I n o u r t r a d i t i o n , Shabbat is often d e f i n e d a s a time for spiritual reflection, quality time with our families, a time to gather as a community or a break from our

routine. For me, in addition to all of the above, it is a time for renewal and an opportunity to create uplifting and joyful Shabbat services. If services become routine and tedious, why would I want to come to them every week?

In an attempt to renew ourselves, bringing back aspects of what was known here at PJTC as the alternative service, Rabbi Grater and I are creating a monthly Shabbat morning experience called Shabbat Rinah, literally, a Shabbat of joy and gladness. This service will take place once a month in addition to our traditional service, which will be lay-led.

Last March we introduced Shabbat Rinah and davened with more than 80 congregants. Their feedback was to continue these Shabbat services as an alternative to the traditional service. In addition to Justin Stein, who joined us and played the guitar, we will be introducing many other instruments to enhance the service.

This Shabbat service, inspired in our tradition, highlights singing and praying, a time for contemplation, silence and meditation.

Here are the dates and times of Shabbat Rinah:

September 13, October 25, November 15, January 10, February 28, March 28, April 18, May 16, June 20, and more to come!

Please join us for these Shabbatot at 9:30 AM to have schnapps and schmooze. Services will start at 9:50 AM. We will join with the traditional service for our Kiddush lunch around noon.

G r e e t i n g s f r o m y o u r newly-installed S i s t e r h o o d President! I am h o n o r e d a n d excited to accept

this position, and I feel extraordinarily fortunate to have so many capable people backing me up. In addition to the support our Sisterhood members give each other, we are all connected to other talented and energetic women throughout the country and across the globe through our parent organization, Women’s League of Conservative Judaism (WLCJ). By the time you read this, Carolyn Siegal and I will have attended the WLCJ National Convention, the perfect springboard into a new term. I attended a WLJC Shabbaton in May, where I was introduced to the wealth of resources the organization provides, I encourage every Sisterhood member to explore their website: www.wlcj.com.

I am often asked “Other than preparing the Onegs on Friday night and handing out Kiddush cups to b’nai mitzvah, what does Sisterhood do?” It seems there is widespread under-appreciation of the broad range of Sisterhood activities. Therefore, the initial focus of my term as President will be to inform the congregation of the many ways we serve the community. A few of the goals in our Mission Statement, and examples of the ways we meet those goals, are:

“Sponsor and promote educational and cultural activities in the congregation.” We have sponsored annual educational work shop s on Wome n’s L e ag u e International Day of Study, and we support a broad range of programs at our monthly Rosh Chodesh meetings.

“Contribute to the support of Jewish and Hebrew education.” We provide substantial support to LBSRS for festivals and other special programs, graduations, teacher education, and gifts to the b’nai mitzvah students. In addition, we provide regular support to both Chaim Weizmann Day School and B’nai Simcha Preschool.

“Work for Torah Fund.” We raise thousands of dollars every year culminating at our Chay’ay Olam luncheon to support the seminaries of the Conservative/Masorti Movement.

“Foster Jewish practice in the home.” This year, Sisterhood produced a cookbook with recipes carefully selected to be appropriate for kosher kitchens, and each year we send our first-year college students special care packages with all the essentials to enable them to celebrate two Jewish holidays while in school (their home away from home).

Under the heading “What has Sisterhood done for us lately?” I urge everyone to take a look at the new and improved Wohlmann kitchen. That space has served the entire PJTC community through many years, for shabbatot and festivals, religious school activities, individual simchas, and every imaginable kind of community meeting. After all that wear and tear, the space was showing its age. Now the kitchen has received a substantial upgrade in both functionality and aesthetics. Many thanks go to the women of Sisterhood who gave so much of themselves to make this happen and to the PJTC Board for their support of this successful project.

Our Sisterhood members know the many ways we advance these and other goals. I hope the broader community will soon have a better appreciation of our activities.

It's Happening with Sisterhood!by Debbie Guest, Sisterehood President

Host an Oneg!

Do you have an event to celebrate at one of our Onegs following Friday Shabbat Services? How about a birthday, an anniversary, an upcoming or belated engagement or wedding celebration, the birth of a grandchild, a college graduation, a new job or promotion, a book publication or anything else wonderful to share with your PJTC family? Please host an Oneg.

