Construction on walking trail to commence August 2013It has been over 20 years since Samson Cree Nation has been wanting to build a trail along 611 East and has worked towards that. When Samson Cree Nation approached Alberta Transportation in November 2012 they were very interested in a trail construction and asked to assist. Alberta Transportation took the leading role with the planning stages. Not knowing much about trail construction, as they only build roads, they have then provided and completed work on the initial survey of the trail, identified its cross sections, its wetlands, and where to stake on its right of way. While Alberta Transportation was busy on the surveys, Samson Cree Nation was able to continue

with its own research, identify its own funding, all its natural resources and manpower to work on con-struction of the trail. Although there are many hours of planning and preparation that still needs to occur, this is an community and equipment based project and will require not more than 3-6 people for its con-struction. Construction will commence in August 2013 and should be completed by November 2013. The nation is very excited and ask that extra atten-tion be taken along 611 East during the construction of the Trail. We look forward to providing ongoing updates regarding its progress. Your excitement pro-vides much encouragement and support.

Maskwacis Minor Hockey BanquetAt the Four Nations Arena on July 24th the Minor Hockey Association held a Summer BBQ with special guest NHL tough guy Arron Asham. Asham is a metis from Portage la Prairie, Manitoba and currently plays right wing for the New York Rangers. Asham started his hockey career playing with the Red Deer Rebels in the WHL and has now played for all 5 teams in the Atlantic division during his career. There were close to 300 players registered with the Maskwacis Minor Hockey eague this past hockey

season. Everyone that attended the BBQ received an auto-graphed photo of Asham and a minture hockey stick. Along with other autographed merchandise, Asham donated two tickets to a New York Rangers game in New York city with airfare for 2. The lucky winner of the tickets was 11 year old Cole Brown. We are looking forward to another great year of hockey!



The Library ShowcaseManisha Khetarpal believes everyone should be able to access books and the library showcase was a step in that direction. The library showcase brought alot of people to the Maskwacis Cultural College on Wednesday, July 17. Manisha has started a self check out system for people to read books. Manisha has also set up a ‘Library in a Box’ lending service. With this service boxes of books have been sent to public buildings in the community for com-munity members to sign out, read and return or to hol dreading circles. These boxes of books are then brought back to the Library and exchanged for oth-ers. Organizations that have been utilizing this ser-vice are Young Spirit Winds, Ermineskin Daycare, youth programming at the Jim Rattlesnake building and the Soup Kitchen. These ‘Library in a Box’ can be organized by theme or you can also select your own books for your Library in a Box. The goal of the “Library in a Box” is to strengthen reading capacity of service providers for children, youth and families by providing resources for reading circles and story times. During the Showcase they were other events going on in the college such as “Lets Talk Science” where 2 recent graduates from U of A talked to the children about DNA and showed them how they looked by building them with candy and toothpicks.Jerry Saddleback held a cultural day by teaching people how to build a teepee and after they were finished making one they sat and talked while eating soup and bannock in the teepee.The BBQ was provided by ATCO gas and all procedes went to the college.There are still hundreds of books that need to be sorted. H.O.P.E. Scholars Natonhood TourThe time has finally come for the H.O.P.E Schoalrs Nationhood Tour participants to depart on their adventure, touring various First Nations communities. These students will be observing how other Nations have devel-oped and over come their own obstacles on the path of soverignty. They will be creating friendship treaties with communities they visit. The students will participate in the Samson Cree Nation Celebration parade and grand entry prior to depature on the morninfg of August 11th. Please come out and show support for these young leaders.



Walk for Water

From Fiji in to 2011 to Africa in 2012, Ashley Dennehy is certainly pursuing her dreams and passion to assist in developing Nations. Dennehy organized a ‘Walk for Water’ on July 19 in Samson Cree Nation on to fundraise to build a suatainable borehole in Zambia, Africa. Along with pledges and donations from those that par-ticipated in the walk, donations from the charity checkstop and sponsorship from Worley Parsons $4233.00 was raised towards Dennehys’s cause. Dennehy will be traveling to Zambia, Africa in June of 2014 with other Samson Cree Nation members to compete this project for sustainable drinking water for people in Zambia.

