Our “BACK-To-SCHOOL MISSION FOCUS” for
June-Aug. is collecting money to help a family with two
school age children who need school supplies and new
clothes/shoes for the upcoming school year. Dona-
tions given in August will be used to purchase
food for this family.
August GGG will be on Thursday, August 13 when we will enjoy a HOT DOG Picnic. BWM will provide hot dogs, buns, and all the ‘fixins’ and attendees will
furnish chips, morning snacks, and desserts. We ask each lady to bring non-perishable canned goods for our Harvey’s Chapel Food Bank in Mt. Pine. If you
would like to attend in August and you haven’t already signed up, please give Kathy Foust a call at 922-3208.
BBC Ladies – YOU are invited!—Please join the BWM team at our
First Thursday Prayer Time on AUGUST 6th from 10-10:30 am
in our sanctuary. We hope to see you for this sweet time of praying
together for the needs of our church and beyond. Following our pray-
er time, the BWM Team meets at 10:30 for their monthly
meeting.
Balboa Folks - If YOU would like to join the Women's Ministry Back To School Mission Project, please give your donations (cash or checks payable to BBC) to Debbie in the office or place in blue BACK-
PACK in Fellowship Hallway.

This article is written in remembrance of our sister-in-Christ, our patron, and our friend, Becky Braden.
Becky was a former member of the Media Library Committee and volunteered many long hours assisting with typing accession information and cards on hundreds of books and other media. When a used computer was donated for Media Library use, she started again, along with a few others, retyping that same infor-mation into the new data base. In 2004, when I came on-board as a volunteer, the accession of about two thousand media had been completed using the Concourse software – a former version of the program that we still use today. I accepted the position as Librarian in 2006. Becky frequently came by during times that I spent in the Media Library. She came by as a patron to return and check out materials, and she always made time to visit for a few minutes, checking to see how everything was going and to offer words of encourage-ment for this ministry. When Becky came across advertisements or articles concerning media she thought would further our ministry, she would bring it to our attention along with the ad or the article for us to read. Becky not only encouraged us, but also encouraged others to come by and take advantage of all that the Me-dia Library had to offer. Due to the work, encouragement, and love for this ministry by Becky Braden and others like her, Balboa Baptist Church has a Library Media Center to be proud of. We love and appreciate Becky Braden for the wonderful person she was on this earth, her patronage, and her friendship to us individually as well as her being a Friend of the Media Library at BBC. The following are a few of the items that Becky donated to our Media Library: Dark Horse by Ralph Reed – Political thriller that is a fictional account of behind-the-scenes tour of a bitter and hard-fought presidential campaign. Vanished Into Thin Air by Hal Lindsey – The hope of every believer. He's Been Faithful by Carol Cymbala, director of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. Concerning this book, Ms. Cymbala says, “If there is one theme to the story of my life, it is that God is faithful regardless of the circumstances. My inadequacies and fears have been the very place where I've experienced God working so powerfully. Over and over, He has led me into situations that have challenged me and stretched my faith be-yond anything I could imagine. But that's where I felt His power the strongest.” Becky was also the catalyst for our getting started with the political thriller series by Joel C. Rosenberg. Ros-enberg seems to have a knack for predicting future events. He does this using Scripture-based prophecy and his knowledge of political affairs in today’s world. His two series include these books: The Last Jihad, The Twelfth Imam, The Last Days, The Tehran Initiative, The Ezekiel Option, Damascus Countdown, The Copper Scroll, The Auschwitz Escape, The Dead Heat, The Third Target.
WE HOPE YOU WILL COME BY AND CHECK US OUT!!! -Sherry Karr and the Media Library Committee

New Guy in the Office: Hello everyone! My name is Tom Laginja (just call me Tom). I am your new part time secretary. That is my official title, but I just think of myself as an office guy. And I don’t mind being referred to as “the new Robin”, although it will take me a while to learn all the facets of the job. Robin was very kind in writing up a lot of her tasks. That will be a big help to me. If you are curious about my last name, it is pronounced” luh-gin-yuh” (hard “g”). Thank you to all who have stopped in to wel-come me. I appreciate it, and look forward to meeting each of you.

