IN THIS ISSUE August/September 2017 If you were to walk into the Rohde household today, you wouldn’t have to be there too long before you’d hear someone cry — the baby could be hungry, our two-year-old could be throwing one of his lovely tantrums, or I might be sobbing on the pao because our five -year-old is growing up too fast. Our son is at that tricky stage of development where he can’t always express what he wants or what he’s thinking…the “terrible twos.” To make things more difficult, he’s hing the stage right when there is a lot of transion in our home. We’re doing our best to listen and pay aenon to his needs, even when it’s difficult. In the same way that my wife and I have to adapt to our son’s developmental stage to understand and communicate with him, our church needs to learn and adapt to the changing needs around us to communicate effecvely within our community, both on and off campus. Whether it’s a Sunday message or a mid-week meeng, so much of what we do hinges on how we communicate. As a church, our goal isn’t to entertain or to put on a program. Our goal is to live into the community that Christ has called us to be in this corner of Hunngton Beach. One of the main components of that calling is engaging one another in faith conversaons. Whether those conversaons take place in a formal small group, at Sunday brunch aſter church or online, we grow as we interact with Scripture and with one another. I invite you to join the conversaon, to listen to one another and to share your own stories. If you haven’t explored our website, Facebook page or blog, visit them. If you were to walk into the Rohde household today, you wouldn’t have to be there too long before you’d hear someone cry — the baby could be hungry, our two-year-old could be throwing one of his lovely tantrums, or I might be sobbing on the patio because our five-year-old is growing up too fast. Our son is at that tricky stage of development where he can’t always express what he wants or what he’s thinking…the “terrible twos.” To make things more difficult, he’s hitting the stage right when there is a lot of transition in our home. We’re doing our best to listen and pay attention to his needs, even when it’s difficult.

In the same way that my wife and I have to adapt to our son’s developmental stage to understand and communicate with him, our church needs to learn and adapt to the changing needs around us to communicate effectively within our community, both on and off campus. Our goal is to live into the community that Christ has called us to be in this corner of Huntington Beach. One of the main components of that calling is engaging one another in faith conversations. Whether those conversations take place in a formal small group, at Sunday brunch after church or online, we grow as we interact with Scripture and with one another. From the award-winning creators of Fireproof and Courageous comes War Room, a compelling drama with humor and heart that explores the power that prayer can have on marriages, parenting, careers, friendships, and every other area of our lives. Tony and Elizabeth Jordan have it all – great jobs, a beautiful daughter, and their dream house. But appearances can be deceiving. Tony and Elizabeth Jordan’s world is actually crumbling under the strain of a failing marriage. While Tony basks in his professional success and flirts with temptation, Elizabeth resigns herself to increasing bitterness. But their lives take an unexpected turn when Elizabeth meets her newest client, Miss Clara, and is challenged to establish a “war room” and a battle plan of prayer for her family. As Elizabeth tries to fight for her family, Tony’s hidden struggles come to light. Tony must decide if he will make amends to his family and prove Miss Clara’s wisdom that victories don’t come by accident.

OC Office on Aging Launches OC Senior Resources Mobile App

At the South County Senior Summit in May, hosted by Supervisor Lisa Bartlett, Fifth District, in Laguna Woods, the Orange County Office on Aging announced it launched the OC Senior Resources mobile application. The free mobile app allows the public to easily access senior services and resources, such as disability services, caregiver support, employment, education, financial assistance, and insurance. Additional features allow individuals to seek hotline numbers, behavioral health services, veteran benefits and volunteer opportunities. "We're always looking for new ways to increase engagement with the senior members of our community and their families," said Supervisor Bartlett. "With so many county residents using smartphones and tablets, we are excited to offer this mobile-friendly countywide resource tool for young-at-heart constituents," said Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Michelle Steel, Second District Supervisor. The OC Senior Resources mobile app is available for download on Android, iPhone and iPad. Simply search "OC Senior" on the App Store or Google Play.

Wednesday, September 6, 2017 Pot Luck 6:00 p.m. and Rehearsal 7:00 p.m.

It's hard to believe that summer is almost over, and we all know what that means...it's time for the new Choir season! That's right! We're warming up our relaxed vocal chords, dusting off our choir folders, clearing Wednesday night's on our calendars, rounding up those delicious new recipes for Choir potlucks, but, mostly, we are ready to serve God with our singing on Sunday mornings, and we are hoping you will join us this new season. Our first rehearsal is Wednesday, September 6. We are starting with our annual potluck at 6:00 p.m. in the Family Worship Center, then we will begin rehearsal at 7:00 p.m. New member? Be our guest, bring your appetite, and your voice. We will provide the rest! No previous experience necessary - just a desire to sing and join this great group! Questions? Please feel free call the church office (714-846-6641) or e-mail [email protected]. Your voice matters!

Ever thought about joining the choir? Now is your chance. On Sunday, August 20 the Congregational Choir will present the anthem during the offertory in the 9:00 a.m. service. We will be singing a familiar hymn and will meet at 8:00 a.m. in the Family Worship Center to rehearse. Anyone from the congregation may join the choir to sing our anthem for the day. If you love to sing we encourage you to come forward. You may sit with your family and friends during the rest of the service. Wear what you normally wear to church and join in. Hope to see you in the choir loft on August 20!