Sometimes we all need to be there for each other, Mason Buffalo started this event last year and this his second year organizing the event. Walking in Spirit: A Healing Journey is a Suicide Awareness walk where communities from all Four Nations came and walked on July 20 from 611east 6mile to the Howard Buffalo Memorial Centre, and at the end of the walk had a memorial balloon release.



“Building Self-esteem” was the focus for the Youth Day Camps for the months of July and August. The program was put together by Shawna Potts, Sandy Palmer and Samson Youth and Sports Development to get the children out of the house during the sum-mer to have fun and learn about different things such as self-esteem, caring and kindness. The youth that participated did many activities from Arts + Crafts, Sports, learning about the environment and how to live a healthy lifestyle.

Tour of Alberta

Come out and support Canada’s Pro Cycling

Festival. The tour will be passing through Mask-

wacis on September 5th between 12:00pm

- 1:00pm. The Local RCMP will request the

assistance of the public in ensuring Highway 2A from 12:00 -2:00pm in Northbound & South-bound Directions will be blocked during the

time the tour passes the Maskwacis Communi-ties. For more informa-

Bicycle RodeoThe Hobbema Health Center hosted another bicycle rodeo this year at the Four Nations Arena. Community members were welcome to bring their bikes for a safety inspection, ride through the obstacle course and learn proper hand signals from RCMP members. A number of bicycles and oth-er prizes were raffled off. Thank you to the staff and vol-unteers for organizing such a great event!

World Famous Artists will be visiting Maskwacisfor her very large paintings exploring a number of themes pertaining to indigenous culture. A larger scale painting of an eagle by Angela will be donated to a Canadian Museum in the name of the Samson Cree Nation. In addition, a smaller scale edition of the painting will be received by Chief Marvin Yellowbird on behalf of the Samson Cree Nation. Holly Johnson, the Chairman of the SCN Pow Wow Committee stated: “We are truly blessed and hon-ored that Francisco, Angela and their family would travel all the way from South America to attend our Pow Wow Celebration” It is great coming together of indigenous cultures from each Continent. Presentation will be made the first evening of the Samson Pow Wow at 6:30 p.m. Friday August 9, 2013. Everyone is welcome!

World famous vi-sual artists Fran-cisco Gazitua and Angela Leible will be traveling from Santiago, Chile, in South America to attend the 2013

Samson Cree Nation Celebration in August.This husband and wife team have exhibited in ma-jor galleries and museum collections throughout the world. Francisco Gazitua specializes in large scale sculptures made of steel, stone or work. These artworks are dis-played in front of large office towers and public ar-eas. Recently he began a series of works based on feathers. Francisco states that they carry multiple lay-ers of meaning. The spiritual symbolism of the eagle feather in South American culture and that of First Nations in North America is very similar. Francisco believes indigenous ancestral roots and traditions bind us as members of a common family. The eagle feather is his connection between North and South.Angela Leible is a well known South American visual artist who had exhibited throughout the world and is collected by major museums. She is well known




On Tuesday July 9, 2013 Maskwacis RCMP and Maskwacis Detachment executed a Search Warrant under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act on a residence on the Ermineskin First Nation. RCMP seized Canna-bis Marihuana and subsequent investigation led to a seizure of a sub-stance believed to be “Crack”. As a result charges have been laid against two males. James SMALL aged 39 of Ermineskin First Nation has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance for the purpose of Trafficking and Posses-sion of Property obtained by Crime. Also charged is Jessy CRIER aged 23 of Hobbema has also been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking and Possession of Property ob-tained by Crime.

On Thursday July 18, 2013 Maskwacis RCMP Community Response Unit and General Duty members execut-ed a search warrant on the Ermineskin First Nation, under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.A search of the residence resulted in the seizure of Cannabis Marihuana and Cocaine in powder form. Mask-wacis RCMP have arrested a 27 year old male resident of the Ermineskin First Nation. Shawn WOLFE is facing charges of Possession of A Controlled Substance and Possession of a Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking. WOLFE was also charged with possession of Ammunition while prohibited.

Recently the Hobbema RCMP members have been giving out good deed tickets. Community members are being recongized for good deeds such as using the crosswalk or wearing helmets while biking.
