

At Cobo Construction + VIA Design Studio, we understand this is a critical endeavor for AUN and we feel that our team has the expertise and experience to align your goals to our design to deliver a successful project.

AUN - American University of Nigeria

The American University of Nigeria is a dynamic agent of change, promoting civil society and economic development in the region. It provides its students with the tools to achieve both personal growth and material success and will be a model for the country and the region of new pedagogical approaches in post-secondary education. AUN will promote understanding among diverse national, ethnic, and religious groups and promote an understanding of and appreciation for the history, culture, and intellectual achievements of the peoples of West Africa and Africa. AUN will be a comprehensive university offering undergraduate and graduate programs of the highest quality in the entire major areas of human enquiry. The University, through its support of original research, will create and disseminate new knowledge and employ an American approach to curriculum and pedagogy. The university will have a modern, spacious, and attractive campus, employing state-of-the-art facilities and equipment with a diverse, international community of teachers and learners, recruiting the finest faculty and enrolling the best students from Nigeria, West Africa, and around the world. The University will be known internationally as a centre of excellence in entrepreneurship/business and in technology. Given the challenging conditions facing higher education institutions in Nigeria, AUN stands poised to become a premier university in West Africa. It is designed to provide a world-class institution at home for high achieving students unable to study abroad. AUN expects to train the future leaders of West Africa and to serve as an agent of economic development throughout the region providing the skills and the leadership essential to solving the continents pressing social and economic problems. The University is committed to educating students to develop critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, and lifelong learning skills needed for success in contemporary society and workplaces.

AUN UNIVERSITY CENTER

The new AUN - University Center will be a state-of-the-art facility providing a new realm of student life to AUN students which will go a long way towards teaching outside of the classroom. Through recreational uses, academic lectures and overall interactions of students, faculty and staff within the new Student Center, students will learn through the newly found synergies which will further enhance the overall goal of the American University of Nigeria.

The Center will include a variety of meeting spaces, auditorium, recreational and dining facilities both for direct pedagogical teaching, impromptu learning and overall leasure. These new flexible spaces will work interchangeably to adjust to the various needs of the University, its students, faculty and staff to host a myriad of uses while enticing serendipitous interactions to flourish.

The Student Center for the Student Center for the American University of Nigeria should have the following considerations:

1. PHASED CONSTRUCTION - Due to the nature of the layout of the building, it could be built from one to four phases for delivery for earlier occupation of the spaces

2. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT - Such systems as solar panels and rain water collection systems can be incorporated into the design to lower the TCO (Total Cost of Building Ownership)

3. QUADRANT DESIGN - The proposed quadrant design allows for smaller areas to exist and thus use smaller air conditioning systems more prevalent in Yola

4. CENTER COURTYARD - The cross corridors can be open air ventilated but be provisioned to be closed at any point to be air conditioned spaces as need be

5. SYNERGIES OF SPACE - The quadrant design, crossing corridors and center courtyard spaces allow for the creation of a vibrant core to the building that works as spill over space for all large areas and shared uses such as restrooms. These corridors will truly become available areas for students, faculty and staff for impromptu interactions for learning opportunities