Are you a member of our meditation group, a Mah Jongg or bridge group, the Theatre Havurah, an adult education class or one of the basketball players? Organize your group and please host an Oneg.

Contact Arlene Weiss, Sisterhood Oneg Chair, or Bruce or Eitan at PJTC to reserve your date. We will provide you with a set of instructions to guide you through the details. Many dates are still available.

Israel MattersThis article came to us via Anita & Jeff Landau’s son Josh.

Rabbi Neil Blumofe, from Josh’s synagogue, Agudas Achim in Austin, Texas, attended the funeral of the three slain Israeli teenagers. These are his words. Attending The Funeral Of Eyal, Gilad, And Naftali

It starts early, with a long caravan of chartered buses – and cars, left abandoned, parked haphazardly, close to the barricades. And in the dusty heat, with the sun bearing down overhead, the people come by the tens of thousands, walking the narrow roads, uphill for miles, to stand in the bright sunlight, to offer simple presence to each other, and especially to the families of the three boys who, 18 days earlier, had been abducted and killed.

As we stood, or sat in the ribbons of slim shade, as the crowd continued to swell and many fainted and were medically assisted, a soft sound began to rise – a wave of voices intoning melodies intended to heal, greeting people as we pressed together. Gentle niggunim, which cut a hole in the heaviness, and then soared, in the stillness of the air.

And then silence, later than expected, as the three ambulances slowly approached, and the boys in the gurneys, wrapped in the garments of the dead, and each draped in a flag of our people – our people over the ages, killed by terror, wanton aggression, and war – were laid to rest, side by side, in a cemetery in Modi’in.

This was Israel – we rose, as the Kaddish was chanted, and the brief eulogies were given – one by a beloved teacher, one by a Chief Rabbi, one by a Prime Minister, and one by the nonagenarian President. And really, what could be said?

What was said was in the footsteps of the faithful and the respectful – those who braved the heat to walk so far to stand with people they never knew – to lend their sweat to the cause of living and to remind us all that at the end of the day, beyond our personal plights, we are all connected and each of us from vein to limb, to brain, to heart – from West to East, to West again – comprises the fabric of Israel – this fragile people, this exhausted nation.

And then, we wake up, and a Palestinian youth is found dead in the Jerusalem forest. And as we clench our teeth, we renew our prayer privileging the value of life – we beseech those besieging us, hurting us, for the violence to wane. And as we stand the land cries out, drenched in blood – “Enough! Let us rest – let us bury our dead” – and let us give thought to the words of the poet Zelda, who wrote:

Each rose is an island of the promised peace, the eternal peace. In each rose dwells a sapphire bird whose name is Vechit’tu “They shall beat their swords...”And the light of the rose seems so near, and its fragrance so near, and the silence of the leaves so near, that island soneartake a boat and cross the sea of fire.May the memories of all of our children, unjustly murdered,

still vengeful hands, and may we find life and offer life and receive life, as we protect the ones we love, amid the darkening of the day.

Rabbi Neil F. Blumofe,

HootenannyFor some of us of “that certain age,” the

word “Hootenanny” evokes great memories of a folk song sing-along, or the defiance of the 1960s, or even the power of a group of like-minded people. For others, you might be scratching your head, knowing that you heard that word…only, what does it mean?

Well, if you are lucky enough to be one of the first 50 reservations, you’ll find out exactly what it means: a Hootenanny is a great, fun, fabulous, laughter-filled event!

On Sunday evening, August 24, we invite you to attend a local Hootenanny. It’s at a local, sustainable farm. Yes, right here, in Pasadena, CA. Visit with the Urban Homestead, and get a sense of living off the land. Yes, right here, in Pasadena.

This local family produces 6,000 pounds of vegetables annually, on just 1/10 of an acre. Yes, right here, in Pasadena.

On Sunday evenings, this family hosts a Hootenanny at their home. Yes, right here, in Pasadena, CA. People of all ages, sizes, colors, nationalities, ethnicities, join in for some out-loud (and often times off- key) sing-alongs. Details:

Welcome to Rabbi Silversteinby Jon Weisz, PJTC President

It is my great privilege and joy to officially welcome Rabbi Becky Silverstein, our new Education Director of the Louis B. Silver Religious School. Becky has now arrived on our PJTC campus as of July 21, and he is already busy getting oriented and preparing for the upcoming school year.