TRISTAN RUSSO
If you attended the Sunday evening worship service on May 24th, you would have been blessed by a great sermon preached by a young man who is the subject of this bio sketch. Tristan Russo graduated from Westside Christian School, ElDorado, AR, and came to HSV very fo-cused on fulfilling his call to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. He is the son of Nick Russo and Kriss Kilcrease, and the grandson of our mem-bers Sue and Tony Russo. Tristan was saved at a FUGE Camp in Ridge-crest, N.C. when he was fourteen and also felt called to preach at age fourteen. He is enrolled at NPCC studying criminal justice, but expects to one day attend Semi-nary. Naturally, he is preparing for an adjunct career to support himself while attending Semi-nary. His one goal presently is to become a youth pastor. The Lord is obviously preparing him in that direction by affording him the opportunity to work with our youth group on Wednesday nights and with the 5th & 6th grades during VBS. He is looking forward to assist-ing the leaders when we resume the youth meetings on August 5th. In talking with a couple of the leaders of the above activities, he was described as a sharp young man who relates well with the youth and who has some good ideas. He was especially impressive when he gave his personal testimony to the VBS children. Tristan has a younger brother and sister, Lexx and Brinkley Kilcrease, who live in El Dorado. One of his most enjoyable activities is hunting: “Any kind of hunting – just like to be in the woods.” You will be seeing Tristan often in and around our church, so shake his hand and get to know him. He’s a “neat” young man!
ZANE BURNS
Zane is a personable pre-teen who has just recently made a com-mitment to serve Jesus Christ. He and his eight year old sister, Macken-zie, have been attending our AWANA program for the past couple years―he in the T&T Group and Mackenzie in Sparks. They both usual-ly come bouncing in each Wednesday night during the school year and freely participate in the activities. Zane was so impressive by the man-ner in which he completed his course work each week and his innate
ability to remember the bible verses. He now has “graduated” to the Wednesday night youth group. The content of the devotionals has impressed him most in the youth meetings. Zane was born in Little Rock, spent his early childhood in Perryville, AR, and moved to the Village in 2008. He is the son of Carri Burns and the grandson of our member, Terri Garrett. As mentioned, his sister, Mackenzie, is also a part of this happy family. Zane is an honor student at Fountain Lake and will be entering 7th grade this fall. His favorite sport is football and his favorite NFL team is the N.O. Saints! It’s a little early for him to zero in on just what he wants to be “when he grows up.” Three things have entered his mind: Football player, movie director, or artist for video games. (Rather diversified isn’t it?) We shall look forward to seeing Zane grow in stature and in spirit. Please pray that the Lord will continue to bless him and his family

Did you notice those happy faces in the rooms and hallways during
Vacation Bible School? I guess you can have fun while learning!
Great job Janie and Becky, and all volunteers.
Sunday School attendance was also up during June,
which brings me to a need:
As you know, we had a teacher who moved, and were already short
one in grades 1-3 and 4-6. Please pray that the person God is calling
for these positions will recognize and respond to His calling.
We also have a need for a part time worker to fill in for Martha
Loomis in the Nursery during Sunday School, while she recovers.
There are several openings for Sunday nights and Wednesday nights.
This is one hour, once every three months.
Continue to pray for the children and workers.

This year, our VBS theme was Journey Off the
Map. Our teachers and students studied the
book of Daniel and learned how Daniel and his
friends, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,
looked to God to guide their paths even though it
wasn’t easy and sometimes dangerous. Our Bible
verse for this week said it all, “And whenever you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will
hear this command behind you. This is the way, walk in it.” Each day, we had a new aspect of
the journey. Monday was “Know Your Guide,” which covered Jesus as our Ultimate Guide;
Tuesday was “Follow Your Guide,” Wednesday was “Trust Your Guide,” Thursday was “Stay on
Track,” and Friday was “Keep Watching.” Our “specials” teachers—recreation, snacks, crafts
and music—emphasized these points when the kids headed out of the classroom and to the
specials areas.
Our salvation service was held on Wednesday, and we had one child come forward for counsel-
ling. The next day, we had an additional two children make the decision to accept Christ as their
Savior. During the week, we had 78 children enrolled and 40 teachers. We had an average daily
attendance of 68. The students and teachers participated in an offering for the Spring Lake
Camp scholarship fund and collected $698.29. On Friday, we had a family assembly at 11:30.
The parents and grandparents were treated to a slide show of the students in different activities
and then each grade level sang songs and recited the emphasis point for each day. After visiting
the classrooms, the families enjoyed a light lunch in the fellowship hall.
Our Friday lunch workers served about 200 hot dogs! It was a great week! We want to thank
all of our Balboa family for all the prayers you sent to God for our VBS as well as for all the
cookies, lemonade and other items from the refreshment center. They were a big help.