Rabbi Silverstein was selected as our Education Director after an extensive nine-month search process. He brings to his new position a love for Judaism, a passion and commitment to Jewish education, and the creativity and sensitivity to build onto the wonderful traditions and excellence already present at the LBSRS. Rabbi Silverstein is also an openly transgender Rabbi. He has been active with Keshet, a national organization working for the full equality of gay, lesbian, and transgender Jews in Jewish life. PJTC has a long history of being a diverse and inclusive synagogue, and we are supportive of Rabbi Silverstein’s leadership in the Jewish LGBTQ community.

Again, we are thrilled to welcome Rabbi Silverstein to PJTC. I encourage all families and members to visit the religious school office and meet with him. You can reach him at [email protected]

September 11 (We will meet in the Lounge). Jerusalem’s Traitor by Desmond Seward. When the Jews revolted against Rome in 66 CE, Josephus, a Jerusalem aristocrat, was made a general in his nation’s army. Captured by the Romans, he saved his skin by finding favor with the emperor Vespasian. He then served as an adviser to the Roman legions, running a network of spies inside Jerusalem, in the belief that the Jews’ only

hope of survival lay in surrender to Rome. Josephus is our only source of information for the war of extermination that ended in the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple, and the amazing times in which he lived. Was Josephus a hero or a traitor?

October 8 (NOTE change of meeting date in observance of Sukkot. We will meet in Wohlmann Hall). Plainsong by Kent Haruf. Haruf reveals a whole community as he interweaves the stories of a pregnant high school girl, a lonely teacher, a pair of boys abandoned by their mother, and a couple of crusty bachelor farmers. From simple elements, Haruf achieves a novel of wisdom and grace, which was a finalist for the 1999 National Book Award.

In Memory of Bob Levinsonby Barbara Levinson

Bob Levinson was a community leader in everything he did: a founding member of the PJTC Men’s Club, past president of Congregation Shaarei Torah, co-founder of Hypnotherapy Associates, member of the Board of Governors of the Jewish Federation of the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, and a generous supporter of PJTC, both financially and in kind.

Bob was a world traveler who proudly bragged that he had been to 53 countries and counting. He was a champion Irish dancer and a trained clown who once performed for Ringling Brothers. He was the proud father of his son, David. He will be missed by his wife, Barbara, David, and the congregation of PJTC.

Kiddush Lunches By Roz Scherr

Our weekly Kiddush lunches are a Shabbat delight, But without enough sponsors, we’re in a terrible plight. Our Wohlmann kitchen is bright and new, Clean and shiny ready for YOU.For an anniversary, new baby, or your own birthday, Celebrate it with a luncheon after we pray.Join with a friend or three or four, Then the work isn’t such a chore. We can provide each fork and cup and plate, But without you, it’s just wine, challah and cake.

August Birthdays and Anniversaries

Our congratulations to Cantor Ruth Berman Harris, newly accepted into the Cantors Assembly of America. This is a singular honor for her and the Harris family, as well as the congregants here at PJTC.

We are all proud of her accomplishments.

Rabbi Joshua D. Garroway, Ph.D., has been promoted to Associate Professor of Early Christianity and the Second Commonwealth at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s Skirball Campus in Los Angeles. Dr./Rabbi Garroway taught a wonderful Adult Education class at PJTC last fall, and we hope he can do so again in the future.

Rose Bushes Have a New Homeby Edie Taylor

Sixteen rose bushes from Congregation Shaarei Torah have found a new home at PJTC. When you attend services in Knell Chapel, look over to the right and left of the stairway to see the newly transplanted rose bushes in each section. Some are already in bloom.

Our roses have found a new life here, and we hope to keep them lovingly tended with new growth and beauty for us all to enjoy.

Also note the plaque on the post, dedicated to children of the community who passed away too soon:

In memory of ourprecious flowers

Who were pluckedbefore their time.

L'zicharon Olam ( For everlasting memory).

Safety and SecurityAt our events and services, kids are great but remember our staff has a lot on its plate.Keeping children safe is an important thing to do but parents and grandparents, it’s up to YOU!
